From the Principal Cont’d Environmental Leadership Program 2018 launches the second year of our Environmental Leadership Program at Eagleby State School. It enables students in Year 5 with the opportunity to explore leadership roles and responsibilities. Students lead small groups through different areas around the school working to reduce our carbon impact through reusing, recycling and reducing the amount of waste generated within our school. Each of the three groups meets for at least one lunchtime a week: Food Scrapes, Worm Farm and Growing Food; Gardening; Power Rangers.

Food Scrapes, Worm Farm and Growing Food Our worm farm is one area that the students have had great success in. Food scraps that would normally go in the rubbish bin are now feeding the worms and generating ‘worm tea’ that is use to fertilise our vegetable gardens. The student have wonderful experiences growing corn, bean, tomatoes and strawberries that have been loaded into a cart and distributed a couple of times a week during playtimes with fresh produce for students to eat. Unfortunately as school has returned this year, our worm farm has been targeted a couple of times. On one occasion the majority of the worms have been “taken” and on another occasion, the remaining worms have been “lost” due to their home being tipped over and scattered. This has come as an enormous blow to the students who have worked hard to establish the farm. The farm takes about 2 months before the worms start generating ‘worm tea’ hence the process will need to start again. Your help is needed! As part of our school community we request that you talk to your child regarding the importance this program plays and the effect this type of incidence has on the school community.

Gardening The Gardening group takes care of areas around the school that need attention. This often includes weeding and mulching. It can also involve planting gardens to add beauty, attract bird life and ensure a drought resistant garden.

The Year 5 Environmental Leaders that facilitate this group guide us as a school with our electricity and recycling management, therefore support each classroom Power Ranger to make sure that their classroom is: • Efficient with Electricity usage – everything is turned off when not needed, temperature

check for air conditioning, lights, projector bulbs; • Milk and juice cartons; Glass bottles and jars; Plastic bottles and containers (1-6) on the

bottle; Aluminium cans and colour steel cans are collected in the classrooms, staffroom and office;

• Paper and cardboard to be collected in classrooms, staffroom and office. Our Year 5 Environmental Leader Power Rangers have been hard at work preparing for their Junior Assembly performance and creating posters for the recycling boxes.

Play Activities Top Oval Go outside and play! Does that sound familiar? When I was a little girl growing up in a small coastal town in South Australia my parent’s voices echoed that saying as a constant reminder to go outside and explore, to use our creativity, to rehearse our problem solving skills with our friends and to have many opportunities to enact our imagination. In their wisdom my parents intuitively knew what research is telling us today. Child’s play is not just all fun and games, but is essential and a crucial component in the growth and development of the brain, body and intellect. The neural pathways connect information to travel through the brain, the more neural pathways, the larger the brain. A child’s neural pathways is determined by the type of human contact, interactions and stimulating experiences they are exposed to in their early years. Today’s research supports our vision and beliefs at Eagleby State School: students who engage in rich quality play experiences will assist them in building and strengthening brain pathways. Play creates a brain that has increased ‘flexibility and improved potential for learning later in life’. To enact our vision and understanding of the importance of engaging and stimulating play experiences, a Top Oval Playtime timetable has been introduced where all students have the opportunities to construct knowledge of their world by investigating new materials, ideas and events.

From the Principal Cont’d Each day students have the opportunity to use their creativity, imagination and problem solving skills. “Splash About Wednesday” has been a huge success where students experiment and discuss how the positioning of the noodle on the water wall would affect how quickly the water flows or the hypotheses students are making with how many cups of water would they need to use to fill the water can. Through exploration, experimentation and manipulation of objects during Splash About Wednesday students are making links and joyfully articulating their findings. A fabulous cup of tea can be had near the sand pit with our little kitchen. Students can be seen mimicking older people washing dishes, measuring sand and really having a fabulous time. There are diggers, wheelbarrows, saucepans, frying pans, buckets, spades and muffin trays all being used in the sandpit. On “Ships ahoy Monday” students are provided with pegs, wood and material free to explore and stimulate their creativity and imagination. Students have positively embraced the new top oval program. To hear and see students listening to another person’s point of view, cooperating, helping, sharing and solving problems collaboratively has been a highlight and illustrated the true impact of the importance of play.

Curriculum - What are we learning at school ? Year 2 English: Students are listening to, reading, and viewing visual a variety of spoken and written texts exploring the big idea of “What’s all the buzz about?” to explore how bees live and work together, and what we as humans can learn from them. They are exploring the essential questions: Is my strategy assisting my understanding? How can reading improve my learning? Am I making reasonable predictions with the information I have read? How do the relationships between characters influence their behaviours? Through different learning experiences, the students are exploring the range of strategies people use to solve and understand complex texts. They are selecting good fit books and are rehearsing how effective readers predict, discuss and analyse the reasons of character changes. During writing, Year 2 students are exploring the essential questions: How do I change the style of my writing to suit my purpose? Why is it important to check and edit what I have written? How do I make my writing more interesting? The students are continuing to develop their skill at constructing a variety of sentences and choosing appropriate conjunctions when writing for different purposes. They are developing their understanding of how to make their writing readable through the power of punctuation. Science: This term, the Year Two students are extending their knowledge and understanding of Atomic Theory. They are continuing to revise and use the periodic table and exploring how different atoms are metals, non-metals, semi metals or noble gases. They are investigating how to make molecules using sing and double bonds.

History: This term, students are exploring history through looking at their own changes in their local community. They are exploring the key questions: What aspects of the past can you see today? What remains of the past are important to the local community? Through different learning opportunities, the students are exploring local sites in the community. The students pose questions about the significance of these sights and how they have stayed the same and have changed.

Year 4 English: This term in English, students will listen to, view and read a variety of spoken and written texts to explore the magnificent Wonders of the World. During writing they are exploring the essential questions: What makes writing worth reading? Who determines what is ‘good writing’? How can we make our own writing come to life in our writing? Students are participating in hands-on activities to rehearse constructing a variety of sentences, how to use cohesive links to make connections and sequence ideas within paragraphs and whole texts as well as how to use punctuation effectively. During reading the students are exploring the essential questions: How does a good reader make meaning? What role does analysis play in our understanding of a text? Why do some reading strategies fit better than others? Students are rehearsing skills such as selecting appropriate reading strategy, identifying key information in texts and critically thinking about content and author choices to influence the

narrative of a story. Science: This term Year Four students are continuing to explore and extend their Atomic Theory knowledge and understanding. They are continuing to build molecules using single and double bonds. Students explored the electrical charge of matter called forces and investigated electrical circuits.

History: Students are investigating the European exploration and the movement of people through the inquiry questions: • Why did the great journeys of exploration occur? • Why did the Europeans settle in Australia? Students are exploring how the exploration journeys of the great explorers resulted in colonisation and the building of different empires around the world. They investigate how remains of the past can reveal aspects of what was life like and pose questions about the ways colonisation affected Australia at the time.
