Early Modern Europe• Beginning in the early 1400’s Early modern Europe was in

a time of changing opinions on religion and innovations in fields such as writing and science.

• The first and probably most important event during Early Modern Europe was the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg.

• This printing press was portable and used movable type. Thus making printing multiple documents quick and easy.

• The invention of the printing press help shape another big event of Early Modern Europe, that being the protestant reformation.

• In 1517 Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to a Church door in Germany. However he also had circulated many printed versions as well.

first step towards religious wars in Europe.• These wars were mostly between the

Protestants and the Catholics.• Examples of religious wars include the

French Wars on Religion fought in France and the Thirty Years War fought in Germany.

• Many more important events occurred during the period of Early Modern Europe, such as Columbus’ Voyage and the Enlightenment.

• These events marked a change in European ideals and would have implication in later times.

• However the period known as Early Modern Europe ended in the late 18th Century when the Industrial Revolution began. Martin

Early Portugal - Cities

• During the period of Early Modern Europe Portugal was one of the bigger powers at the time.

• They had if not the best one of the best navies in the world and were great explorers.

• One city in particular was well known with Portugal and its Navy, that city being Lisbon.

• Nearly all of Portuguese explorations left from Lisbon. Vasco de Gama’s journey to India is a well known exhibition to leave from Lisbon.

Lisbon• Lisbon had its “Golden Age” during the 16th

century.• It was pretty much the trading center of the world,

with trade from Africa, Brazil, India and the far east.• In 1580 Portugal would lose independence to

Spain. However Lisbon would be location of a revolt in 1640 in which Portugal would regain independence.

• Towards the end of the early modern Europe period Lisbon would be devastated by an earthquake.

• On November 1, 1755 the city was 85 percent destroyed and over 30,000 people died.

• A tsunami would result from the Lisbon Earthquake which would go onto destroy more parts of Southern Portugal.

• After the Earthquake the medieval town was demolished and Lisbon was designed to look more of how it looks in modern times.
