A philosophy of care that emphasizes increasing the independence of residents by supporting them to do as much as possible by themselves.

Why Implement Restorative Care?

Evidence indicates that structured exercises that build strength, flexibility and balance in seniors is an effective intervention to reduce falls and fractures in seniors.

How

By developing exercise programs that focus upon specific goals for residents.

Educating and engaging all staff and family members in supporting residents to be as independent as possible.

Who is eligible to participate?

Residents experiencing the usual path of aging and not acutely recovering from strokes or recent hip fractures.

Residents who can follow simple instructions

Residents who are willing to participate

Arbutus Care Statistics

Total Falls recorded per month at Arbutus Care before Restorative Care was 61

By January 2008 this number was reduced to 44

January 2009 this number was 41 Reducing falls by 28% over the 1st year and

7% in the second year.
