Getting It Right For Every Child (GIRFEC)

Getting It Right For Every Child (GIRFEC) is of utmost importance to all staff at Eaglesham Primary School and Nursery Class. Support for pupils is co-ordinated by Mrs Black (DHT) for nursery/primary 1 and by Mrs Livingstone (DHT) for primary 2 through to primary 7.

Most pupils will require additional support at some point in their school journey. Reasons can be various, e.g. bereavement or other family circumstances, illness, immature social skills, emotional support or support with learning. Support for learning could be for literacy, maths and numeracy or motor skills development.

An annual calendar of quality assurance procedures ensures appropriate identification procedures are in place to monitor and track the meeting of pupil needs. The need for additional support to meet pupil needs is identified through observation of performance in class, tracking of assessment data, planned professional dialogue and a close working relationship with parents. Support strategies are put in place in consultation with parents. Sometimes it is parents who feel they need support in supporting their child and we would encourage parents to contact the school to discuss such a need further.

Support for learning strategies can be provided by the Class Teacher (CT), Pupil Support Assistant (PSA), Additional Support Needs Teacher (ASNT), promoted member of staff or professional from an external agency. Strategies can be temporary or in place for an extended period of time, depending on the nature of the identified need and are applied to individual pupils one to one or to groups of pupils as appropriate. Initially it is the class teacher who will make provision to reinforce work which has previously been taught. A PSA can provide additional reinforcement using frequent 5 minute over learning activities such as flashcards or games. PSA support can also include behavioural supports, physiotherapy exercises and personal care. ASNTs work in tandem with class teachers, sharing their expertise and resources as well as working directly with pupils. Direct input can be given by ASNTs within the classroom; sometimes an alternative location such as the Learning Lab or the Base makes for a better environment increasing impact and so withdrawing from class can be the preferred option. In keeping with GIRFEC procedures, bespoke strategies for individual pupils which give additional support to their learning or wider health and wellbeing needs are recorded on a Child’s Wellbeing Plan (CWP) to ensure impact and effectiveness of support are monitored.

Psychological Services can provide further advice and support for identifiable or more complex needs. Mrs Black and Mrs Livingstone liaise closely with this service and are able to consult with an educational psychologist to ensure the best provision for pupils is in place at Eaglesham Primary School and Nursery Class. Consultation by school staff with an educational psychologist is done through a Joint Support Team (JST) meeting. JST meetings can also include a range of external agency representatives such as Social Work (SW) or Speech and Language Therapy (SALT). When appropriate to do so and in agreement with parents/carers, pupil referrals can be made to psychological services through a JST meeting. Open cases with psychological services are monitored through the JST and Review Meetings with parents ensure all views are heard.

Child Protection At Eaglesham Primary School we take the care, welfare and protection of our children very seriously. We believe all children have the right to feel safe within the school, home and community. “All children and young people have a right to be listened to and to have matters treated in confidence. Involving children and young people and upholding their rights is good practice and builds trust with children, young people and their families. Where there is no risk to a child’s well-being, school staff should respect their right to confidentiality. Where possible consent to share information should be sought from the child and their parent or carer, the exception to this is where there is potential of harm to the child or young person or where the child or young person has already been identified as being at risk through child protection procedures. In such circumstances then the need for consent is overridden and information should be shared with appropriate agencies. Children and young people should be advised that there are no guarantees to confidentiality, where the school assesses them to be at risk.”

East Renfrewshire Council’s Child Protection Guidelines Within our school we strive to provide a safe, secure and nurturing environment for our pupils, which promotes inclusion and achievement. All staff in Education have a statutory and professional responsibility to take action if we have reason to believe a child is suffering, or is at risk of abuse. Our child protection policy and procedure sets out what we will do if we have reason to believe a child is being abused or is at risk of abuse, either within the home or the community. These policies are designed to ensure that children get the help they need when they need it. Every staff member undergoes a minimum of one child protection training activity every session. Many of our staff are more extensively trained in specific areas of child protection to support and identify potential child protection concerns. All schools in East Renfrewshire have comprehensive Pupil Support systems in place and we work closely with our partners in Social Work, Health and the Police. The school operates a multi-agency Joint Support Team to ensure that the best possible supports are available to pupils when they need them. The Child Protection Co-ordinator for the school is the Head Teacher. If you wish any further information or a copy of the school policy, please contact the school office. If you wish to discuss this important matter further, please make an appointment to see the Head Teacher. If you are worried or know of a child who could be at risk of abuse or neglect please speak to the Child protection Coordinator or to a member of staff at one of the following numbers: Barrhead Social Work Office: 0141 577 8300 Clarkston Social Work Office: 0141 577 4000 Strathclyde Police Family Protection Unit: 0141 532 4900 Standby Social Work Out of Hours: 0800 811 505

Security The school building is fitted with a secured entry system. All visitors should press the buzzer at the office at the main entrance, where office staff will admit visitors and direct them appropriately. Parents dropping off or collecting children from school after 9am and 3pm should do so via our main entrance. All visitors to the school should press the buzzer, not let any unknown person in and make sure the door is closed firmly behind them. Equalities Eaglesham Primary School is committed to the educational and social values of sustainability, equality and justice. We seek to support our community through fair, transparent, inclusive and sustainable policies and practices in relation to age, disability, pregnancy and maternity, gender and gender identity, race, religion or belief, and sexual orientation.

We take a values based approach to our work with children, staff, parents and the wider community. We respect all learners’ rights and our work is underpinned by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

The school regularly gathers and reflects upon the views of children, families and community partners in order to continually improve our approaches to promoting equality and equity. We work to remove or minimise all forms of disadvantage suffered by our learners, including economic disadvantage. We value the diversity of the Eaglesham Primary school community and wish for all parents to be involved in the life and work of the school. In accordance with the Equalities Act 2010 we seek to:

Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct that is prohibited by the Act

Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a relevant protected characteristic and those who do not

Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.

Eaglesham Primary School and Nursery Class has clear guidelines and procedures for dealing with incidents of inequality, as advised by the Education Department. We encourage that any concerns be raised with us. Our Equalities Coordinator, Mrs Anderson, can be contacted by emailing or by telephoning the school. Inclusion and Equality An inclusive approach to education involves:

Creating an ethos of achievement for all pupils within a climate of high expectation

Valuing a broad range of talents, abilities and achievements

Promoting success and self–esteem by taking action to remove barriers to learning

Countering conscious and unconscious discrimination that may prevent individuals, or pupils from any particular groups, from thriving in school

Actively promoting understanding and a positive appreciation of the diversity of individuals and groups within society

Anti-Bullying Statement Anti-Bullying Code In our school, everybody is valued. We are all different – that’s what makes us special. The people in this school have the right to be themselves and the responsibility to treat others with respect and tolerance. Silence allows people to suffer. We speak out when we know we should.

Anti-Bullying Policy At Eaglesham Primary School and Nursery Class we have a long standing tradition of encouraging the development of the whole child through cultural, sporting and learning activities which extend beyond the guidelines of the core curriculum. Citizenship, equity, creativity and diversity are promoted. In short, the ethos of the school is caring and inclusive.

Each person has a right to be who and what they are. As such, our school community believes that everyone has the right to participate in an education free from fear and intimidation. Bullying behaviour is not tolerated in Eaglesham Primary School and Nursery Class.

At Eaglesham Primary School and Nursery Class we expect all staff members, pupils, parents and visitors to speak out for the rights of others. There is no silent majority, but rather equality of responsibility.

As part of our Health and Wellbeing curriculum, we use the Bounce Back resource. This resource aims to build resilience and helps to develop the awareness and skills required to manage challenging situations. Work focused directly at anti-bullying is taught at each level.

As part of the Pivotal Education programme, we have developed our new Behaviour Blueprint, which simply and clearly outlines the expectations of all people in the school. Our aim is to further develop the ethos within the school to ensure that all children and young people are treated fairly and respectfully.

If a bullying incident occurs, we will work closely with those who have been impacted. We will support the mental and emotional needs of those involved and help them to understand what has happened as well as the strategies that we are putting in place to support them. We will also work closely with those that act in a way that is not ready, respectful and safe, in order to promote positive choices and help them to understand the effects of their actions. The consequences for bullying behaviour will always be restorative, proportionate and private. Where appropriate, parents/carer will be contacted. Following an incident, class teachers may deliver anti-bullying content to their classes.

Further measures are in place to support the positive ethos of the school: Anti-Bullying and Equality Assemblies; Anti-Bullying and Equality posters displayed around school;, Right Respecting School Award Scheme which provide opportunities for pupils to explore and develop skills in self-confidence, anti-bullying strategies and anti-racist education and visits from community professionals who discuss rights and responsibilities. Where children are believed to be vulnerable, they are identified and supported through additional skills programmes and involvement in mentoring, buddying and committee work by way of positive discrimination. A wide range of extra-curricular activities are in place, ensuring that everyone has an opportunity to be involved in school life. The playground is well monitored with adults and, where possible, Peer Mediators and P1 Buddies, ensuring the safety and happiness of all.

Eaglesham Primary School is participating in UNICEF’s Rights Respecting Schools Award scheme. Through focused teaching and cross-curricular learning, pupils are gaining awareness of UNICEF’s Charter on the Rights of a Child and the responsibilities that come with these. Pupils understand that every child is entitled to these rights and they should aim to respect and protect these rights through responsible behaviour.

All of our actions in relation to bullying follows the guidance from the Scottish Government in 2017.

The Respect for All: national approach to anti-bullying document can be found at:

https://www.gov.scot/publications/respect-national-approach-anti-bullying-scotlands-children-young-people/

Dealing with Bullying Behaviour

Although the way that we respond to bullying incidents depends largely on their nature, below are the steps that we would normally take following an incident, depending on the severity:

1. When a minor incident has occurred it is important that the member of staff speaks briefly and individually to those involved. Where appropriate, all pupils involved may be asked to write down the details of the incident or discuss the details of the incident in greater depth. Serious incidents and repeated incidents should be discussed with the pupils before being recorded by the Senior Leadership Team. Children should be reminded of their rights and responsibilities and those of others.

2. Where incidents have been identified as bullying behaviour, the pupil displaying these behaviours must be warned to stop and told that parents/carers will be informed if he/she repeats these behaviours. Parents of the pupil displaying bullying behaviour and the pupil experiencing bullying behaviour must be informed if the behaviour continues and could lead to exclusive measures being taken.

3. Both sets of parents/carers will be informed. Peer mediation and support for both families in dealing with the bullying incidents may be offered. Confrontation of the problem will at all times be carried out in a positive manner, in keeping with the school’s Behaviour Blueprint.

4. The Senior Leadership Team will monitor the incidents of bullying behaviours and supports implemented. They will record and report details of confirmed and unconfirmed incidents of bullying behaviour to the local authority annually.

Staff, parents and pupils have the responsibility to report any cases of bullying behaviour to a member of school staff.

When all members of our school community work together, bullying behaviour is less likely to happen.

Nursery Information Core Sessions are: Monday to Friday from 9am-3pm Extended Hours are 3 out of 5 days from 8am-6pm Core Blended is 3 days from 9am-3pm in our establishment with the remaining hours allocated in another establishment. Extended Blended is 2 days from 8am-6pm in our establishment with the remaining hours allocated in another establishment. All allocations are coordinated centrally by the Early Learning and Child Care Team. All parents are encouraged to ensure their child attends for their full entitlement of 1140 hours. If a parent plans to drop off later or collect earlier, it is important to discuss this with one of the nursery team. For security reasons the Nursery doors will remain locked for most of the 8am-6pm time frame. Nursery staff will be ‘on the door’ during busy periods, approx. 8.45-9.15am and 2.45-3.15pm. There is a buzzer system that is in operation if you require to drop off or collect your child at any other time. Admissions Policy All Nursery places are allocated by East Renfrewshire Council centrally, in-line with the Council’s policy. Nursery Staff will be happy to advise you how this policy operates when you apply for a place for your child. A leaflet detailing the Council’s Policy is available from ERC. Please also refer to page 29 of this handbook for the full statement from East Renfrewshire Council. Age Range of Children in the Establishment Our children’s age range is from 3 years old to 5 years old. Number of Children at Each Daily Session Currently we can take 56 children each day. When the new building is complete, our maximum capacity will be 120 children each day. Register of Applicants A register of applicants will be kept by East Renfrewshire Council and the information contained in the applications will be considered by the admissions panel to assist in the allocation of places. Please note that the length of time a child’s name has been on the register will not affect the child’s priority for admission. Parents can ask to see their admission form at any time. If circumstances change which affect the application, you should speak to the Head Teacher. Enrolment Procedures When your child starts Nursery, it is important that they are given time to settle into the new environment. We feel it is essential to get this right for each child. Therefore all new 3 year olds will have a ‘settling in period’ that is right for them, coordinated by the Depute Head Teacher and the parent/ carer. There are also a number of enrolment forms which need to be completed once your child has started. Arrival and Collection It is expected that a responsible adult (aged at least 16) will bring a child to and from nursery and staff will not release children to anyone under the age of 16.

Page 15: Eaglesham Primary School & Nursery Class Handbook 2020-2021

15

We ask parents to complete a form each year, providing us with the names and contact numbers of at least 4 people who are authorised to collect your child at the end of a session.

It is vital that you keep staff informed of any changes to your details and amend the collection list if required.

In the interest of your child’s safety, you should make a point of telling the Nursery Staff if your child is to be collected by someone not listed on the collection form. This avoids difficult situations when a child cannot be allowed to leave with an adult who has not been named. If a child is not collected by the end of the session and no-one has informed the nursery of the reason, staff will try to contact the parents. However, if there is no response, the Head Teacher may contact the Social Work Department to arrange care for the uncollected child. Attendance Regular attendance will ensure that your child gains maximum benefit from the Nursery. If your child is going to be absent for any reason, please phone the school on 0141 570 7160, particularly if he/she is ill or has contracted an infection. If your child is going to be on holiday, a letter is required informing the Head Teacher. If there are long periods of absence, the Head Teacher will inform the council’s administration team and the place may be allocated to another child. If you no longer require your Nursery place, please inform us by letter so that the place may be allocated to another child. Cloakroom All children are allocated a peg in our cloakroom. There will be space for their bag and coat with a box below for their outdoor footwear. There will be staff in the cloakroom to ensure children are supported to change in and out of their outdoor/ indoor clothing and footwear. Suitable Clothing Children have most fun when they are doing messy work. We will always try to make sure they wear aprons, but accidents happen, so please dress your child in suitable clothing.

Please bring your child to nursery wearing a waterproof jacket and wellington boots as children will be outside most days in all types of weather

Please provide slip-on or velcro sandshoes for indoor use

No earrings or jewellery items should be worn to nursery

We ask that no football colours be worn to nursery in line with East Renfrewshire Policy

Please provide a complete change of clothes (in your child’s bag) in case of accidents All outer clothing and footwear must be labelled with your child’s name.

Insurance Sometimes children may ask to bring something special or new to Nursery for their friends to see. However, we would discourage this as the Authority has no insurance to cover the loss of personal items. Claims submitted are likely to be met only where the Authority can be shown to have been negligent. Transport Transport is not normally provided for children attending Early Learning and Childcare establishments. However, the Council may provide transport to and from nursery for children with additional support needs who are required to travel some distance to take up their placement.

Page 16: Eaglesham Primary School & Nursery Class Handbook 2020-2021

16

Meals, Snacks and the Promotion of Healthy Eating As all sessions now cover lunch time. Children should bring in a packed lunch bag with food that you know they will eat and drink independently. No NUTS or products containing nuts should be brought to Nursery. Snack will be provided during the day, which will also include a drink of milk or water. Snacks will vary throughout the week and may include fruit, cereal, toast, crackers or yoghurt. Excursions and Consent Form When educational visits are planned for children, the Head Teacher or a member of staff will advise you in advance. You will be asked to complete a consent form which gives permission for your child’s participation. Please note that a child cannot take part in outings unless completed consent forms have been submitted by the parent/ carer. Emergency Contacts Parents whose children are in the Nursery are asked, where possible, to provide the establishment with the names, addresses and telephone numbers of two local contact persons for use in case of an emergency. You are also asked to keep the Nursery up-to-date with changes in this information. It is helpful if we also have an up-to-date mobile number and email address for each parent. If Your Child Becomes Ill If your child becomes ill while at nursery, they will be made comfortable while we try to reach you or your emergency contact. Medication If your child is in need of medication during nursery hours, you should discuss these requirements with the Depute Head Teacher. Prescribed drugs will be given at the discretion of the Head Teacher, and you will need to complete an ‘Administration of Medicine’ form which authorises the staff to administer the medication to your child. No medicine will be given without this form being filled in and signed. The necessary form can be found on the School’s website within the Information section. Minor Accidents or Upsets Minor accidents or upsets in the Nursery will be dealt with sympathetically by staff. Depending on the seriousness of the incident, the parent may be contacted immediately, or informed at the end of the session. Parent/ carers will be asked to sign any accident or incident forms which have been completed during the day. Please keep us informed of any accidents at home, so that we can provide your child with the appropriate support. Visits by Medical Staff It is very important that full details of your child’s medical history are provided when completing enrolment forms. This ensures that the staff are as well prepared as possible for any health emergency that may arise. You will receive a letter informing you of planned visits from any health professionals including dentists. Vision / Hearing Screening The Health Board carry out vision/ hearing screening at various stages of your child’s development. If you, as a parent or carer, do not wish your child to participate, please inform a member of staff. Toileting Children can access our facilities independently and child-friendly signage is displayed to support children in washing their hands correctly. If your child requires support with toileting, please inform your child’s key worker. A change of clothes should be kept in each child’s nursery bag in case of an accident.

17

Digital Photography / Filming We often take photographs/films of our children while playing, performing in shows, engaged in leisure activities or participating in trips or excursions. These photographs are a valuable record of life in nursery and may also be used in display boards around the playroom, in our school handbook or for publicity material and any other educational purposes. Any image/footage can be used through school related social media. You will be asked to sign a permission form to give consent for these actions.

Tooth Brushing To keep your child’s mouth healthy, it is important to follow advice on good diet and eating habits, attend the dentist regularly and encourage a regular routine of good brushing using fluoride toothpaste. Eaglesham Nursery is part of a Scottish Executive tooth brushing programme. This is a fun and educational programme which children enjoy participating in. Each child has their own toothbrush, which is stored under controlled conditions. All children are closely supervised while brushing their teeth by trained staff. You do not have to buy or supply anything. All children attending nursery are encouraged to take part. Breastfeeding Friendly Staff in Eaglesham Nursery have attended Breastfeeding Friendly training and we promote and support breastfeeding. As a Breastfeeding Friendly Nursery we have the following aims and objectives: Aim

To contribute to social and cultural change by promoting an environment where breastfeeding is seen as the normal way to feed infants and young children.

Objectives

To provide appropriate education and training for staff to enable them to promote, protect and support breastfeeding

To support informed choice in relation to infant feeding

As a Breastfeeding Friendly Nursery we support staff returning to work who are breastfeeding as outlined in our Breastfeeding policy and in line with ERC’s policy. The Nursery and the Community We aim to develop links with other nurseries, schools, external agencies and community groups. The Nursery welcomes the opportunity to take part in community events, thus helping the children’s knowledge of the area and the people who live and work in it.

Links with Other Schools The staff will work to establish positive links with other nurseries and local primary schools:

by exchanging visits and information and by maintaining regular contact

by endeavouring to ensure that each child’s education has the continuity which is essential to their learning

School Holidays Up to date Information on holidays can be found on the ERC website or through this link: https://eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk/school-holidays Communication Please see Page 35 for further information on contacting the school. Nursery Fund At Eaglesham Nursery Class we ask parents to contribute to our nursery fund. The money raised from these contributions is used to parties and special celebrations; resources to support child responsive planning; and activities like baking, cooking and gardening. It also pays for any guests and specialists who we may invite in to work with the children and subsidise the cost of any planned excursions. We ask each family to contribute £25 per term (August – December/ January to March/ April –June). This can be paid through ParentPay. Emergency Closure Procedures Information on the procedures for the School and Nursery can be found on page 33 of this handbook. The Nursery Curriculum Our Aims

creating an ethos of mutual trust, respect and co-operation We nurture:

children’s individual dispositions by observing them at work and play

we question and value their responses

through focused, quality interaction with individual children, we establish a detailed profile of the ‘whole child’

We know that children learn by:

seeing/watching/ copying

trying/ making mistakes/ having another go

playing/ playing again/ playing over and over with little changes!

We celebrate our Nursery pupils’ achievements by:

Including achievements in the child’s Learning Journal

Displaying works and photographs

Encouraging the development of new skills

Taking an interest in a child’s interests in and out of school

Showcasing achievement through Twitter We are always delighted when parents let us know about their children achievements and interests out with nursery. Personal achievements such as ‘sleeping through the night’/ ‘trying new foods’ are just as important as ‘riding without stabilisers’ or ‘climbing a hill’. We are happy to celebrate all achievements which support your child’s confidence and belief in themselves. Nursery Policies A range of nursery and school policies can be accessed through the school’s website. Links for Parents Please go to Page 43 of this handbook to see the East Renfrewshire Council Policies and Links for parents. provides opportunities to play alone, in pairs and in small or large groups

supports independence, interdependence, making choices and decisions

is rich and relevant

values and extends children’s ways of thinking, reasoning and understanding

helps children to acquire the tools for thinking, learning and playing, and enables them to become successful learners

is culturally diverse, and reflects the customs, culture and lifestyles of different groups in society

involves parents in the processes of playing and learning. Assessment Learning and teaching is planned ensuring the needs of every child is met. Careful tracking and monitoring takes place to ensure key experiences, skills and knowledge are built upon. Our assessment procedures:

take account of the whole child’s physical, social, emotional and cognitive development

take account of the diversity of young children’s development and previous experiences

are a continuous process, carried out by observing, listening and questioning during the course of the child’s everyday activities

involve all staff, parents and the child

emphasise the child’s own progress, rather than their position in relation to other children.

Supporting Children Eaglesham Nursery Class acknowledges that every child is special and each child will be appropriately supported in accessing the whole curriculum. It is important that all children are given the opportunity to meet their milestones. Extra support is available from staff and outside agencies when necessary. Children with Additional Support Needs Our aim at Eaglesham Nursery Class is to help children with additional support needs (ASN) to enjoy success in their learning. Parents are welcome to contact the school at any time if you wish to discuss this further. Information on the procedures for Additional Support Needs for the School and Nursery can be found on page 8 of this handbook. Parental Partnership Our aims are to foster genuine partnership with parents by:

encouraging involvement in the life of the Nursery Class. Tell us what you think or share your ideas, we really care about your views

offering support – no query is too big or too small

Sharing your talent – if you have a skill that you can share with us, we are more than happy to say yes! (taking account of current COVID restrictions)

providing information – our staff are well-trained and experienced. Please feel free to ask for advice or information to support your family

Working with you

helps us to know your child better

enables us to offer an appropriate curriculum

enables us to support the family when necessary

enables our children to grow Working Together to Encourage Positive Behaviour The nursery promotes positive behaviour. The staff encourage children to consider the needs of others and to develop self-regulation. Staff are friendly, firm and consistent and both model and encourage positive behaviour at all times.

School Information Class Structure In line with the Teachers’ Contract and the statutory requirements the maximum class size in Primary 1 is 25 and Primary 2—Primary 3 is 30 and in Primary 4— Primary 7 it is 33. The maximum number of pupils in any composite class is 25. The Head Teacher will structure classes based on advice given by the education authority. Curriculum and Assessment The Curriculum includes the totality of experiences which are planned for children through their education (Curriculum for Excellence). It includes the four contexts: the ethos and life of the school as a community; curriculum areas and subjects; interdisciplinary learning; opportunities for personal achievement. In general, in enrolling a child at this school a parent accepts that the child will receive the curriculum offered, which meets the national guidelines. This means that, with a very limited exception, pupils cannot be withdrawn from particular subjects/parts of the curriculum or specific activities forming part of the curriculum at the school. The limited exception, when a pupil may be withdrawn by parental request, exist in relation to religious observance and instruction. Formative Assessment Teachers use Assessment is for Learning strategies to assess on a daily basis e.g. Sharing Learning Intention/Success Criteria, Traffic Lights, Self/Peer Assessment, 2 Stars and a Wish, Highlighting, Thumbs Up, Thinking Time, No Hands, Learning Partners, Collaborative Learning, Oral/Written Feedback Summative Assessment Teachers use maths check-ups, spelling assessments, dictation, comprehension passages, extended writing stories, and topic challenges, etc. to ensure that children are making appropriate progress throughout each term. Baseline Assessment/Standardised Tests/Scottish National Standardised Assessments P1 children across the authority take part in a Baseline Assessment in Literacy and Numeracy in early September. Children in P3, 5 and 7 take part in Standardised Testing in Reading and Maths in February each year. These are marked externally, the scores are then standardised and the results are used as a teaching and management tool to ensure that children’s needs are being met. As part of the Scottish Government's National Improvement Framework, all children in P1, P4 and P7 complete online Scottish National Standardised Assessments (SNSAs) which focus on aspects of literacy and numeracy. The SNSA’s aim to provide an additional source of nationally consistent evidence for teachers to use when assessing children's progress. Staff use a range of assessment information to inform their judgements about an individual’s progress and to plan for their next steps in learning. Parents may wish to note that in the event of the school seeking to make major changes to the curriculum on offer, consultation will be carried out with all stakeholders through the Parent Council, Pupil Council and by other appropriate means. Eaglesham Primary offers a broad curriculum built on a solid foundation of numeracy and literacy. We offer the best in current educational practice using guidance from East Renfrewshire Education Department and Education Scotland. We follow the National Curriculum - Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) 3-18. Teachers will be using a skills based approach in all curricular areas. They will develop interdisciplinary approaches to learning which will embrace the four capacities:

Effective Contributors Successful Learners Responsible Citizens Confident Individuals

Page 23: Eaglesham Primary School & Nursery Class Handbook 2020-2021

23

The children will work through the following levels

Level Stage

Early Pre-school years and P1 for some

First P2 – P4 but earlier or later for some

Second P5 – P7 but earlier or later for some

Third & Fourth S1 – S3 but earlier or later for some

Senior Phase S4 – S6 and college or other means of study

Health & Wellbeing, Literacy & English and Numeracy & Mathematics will permeate across the curriculum. In planning to meet pupil needs, teachers ensure the 7 Design Principles (Relevance, Coherence, Breadth, Depth, Challenge and Enjoyment, Personalisation and Choice, Progression) underpin teaching and learning. Teachers also make planned use of outdoor learning and active learning approaches. Curricular Areas Health & Wellbeing Learning in Health and Wellbeing ensures that children develop the knowledge and understanding, skills, capabilities and attributes which they need for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing. In addition, children will be able to:

Make informed decisions in order to improve their mental, emotional and physical wellbeing

Experience challenge and enjoyment

Experience positive aspects of healthy living and activity for themselves

Apply their mental, emotional, social and physical skills to pursue a healthy lifestyle

Make successful transitions from stage to stage

Establish a pattern of health and wellbeing which will be sustained through their life Health and Wellbeing is an integral part of Curriculum for Excellence. Different aspects of Health and Wellbeing are taught throughout the year at every stage. Subjects include Food and Health, Physical Activity and Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood. A new programme for Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood was created and launched in 2010. This was developed by a team of professionals including staff from NHS Glasgow, the East Renfrewshire Health Improvement Team and teachers. All pupils will be involved in the delivery of lessons from this resource.

Parents are invited to a meeting held in school regarding the Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood programme. The Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood programme will be delivered by class teachers.

Literacy & English Learning in Literacy across the curriculum enables children to:

develop and consolidate a range of skills

become increasingly independent in these skills and have the ability to use them across a wide range of contexts in learning and life

gradually decrease levels of support used by the learner and reduce their reliance on use of word lists or writing frames

have the ability to mediate discussions without teacher intervention

develop the ability to read texts of increasing lengths and complexity

Homework This is a two-way communication between parents and school. It enhances the learning and teaching ongoing in the classroom and is given from Monday to Thursday. It should not exceed 20/30 minutes, though duration and content will vary and increase from P1 to P7. Parents are requested to become involved with homework. Google Classroom is used for online homework. The purposes of Curriculum for Excellence include helping children to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors. Curriculum for Excellence encourages the promotion of children’s learning both at school and at home and it encourages their wider learning and achievement. Homework has an important part to play in this. How can Parents help?

Encourage your child to have a homework routine

Choose a time when your child is not tired and avoid distractions

Discuss the task before starting

Page 26: Eaglesham Primary School & Nursery Class Handbook 2020-2021

26

Encourage neat, tidy work (best efforts)

Oral homework is also important (tables, number bonds, sounds)

Check work and encourage your child to self-correct

If there are any questions or concerns about homework, teaching staff can be contacted by phoning or emailing the school office

Our homework leaflet can be viewed on our website. Digital Photography / Filming We often take photographs/films of our children while engaged in their learning opportunities, performing in shows or participating in trips or excursions. These photographs are a valuable record of life in school and may also be used in display boards around the school, in our school handbook, on class blogs and e-portfolios or for publicity material and any other educational purposes. Any image/footage can be used through school related social media. You will be asked to sign a permission form to give consent for these actions.

School Improvement Eaglesham Primary School is proud of its achievements. Our School Improvement Plan and our Standards and Quality Report can be viewed on the school website. https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/er/public/Eaglesham/uploads/sites/82/2020/09/22152921/SIP-2020-21-final-version-with-summary-at-the-end.pdf https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/er/public/Eaglesham/uploads/sites/82/2020/09/23081720/Standards-and-Quality-Report-Parent-Carer-leaflet-session-2019-2020.pdf We have also been recognised as a Rights Respecting School, Sports Scotland Gold award, Eco School, Digital School , Cycle Friendly School, a Health Promoting School and a Dyslexia Friendly School. In addition, we have achieved the Investor in People award, Family Friendly award. We have a variety of pupil groups in the school working towards these and other recognised awards. Uniform Given that there is substantial parental and public approval of uniform, schools in East Renfrewshire encourage the wearing of school uniform. In encouraging the wearing of uniform, account must be taken in any proposals to prevent any direct or indirect discrimination on the grounds of race or gender. Any proposals will be the subject of widespread consultation with parents and pupils. Against this background, it should be noted that it is the policy of the Education Committee not to insist on pupils wearing uniform or having specialist items of clothing as a prerequisite to their attending and engaging in all of the activities of the curriculum. These are forms of dress which are unacceptable in school, such as items of clothing which:

Potentially encourage faction (such as football colours)

Could cause offence (such as anti-religious symbolism or political slogans)

Could cause health and safety difficulties (such as loose fitting clothing, dangling earrings and high heels)

Are made of flammable material in practical classes

Could cause damage to flooring

Carry advertising, particularly for alcohol or tobacco

Could be used to inflict damage on other pupils or be used by others to do so

Children of parents in receipt of income support or family credit may be entitled to monetary grants for footwear and clothing. We are very proud in Eaglesham Primary of our reputation as a health promoting school. All children participate in PE lessons for at least two hours per week. This involves both outdoor and indoor activities. We participate in outdoor PE throughout the year regardless of weather (unless extreme). Your child, therefore, requires both outdoor and indoor PE kit. If your child is wearing a white school shirt, please provide a polo shirt for that day. If children are wearing tights they should have a change of socks in their gym bag (also handy for wet feet!). All items should have your child’s name and class noted inside.

Page 28: Eaglesham Primary School & Nursery Class Handbook 2020-2021

28

As valuable teaching time can be wasted looking for lost and unidentifiable clothing, parents are requested to ensure that all articles of uniform are clearly and indelibly marked. Parents are asked that valuable items and unnecessary expensive items of clothing are not brought to school. Also, parents should note that the Authority does not carry insurance to cover the loss of such items, and any claims submitted are likely to be met only where the authority can be shown to have been negligent. School Policies Links to all our current policies can be found on the school website – https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/er/Eaglesham/information/promoting-positive-behaviour/ Links to Information about ERC policies can be found on page 43. Celebrating Success and Achievements Throughout the year there are opportunities for pupils to share their success and achievements with the school, their families and the wider community. Over and Above postcards home are sent to pupils when a member of staff feels it is appropriate. We have a wall display in school to showcase the pupils who have received an Over and Above Postcard. Success in class is celebrated at our weekly assemblies through the Pupil of the Week presentations. Pupils are encouraged to share their successes and achievements outside of school with their class. We have a wall display outside our school office which showcases the wider achievements of our pupils. We would ask Parents/Carers to support us with celebrating the wider achievements of pupils by emailing us photographs of pupils with certificates, awards etc that they achieve out of school so that we can highlight these achievements within school. Twitter is also used to share the learning and achievements of our pupils with the wider community. Health and Medical Care You will receive a letter informing you of planned visits from any health professionals, including dentists. Medical examinations may take place in P1 and P7, with parents being notified beforehand. Rubella vaccination is offered to all girls in either P7 or S1 and consent forms are issued. The flu vaccine has been introduced across the school and consent forms are issued beforehand. Staff have been introduced to emergency life support through HEARTSTART. Teaching staff have trained as HEARTSTART trainers (February 2015) and will share these skills with pupils. In the event of a child being taken ill at school, every effort is made to contact a parent or, failing that, the emergency contact number. Please ensure that the school has an up-to-date emergency contact number, parental works numbers and doctor’s name.

ALL PARENTS MUST PROVIDE A LOCAL CONTACT FOR SEVERE EMERGENCY PURPOSES If your child has a doctor or dentist’s appointment, please contact the school office or send in a note from a parent. Children going to appointments must be collected from within the school building by an adult. Reducing the Risk of Transmission of Infection Children who have an infectious disease should not attend school or nursery. They should only return after the risk of spreading infection to others has passed.

It should be noted that certain infections, if caught by a pregnant member of staff or parent, can pose a danger to her unborn baby. You are therefore asked to notify the school office if your child has one of the following infections:

German Measles (Rubella)

Chickenpox

Slapped Cheek (Parvovirus)

Page 29: Eaglesham Primary School & Nursery Class Handbook 2020-2021

29

Measles

Shingles Transitions School Admission Arrangements Before a child enrols in Eaglesham Primary School, the Education Department will seek documentary evidence to validate a child’s entitlement to a catchment place at this school. If appropriate evidence is not submitted the Education Department will withdraw the offer of a place. Documentary evidence can be submitted to the Education Department via the school office. Further detail on required documentary evidence and change of circumstances is available in the Education Department’s school admission policy which is accessible on the Council’s website via the web address below: http://www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=19102&p=0 When a child who was enrolled in the school as a catchment pupil ceases to reside within the Eaglesham Primary delineated catchment area and his/her parents wish the child to continue to attend the school the parent must submit a placing request to remain. Where it is found that a child is no longer entitled to a catchment place in Eaglesham Primary since they no longer reside in a property in the delineated catchment area associated with the school, and a placing request to remain has not been submitted and approved, the Council may seek to exclude that child from the school. A child’s parents(s)/carer(s) is/are responsible for providing the Education Department with full and correct information about their child(ren) and any changes to that information which may affect their status as a catchment child. In the event that parent(s)/carer(s) fail to do this, the Education Department will view this as a refusal to comply with the rules and regulations of the school; this lack of cooperation will result in the Council seeking to exclude the child(ren) from Eaglesham Primary School. If information that is submitted is found to be fraudulent the Council may pass the matter to the Procurator Fiscal’s Office. The Council will use all means available to it in order to investigate suspicions or allegations of fraud, including but not limited to, surveillance in cases where it is necessary and proportionate to do so. Transfer to Primary School from Nursery Pupils from Eaglesham Nursery Class can make an application to transfer either to Eaglesham Primary School or St Joseph’s Primary School. There is an induction programme from Eaglesham Nursery Class to both Eaglesham Primary School and St Joseph’s Primary School. Primary 1 Induction We have a very successful induction programme which begins in the spring term. In the past, this has included:

P6 Buddies visiting the nursery to become familiar to our pre-school children.

The nursery staff involve the nursery children in “visits” around the school

Nursery Staff take small groups of children to visit P1 class

P6 buddies visit nursery

Nursery/school staff meet to share children’s progress

Pre-school children and parents are invited to 2 afternoon visits in June: class visit and school lunch

P1 children start full-time in August

P7 buddies assist in P1

Page 30: Eaglesham Primary School & Nursery Class Handbook 2020-2021

30

Although the majority of our P1 children come from our own nursery, we invite children from other establishments to join us. A member of the Management Team will also visit each child in their nursery setting, again, if advice allows. Transfer to Secondary School from Primary School Pupils transfer to secondary school to continue their education at the end of their primary seven-year. Unless there are exceptional circumstances this will be between the ages of 11½ and 12½. Those pupils living within the catchment of Mearns Castle High School will make an application to transfer to Mearns Castle High School. Pupils living outwith the catchment of Mearns Castle High School will be expected to attend their local catchment secondary school. A placing request must be made if you want your son or daughter to attend any school other than your local catchment secondary school.

Parents will be advised of the transfer arrangements in December of the pupil’s primary seven year. A placing request application form will be provided at this time. For more information about placing requests for East Renfrewshire schools you should contact East Renfrewshire Council on 0141 577 3287. Prior to transfer, our pupils will meet Mearns Castle High School staff as part of a 2 day transition visit while following an S1 timetable with all new first year children. Parents are invited to a Mearns Castle High School Parents’ Evening in June. Meals The school has its own kitchen and meals are cooked on the premises. A cafeteria provides a choice of two hot meals or a baked potato, or a cold lunch. A tuck shop with fruit, home baking, crisps and toast is open at morning playtime in the dining-hall. Support for pupils with special dietary requirements will be given. Please contact a member of the Management Team to discuss this further. Hot lunches are provided in our Dining Hall for all P1-P3 pupils as part of the Scottish Government’s free school meals policy. P4-P7 pupils can purchase a hot lunch for £2.10. Since October 2011, in line with other ERC schools, we have implemented a cashless catering service. This service means you won’t need to send your child to school with cash or cheques, you can simply pay online via the school or Council website (please note that there is no admin charge on debit card payments and a 2% admin charge for credit card payments). To make a payment you will need to know your child’s activation code which is issued once your child starts school. This service is part of a wider public service excellence programme aimed at offering more services online. As well as giving you access to services at a time that suits you, it will help to save money. You can also provide a packed lunch for them if they prefer to bring their own lunch. Packed lunches are supervised in the dining hall. Parents are reminded that glass containers are not allowed in school; and as lunch boxes can look very similar; please ensure that they are clearly labelled. Parents are encouraged to supply an ice pack in lunch boxes. Milk is available for all children in P4-7 who wish it, both at morning interval and lunchtime. Eaglesham Primary School is a Health Promoting School, having been assessed according to the criteria in the ‘Here’s Health’ document. As such, the ‘Here’s Health’ logo can be freely displayed on school letterhead. Children of parents receiving Income Support are entitled to a free midday meal. Information and application forms may be obtained from school, area and education offices. Only those children whose parents receive support will be entitled to free milk at lunch time. A new application should be made each session preferably in April, for the following session.

Page 31: Eaglesham Primary School & Nursery Class Handbook 2020-2021

31

Only pupils going home for lunch are permitted out of school grounds during the lunch break and collection arrangements should be made at the school office. Nut Allergy As we have children in school that have a severe allergy to nuts it has been decided that there should be NO NUTS in school. We are aware that many foodstuffs contain traces of nuts and we would ask that you be as vigilant as possible. Please do not give your child anything to bring to school which obviously contains nuts (i.e. Nutella spread). Insurance Sometimes children bring something special or new to school for their friends to see. However, parents should ensure that items are not left at school, particularly as the Authority has no insurance to cover the loss of such personal items. Claims submitted are likely to be met only where the Authority can be shown to have been negligent. Playground Supervision An adult presence is provided in playgrounds at break times in terms of the Schools (Safety and Supervision of Pupils) (Scotland) Regulations 1990. At Eaglesham Primary School, our janitor, Mr Stern, pupil support staff and senior leadership team supervise our playground, both at interval and lunchtime. There is adult supervision provided by the janitor in the school grounds from 8.45am and by SLT/PSAs from 8.45am. In the event of extreme weather, this supervision is moved inside and children are allowed indoors. Please note that children are not allowed into the school until additional supervision is in place at 8.45am. Although staff are on playground duty, our playground covers several large areas and pupils are encouraged to learn independence and self-discipline as they play with their friends in the safe surroundings of the school. In prolonged wet weather, our playing field collects surface water and may be placed out of bounds. When snow, slush or ice is on the ground, decisions are taken in the light of the conditions to ensure the safety of our pupils – e.g. younger pupils may be kept in and snowballing is allowed on the grass, not in the playground. Football may only be played on the class’s Pitch Day in summer. In winter this is allowed in the MUGA, but for safety no full-size or leather footballs are permitted - mini footballs only may be used. Wet Playtimes In severe wet weather, pupils are permitted to remain in class at playtime, with P1 to P6 being monitored by PSAs and P7 class monitors. All pupils are expected to obey the ‘wet weather code’ devised by them, in order to ensure that classes remain both safe and orderly during wet intervals. Parents will be informed of any pupils who misbehave when indoors, as recurring misbehaviour will mean the withdrawal of this privilege. School and Nursery Crossing Patrol The traffic lights crossing outside the main school gates is now in operation. The crossing patroller has been moved to Cheapside Street beside the lane to the school to help children crossing at that point. Please make your children aware of the new arrangements and remind those crossing outside the school gates to only cross with the green man. Transport The Education Authority has a policy of providing free transport to all primary pupils who live more than two miles from their local school by the recognised shortest walking route. This policy is more generous than the law requires. This means that the provision of transport could be revised at any time. Parents who consider that they are eligible should obtain an application form from the school or council offices.

Page 32: Eaglesham Primary School & Nursery Class Handbook 2020-2021

32

These forms should be completed and returned before the end of February for those pupils beginning school in August to enable the appropriate arrangements to be made. Applications may be submitted at any time throughout the year, but may be subject to delay while arrangements are made. Where there are vacant seats on a dedicated school vehicle these can be offered as privileged places to pupils not eligible for free school transport. There is a charge for this and full details and an application form can be obtained from the Education Department Offices, Main Street, Barrhead (0141 577 3258/3279). These places are normally allocated in September once it has been established if there are any seats available. Should there be more applications than places available a ballot will take place. Note: Parents should ensure their child fastens the seatbelt when travelling on school transport. Pick-up Points Where free transport is provided, it may be necessary to walk a certain distance from home to the pick-up point and from the drop-off point to the school in any one direction. This distance will not exceed the authority’s limits. It is a parent’s responsibility to ensure their child behaves in a safe and acceptable manner while boarding, travelling in and alighting from the vehicle. Misbehaviour could result in your child losing the right to free transport. Information regarding these points will be shared with you when a formal agreement is in place. Children are normally transported to and from school to allow arrival before 8.55am and return after 3:00pm. Extra-Curricular Activities Sport: With our grass pitch, multi-use games area (MUGA) and large gym, we are able to offer running, hockey, cycling, cheerleading, racquet sports (badminton, table tennis & tennis), netball, rugby and football to our pupils from P2 upwards. P1, 2 & 3 can join the Mini Athletics Club for fun, games and activity. These activities take place during lunchtimes or after school and may involve parental assistance - please contact us if you can help! We are always interested in new and exciting extracurricular activities and in the past have had an arts & crafts club, volleyball club, book club, debating club, knitting club and a sign language club. Committees Pupils have the opportunity to be involved in various committees and groups within the school - Pupil Council; Class Monitors; Peer Mediators; Playground Buddies; Gardening; Road Safety Officers; Rights Respecting School; Global Citizenship. These groups give pupils the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas and play a part in making positive changes within their school. Pupil Voice At Eaglesham Primary School we believe in the importance of Pupils being able to play an active part in bringing about positive changes to their school. There are regular opportunities for pupils to discuss their learning with their teachers, peers and the Senior Leadership Team. Our various committees also provide opportunities for pupils to discuss and share their ideas about various aspects of school life. Furthermore, our Primary 7 Pupil Council Representatives take part in a pupil forum with the Director of Education twice a year. This allows them to communicate with pupils from schools across the authority.

Rights Respecting School Eaglesham Primary School is a Rights Respecting School and is currently working towards Gold level. Article 42 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) states that all children, young people and adults should know about the Convention. People should think about ways to make sure everyone knows about the Convention, regardless of their age. The Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) recognises the importance of putting the UNCRC at the heart of a school’s planning, policies, practice and ethos. A rights respecting school teaches about children’s rights but also models the importance of rights and respect in all its relationships: between pupils and adults, between adults and between pupils. This belief in mutual respect is also reflected in our Behaviour Blueprint. Psychology of Parenting Programme (POPP) The Psychology of Parenting Programme aims to support families with children aged 2 to 8 years. The programme guides participants to develop strong relationships with their children and help support their development and resilience. More information is available by emailing [email protected].

School Absence An informative telephone call before 9am is appreciated when a pupil is absent. Children returning from absence, short or long, are asked to bring a note from home to explain the absence. In longer absences, parents are asked to keep the school informed and, where appropriate, liaise with a member of the Management Team regarding work for home study. The converse of absence is attendance which is recorded twice a day, morning and afternoon, and the Education Act 1980 Section 30, lays a duty on every parent of a school age child to provide for him/her education suitable to his/her age, aptitude and ability, so any unexplained absences from school will be investigated by an attendance officer. Every effort should be made to avoid family holidays during term time as this disrupts the child’s education and reduces learning time. Parents should inform the school of the dates by letter before going on holiday. Except in exceptional circumstances, holidays during term time would be considered an unauthorised absence. The school does not provide work for holidays during term time. Absence is monitored monthly. Parents of children with high absences will be contacted by the school. Late coming is also monitored and parents will be contacted where late coming is persistent. Information in Emergencies We make every effort to maintain a full educational service, but, on some occasions, circumstances will arise which lead to disruption. School may be affected by severe weather, dislocation of transport, power failure or difficulties of fuel supply. In such cases, we shall do all we can to let you know about the details of closure or re-opening. We shall keep you informed by using letters, e-mails, texts, notices on our school website and announcements in the press and radio. Adverse Weather In the event of bad weather, we will keep parents informed by posting regular updates on ‘Twitter’. These messages can be accessed from your computer or phone. To start following Eaglesham Primary School, sign up and become a member at www.twitter.com. Once a member, search for Eaglesham PS and click ‘follow’. This is a valuable tool for parents and guardians to use to keep in touch with the school during adverse weather. https://mobile.twitter.com/EagleshamPS

Reporting to Parents Eaglesham Primary values the input and support of our parents in their children’s learning. Throughout the year the children build up a portfolio of work and achievements which they share with their parents. Classes will also make presentations to parents about their learning at different times throughout the year. Term 1 – Curriculum Evening (September) & Open Hour (October) Term 2 – Parents’ Meetings (October) Term 3 – Parents’ Meetings (February) Term 4 – Open Hour (May) & Written Report (June) Parent Consultations Two parents’ meetings with pre-arranged appointment times are held in both October and February. Parents are afforded the opportunity to browse through their child’s work and to discuss it and their child’s progress with the class teacher. Parents may contact the school at any time to discuss matters relating to classwork and progress or any other concerns. Parental Information Leaflets Where appropriate, the school creates information leaflets to update and inform parents and carers regarding key aspects of school life. These can be viewed through the school website where information is updated regularly. East Renfrewshire Council have been working to develop a 'parents portal' to transform communications between parents/carers and schools. By using Parentsportal.scot for digital technology, we can reduce paper transactions and the administrative burden on schools. Further developments are planned for Parentsportal in the future. On signing up to parentsportal.scot you'll be able to link to your child and gain access to the services, which are currently available.

Home/School Links A school depends in very many ways on parental help, so home/school links are cultivated positively. Letters, twitter, newsletters, website updates, e-mails and texts on school affairs are issued regularly to parents; a variety of parents’ evenings and social functions take place; and the Head Teacher’s door is always open to parents. Open Days/Evenings – Throughout the school year we have special days when parents/carers are invited in to see their child’s work in progress. Denominational Links Eaglesham Primary School & Nursery Class has links with St Joseph’s Primary School in Clarkston, St Joseph’s Church in Clarkston, Eaglesham Parish Church and St Bridget’s Church in Eaglesham. School and Community Eaglesham is very much a village school with children and grandchildren of former pupils attending. There are strong links with the local community.

There is an annual Harvest Festival in which nursery and Primary 7 children deliver bags of produce to Senior Citizens and the local foodbank.

The Nursery children visit Montgomerie Court to sing their carols.

The school choir entertain our Senior Citizens in Montgomerie Hall.

Of equal importance is the fact that many from within the local community come into school bringing their knowledge and expertise to help the pupils and staff. They speak at Assemblies, help with active learning, keep a watchful eye on the flora within and around the school and accompany the pupils on educational and sporting activities.

School events such as the Christmas Fayre are well supported by the villagers. Local businesses and groups support the school in a variety of ways.

Meetings with Staff If you require to meet with your child’s teacher you can make an appointment with them at a mutually agreeable time by phoning the school office in the first instance. The school understands that your child is your number one priority but all problems are best solved in a calm manner. Comments Any suggestions you feel would improve the service provided by the school are always welcome. Concerns We aim to ensure that any concerns are dealt with in a timely fashion, in a confidential and fair manner. Complaints If you have a complaint or concern with regard to any aspect of your child’s schooling, it would be normal practice to address it through the Head Teacher. Help may be available from the Parent Council for those who require some assistance with funds for trips. Parent Council School Boards were replaced in August 2007 by a new system of Parent Councils. The Scottish Schools (Parental Involvement) Act 2006 makes provision for all parents to be members of the Parent Forum at a school, and to have their views represented to the school, education authority and others, through a representative Parent Council for the school. The legislation supports parental involvement in a much wider sense than before. It aims to help all parents to be:

Involved with their child’s education and learning

Welcomed as active participants in the life of the school

Encouraged to express their views on school education generally and work in partnership with the school

The Parent Council also has a role in the appointment of Head Teachers and Depute Head Teachers. The Parent Council for our school is known as Eaglesham Primary School Parent Council. They can be contacted via email: [email protected]
