The 2009 Annual Managers Meetings were held March 18-19 at the BCC in the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island, Nebraska. “Squawk” by Travis Bradberry, Ph.D. was the recommended reading for this year, and Bob Negen, of WhizBang Training, was the keynote speaker, touching on excellent retail marketing, sales and customer service This year’s theme was “Life’s a Gamble: What’s in Your Deck?” with the national economy as a concern, a casino theme was in order. The meeting kicked off with the Real Colors personal inventory. Staffers found if they were blue, green, gold, or orange, or a mix. Real Colors is a great way to find out more about how people communicate and work, in order to better relate and communicate with others based on their ‘color’. A session on “6 Keys to Teamwork” by Mike Henke of Associate Staffing followed lunch, plus a presentation on the new Learning Management System by Craig Garrett, an update on company IT by Chris Hanke, and a Leadership Panel with various division heads, plus a fun game called “Human Scavenger Hunt”. The day concluded in the “Jackpot Room” of the Bosselman Conference Center, with a dinner, retail awards ceremony, and a Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament. Lasting until about 11 pm, the Tournament was enjoyed by many but only won by one, Linda Clark of Pump & Pantry #23 in Holdrege. Linda’s prize was a 5-day trip to Las Vegas. Second place went to Renee Janssen of #11 in Grand Island, and third went to Jennifer Gipfert, Big Springs Human Resources. Day two kicked off with a year in review, book discussion, and Q&A with Chuck and Charlie Bosselman, followed by several hours of presentation by Bob Negen. Bob is the author of a book entitled “Marketing your Retail Store”, and talked about everyday things that could be done to improve customer service, marketing and sales. The annual Bosselman/Gus Fonner Stakes Race took place on Saturday, April 25 at Fonner Park. A cool and cloudy day didn’t keep fans away, and the crowd roared as horses traded places throughout the $75,000 Bosselman/Gus Fonner Stakes 9th race. Running fifth much of the way and third by three lengths entering the home stretch, Budge Man and jockey Jesus Ponce charged to a 2 1/2-length victory in the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds and up, making winners out of Lincoln Thoroughbred owners Lynn and Mari McKee in their first Bosselman start. Caribou Coffee, inside Pump & Pantry #40 at 1616 2nd Avenue in Kearney, Nebraska, opened for business on December 15. Business has been good and continues to grow, with daily specials like “Loper Day” every Friday offering a discount for UNK students, and the Bou Buyer Card, a frequent buyer program.Hours are 6 am to 8 pm and free wireless is available inside the cozy bistro atmosphere. Menu items include both hot and iced coffees, teas, espressos, smoothies, non-coffee “Snowdrifts,” and hot chocolate; Coca-Cola products; a variety of pastries including cakes, muffins, scones, breads, bars, bagels, cookies and donuts; and seasonal items.

1st Annual Easter Family Fun Day an Overwhelming Success

The Bosselman Employee Recognition Banquet was held on November 12th, at the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island, Nebraska. The Bosselman Family of Companies recognized loyal service and dedication of over 260 employees who have attained five years of service, and each five year increment thereafter. Charlie Bosselman opened the program with the unveiling of the new Mission Statement of the Company, and the Values which are the foundation of our business. John Clinch, Lincoln Financial Securities Corporation, updated the group on the future outlook of our investments in the 401(k) plan during these times of economic concern for our Country.The Keynote Speaker for the evening was Aaron Davis, a member of the 1994 National Championship Nebraska Football Team and President of his own Consulting Firm, ADP, Inc. Aaron was very entertaining and provided a great message.Thanks to the committee of over 20 volunteers and for management’s support in putting the banquet together. It was enjoyed by everyone in attendance. A special thanks to each employee recognized for the years of service and dedication to the Bosselman Family of Companies. We look forward to many years of continued growth.

2008 Employee Recognition Banquet

The first annual Easter Family Fun day was held Saturday, April 11 at the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island from noon to 4 pm. A joint venture among Pump & Pantry, Runza, and KSYZ, this event took the place of the Easter Egg Hunt that Pump & Pantry had been putting on for many years in order to provide a safer environment for children and families to come have Easter fun. Runza had previously held “Runza Family Day at the Races,” while KSYZ had done an Easter Egg Hunt during the races.After months of planning, the free event had an even larger turnout than anticipated. Combining past attendance from all three entities’ past events amounted to around 2,000, so 1,500 candy bags and mini-Runzas were prepared, and Meadow Gold provided free milk. Imagine our surprise when attendance soared to 7,000! The candy bags and mini-Runzas were gone in 90 minutes, but there was much fun to be had inside the events

center. 35 booths from area businesses and organizations offered tons of fun, such as TaeKwonDo lessons; a petting zoo featuring baby chicks, baby bunnies, baby pigs, calves and goats; face painting; science experiments; learning how to slide and play softball; old-fashioned blacksmith games; games, coloring, and more. Two carnival rides and two inflatables were also available; the Nebraska State Patrol brought a “Seat Belt Convincer,” the Grand Island Police Department brought a cruiser and motorcycle, and the Grand Island Fire Department showed off a fire engine, ambulance, and took kids through the “Fire House” to learn about safe escapes in case of a fire. A stage featured performances throughout the day by Just for Kix, Smitty’s Performing Arts Center, Third City TaeKwonDo, and Edgerton Explorit Center. Two Easter Bunnies visited with children and gave out candy, and Runza Rex was on hand to greet them as well. All in all, it was a busy and fun day for all!

Pump & Pantry #42 Holds Grand Opening

April 17 turned out to be the perfect day for a Grand Opening, with sunny skies after a cloudy morning that threatened rain. Located at 13th and Allen Drive in Grand Island, the newest Pump & Pantry also features Nebraska’s first blender pumps. This was celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 am on the 17th with remarks from Nebraska’s Lieutenant Governor Rick Sheehy; Nebraska Department of Agriculture Assistant Director Ginger Langemeier; Nebraska Corn Board Chairman Jon Holzfaster; Nebraska Ethanol Board Administrator Todd Sneller; and Grand Island Mayor Margaret Hornady. US Congressman Adrian Smith was unable to attend but provided a letter of congratulations that was read by Charlie Bosselman. Following the ribbon cutting by Chuck Bosselman, Charlie Bosselman, and Fred Bosselman, Jr., fuel prices were dropped across the board, with E85 at 99

cents, E30 at $1.09, E20 at $1.19, and E10 Super Unleaded at $1.29. With a live radio remote, customers soon swarmed the store with lines 20 cars deep or more, and store staff and police directed traffic. The special prices lasted until 1 pm, with lines of cars still waiting for the discounted fuel. A hot dog meal was also available in the Prize Patrol trailer for just a dollar, and prize registrations, free samples, and Nebraska Lottery were featured inside the store. Area corn growers from Hall and Buffalo Counties were also on hand to fuel up cars and help explain the blender pumps and the various blends of fuel, and also hand out promotional items like back packs and stickers. Special thanks to the Nebraska Corn Board for helping out with advertising the event, providing coupons to FFVs and bringing farmers in to help fill up customers’ vehicles!

Bill Unzicker, father of Jan Bosselman and grandfather to Charlie and Brandi, retired in February after 11 years of service to the Bosselman Family of Companies as Courier. A cake and punch reception was held at the Corporate Office on February 25. We wish you the best, Grandpa Bill!

I just wanted to let you know that it is great that there are truck stops like the one here in Des Moines that caters to the truck driver. It seems most only offer a fast food atmosphere and something of a small convenience store. I want to commend one of your employees for her compassionate and courteous service. Friday, November 28 was a cold, windy day, we had gotten out of our vehicle alongside the road on Hwy 281 to tie our newly purchased Christmas tree more securely to the top of our vehicle and accidently locked our keys, cell phone, coats and my purse inside the car. My husband had a few dollars in his billfold, he chose to stay with the running vehicle while I took the five $1 bills and walked over a mile to Bosselman’s so that I could use the pay phone to call home to Hastings for someone to bring us a key so we could get back into the vehicle.

When I asked your cashier Julie to give me some change for the five $1 bills so that I could use the pay phone to call for help, she graciously offered to let me use her cell phone to make the call. After completing the call, I walked back to the vehicle where my husband was waiting. Our help arrived shortly thereafter and we were on our way home.

Chuck, I hope you are doing well? I wanted to pass along a compliment that Steve Whipkey from Con-Way Truckload called me on today.

He had a driver by the name of Nan Carter at the Altoona, IA location yesterday around 5pm. Her locks where frozen up and she asked for help getting them open. She told Steve that one of the maintenance workers there at the location worked on her locks for about 20 mins out in the FREEZING temperatures to help her. They were successful getting them open. She said she tried to give him a tip but he would not accept it. Mrs. Carter wanted to be sure we told you what a great job this gentleman did helping her out. On January 10th we were driving through Nebraska on I-80 when our van broke down near Paxton. We made several phone calls to find someone to repair the van, but on a Saturday night there was no one. We were told it would need to wait until Monday. A towing company suggested that we call Boss Truck Shop. We did, and Jeremiah, the mechanic, told us how to get the van 35 miles to North Platte without a serpentine belt. He fixed the van while we waited, and we were surprised by the service and affordable price. We were back on the road by 8 pm and arrived safely home to Minnesota. serves on the Division of Wildlife Habitat Partnership Program State Council, Ducks Unlimited and the state Sportsman Advisory Group.Singletary is a real-estate broker, farmer and rancher. He is chairman of the Lower Arkansas Valley Water Conservancy District and serves on the Pueblo County Planning and Zoning Committee. He previously served on the Wildlife commission in 1998-99 and previously was appointed to the State Parks and Recreation Board.The appointments are for four years, expiring March 1, 2013, and require Senate confirmation.The nine-member Colorado Wildlife Commission is responsible for licensing requirements and the promulgation of rules, regulations and orders concerning wildlife programs in Colorado.

As Bosselman Carriers becomes more diversified, the need for a major organizational overhaul has arisen.Currently, Bosselman Carriers employs Dispatchers Shannon True, Bambi Smith, Stacy Strasburg and Rick Grigsby; Administrative Assistant Veronica Newell; Safety and Compliance Manager Amber Mack; Mechanics Anson Dockhorn and Mike Gerloff; and Shop Foreman Jamie Morse.Along with the addition of employees, Bosselman Carriers has

updated the record keeping for the entire Transportation Division with new Oracle software. The software is OTM and has come with many positives - and only a few headaches! This new software allows more up-to-date reports on customers, loaded miles, driver activity, revenue per mile, driver, truck and trailer reports, and loaded vs. empty mile reports. This software has also been designed to work with the Qualcomm units that are installed in each semi truck and will also integrate with the E1 software that most will be using throughout the company.Bosselman Carriers continues to grow, currently looking at adding another four trucks and taking on a logistics operation. The logistics will add a couple more employees as well as provide a service for another business within the Bosselman Family of Companies.

A Busy Winter at Bosselman Carriers

It houses a complex of truck stop amenities like truck washes, showers, TV lounges, truck parts and, of course, Grandma Max’s. Grandma Max’s sports a rather plain interior. Well worn carpets, friendly waitresses, seasoned cooks, a casino in the back, and a trucker in every booth. Grandma Max (who actually existed and looks strikingly like Tom Arnold in a wig) is featured in pictures along the walls.This mid-level restaurant might not stand out from the crowd if it weren’t for its crowning jewel, the Big Max Challenge. What is the Big Max Challenge, you say? It is simple, yet has im-portant rules you must follow. You get one hour to eat four pounds of cheeseburger. Yes, four pounds. Two pounds of meat and two pounds of toppings all squished by a gargantuan bun. You must choose two sides and have to eat every single bite. If you puke, you pick it up (apparently it has happened a lot). Your reward? A free t-shirt and having your picture on the winners wall of the restaurant. I thought it could not be too difficult to eat a cheeseburger the size of an ATV wheel, so I sat down to give it a shot. After ordering and having the rules explained to me, the waitress brought over the Big Max and started the clock. There it was,

eight inches high and 16 inches across. I was in trouble.I started cutting away with a steak knife and fork. My game plan was to eat as fast as possible, then let myself digest while resting for a final push before the one hour limit. The first thing I noticed was that the burger was actually good.Five minutes in: Trying an all-out eating sprint, I had already eat-en 1/4 of the burger, cutting it in a pizza-like fashion. I was looking good and way ahead of pace!10 minutes in: I was nearly halfway done and really doing well, but started to feel a weird full. I started to realize I had just eaten two pounds of food in 10 minutes.15 minutes in: I had slowed down considerably and had only eat-en a few more bites. The burger was getting the best of me.20 minutes in: I had eaten 3/4 of the burger, and I was struggling to even put another bite in my mouth. The burger was still a full pound from being done, and I was absolutely stuffed.30 minutes in: I tried a few more bites. There was no way that I was going to even come close to finishing.Also the pre-challenge warning that (due to previous failures) I would be responsible for cleaning up any projectile regurgitation, I threw in the towel.Can you conquer the Big Max? A Taste of Sarcasm: The Big Max ChallengeBosselmans, under the leadership of Craig Garrett and Frank Haack, is in the process of implementing a state-of-the-art learning solution to the organization. The Learning Management System, commonly referred to as an LMS, will deliver and track essential/optional training.The LMS will address and meet the following goals: 1. Provide consistent training throughout the organization, 2. Serve as a resource for site management to access and assign training, 3. Serve as a communication and compliance tool, and 4. Enhance the overall level of training and job preparedness throughout the organization.Eventually all employees will access some portion of their training, which may include basic policies and procedures, electronic courses, quizzes and/or tests, via the internet. Instructor led training and on-the-job training will eventually be tracked and scheduled via the LMS. “An LMS implementation is a huge undertaking for any orga-nization,” states Garrett. “The challenges and restrictions for Bosselmans are not uncommon. First we need to ensure that we have the computers and bandwidth to support a web-based training solution and our IT department is making significant progress in this area. Then we need to evaluate and in some

circumstances develop new training.” Garrett went on to say that in many circumstances our quickest and best training will likely be previously existing policies and procedures. “Getting this information out and being able to track that the employee has had exposure to it is very powerful. With a click of a button, a manager can reassign specific training to their whole group if needed.”Garrett goes on to explain that a staged implementation starting on the retail side of the organization is where he intends to begin. “Our Pump & Pantry and Travel Centers surrounding Grand Island will be the first on-line. I want to keep the initial snags and challenges within driving distance for the initial rollout.” This is not the first LMS implementation that Garrett has overseen, but he did express that he’s not previously been involved with a rollout like this one with many different business units. “I’m counting on the fact that our retail business units will recognize the value of the LMS very quickly and this will build momen-tum and accelerate the implementation company wide.”Garrett is open to questions and comments about the upcoming LMS implementation. of the most successful and popular charity events in NASCAR. Now in its 15th year, the Ride has donated more than $12 million to children’s charities, with 6,100 participants logging more than 7.9 million cumulative motorcycle miles. The Ride departed Stevenson, Wash., on May 8 and ended in Greensboro, N.C., on May 16. Pilot Travel Centers LLC is the official Travel Center of the Chick-fil-A Kyle Petty Charity Ride.

It was a great opportunity to talk with more than two hundred students majoring in Diesel Technology who were either getting ready to graduate, or would in the next six months.It was a good experience and proved to be an opportunity to get the Shop’s name in front of quality students looking for work in the industry. 49 companies were represented at the career fair.
