Eagle Sightings FRIDAY HARBOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL “Home of the Eagles” 95 Grover St. P.O Box 458 Friday Harbor, WA 98250 (360)378-5209 Diane Ball, Principal
FHES will receive two Samsung Galaxy® Tabs and the 6th graders will have the opportunity to win additional
technology prizes for their school’s STEM program.
Our 6th graders have become state finalists in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest, a nationwide competition to increase interest in
STEM by challenging teachers and students to take topics out of traditional classroom settings and into local communities. 6th graders moved onto this round of the competition due to their interest in using STEM to address pollinator conservation in their community. During the next phase of the competition, our 6th graders will create an activity plan to address the issue in an educational setting. 51 state winners will be announced in December. Through their extensive work with scientists from the Kwiaht organization and National Historical Park Island Butterfly Project, 6th graders recognized their small island community ecosystem as part of the worldwide decline in pollinator population and habitat. Our 6th graders will plan and implement a community based improvement project using STEM skills and knowledge to: use GIS technology to map existing patches of bare ground and gardens in the Friday Harbor Urban Growth Area (UGA); apply the scientific method to analyze extant scientific knowledge and data of native pollinators nesting and foraging behavior to determine where additional habitat patches should be established to provide “pollinator corridors” through town; and reach out to businesses and homeowners along these corridors to set aside brushy patches and hedgerows, erect pollinator hotels, and establish student designed garden habitats where needed. Students will facilitate change in their community by distributing seed packets, designing effective pollinator hotel prototypes, and establishing a demonstration pollinator corridor through the school grounds (25 acres, the largest parcel in the UGA).

LICE UPDATE Recently there has been head lice found on students in different classes. FHES conducts five regularly scheduled
all-school lice checks, but our checks do not replace your own vigilant monitoring of your child’s hair and scalp.
We ask that every parent be on the alert and check his or her child often. Head lice are spread from head-to-head
contact and can be passed during play and sleepovers, as well as during family gatherings.
It is important that if you do find evidence of lice on your child, you treat him or her with anti-lice shampoo. Once
any family member is identified with head lice, all household members should be checked. If lice or nits are seen,
that family member should be treated as well. After treatment, nits should be removed by careful and thorough
combing with a special fine-toothed nit comb.
Since FHES has a no-nit policy, it is important that any student who is found to have lice be kept home and treated
with anti-lice shampoo. A student can return to school after treatment and when there are no visible nits on the
hair shafts.
Working together helps protect all children. Thank you for your cooperation.

Why Is Hand Washing So Important?
Kids don’t always listen when parents tell them to wash their hands before eating, after
using the bathroom, or when they come inside from playing. But it is a message worth
repeating---hand washing is by far the best way to prevent germs from spreading and to
keep kids from getting sick.
Hand washing is the first line of defense against germs. Germs spread in many ways, including:
o touching dirty hands
o changing dirty diapers
o through contaminated water and food
o through droplets in the air release during a cough or sneeze
o on contaminated surface
o through contact with a sick person’s body fluids.
When kids come into contact with germs, they can unknowingly become infected simply by touching their eyes, nose, or
mouth. And once they are infected, it is usually just a matter of time before the whole family comes down with the
same illness.
Good hand washing protects against the spread of many illnesses-from the common cold (which is responsible for 22
million lost school days each year) to more serious illness such as meningitis, flu, hepatitis A, and most types of
infectious diarrhea.
How Do You Scrub Those Germs Away? Here is how to wash your hands correctly:
o Wash your hands in warm water.
o Use soap and lather up for about 20 seconds, making sure to get between fingers and under the nails where germs
like to hide. Sing the “Happy Birthday” song to make sure you have washed long enough!
o Rinse and dry well with a clean towel or paper towel.
Teach this routine to your kids, or better yet, wash your own hands together often so they learn how important this
good habit is.
To minimize the germs that are passed around your family, make regular hand washing a rule, especially:
o Before eating and cooking
o After using the bathroom
o After cleaning around the house
o After touching animals, including family pets
o Before and after visiting or taking care of sick people
o After blowing one’s nose, coughing, or sneezing
o After being outdoors (gardening, playing, etc.)
Don’t underestimate the mighty power of hand washing!
It’s inexpensive, easy to do, and can save you many trips to the doctor’s office!

Deposit a Gift Funding Excellence at FHES is something anyone can get behind! This holiday season we are valuing your time and the time of our already busy students and asking for your help in a social media fundraising campaign.
No cookie dough, no poinsettias, no gift wrap….mark your calendar!
On December 1st, national day of giving #GivingTuesday, our platform fee for using this Deposit a Gift site will
be waived and donated back to our school! With a click and a credit card, a safe and secure donation can be
made to support your child and the school community of FHES! It takes a Village - please share Funding
Excellence at FHES. Post, tweet, or spread via whatever means of social media you engage in. Ask your friends
and family, near and far, to give generously for the benefit of your student and their school community.
As you know, traditional fundraisers take about 50% of the profit to cover the cost of goods. With our social
media campaign, about 93% of the donation will go directly to FHES students! If the donation is made on
Tuesday, December 1st, we’ll yield almost 97% of that donation. Donations by check can be brought to our
school office or mailed to: FHES PTA PO Box 458 Friday Harbor, WA 98250.
Your dollars will support current needs; including transportation costs for Experiential Field Trips, 120
Chromebooks, Family Math Carnival Night, Family Literacy Night, Parent Informational Math Night, Art
Enrichment Program, and the General PTA Fund for teacher stipends, translators for evening events, and so
much more!

FHES School Community would like to give a heartfelt
thank you to our local Masonic Lodge for their
enthusiastic support of the 6th Grade Mountain
School Adventure. Through their efforts, the Masonic Lodge helped raise monies to ensure all 6th graders are able to participate in Mountain School’s life changing experience.
Each year the 6th graders return excited about their time at Mountain School as can be
demonstrated by feedback from their adventure:
“Our days are filled with hiking in a pristine natural environment located in the North Cascades National Park--a Washington Gem! One extreme hike led us to a breathtaking waterfall. Just imagine all we accomplished and how healthy we were at the end of our spectacular hikes. The learning never ceased. We studied carnivores, fungi, trees, plants, insects, you name it, we studied it! The North Cascades Institute was our “classroom”...an outdoor classroom located on the shores of Diablo Lake! While hiking on trails we explored mountain ecosystems first-hand through experiential activities integrating science, math, art, social studies and environmental conservation. Night hikes to the dam with our graduate student leaders and engaging talks with the Ranger filled our minds and dreams with the historical origins of our Mountain home. One of our favorite events was when we became stakeholders--scientists, government officials, ranchers, hunters, and conservationist debating the controversial topic of the reintroduction of the Gray Wolves to the Northern Cascades. We took on roles, challenging our own perspectives, to develop our ability to be flexible in our thinking and to consider the needs of others.”
Students reported to the Masons that their Mountain School experience was a catalyst for forming lifelong bonds with nature as well as with each other. They stated how their experience nurtured community along the paths as they worked together for a common cause and around the campfire as they sang silly songs. One of their classmates stated her goal for Mountain School was to change her perspective about nature. Students agreed that their experience strengthened their desire to embrace their role as citizen scientists and environmental stewards.
6th graders ensured the Masons that the ripple of their support will be never ending as they Pay It Forward by being active participants in conservation and developing relationships and networks that encourage and support positive outcomes.
Thank You Masonic Lodge of Friday Harbor and to the Friday Harbor Community, Our Village certainly made a difference with the positive energy shared by all
During FHES's 1st Annual STEM with the Arts Activity Night and Masonic hosted Spaghetti Feed.
