Ear Infections: Detectable Symptoms
Normal
Infected: Redness & Stiffer Ear Drum
Our Detection Approach
• Use optical sensor to detect redness.
• Use acoustic sensor to detect stiffened ear drum.
• Use infrared sensor to measure temperature.
• Use electronics to correlate three different measurements and determine likelihood of infection.
EarCheck works by injecting small jet of air and analyzing response: Only one sensor
Competition: EarCheck checks for ear infections
Competition II: Braun Thermoscan: Thermometer only, not ear infection detector. Probably works with infrared detector.
Our Product
• Approach I:– Combine our new optical technology
– With existing acoustic sensor and ear thermometer
– Perform correlation electronically
– Obtain more accurate reading
• Approach II:– Use optical technology only for a simple non-invasive approach (no
air jet)
– Requires simple photo-diode red-light detector
– Less expensive
• House both approaches in otoscope-like instrument.
