Brazilian Gems from Chief Bill
Page 2
Janet, Connard and I have just returned from three weeks in Brazil and along with PDG Arnie Dowdy his wife, Maria, and Colin and Angela Stephens experienced wonderful Rotary hospitality from our sister district and friends in Brazil. The parts of southern Brazil that we visited reminded me a lot about growing up in Iowa, with a special closeness of family and friends. Parana and Mato Groso do Sul states are the agricultural heartland of the country, and they also contain some of the world’s amazing natural wonders, Iguasu Falls and the Pantanal wetlands. We were fortunate to experience and share in the best of these places and people. Here are some of the gems I learned about Rotary during our visit.
Relationships -- Rotary is all about relationships, and our visit crystalized the relationships that we have been developing over a number of years between Districts 5240 and 4630, as well as between SB Sunrise and other clubs in Maringa and Cianorte. We've worked together on a number of wonderful projects, which we had an opportunity to visit and explore ongoing opportunities. Thanks go to Colin Stephens for nurturing and facilitating this relationship since he was a GSE Team Leader to Brazil in 2003.
Family -- Family is very important to all the Rotarians we were fortunate to visit. They opened their homes to us, fed us well, and showed us the sights. Most rewarding to me were the times around the meal table, sharing family
experiences, culture and future visions. Even the Rotary meetings were family events, with spouses and children attending and sharing.
Branding -- The Rotary emblem was everywhere in Brazil, as Rotarians have done a great job working on projects at the local level and getting the message of Rotary on the forefront. Parks, schools, roundabouts and other public and Quasi-public sites
proudly advertised Rotary's message.
Contacts -- Brazilian Rotarians were so willing to share their contacts to help us have great experiences while we were in Brazil. We wouldn't have had our incredible stay in the Pantanal/Bonito area without a Rotarian putting us in touch with a wonderful guide and tour company. Another Rotarian from Campo Grande put us in touch with a contact in Rio de Janeiro, to help us in the big city.
Youth Exchange -- What a wonderful Rotary program this is. It was truly a magical experience to visit with Savannah Cooley, our YE student in Campo Grande. To see what a difference this program is making in her life, makes me want to shout it's laurels from the housetops.
Friendships -- That's what the purpose of our visit to Brazil was all about and what their subsequent visit next year to Santa Barbara, will be. I'm sure these visits will result in, long and enduring friendships.
It's good to be back home, knowing that SB Sunrise was ably cared for by PP Gary Jensen and PE Joe Weiland. Many thanks for minding the ship in my absence. With a Grateful Heart, President Bill
