JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: EAP Co-ordinator Grade: O Responsible to: Director of Academic & Student Services Job Purpose: To establish and lead the Languages Unit which will deliver English (EAP/ESL) courses to Falmouth University and University of Exeter, Cornwall Campus students and staff across Penryn and Falmouth campuses. This will require establishing levels of service, maintaining collaborative relationships with academic departments and responding to current / future needs. It will involve flexible working hours including some evenings during term time. The EAP Co-ordinator will be responsible for pre-sessional English Language courses and all in- sessional English Language courses (including classes and tutorials). All of these are delivered as part of a shared service for Falmouth University and University of Exeter (Cornwall Campus) staff and students. The primary responsibility is the management of the curriculum and staff for delivery of an effective suite of language courses. These courses form an integral part of the two HE institutions’ activities and reflect the increasing internationalisation of both institutions. The Languages Unit works within Academic & Student Services alongside ASK: Academic Skills, Dyslexia Skills and the Library to support effective study and Academic Writing across the institutions. The EAP Co-ordinator will be expected to work across disciplinary and structural boundaries in Falmouth Exeter Plus, and the Academic Departments/Schools/Colleges within the two institutions. This will involve building relationships with Departments and individual Course teams, with the International Admissions Offices, with Learning Futures (Falmouth University), Education Quality and Enhancement (University of Exeter), INTO (University of Exeter, Streatham campus) and FXU (The Student Union) This post offers an opportunity for innovation in and development of English Language teaching. Main Duties and Responsibilities The main duties and responsibilities are to manage a suite of academic English courses that are founded on a sound pedagogic rationale that is responsive to diverse student needs and informed by current thinking on academic English across the disciplines. Learning and Teaching To lead the academic English in-sessional and pre-sessional courses and to take responsibility for curriculum design and development, including implementation of courses with new methods of delivery and new forms of assessment as appropriate.

  • To lead the development of teaching and academic support for students through the use of a wide range of learning resources and appropriate pedagogic practice. To take lead responsibility for ensuring that students have an effective learning experience advising and supporting other colleagues as needed. To take responsibility for quality assurance and enhancement, playing a leading role in helping colleagues to reflect critically on their own teaching, to identify and adapt good practices and thereby to improve teaching quality. To lead and participate in professional development to support teaching and learning. Leadership To identify, prepare, and lead as appropriate on academic development projects within the Languages Unit and to contribute as appropriate to initiatives within Academic & Student Services and the two HE institutions. To collaborate on work designed to improve the processes, procedures and systems in Academic & Student Services. To undertake external activities designed to raise the profile of the institutions and/or Falmouth Exeter Plus to potential learners, clients and partners. To take responsibility for the development, review and enhancement of relationships with external partners and professional organisations in the UK and/or overseas. To represent the Languages Unit/Academic Services/Falmouth Exeter Plus/ the two partner institutions to external institutions and organisations as appropriate. To take responsibility for devolved staff and resource management including staff development and performance reviews. General duties and responsibilities To maintain a first class level of customer service ensuring that all customers are treated efficiently and in an appropriate manner. To work within the relevant legislation, policies and procedures. To participate in the Annual Performance Development Review Process. To actively support equality and diversity policies of Falmouth Exeter Plus. To attend training courses as identified and agreed for appropriate development. Working within the Health and Safety at Work Act, the postholder has a legal duty to take reasonable care for Health and Safety both for themselves and others who may be affected by their actions.

  • They are also required to undertake Health and Safety training commensurate with the level required by the post and to take part in risk assessment procedures and the implementation of agreed recommended work practices within the area.     Education / Qualifications

    Educated to Degree level Relevant NQF Level 7 language teaching qualification (DELTA, MA, PgDip or equivalent)

    Relevant research, publications and/or conference presentations

    Experience / Knowledge

    Experience in HE of the planning, design and development of language course objectives and material and of assessment. Experience of in-sessional and pre-sessional English language teaching for academic purposes in HE. Experience in co-ordination and timetabling of teaching staff and courses. Experience of delivering staff development programmes and teaching observations. Experience of using a Virtual Learning Environment to support and enhance student learning. Experience of managing budgets. Familiarity with internationally recognised language tests and their equivalencies and with UKBA requirements.

    Experience of designing and delivering online language courses

    Skills / Personal Requirements

    Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills. Strong IT skills (including Microsoft Office suite, shared calendars, Google docs). Proven ability to work proactively and to plan and manage own workload.
