1 Installing e-SPECS

An e-SPECS installation consists of an e-SPECS Server and one or more e-SPECS Clients.

The e-SPECS Server:

Stores project files and MasterSpec® master databases

Manages database updates and licenses

The e-SPECS Client:

Consists of the main application program, allowing you to edit your specifications

Communicates your changes to the server via ODBC (Open Database Connectivity)

Single-Node Installation

The Server and Client can be installed together on one machine. This setup is typical when only oneuser will be using e-SPECS and from only one machine.

Multi-Node Installation

In network installations, e-SPECS Server is typically installed on a computer separate from thoserunning the e-SPECS Client application. It is OK to install the e-SPECS Server and e-SPECS Clienton the same computer and then add additional clients throughout the network, but many networkadministrators discourage this in favor of having a centralized database server.

1.1 Extracting the Installation Package

e-SPECS® for Revit is distributed in a self-extracting compressed archive called e-SPECSRevit_80_Installation.exe. Double-clicking this file lets you extract the setup files to afolder on your machine. By default, setup.exe will launch automatically after the files have beenunzipped.

Note: The setup package will not work properly if run from a remote share. Copy the setup files to alocal folder on the machine on which you are installing e-SPECS. Then run the package from thelocal folder.

Note: If you are installing the e-SPECS Server on a Windows Vista machine, disable User AccountControl (UAC) before running the install. UAC can be enabled again after licensing e-SPECS.Disabling UAC is not necessary when installing e-SPECS client applications.

To extract the installation package and launch the install:

1. Double-click the installation package: e-SPECSRevit_80_Installation.exe.

2. Click OK in the confirmation dialog.

3. The WinZip Self-Extractor dialog appears. By default, the setup files will be extracted to atemporary folder on your machine. If you prefer, you can change this folder by clicking Browse.... If you do not want to automatically launch setup.exe once the files are extracted, uncheck the "When done unzipping open:" option.

4. Click Unzip to extract the setup files. Extracting the files may take a few minutes.

5. If the "When done unzipping open:" option was left checked, the e-SPECS Install screenappears automatically. If you unchecked this option, you can launch the installer manually:using Windows Explorer, browse to the folder specified in "Unzip to folder:" and double-click setup.exe.

1.2 Installing the Server

The e-SPECS Server stores your project files and MasterSpec® databases and serves as thecentral point of contact for all e-SPECS Clients. It is recommended (but not required) that you installthe e-SPECS Server on a machine separate from those that will be running e-SPECS Clientapplications.

If you already have version 4.x or newer of the e-SPECS Server installed, you will need toupgrade the server--see the below instructions. NOTE: For compatibility reasons, upgrading a previous 4.x version of e-SPECS for Revit clears outold Revit model exports. After upgrading v4.x, you will need to re-export to e-SPECS any Revitmodels being used with unfinished e-SPECS v4.x projects. This note about re-exporting to e-SPECS any Revit models only applies to version 4.x. It does not apply to versions 5.x ornewer.

Important Notes for Windows Vista users:

Disable User Account Control (UAC) before installing the e-SPECS Server on a WindowsVista machine. To do so, bring up the Control Panel and type "UAC" into the search box. Then click "Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off". You can enable UAC again afterlicensing e-SPECS.

If the text in the e-SPECS install window is truncated, you may need to reduce yourDisplay DPI settings. To do so, right-click a blank area of your desktop and choose"Personalize."

Installing e-SPECS 5

© 2013 InterSpec, Inc.

To install the e-SPECS Server (or upgrade it from an earlier version):

1. Extract the installation package to a local folder on the server machine and launch setup.exe(see Extracting the Installation Package).

2. In the e-SPECS Install dialog, click Install e-SPECS Server.

3. If you are upgrading your e-SPECS Server from an earlier version, proceed to step 4.

The e-SPECS databases must be hosted on an instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 ornewer. e-SPECS comes with SQL Server Express 2008, a freely-distributable version of SQLServer designed for use with desktop applications. The installer lets you create a newinstance of SQL Server Express to host your e-SPECS databases; this is the recommendedchoice.

You also have the option of attaching the e-SPECS databases to an existing instance of SQLServer 2005 or newer. This option is recommended only for IT Administrators familiar withSQL Server installation who wish to manually create and configure the SQL Server instancethat e-SPECS uses. The instance must not be used concurrently with any e-SPECS Serverversion older than 4.0. This option might be desirable if your company owns a more advancedversion of SQL Server (such as Enterprise) that you wish to use with your e-SPECSdatabases. If you wish to use your company's existing version of SQL Server (must be SQLServer 2005 or newer), InterSpec recommends creating a new instance namedINTERSPEC40 exclusively for use with e-SPECS 8.0.

3 Licensing e-SPECS

e-SPECS License Overview

The e-SPECS License Manager controls access to the e-SPECS client application software andthe MasterSpec® specification documents. To provide a more flexible and cost-effective solution, the e-SPECS client applications are licensed separately from the MasterSpec® content. You onlyhave to purchase a license to the components that you need at any given time, yet you have theflexibility to expand your configuration as necessary by simply upgrading your licenses. The e-SPECS and MasterSpec® licenses are both managed using the e-SPECS Administrator applicationon the machine hosting the e-SPECS Server.

MasterSpec® is licensed on a per-site-license basis for a fixed period of time. There are norestrictions on the number of users that can access the MasterSpec® content from any onecompany location. e-SPECS is licensed on a per-seat, concurrent-use basis, either as a time-based subscription or on a perpetual-license basis. You can install e-SPECS on an unlimitednumber of computers but the number of instances of the software that can run simultaneously will berestricted by the number of concurrent licenses purchased. For instance, if you have fiveconcurrent-use licenses, the e-SPECS License Manager will allow five instances of e-SPECS to beopened simultaneously. If a sixth instance of the program is opened, the License Manager will senda notification to the user informing them that they have exceeded the license count and to closeanother instance of the application. If additional team members need to access specificationprojects simultaneously, you will need to upgrade your e-SPECS license, not the MasterSpec®content license. If you wish to add additional MasterSpec® libraries, upgrade your MasterSpec®license and the libraries will be instantly available to all of the e-SPECS client application seats.

Trial Mode

e-SPECS client applications are installed with a 30-day-trial license. The trial starts when thesoftware is installed and includes a fully-functioning version of the application with access to alimited number of MasterSpec® sections, the MasterSpec® trial sections. There are eleven trialsections per MasterSpec® library. To access the software after the 30-day trial period expires, youwill need a license serial number obtained from your e-SPECS sales representative when youpurchase the software. Similarly, when you purchase a subscription to one or more MasterSpec®libraries, you receive a serial number with your order that lets you unlock the appropriateMasterSpec® sections.

Licensing e-SPECS and MASTERSPEC

To license e-SPECS and MasterSpec®, first obtain the necessary serial numbers from your e-SPECS sales representative. Then license e-SPECS and MASTERSPEC using the e-SPECSAdministrator application on the machine hosting the e-SPECS Server.

3.1 License Serial Numbers

Before you can license your e-SPECS software or MasterSpec® content, you will need the licenseserial numbers obtained from your e-SPECS sales representative. These serial numbers take theform of:

4 Appendix A - Databases and Directories

System administrators may need to know which SQL databases are installed by e-SPECS, as wellas the default paths of the databases' data files and logs.

The e-SPECS Server SQL Databases

Each SQL database used by e-SPECS is listed below along with a description.

Note: Despite having the same names, e-SPECS Server v3.2 databases are NOT compatible withe-SPECS Server v8.x databases. Migrating data from v3.2 to v8.x requires special processes (see Migrating v3.2 Specification Projects in the e-SPECS Administrator User's Guide and Convertingv3.2 Custom Document Masters in the e-SPECS Installation Guide).

Note: each custom Document Master created in e-SPECS Designer has its own database andassociated MDF file. For example, a Document Master called "My Office Master" would have a SQLdatabase called MYOFFICEMASTER and its database filename would be MYOFFICEMASTER.MDF

The e-SPECS Server Data Directories

The e-SPECS v3.2 and e-SPECS v8.x database files (MDF and LDF files) are stored in separatedirectories, possibly on separate machines if you installed e-SPECS Server v8.x on a machineother than your e-SPECS v3.2 server.

The default e-SPECS v3.2 data directory is

<Shared Application Data Folder>\InterSpec\Data\

The default e-SPECS v8.x data directory is

<Shared Application Data Folder>\InterSpec\Data40\

Where <Shared Application Data Folder> is typically

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\

but may vary depending on your system. (You may need to enable "Show hidden files and folders"in your Windows Explorer Folder Options in order to see this folder.)
