E-Writing Course Syllabus Mr. Tiedens Course Overview The purpose of this course is to ex plore the changing landscape of writing in the 21st century. Students will learn to use various electronic and internet based methods for composing, sharing, and publishing their written work. Specifically , students in this course will publish an on-line newspaper , learning journalistic writing and ethical rules. By the end of this course, students will be able to identify news worthy events, write using the AP style book, understand legal 1st amendment issues, avoid ethical conflicts, and efficiently use available internet communication programs. As this is the first time this course is offered, a certain amount of flexibili ty is asked of the student. General Rules: Be on time! -Y ou must be in the room be fore the bells or you will be marked tardy . - You must be in your assigned seat or you will be marked absent. Be prepared! -All text books must be covered. - You should have all materials when you come to class. - Books, notebooks, packets, and pen/pencil. - T ake care of any bathroom issues before you come to class. - No bathroom or locker passes will be issued. Y ou have plenty of time to handle that between classes. Be kind! - School is a place for ideas to be discussed and debated. All ideas will be respected within this classroom. - I expect all students to treat each other with kindness and respect at all times, even if disagreements arise. Foul, hurtful, insult ing, or racist language will not be tolerated. T echnological Devices: W e live in a wondrous age. The availability of personal devices such as cell phone, game systems, and music  players is unprecedented. These devices have become so ubiquitous that people can't s eem to function without them. Y et, the pervasive nature of these has become a distraction and people often drift of into their own worlds (note the New Y ork girl who fell into a sewer while texting). These devices also can be used for nefarious  purposes as well. As per school distr ict policy , these devices are banned inside this classroom. Specifically: - Absolutely no cell phones allowed! If I can even see the outline of one in your pocke t, it will be sent to the office for y ou to pick up after school. No questions asked. -The same rule and consequence applies to any game devices. -MP3 or similar music play ers are occasionally allowed during quiet work time in class. However, once the class begins, all head phones or ear buds should be removed and packed away and out of sight. Homework: - Ass ignments are due at the beginning of class and are to be placed into the "Inbox" tray . - Corrected homework will be placed in the "Outbox" drawer. - It is the student's responsibility to obtain their graded work by looking through the drawer. - Late assignments will be accepted with a 10% per day late penalty.
