DCs Score 3 CEs

AND Meet #53

Membership Rally on 12-4-07 features

Former Denver Bronco

Bill Romanowski

The CCA held its second Membership Rally at the

Westin Westminster on Tuesday December 4, 2007.

Judging from the phone calls we’ve received it was a

success. Former Denver Bronco Bill Romanowski was the

featured speaker. He graciously signed autographs and

posed for photos. This Membership Rally was dubbed

“Meet #53 and Score 3 CE Credits” in honor of Bill

Romanowski’s player number with the Broncos. Several of

the doctors who attended were wowed by his knowledge.

Former Bronco Trainer Jim Keller was also on-hand to

speak about sports performance and rehab techniques.

Several generous sponsors made

this event possible:

The CCA is pulling out all the

stops to provide Colorado

chiropractors with opportunities

that have never been offered

before.

Our first Membership Rally

was held in May 2007 with FOUR

professional sports stars and three

stellar speakers. The 2007 Awards

Banquet special guest and

speaker was former Denver

Bronco Karl Mecklenburg. These

are a few examples of the CCA

broadening its scope to seek out

new and exciting ways for DCs to

obtain CE credits, enjoy new and

innovative speakers, meet

celebrities, and reconnect with

their colleagues.

By providing Colorado

chiropractors with events of this

nature, we hope that non-

members will be encouraged to

join our association. If you

know any non-members, please

take a moment of your time to

give them an update on the

NEW CCA. Increasing the

CCA’s membership is the way

to insure the quality of future

seminars, events and featured

speakers.

“There was a crooked man,

who walked a crooked mile.” Do

any of you remember that

poem? My aunt used to recite

this to me frequently, possibly

due the fact that she had a

crooked back. Due to years of

work on a farm, she had horrific

back pain, knee pain and every

other kind of pain you can think

of. I know chiropractic has been

around for a long, long time but

in the 1950s (boy did I just date

myself), it was rare that anyone

we knew went to a chiropractor.

Fast forward to the 1970s.

My mother had developed a

severe back problem that put

her in a wheelchair. She saw

doctor after doctor, surgeon

after surgeon. She was heavily

medicated due to the pain,

which left her in some

netherworld where it was hard

to reach her. My father’s best

friend, a cardiologist,

suggested he make an

appointment with a

chiropractor that he knew of

by the name of Dr. Paul

Issacson.

This man came into our

lives like a whirlwind. He took

charge of my mother’s health

with a vengeance. Little by little

she began to improve; you could

see it in her face. For the first

time in years she had hope.

Gradually she began taking

steps; first with a walker and

then on her own. The joy that

this man brought to my mother

and our family was nothing

short of a miracle. The ironic

part of this is Dr. Issacson was

paralyzed in an auto accident in

the late 80s. Unfortunately,

there was no cure for his

injuries.

We will be forever grateful to

this wonderful chiropractor who

changed my mother’s life so

dramatically. Chiropractic: it is

more than you think, it’s how

my mother, and my family, felt.

‘My mother had

developed a severe

back problem that put

her in a wheelchair.’

UPDATE

PRACTICEPointers

A column devoted to covering thefull range of chiropractic

practice enhancement.

Setting goals has almost

reached humorous status,

especially when labeled as New

Year’s resolutions. We don’t

realistically think that we will

meet our goals; rather we

wonder how many days

will go by before we

discard them. However,

goal setting works if done

properly and most

successful people will tell

you that they regularly

set goals. So let’s explore how

to effectively set goals that can

help you to change and

improve.

YOUR Mission Statement

The first step in goal setting

is to develop a good mission

statement. The mission

statement is the compass by

which all goals and all success is

measured. The mission

statement itself is not a goal,

but rather a statement of

direction and purpose. The

mission statement should be

simple, and is generally never

more than one to three

sentences. By first identifying

what you want your life or

practice to look like, you can

then set the appropriate goals

to help you get there.

The intended audience of

your personal mission

statement is you. We can all use

occasional course corrections

and the personal mission

statement helps us to do that.

The intended audience of

Goal Setting 2008by Rob Hart

the business mission statement

is first you and your team and,

second, your patients. You and

your team read it to make sure

you are still moving in the right

direction, and the patients read

it to understand your

commitment to them and to

their health care.

Sample Personal Mission

Statement

I will continually improve so

that I can be the best person,

husband and father as is

humanly possible. I will be

responsible to support my

family financially, emotionally

and spiritually.

Sample Business Mission

Statement

In my own family, we have

also developed a family mission

statement. I have five children

and years ago we decided as a

family, (OK, I strongly

encouraged it), that it would be

a good idea to have a simple

statement that incorporated

our hopes and desires.

Hart Family Mission

Statement

Be good and have fun.

Couldn’t be much simpler,

could it? My children used to

‘The mission statement is the

compass by which all goals and all

success is measured.’

jokingly ask if we could reverse

it and put the “have fun” part

first, but we left it as it was.

The beauty of this mission

statement is that it clearly

defines who we are

striving to be. As

individuals and as a family

we want to be good —

meaning do the things we

are supposed to do and not do

the things we are not supposed

to do — and we want to have

fun while we’re doing it.

ABC Chiropractic is

committed to providing

superior care with kindness,

enthusiasm and integrity.

Goals

When setting goals you

should always start with the

long term goals and work

towards the short term goals.

So start with your ten year

goals, then move to your five

year goals, then one year, then

one month and finally daily

goals. Then determine the

specific action steps that will

help you to accomplish those

goals. Let me give you a few

examples to show you how this

works.

Example 1

You want to lose 40 pounds

and keep it off by permanently

changing your diet and exercise

habits. Calculating that you

(continued on page 11)

Page 11: E-UPDATE...Colorado Chiropractic Association The voice of Colorado chiropractic since 1917. E-UPDATE Volume 18, No. 1 January 2008 Also in this month’s issue. . . 2007-08 CCA Board

11

January 2008 UPDATE

could lose a pound a week, you

feel that you can lose the

weight in a one year period. So,

your goals might look like this:

10 year goal

Maintain weight at 185 lbs.

5 year goal

Maintain weight at 185 lbs.

1 year goal

Reduce weight to 185 lbs.

1 month goal

Reduce weight to 221 lbs.

Action Steps

Unfortunately, the weight is

not going to melt off just

because you set a goal, so now

you have to nail down the

specifics of how you are going

to change your behavior to

achieve the desired result:

Diet - I will attend Weight

Watchers meetings weekly

beginning December 15, 2007,

and follow the program

faithfully.

Exercise - I will go to the

gym 5 mornings per week

(Goals, continued from page 10)

arriving at 7:00 AM. I will work

out with the weights on

Monday, Wednesday and Friday;

and I will ride the stationary

bike on Tuesdays and

Thursdays.

Example 2

You want to improve your

relationship with your spouse.

This is a great goal, but it is

harder to measure as it tends to

be fairly subjective.

10 year goal

Maintain a loving

relationship with my spouse.

5 year goal

Maintain a loving

relationship with my spouse.

1 year goal

To improve my relationship

with my spouse as measured by

her opinion of that relationship.

Action Steps

I will take my spouse on a

weekly date, ideally each Friday

night.

I will talk to my spouse

every evening after work, for at

least 30 minutes without

distractions such as the

television.

I will tell my spouse that I

love her at least one time a day.

SOME Do’s and Don’ts

Don’t set too many goals. It

is better to set one or two

important goals each year and

actually achieve them, than to set

many goals and accomplish none.

Make sure your goals are

measurable. A difficult to

measure goal such as “increase

my spirituality” might be written

as: I will read the scriptures daily,

or pray daily.

As noted above always,

always, always translate your

goals into action steps; the

more specific, the better.

Schedule your time. You

won’t exercise, or talk to your

spouse, or practice that musical

instrument if you don’t

schedule it.

UPDATECCA Cultivates LEGISLATIVE Connections

YOUR CCA staff and board are actively forging relationships with Governor Bill Ritter, State Senator

Lois Tochtrop, and Congressman Mark Udall. Our new lobbying team has organized over 10 meetings

with doctors of chiropractic and legislators. ALSO, ready about why YOU should

develop a strong relationship with YOUR legislators.

CCA Communications

Director Vineta Campau was

awarded the premier

recognition of DEMOCRAT OF

THE YEAR by the Arapahoe

County Democratic Party at

their 2nd Annual Patricia

Schroeder Dinner on November

10, 2007. The event was held at

the Four Points Sheraton Hotel

in Denver and attended by over

300 people. Governor Bill Ritter

and US Congressmen Mark

Udall and Ed Perlmutter were

among numerous elected

officials and legislative leaders

in attendance.

Vineta was recognized for

her leadership and unwavering

willingness to “do whatever it

takes” to get the job done. In

early 2002, Vineta responded to

January 2008 UPDATE

There is much written about

politics. What isn’t stated very

often is the importance that

relationships play in the overall

political arena. Current events in

California underscore this truth.

California has more doctors of

chiropractic than any other state

- almost 11,000 DCs, or more

than one-sixth of the nation’s

chiropractors. And while this

may seem like a large group, it is

severely dwarfed by the state’s

population of approximately 38

million. As is true with many

states, California has more than

one chiropractic state

association. And, as you might

expect, the membership of two

associations together is a

relatively small percentage of the

total. So, when the majority of

the democratic legislators

decided to attack the California

It’s All in the Relationshipby Donald M. Petersen Jr., BS, HCD (hc), FICC (h)

Chiropractic Act, the

chiropractic profession was in

no position to outspend our

enemies. In short, we didn’t

have the money or the

political muscle to change the

vote and kill the House and

Senate bills.1 But money and

muscle don’t always win the

day. Most politicians, when

possible, will remain true to

the people that originally

supported them when they

first came into office. They will

continue to serve the “people

that got them there.” This

seems to hold true for

Governor Schwarzenegger.

The chiropractic issue would

probably not be high on his

list except for the

relationships he has with

individual members of the

CCA Executive Director Joyce

Martello and her husband Jim

Laurie chat with Congressman

Mark Udall who is making a run

for the Senate in 2008.

In October, the CCA Board

of Directors, after careful

deliberation and extensive

discussion, decided to retain a

new lobbying firm, Integrated

Legislative Solutions (ILS).

The firm is comprised of three

lobbyists and a legal staff who

can be called into service when

needed. The core lobbying team is

Erik Groves (303-228-1219), Terry

Snyder (303-629-6360 or

[email protected]), and

John Zakhem (303-228-1200 or

[email protected]).

CCA Hires New

Lobbying Team

CCA Executive Director Joyce

Martello also had an opportunity

to meet with

Colorado Governor Bill Ritter.(continued on page 16)

(continued on page 16)

California Board of Chiropractic

Examiners (BCE) and the

International Chiropractors

Association (ICA). These are

the people who supported him

long before he ran for office.

And while it may have come

with a political price tag,

Governor Schwarzenegger has

done the right thing for the

chiropractic profession because

of the relationships he had long

before he thought about

running for office. There’s a

lesson to be learned from all

this, and it’s a pretty simple

one. Chiropractic will probably

never have enough money to

compete politically with

organized medicine and the

drug companies. Together, they

have budgets larger than most

states.2 But we can build

Page 16: E-UPDATE...Colorado Chiropractic Association The voice of Colorado chiropractic since 1917. E-UPDATE Volume 18, No. 1 January 2008 Also in this month’s issue. . . 2007-08 CCA Board

UPDATE

The CCA Executive

Committee completed

extensive research in

interviewing six different

lobbying firms prior to making a

recommendation to the full

CCA Board. The ILS team

brings a high level of energy and

experience to the table and has

hit the ground running a day

after they were retained.

Meetings have been set up with

the Governor, legislators, and

agency directors who are

important to our legislative

agenda. Planning is underway

to hold CCA Key Doctor

training sessions and to extend

their expertise concerning how

to approach and discuss CCA

relationships with up-and-

coming legislators when they

need it the most - at the

beginning of their careers. This

is when even small donations

can make a difference. Make an

effort to get to know those

running for office in your

community. Invite them to

meet with all of the DCs in your

legislative district and ask

them the hard questions about

their support for chiropractic.

If they meet your criteria, you

can support them with your

money and your patients.

Remember, your vote is only

one vote. But if 10 DCs each has

an average of 200 patients, that

total can have an impact on the

outcome of a local election. If

you continue your relationship

(Relationships, continued from page 15)

with your political friends, you

will be in a position to ask them

to support the chiropractic

profession when our enemies

attack. Even if you don’t call

them every time a bill is

discussed, they will likely think

of you as they vote on issues

relating to chiropractic. This

may not seem important, or

even worth your time. But it

can make all the difference.

Just ask the almost 11,000

California DCs. They are very

happy that a few of their

colleagues took the time to

support their governor.

UPDATE

1) Do your homework.

Google the Legislator, read

about him/her, read their

personal websites. If they have

a constituent e-letter sign up

for it and read it. Do not

schedule a meeting with a

Legislator who you have

actively and publicly opposed. If

you donated money to a prior

opponent or have had any kind

of a problem with a Legislator

then you should not meet with

them.

2) Talk to either Terry

Snyder or Erik Groves of

Integrated Legislative

Solutions before you schedule

an appointment. We want to

share any information we have

to make your meetings as

effective as possible. We will

advise you on past votes, major

donors, future ambitions and

other information that we have

readily available. Terry can be

reached at 303-629-6360 or

[email protected] -

Erik can be reached at 303-228-

1219 or 970-640-7717.

3) Before your meeting,

review the issues that are of

primary importance to the

CCA. Please stick to the basic

agenda as set forth by the CCA.

There are lots of issues of

concern to doctors of

chiropractic.; however, to be

effective, please focus only on

the issues that are the priorities

of the association the current

Legislative session. Know the

arguments pro and con and be

able to advance our position

cogently and succinctly.

Legislators literally have

hundreds of meetings. That is

why we encourage you to be

persuasive but be persuasive in

as short amount of time as

possible.

4) Be on time and have

materials to hand the

Legislators that set forth the

CCA’s position. We will try to

have several sets of materials to

provide. The goals of the first

meeting are limited to: a. To

meet and get to know or

develop a better relationship

with the Legislator. b.

Educating them on issues of

concern to your profession.

Remember that to get a vote

will require multiple meetings

and follow up. That is why we

ask that you not ask for

commitment in the initial

meeting.

5) What you are NOT there

to do is disagree with the

Legislator. If you happen to

agree on a non-chiropractic

health care issue say so and

thank them for work in that

area. But, you are not there to

lobby on issues other than

Chiropractic issues and never

advance your views on issues in

which you and the Legislator

disagree. You are there not as a

private citizen but as a

representative of this great

organization.

6) Do not ask for votes or

support but let the Legislator

know that you are available as

a resource to give honest and

candid advice on any issues of

concern. You should also let the

Legislator know the number of

patients you have an

approximate estimate of the

number of patients your

colleagues have in his or her

district. Have examples of

success stories from your own

practice. Have examples of

atrocious conduct by various

insurance companies as well.

7) Call us after the meeting

let us know what transpired.

We need to do follow up with

each Legislator. Your input is

absolutely essential. We need

your candid appraisal of the

Legislator.

8) Send a nice note or letter

to the Legislator after the

meeting thanking them for

meeting with you and noting

any issues or personal matters

that were discussed. For

example, if you both went to

the same high school you might

refer to that. Send us a blind

copy of the letter.

9) Stay in contact with the

Legislator. Send a Christmas or

holiday card. If you come across

an article or other information

about the chiropractic

profession, copy it and sent it. If

they have town hall meetings,

attend or ask a colleague to

attend. Your job is to both

persuade and, equally

important, educate the

Legislator. When we have draft

copies of Legislation, we will

forward them to you and ask

that you send it to the

Legislator with a letter asking

for their support and help.

Why is your med-pay bill in

the public interest?

Our bill will provide

affordable coverage for

thousands of injured drivers

and their passengers each year.

This will save millions in tax

dollars as often times those

injuries are treated at public

hospitals. Chiropractic care is

affordable and provides relief to

thousands of patients every

year. This bill will also not harm

the insurance industry as they

will only have to offer coverage

that many Coloradans need.

Why should the Legislature

get involved in this issue?

Every health care plan being

advanced says that we have to

insure more Coloradans. Our

plan provides a basic level of

insurance and saves the state a

great deal of money.

Do Chiropractors provide

real benefit to patients?

Yes, they do. There are

many injuries that a trained

Chiropractor can assist with

that Medical Doctors are

unable to help with. That is why

a growing number of Medical

Doctors refer patients to

Chiropractic Doctors and work

hand in hand with them in

providing treatment for the

benefit of the patients. We as a

profession are about helping

people.

What about Chiropractic

Doctors abuses such as over

billing and endless treatments

just to run up bills?

Every profession has its bad

apples. We do all we can to

weed them out and do a good

job of it. Of course, even one

abuse of the system is one too

many and we will be ever more

vigilant in cracking down on

abuses. We as a profession will

support any reasonable

sanctions that crack down on

those very few of our colleagues

who give us all a bad name. I

personally attend over _______

hours per year of continuing

education (discuss your

personal background and what

you do.)

You should also be aware

that for every case of over

billing there is a Chiropractic

Doctor who gives free

treatments to patients knowing

full well that the insurance

company will not reimburse for

those services. Al most every

Chiropractor I know gives

annually hundreds of hours of

free care to those in need.

Take Legislative ACTION!Join the CCA Key Doctor Program

The CCA Key Doctor Program matches individual doctors with their

state senators and representatives to provide one-on-one, grassroots

communication. State legislators need YOUR input regarding chiropractic

issues – keep them informed and engaged!

What is a Key Doctor? In Colorado, we have 100 legislative districts represented by 100 representatives and sena-tors. A Key Doctor will become the CRUCIAL contact person to one of these legislators.

Why get involved? The CCA has an ambitious legislative program designed to help you and your patients. Newstate laws limit the CCA’s ability to connect with state legislators. This year the Colorado Legislature will again con-sider managed care contracts, auto insurance changes, including mandatory med-pay, and other bills that affect yourpatients’ rights and your small business. During the legislative session (January to May) the time commitment is aboutONE HOUR per month.

What does a Key Doctor do? Simply this: Get to know your legislator. Buy them coffee - take them out to lunch.Every one of these legislators is a person just like you and me. Every day as doctors of chiropractic you educate andsell your services and yourselves to the public. Your legislator is just another person who needs to be informed.Educate them about the value your care brings to their constituents. When legislative action is needed, the CCA willcontact you via e-mail and ask you to contact your legislator with specific information. (It is a necessity that the CCAhave your correct e-mail address AND that you commit to checking your e-mail at least twice a day.)

What can you do? Get involved. We know who your elected legislators are, and we hope that with your commit-ment TODAY to this program, we will have a doctor assigned to every Colorado legislator. YOU are those doctors!!!

When do I start? RIGHT NOW!Complete the REGISTRATION form enclosed and FAX it back to the CCA at (303) 755-1010. The legislative sessionbegins in early January 2008 - be ready for legislative action!

CC-PAC Updateon Colorado Finance Reform Act

The Campaign Finance Reform Act has changed the rules on contributions to PACs (Political Action

Committees) in Colorado. The maximum contribution an individual can make to a PAC is $525 per election

cycle (every two years). The current election cycle is from December 8, 2006 to December 6, 2008.

Corporate/business checks are allowed as well as checks from individual accounts. Each family member may

contribute with their own personal account, but only one contribution can be made from a joint account. ($200

maximum contribution per election cycle may also be sent directly to a candidate.)

What does this mean to me?

PAC funds are needed to ensure positive contacts with legislators. Each Colorado legislative session there are

issues which impact doctors of chiropractic and their patients. So, there is ALWAYS a need for a strong, well-

funded PAC. The PAC law requires the CC-PAC to find more contributors with smaller donations.

What if I still have questions about the law or the CC-PAC?
