Guidance for SAP NetWeaver BW customers

Customers using SAP NetWeaver Web Application Designer (WAD) should adopt SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio (formerly known as Zen) as their primary tool

for creating dashboards and applications, both on the Web and on mobile devices,

on top of SAP NetWeaver BW.

Customers of SAP BusinessObjects Dashboards should continue with Dashboards and leverage the upcoming HTML5 functionality for mobile dashboards. Customers

using Dashboards on top of SAP NetWeaver BW should strongly consider building

their new dashboards with Design Studio.

See SAPs analytics blog for more detail on our dashboarding strategy and direction

    What is the right tool?

    Promotion Upgrade / Migration

    Promotion Management Upgrade Management Tool

Promotion: Transport content from like system to like system

Systems are the same version E.g. Dev to Test to

Production. Content is primarily document templates,

metadata and schedules. Not document instances.

Upgrade: Transport and transform content from previous version to newer version Content includes all objects.

Migrate: Transport and transform content from a previous platform to a new platform or architecture

    Full system vs staged upgrade

    Stage/Incremental Upgrade Full/Complete Upgrade

    Upgrade content in stages

    Two systems to maintain

    Requires lockdown of department folder

Issues affect only the upgraded entities

    Short downtime

    Suitable for large scale deployment

    Upgrade all content at once

    Only one system to maintain

Requires lockdown of the entire system

    Issues affect the entire system

    Long downtime

Suitable for small to medium size deployment

  • 2013 SAP AG or an SAP affiliate company. All rights reserved. 40

Upgrade Management Tool Considerations and best practices

    Content Considerations System Considerations

Incremental migration should be suggested if the content is huge

Which content is being migrated should be taken into account

Amount of rework should be calculated

Third party user groups should not be imported to the destination system prior to Upgrade process

Content validation should be performed post upgrade

Architecture changes are taken into account

Source system is checked for issues/inconsistencies

Services not utilized during upgrade should be turned down, if possible

UMT should be run from a machine which has great amount of available resources. Eg. RAM, Temp dir etc.

Utilization of Source/Target system should be minimum to zero.

    Overrides

A single Adaptive Processing Service (APS) can access an LCMOverride folder at a time. One instance of Adaptive Processing Server (APS) containing Promotion Management Services per landscape

    is recommended

    Scheduling

Always schedule promotion jobs when the server load is at its minimum One instance of Promotion Management Scheduling Service per landscape is recommended

    Test Promotion

Enables you to Test a promotion job without affecting destination Provides information newly added objects & other changes Warns of any name or CUID conflicts & missing dependent objects

    Promote with Security

Replicates the security structure of the source system in the destination environment Preserves row/column level restrictions implemented with the metadata

    Promotion management best practices General

  • 2013 SAP AG or an SAP affiliate company. All rights reserved. 43

    Promotion management best practices Rollback

    Rollback makes sense when

Scope of changes to be rolled back is large

    Change must be reversed quickly

    Issue is in Production

    Recommendations

Only rollback when it is absolutely necessary

Avoid rolling back more than one version

Rollback has a cost disk space

Enable rollback only for critical systems

  • 2013 SAP AG or an SAP affiliate company. All rights reserved. 44

Promotion management best practices Dedicated PM server

Allows for a refresh of other system without impacting LCM.

Allows for easier patching. Maintain LCM instance at most recent patch

Allows for easier promotion of the same content to test as to production

Avoids security issues when LCM job owner does not have access to content.

Next best choice would be to use Production server for promotion management

  • 2013 SAP AG or an SAP affiliate company. All rights reserved. 45

Promotion management best practices Dedicated services

As with other Adaptive Processing Server services, it is recommended to split the APS to create an

Adaptive LCM server (APS) with the below services

    Promotion Management Service

    Promotion Management Clearcase Service

    Visual Difference Service

    Trace Log Service

Similarly, Split the Adaptive Job Server to create an Adaptive LCM Job Server(AJS) with the following

    services

    Performance Management Scheduling Service

    Visual Difference Scheduling Service

    Trace Log Service
