Reliably safe and very economical

No industrial production plant can be operatedwithout seals. The number of sealing locations andmedia to be controlled is correspondingly large, as isthe number of plant components that need to besealed: rotating equipment such as pumps, agitatorsand compressors, valves and flanges, not to mentionpipes and ducts carrying gases and liquids.

The reliability of the entire plant depends on manyindividual parts. The seals, as key components, playan important role. They protect systems andcomponents from external influences andcontamination as well as help prevent emissions.They thus increase process safety, availability and theeconomic viability of the plant.

DiamondFace technology: a landmark in mechanical seal coating technology

EagleBurgmann made a quantum leap inmechanical seal technology when itintroduced DiamondFace in 2007.

Innovative technologyA microcrystalline layer with all the attributesof natural diamond is applied to the slidingfaces by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at2,000 °C (3,632 °F) in a vacuum furnace.Thick layers coupled with extremely flat and

uniform sealing surfaces characterize thisprocedure, which was developed together withthe Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineeringand Thin Films in Braunschweig, Germany.

Outstanding propertiesSeal faces with DiamondFace are extremelyhard and resistant to wear, have excellentthermal conductivity and exhibit excellentchemical resistance. The layer adhesionexceeds all known practical requirements.

Upstream and midstream processes

Oil and gas production offshore and onshore requiresdifferent technologies and equipment according to theoperating environment. Sealing technology in distillation processes:Demanding conditions - reliable solutions.

For distillation, the crude oil is first heated to around350 °C (662 °F) and then broken down intoindividual products. Substances with a boiling pointabove this temperature become gaseous and rise in

the distillation column.

High temperatures and different compositions ofcrude oils - which can also be corrosive (hydrogensulfide + sulfur) and abrasive - are some of thegreatest challenges faced by the sealing technologyused in refinery distillation facilities.

EagleBurgmann sealing systems have proven theiradded value over many years for sealing applicationsin both atmospheric and vacuum distillationprocesses. The portfolio of robust single and dual

mechanical seals with the necessary buffer, coolingand quench systems is optimized for distillationapplications.

We guarantee reliable sealing of the completeprocess chain in distillation facilities with our provenH75 and LL9 pusher seal types, while the MFLWTand MBS metal bellows seals are preferred for

Cracking:Overcoming extreme temperatures

with “cool” sealing technology.

The fraction of crude oil which cannot be distilledfurther is then cracked. In this process, long chainmolecules are split into smaller molecules underpressure and temperature in order to generateadditional short-chain hydrocarbons such as gasoline,diesel or kerosene.

Different cracking methods with specific sealingrequirements are used, depending on the operator’srequirements.

Thermal cracking methods: steam cracking, visbreakingand coking are used to produce different products.While the starting mixture is heated to temperaturesbetween 370 °C (698 °F) and 460 °C (860 °F), thepressures remain below 15 bar (218 PSI).

Catalytic cracking methods: the fuel yield can beincreased to around 60 % with the aid of a zeolitecatalyst. Petroleum components, middle distillatesand gases are generated. Process temperatures canreach up to 500 °C (932 °F).

Hydrocracking methods: The most flexible method inrelation to the crude oil used and the productsgenerated is also the most cost-intensive due to thehigh hydrogen consumption. The operating conditionsrange between pressures of 70 … 200 bar (1,015 …2,900 PSI) and temperatures of 350 °C … 500 °C(662 °F … 932 °F).

The plant components and thus the sealingtechnology used must remain in operation, withoutinterruption, over long periods at extremely hightemperatures and pressures. Reliability andavailability are thus the decisive criteria.

Gas processing:Sealing critical gases

Refinery gas occurs during distillation and post-processing of the crude oil. The gas mixture largelyconsists of methane, propane, butane and hydrogen.As it is contaminated with various substances, the

gas is cleaned in scrubbers and is often used forheating. Gas fractions that can be cost-effectivelyexploited, such as ethylene and propylene, areseparated and supplied to the petrochemical industry.

The significant rotating equipment in theseapplications are compressors, in addition to theprocess pumps.

Demands placed on the sealing technology are high.Extreme temperatures below -100 °C (-148 °F), highspeeds and pressures, media in the gaseous or liquidstate, combined with flammability and the risks thatthe gases pose to the environment demanduncompromising technology and sealing.

Our robust DGS and PDGS compressor seals haveestablished their position as the default solution inthe field of gas-lubricated mechanical seals forcritical gases such as oxygen, hydrogen or carbon

dioxide. We largely apply pusher type H75 and LL9UCmechanical seals to seal process pumps, while ourMFL and MBS682 series metal bellows seals haveproven their value in cryogenic processes.

explosive mixtures.

The hydrocarbons occurring within the refineryare further treated in various processes according torequirements for special end products andcomposition.

For example, the reforming process serves toincrease the octane rating of the gasoline which -untreated - has a very low knock resistance(40 ... 60) and is thus unsuitable for modern enginesthat need 91 ... 98 octane fuels. To this end,naphthene is converted by dehydration andisomerization into aromatics with high octane ratings.The reactions take place at between 450 °C …550 °C (842 °F … 1,022 °F) and under pressuresranging from 15 … 60 bar (218 … 870 PSI).

The base oil also cannot be used straight away tomanufacture engine oil because of its properties.The aromatics need to be removed first, then theparaffin wax is extracted. The final step is to remove

impurities.

The sealing of flammable and explosive mediamixtures (in compliance with the German TechnicalInstructions on Clean Air Control (TA-Luft) and theATEX guidelines is one of the biggest challengesfacing sealing technology in these processes.

Mature, standardized mechanical seal solutions(types H75, LL9UC, MFL and LY) have proven theiradded value all around the world for all kinds ofprocess pumps.

Heavy hydrocarbons:Simple solutions - with the right seal.

Heavy hydrocarbons such as bitumen from thevacuum distillation process and thermal crackingmethods are converted into gases, fuels, middledistillates and pet coke in the coker unit. The starting

product is first heated to around 500 °C (932 °F),cracking the long-chain hydrocarbons into shortchains. Considerable quantities of saleable coke areproduced as a by-product of this process.

High process temperatures required by the process,due to the high solidifying points, combined with theextremely contaminated media, are the mainchallenges for the mechanical seal technology.

Technically mature MFLWT and Y9 high-temperaturemetal bellows seals and suitably designedEagleBurgmann supply systems have been mostsuccessful in this challenging environment.

On the other hand, EagleBurgmann packings andpacking cartridge units type 9984 significantlycontribute to increased throughput in refineriesworld-wide. As a critical process component inhydraulic decoking systems the packing cartridgeshelp to increase life time and productivity of the unit.
