Advantages of Early Learning Centers

When children interact with other children in preschool and kindergarten settings, they learn social skills which are critical to developing personality, tolerance, and persistence.

Preschool and kindergarten prepare children to become better readers and form the foundation for success later in life.

Preschool and kindergarten produce significant long-term benefits because they encourage children to initiate their own learning activities, which helps them solve their everyday intellectual, social, and physical problems.

Preschool and kindergarten profoundly affect and improve all facets of a child's life: intellectual development, socioeconomic performance, self-confidence, health, and future earning potential.

Preschool and kindergarten are safe and culturally-sensitive environments where children learn, grow, and achieve the skills needed for a successful life.

Preschool and kindergarten programs strengthen parents' ability to view their children as able, active learners and help parents support their child's intellectual, social, and physical abilities.

A Place to Call Their Own. The Ann Arbor Preschool and Family Center provides preschool students with a comfortable and stimulating introduction to schooling. Classrooms feature child-sized learning spaces, including stepped gathering areas and raised loft platforms. At the heart of the building, a "Family Room" creates a homelike environment and serves as a transition between the outside world and the classroom. Varying color schemes provide each learning community with a distinct identity.

Little Rockets, Shooting Stars. The adaptive reuse of the historic New Haven High School has created a new home for the community's preskindergarten and kindergarten programs. What was once a warehouse and shop area is now a colorful learning environment. Playful imagery and colors explore the school's space exploration theme, especially in the frescoes of astronauts and planets that adorn the halls. In the classrooms, furnishings and casework are scaled to meet the ergonomic needs of young children.

Specialized and Sustainable. The new Abraham Lincoln School of Early Achievement is home to Maple Heights City Schools' prekindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade programs. The stand-alone facility uses appropriately-scaled spaces and lively interior design elements to create an environment ideally suited for younger students. The building is located on the same campus as a new elementary school for grades 2-5, a strategy which allows shared use of parking and athletic fields. In 2012, Lincoln earned LEED Gold certification.

Integrated Learning. Developed as part of a design competition, the concept behind the Park Ridge Kindergarten School focuses on integrated learning. Enhanced flexibility is delivered through mobile learning stations and technology tools. Operable walls between classrooms allow the space to adapt to individualized instruction. Meanwhile, students have access to multiple learning stations within Discovery and Exploration zones. The result is a truly adaptable and holistic approach to kindergarten instruction.

Designed to Grow. Moreland Hills Elementary School offers preschool, kindergarten, and first- and second-grade programs focused on children's individual skill levels. Classrooms have retractable walls, allowing students to work in smaller and larger groups, as appropriate, based on their abilities. The interior supports instructional flexibility with differently-sized spaces and mobile furniture and furnishings. Moreland Hills received four national awards for design excellence.

A Room With a View. The new Austintown Primary School is designed to house 1,039 students in kindergarten through second grade. The building is broken down into small learning communities of 100 students. In the kindergarten learning communities, classrooms have low sill heights, allowing students to look out at the surrounding campus. Flexible furniture and small breakout spaces within each classroom provide opportunities for exploration and individualized learning. When completed, the new school will be LEED Silver certified.
