    THE PRESIDENT’STHE PRESIDENT’STHE PRESIDENT’STHE PRESIDENT’S

FLIGHT DECKFLIGHT DECKFLIGHT DECKFLIGHT DECK Sometimes, the world from aboveems too beautiful, too wonderful, too distant for

uman eyes to see … Sometimes, flying feels toood-like to be attained by man.”

    — Charles A. Lindbergh, 1953 . most people, the sky is the limit. To those who love avi-on , the sky is home . We are not most people, that is why

e joined EAA and Chapter 237. There are many reasonsr our “love”, and these are just a few:

    • The ability to take a hassle-free trip to some prettycool destinations with friends and family...forgetthose TSA lines.

    • Taking someone up for their first flight in a "small plane" is incredibly rewarding.

    • The flight can be as exciting as the destination itself.• The view is killer.• If flying wasn't a challenge, it wouldn't be nearly as

rewarding. And without the bad days, there couldn't be any good days.

    • Aviation is all about building and expanding yourknowledge, no matter how experienced you are.

    • Any pilot will tell you that they met many of their best friends through aviation.

    • Sure, that lunch trip to another state may not benecessary...but it's fun to use your pilot privileges todo it.

    • Oh yeah, and don't forget about that amazing feelingafter nailing a crosswind landing.

e love to share our passion, whether flying with a pas-nger or in a group. In order to facilitate more FUN forr members, Chapter 237 needs a CAG : Commander,r Group - the informal name for the seniorS Navy officer who, as leader of the Carrier Air Wing, issponsible for all the embarked squadrons, their aircraftd their personnel aboard.

EAA, in partnership with Dynon Avionics and the FAA, has beenawarded a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) to install Dynon’s

EFIS-D10A in certain standard category aircraft. This breakthroughSTC enables the inexpensive, but very capable, avionics that haveserved the experimental and light-sport worlds for decades to finallyhave a pathway into the type-certificated market. The Dynon systemis a direct replacement for a vacuum-driven attitude indicator, andthe STC currently applies to the Cessna 150, 152, and 172 series andthe Piper PA-28 and PA-38 series. More aircraft are expected to beadded soon.

EAA worked extensively with the FAAand Dynon to show compliance with reg-

ulations and develop a new certification pathway for safety-enhancing equip-ment. The long track record of the D10A

product line and its conformity to a vari-ety of industry standards helped it be-come the first device accepted by theFAA in this pioneering effort. In additionto Dynon’s proven reliability, the unitdelivers a wealth of information to the

pilot and even has an integrated angle ofattack feature (with the installation of an

optional probe). EAA installed the D10Ain its 1976 Cessna 172M and submittedto a series of flight tests with an FAAtest pilot, which went flawlessly.

EAA intends to begin selling the STC as soon as possible, hopefully later this spring, at a nominal price point in linewith its existing autofuel STC. In addition to the D10A,more products are actively being explored as EAA is willingto work with other manufacturers to bring down costs and

reduce barriers to recreational flying. Stay tuned for moredetails!

Become an Aviation Legend…and Possibly Rich!!!

Introducing the EAA Founder’s Innovation Prize ! The goal of the prize is to keep the spirit of innovation alive inthe EAA community and leverage its creativity toward solving specific challenges facing the general aviationcommunity. The top finishers will receive a cash grant toward developing their product and prominent exposure atAirVenture.

The 2016 EAA Founder’s Innovation Prize is a contest to solve the problem of fatal loss of control accidents inamateur-built aircraft through innovation. The contest is intentionally open-ended, with the only stated goal to re-

duce fatalities from this type of accident in amateur-built aircraft dramatically over the next decade - 25% in thenext five years, 50% in the next ten.

Loss of control (LOC) in flight is the leading cause of fatal accidents in general aviation, particularly in amateur- built aircraft. Fatal LOC events include base-to-final stalls, departure stalls, loss of control while maneuvering, spatial disorientation, and more. The 2016 contest seeks ways to solve this problem. The solution could be tech-nical in nature or otherwise.

The judging criteria include: 1) Cost to implement, 2) Ease of Installation, 3) Wide Applicability to the GAFleet (with a focus on amateur-built aircraft), 4) Effectiveness in mitigating the problem.

The top five entries will be judged live at AirVenture 2016 during a Theater in the Woods event. The judging panel is as follows, and these guys know what they’re talking about: Burt Rutan, Dick VanGrunsven (Van’s RVdesigner), Charlie Precourt (NASA astronaut), Rod Machado, and Dave Morss (preeminent civilian test pilot).

The winning individual or team will receive a prize of $25,000 , with $10,000 awarded for second place, and$5,000 for third. The five finalists will also be featured in EAA media leading up to the final award. Initial appli-cations will be accepted through June 1 st, 2016, and final submission of all material for consideration are due July1st.

With all of the talented and innovative members in Chapter 237, I have no doubt one (or a team) of us shouldn’t be able to say, “Show me the money”!
