Middle School Food Drive Runs Until November 13 Students Write Letters to Local Veterans Sixth graders in Mrs. Baldigowski’s class recently penned letters to local veterans thanking them for their service. The letters were mailed to retired veterans as well as the Library VFW Post 6664, the 911th Airlift Wing, the 171st Air Refueling Wing and the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. Students also discussed the historical beginnings and significance of Veterans Day. Their homework was to find a local veteran and personally thank him or her.

The South Park School District is now an Amazon Associate! So what does that mean? Eligible purchases made via a special link on the South Park School District’s website will generate funds for the Chromebook program.

Just remember to click before you shop!

Before you shop on Amazon, visit the special “Shop” page on sparksd.org by clicking here and then click the “Shop South Park School District” link at the top of the page. You must visit the Shop South Park School District page every time before you shop at Amazon!

VeteransSixth graders in Mrs. Baldigowski’s class recently penned letters to local veterans thanking them for their service. First Graders Perform Contraction SurgeryFirst grade students in Ms. O’Brien’s and Mrs. Lowe’s class learned about contractions by performing contraction surgery last week. Each student dressed the part and carefully combined words into contractions on the operating tables!

The fifth grade hallway looked very spooky during the month of October thanks to the annual door decorating contest. The doors looked fantastic! Great job, fifth grade!

Three Students Represent South Park at District Honors Choir Festival

Three South Park High School students were selected to participate in the PMEA District 1 Honors Choir Festival on October 27 and 28 at Trinity High School. Senior Samantha Hawk was chosen as a soprano 1. Senior Carly Cygrymus and junior Tess Marlin were each chosen as an alto 1.

The three students prepared the music on their own and rehearsed for a little more than one day with their guest conductor, Melanie Cantana, from Waynesburg University.

Samantha, Carly and Tess did an excellent job representing South Park throughout the festival and at their final concert on Saturday afternoon.

South Park Students Win Steel Center Extra Effort

AwardsEvery quarter, Steel Center for Career and Technical Education recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding attitude, work ethic, attendance and dependability. Instructors choose students to receive the Extra Effort Award.

Fourth Graders Compete in History BowlEight fourth grade students competed in the History Bowl at the Heinz History Center on Thursday, October 26. Students were given questions and had to find the answers throughout the different displays of Pittsburgh history.

The students who represented South Park were Alixandra Beaver, Ayden Bowser, Sophia Hale, Kada Lamonde, Livia Monaco, Kaitlyn Polk, Lillian Pritts and Lucas Wendt.

Middle School Students Compete in History BowlMiddle school gifted students participated in the annual History Bowl at the Heinz History Center. Students engaged in essay writing, scavenger hunts and projects throughout the museum.

Students from schools in Allegheny and Washington counties competed in the event.

The students who represented South Park were: Thomas Cardimen, Preston Cecotti, Owen Cernetic, Logan Dees, Anthony DeProspo, Delanie Ferguson, Gianna Girol, Cole Hammack, McKenna Kimberlin, Walter Kivala, Nathaniel Klocek, Austin Lafferty, Tyler Mitchell, Rocco Nardozzo, Elliot Oliphant, Delaney Price, Natasha Rakip, Sean Swartzwelder and Brody Wojcik.

South Park Students Participate in Pitt and Slippery Rock Band Days

South Park marching band members recently participated in band days at the University of Pittsburgh and Slippery Rock University.

At the Pitt football game on Saturday, October 28, 32 members of the South Park High School band rehearsed with members of the University of Pittsburgh marching band and later performed during a pregame concert and during halftime on the field.

Fifth Graders Enjoy Halloween Reading

Accelerated readers in Mrs. Turko’s and Mrs. Elkin’s classes enjoyed a special Halloween treat with help from librarian Mrs. Ruscitto. The fifth graders dropped everything and read by flashlight while listening to some spooky tunes. Mrs. Ruscitto rewarded the top readers with a treat. Mrs. Turko and Mrs. Elkin did a great job motivating their students to read. Everyone had a great time!

Red Ribbon Week Held at High SchoolSouth Park High School participated in National Red Ribbon Week from October 23 through October 27 to raise awareness of the dangers of drugs.

As part of Red Ribbon Week, students decorated trick-or-treat bags with anti-drug slogans and distributed them at local grocery stores. Students also signed a banner, pledging to be drug free. Students also dressed according to various themes demonstrating positive choices.

South Park High School Students Learn About Careers on Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers

South Park High School students got a chance to sail on Pittsburgh’s three rivers during a recent vocational trip to the Gateway Clipper Fleet. Students learned about careers from a number of guest speakers from the Gateway Clipper Fleet, Pittsburgh River Rescue and Patrol, the Coast Guard, a river diving company and barge companies. Students also learned about environmental jobs available on and around the three rivers.

Middle School Students Are Top Cookie Dough Sellers

South Park Middle School students Casey O’Toole and Colby O’Toole were recently recognized by South Park Middle School Principal Mr. Kevin Monaghan and Assistant Principal Dr. Christine Liekar as the top cookie dough sellers at South Park Middle School.

Congratulations, Casey and Colby!

High School Students Attend BalletSouth Park High School students were treated to a matinee performance of the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s Dracula on Friday, October 27 at the Benedum.

Fall BreakFall break for South Park students begins with a one-hour early dismissal on Wednesday, November 22. Students are off on November 23, 24 and 27. Classes will resume on Tuesday, November 28.
