instrument used to detect the

presence of ferrous and

nonferrous metals.

All industries which need

product purity need metal

detectors. The list of examples

is almost endless, and includes

food, textile, rubber, plastic,

wood products, chemical,

cosmetic, pharmaceutical and

many other industries.

Besides the obvious benefit

of product purity, the metal

detector will also protect

downstream equipment from

damage caused by metal in the

product stream.

Metal can enter the

production process with the

raw material or can get into

the product due to wear or

failure of processing equip-

ment components. Detecting

pieces of broken machinery

can help resolve equipment

problems before major damage

occurs. Thus, equipment

downtime is reduced and

productivity is increased.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATIONThe E-Z Tec® Metal Detector uses abalanced three–coil arrangementwound around the aperture to sensemetal moving through it. The center(oscillator) coil emits an electromag-netic field throughout the space withinthe metal detector housing. Tworeceiver coils (placed equidistant oneither side of the oscillator coil) areconnected in series so that the energycoupled from the oscillator coil toeither of the receiver coils exactlycancels the energy coupled to the otherreceiver coil; the net output of this pairis essentially zero. Metal passingthrough this set of coils creates animbalance which, if the signal’samplitude is great enough, will resultin a detection.

SENSITIVITYThe sensitivity of a metal detector isusually defined as the diameter of thesmallest sphere which is always detected.Many factors influence the sensitivitythat can be attained. These include:product characteristics, type and shape ofmetal to be detected, aperture dimen-sions, and the position of the metalparticle within the aperture. Actualproduction line sensitivities can beestimated more accurately when installa-tion conditions and the customer’sproduct are considered.

FEATURES• Stainless Steel Design – The

Aperture Models

Eriez New E-Z Tec® DSP MetalDetectors are extremely sensitiveinstruments used to detect ferrous,non–ferrous and stainless steel metalcontaminants. The advanced digitalsignal processing provides customersin the food, textile, pharmaceutical,rubber, chemical, and many otherindustries, with a unit designed foroptimum performance and improvedproduct purity.

Another highlight of E-Z Tec DSPMetal Detectors is the easy–to–useTouch Screen (1/4 VGA) Interface.The 4–inch (101 mm) high x 5–inch(127 m) wide angled control, with abacklit screen, allows the user toquickly make changes to the metaldetector without having to scrollthrough different menus. Product set–up, monitoring and operating the metaldetector is simple with the TouchScreen Interface. Numeric data andvalue entries are made through the on–screen keypad.

ELECTRONICSThe E-Z Tec DSP Metal Detector’selectronics have been consolidated andplaced in a NEMA 4X enclosure that can bean integral part of the metal detector ormounted up to 100–feet from the coils. Onlyfour circuit boards are used for improvedfunction and reliability.

The compact cabinet design allows forshorter conveyor lengths and for installationin those areas where space is a premium.

• Stainless Steel Cabinet – Theoscillator and receiving coils arewound on a rigid frame andencapsulated in a rectangular stainlesssteel shell.

• Angled Controls – are either anintegral part of the metal detectorsensing head or installed at a remotelocation. The enclosures are NEMA4X rated. A NEMA 7 or 9 enclosure isavailable.

• Remote Control – The control can belocated up to 100 ft (30 m) away fromthe sensing head.

The SlimTec Aperture Model pro-vides the same highly sensitive detect-ing capabilities as the E-Z Tec ApertureModel, in a design better suited tocertain products and factory situations.

It is particularly effective for detectingmetallic contaminants in wide, thinproducts, such as plastics, rubber,wood, woven materials and particleboard. The narrow profile and reducedmetal–free area of the unit permit it tobe installed in areas with limited spaceand with little isolation of any sur-rounding equipment.

The oscillator and receiving coils arewound on a rigid frame and encapsu-lated within a painted aluminum shell.Surge–protection electronics permit thedetector to withstand high levels ofstatic discharge.

Eriez can provide either analog elec-tronics with manual adjustment forsensitivity, gain, phase and rejectoutput timing or a micro processorversion (MPC) that provides a 99product memory with individualsettings for each product. In addition,the micro processor version provides a

Eriez’ standard Flat Bed SingleSurface E-Z Tec III Metal Detector isideal for a number of applications,products and working environments.

It is particularly effective for detectingmetallic contaminants in large oroversized applications. The flat–surfaced detection area is positionedbeneath the (user–supplied) belt orconveyor. This design can accommo-date materials such as sheet plastics,wood, rubber, woven materials,particle board, and liquids in metal–capped bottles.

The unit’s oscillator and receivingcoils are wound on a rigid frame andencapsulated within a rectangularstainless steel shell.

Vertical Drop Models

Vertical Form, Filland Seal (VFS)

Eriez’ new E-Z Tec® Vertical Form,Fill and Seal (VFS) Metal Detectorsare excellent for detection andremoval of ferrous, nonferrous andstainless metal contaminants.

The E-Z Tec® VFS Metal Detectorwill help improve product purity forproducts processed in Form Fill SealEquipment and other applicationswhere vertical heights are extremelyrestricted.

Its control circuitry allows forinstantaneous electronic recoveryfrom phase adjustments, as well asfield switchable narrow zone/widezone detection capabilities.

Eriez VFS units can be supplied witheither analog or microprocessor (MPC)based electronics. Standard sizes for 4,6 and 8–inch (102, 152 and 203 mm)pipes are available.

Eriez’ E-Z Tec® Low ProfileVertical Drop Metal Detectors areexcellent for detection and removal offerrous, nonferrous and stainlessmetal contaminants in gravity fedpowder or granulated products.

These low profile units accommodatemany applications with restrictiveheight requirements. The combina-tion of negligible metal–free area andquick acting chute reject valve designprovides a minimal height system.

Upon detection, the E-Z Tec LowProfile Metal Detector will activate aspecially designed chute–type rejectvalve to remove the contaminant fromthe product flow.

Each system is manufactured from 304stainless steel and includes an E-Z TecLow Profile Metal Detector with aremote control that can be mounted upto 100 feet (30 m) from the detectionhead. Also included is an antistaticnon–metallic pipe with a groundingstrap which prevents static build up,reducing false detections.

Eriez’ E-Z Tec Narrow ProfileLiquid Line Metal Detectors are usedto detect the presence of ferrous,nonferrous and stainless metalcontaminants in viscous products suchas liquids, slurries, syrups, pastes andmany other pumped products.

When metal is detected in the productflow, a reject signal is channeled to oneof the available output relays. Theoutput relay can be used to activate aball valve, control a visual or audioalarm, or send a signal to a PLC.

In addition to enhancing product purity,Eriez Liquid Line Systems can protectvital downstream equipment from metalin the product stream. Complete

systems can be provided in pipe sizesranging from one–inch (25 mm) to six–inch (150 mm) diameter.

Metal Detector Conveyor Systems

Eriez offers technical expertise whencombining metal detection and custom-ized conveying systems. Engineeringexperience has enabled Eriez to manu-facture the largest Metal DetectionConveyor System ever built (see photoabove). The 80–inch high by 66–inchwide (2032 x 1676 mm) aperture unitprovides excellent sensitivity down to0.480 inch (12 mm) steel. The stainlesssteel framed 30' (9 m) long conveyor caneasily convey up to 2600 pounds(1200 kg) of material.

VIBRATORYFEEDER DRUM

Only Eriez can provide highly special-ized conveying systems combining highspeed vibratory feeders and magneticdrum separators for the separation offerrous contamination, and metaldetectors to monitor the final product forthe presence of nonferrous metals.

Eriez Metal Detector Conveyors maybe equipped with microsized pulleys,1/2–inch (12 mm) in diameter, totransfer small products to and fromadjoining conveyors. Variable speedmotors can also be provided tocompensate for differing productionrates and product sizes. Lockingcasters are also available for allconveying systems to provide easyportability. E-Z Tec DSP Control

Eriez’ state–of–the–art Digital ControlSystem provides a user–friendlyinterface through a menu–driven digitalhierarchy. The digital screen offersalphanumeric displays of all presetfunctions or reject occurrences as theytake place and also records the date andtime of product changes.

Digital processing and controls on allE-Z Tec DSP Metal Detectors allowfast product changes. The active(present) product can be changed viathe Touch–Screen Interface or remotelythrough RS-485 computer interfaceconnections.

50 different product selections can bestored with each product selectiondefining such parameters as sensitivity,gain, phase, product description andrelay states. Unauthorized changes areeliminated by a four level security code.Data memory retention preventsmemory loss. The control providesuser–specified self–checking andperiodic calibration procedures.

The report menu displays report number,product, date, time and magnitude of thereject signal. The internal memoryholds full details of the last 100 rejectsfor visual review, counting up to 10,000rejects. Reports may be uploaded to acomputer via the RS-485 interface port.An unlimited record of reject reports canbe stored on the computer.

• Bar Graph will provide a visualindication of the strength of thedetection signal in relation to themetal size, and is also used to monitorthe phasing–out procedure forproducts.

• Threshold adjustment allows forsetting of the detection threshold forminimum and maximum metalsensitivities.

• Phase adjustment provides theuser with the capability to adjustthe metal detector to minimizeproduct effect and the ability topeak a response to a particularmetal.

• Shift Register stores multipledetections for precise rejection ofmetal. A tachometer input isprovided for variable productspeeds.

• Travel Time is an adjustmentcontrolling delay of the detectionsignal output. This will allowtime for the detected contaminantto be positioned at thedownstream reject device (suchas, air blow off, pusher arm, flipgate, etc.). It can be set from 0-60seconds with a 0.05 secondresolution.

• Reject Time is a variableadjustment for extending thereject output signal. This featureallows the user to adjust the rejectoutput time from 0.05 to 60seconds.

• Output Relays include twoindividually programmable relays,one with two form “C” contactsand the other with one form “C”contact.

• Frequency of operation isoptimized for the aperture size andthe product to be inspected.

• Product Speed ranges from 3 fpmto 8000 fpm (0.02mps to 40 mps)depending on aperture size.

E-Z Tec Analog Control (E-Z Tec V Only)

• The LED display will provide a visualindication of the strength of thedetection signal in relation to themetal size, and is also used tomonitor the phasing–out procedureused for products that cause falsedetection due to the presence ofmoisture, salts or additives.

• Sensitivity control allows adjustmentof the detection threshold forminimum and maximum metalsensitivities.

• Phase provides the user with controlfor adjusting the metal detector forproduct effect.

• Travel Time is an adjustment for delayof the detection signal output. Thiswill allow time for the detectedcontaminant to be positioned at thedownstream reject device (such as, airblow off, pusher bar, flip gate, etc.).

• Reject Time is a variable adjustmentfor extending the reject output signal.This feature allows the user to adjustthe reject output time from 0 to 10seconds.

The E-Z Tec Analog Control utilizes aunique combination of digital circuitryand solid state amplifiers to process thereceived signal. A crystal oscillatorprovides a stable reference and drift freeelectronics and provides the user withmanual selection of either WIDE ZONEdetection or NARROW ZONE detection.

• Wide Zone detection should only beused where the incidence of staticdischarge from product is containedor antistatic pipes are used. Staticelectricity is a unipolar discharge.The polarity will either be positive ornegative causing a disturbance on atleast one of the two receiver coils. Ifthe disturbance is large enough afalse detection could occur.

• Narrow Zone detection will almosteliminate false detections caused bystatic electricity. Narrow Zonerequires each receiver coil to bedisturbed within a given time period,and if only one coil is affected adetection will not take place.

• Mechanical Relays include twoindividual fused (5 amp) relays withindependent control for variousoutput functions (reject devices,alarms, PLC’s, etc.).

Microprocessor Control (MPC) (E-Z Tec V Only)

Eriez’ E-Z Tec Micro ProcessorControl (MPC) provides a userfriendly transition from analogadjustments to digital settings througha menu–driven digital hierarchy. Thedigital screen offers alphanumericdisplays of all preset functions orreject occurrences as they take placeand also records the date and time ofany changes to the preset settings.

Digital processing and controls on allE-Z Tec MPC Metal Detectors allowfast product changes. The active(present) product can be changed via thefront panel ‘touch’ button or remotelythrough the RS–232 or RS–485 com-puter interface connection.

On–site adjustments and settings areinitiated using a 9–button touch panelcontrol. A backlit super twist 8–line x40 character display allows up to 99different product selections, and thecomputer interface allows unlimitedproduct selections, with each productselection defining such parameters as

sensitivity, gain, phase, productdescription and relay states. Unautho-rized changes are eliminated by a threelevel 4–digit security code. Batterybackup provides memory loss protec-tion caused by power outages.

The reject menu displays reportnumber, product, date, time andmagnitude of the reject signal inmillivolts. The internal memory holdsup to 100 reject events for visualreview, or reports can be sent to a localprinter or to a computer via the RS232and RS485 communications ports or aseparate direct printer output port foran unlimited record of reject reports.
