IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM THE GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT:

Juniors

May 4th is the deadline for the June SAT. Juniors who plan to attend a four year college after graduation and who have not yet taken an SAT or ACT are encouraged to register. Go to: www.collegeboard.com to sign up.

All juniors participated in a special assembly this week presented by RCGC admissions staff to discuss the community college option. Students will also have the opportunity to hear from over 30 four year colleges, universities, and trade schools next fall.

Juniors who finish out this year ranking in the top 15% of their class will be eligible for the NJ STARS program, which provides free community college tuition for up to 5 semesters. Students who are close but do not qualify at the end of this year will have another opportunity to qualify at the end of senior year. For more info, go to www.njstars.net.

RCGC Seniors:

RCGC hosted 62 seniors for a full day of orientation this week. These seniors plan to attend RCGC in the fall and were able to meet with ad visors and register for their first semester of college classes. Perhaps the most exciting part was getting their college photo IDs! Congrats to all of these students as they begin this next phas e of higher education.

A great day was had by all!

Wednesday, May 1st was the firm deadline for any changes to course requests for next year as well as waivers. Student choices are finalized at this point.

We have 5 weeks of classes remaining followed by final exams. Students are encouraged to push through and finish out strong. Any student who needs extra help should touch base with their teachers to make arrangements to stay after school.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT NEWS:

On Tuesday, April 30, 2019, three of our CP English III classes, led by Mrs. Chambers, Ms. Coffey, and Mr. Bier, visited the Gloucester County Courthouse in Woodbury. The visit corresponded with the classes’ reading of To Kill a Mockingbird and The Crucible, both of which involve characters who face the process and implications of standing trial for crimes they did not commit. The classes were treated to a brief history and tour of the courthouse and a question‐and‐answer session with a local attorney and one of the county’s judges. Students also performed a mock trial, during which they were expected to practice certain roles, such as plaintiff, defendant, and witnesses, and formulate questions and a verdict based on the evidence provided. In addition, several representatives from the courthouse observed and offered commentary upon the students’ performance. The visit proved an insightful and meaningful learning experience that provided students with an understanding of the court system and a better context for the literature they have been studying.
