Middle Mathematics

Cut and Paste Patterns Worksheet

Colour and cut the pictures to finish making the pattern (see attachment)

Maths Games

Ask someone to help you collect 10 objects. Practise counting your collection, forwards and backwards. You could even try starting from different numbers (for example, start with 5 objects and keep counting).

Mathematics

Counting forwards and backwards from 0-10. You might like to clap each number to keep a rhythm. (go to 20 if they can count forwards and back to 10 without errors)

Maths Games

Number hunt: what numbers can you find in your house? Can you find all the numbers from zero to ten? Try writing these numbers on paper for example the numbers on a remote control or a clock. Can you find numbers on shoes, on food in the cupboard or in the fridge?

Mathematics

Count to 100 song by Jack Hartmann. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTeUqWGCKjA

Maths Games

Practise folding and cutting a piece of paper in half. How do you know the parts are equal? Is there another way you can make half?

Mathematics

Number Writing

Practise writing your numbers 0-10. If you can do all of these with the correct formation and no reversals, try to write your numbers 0-20.

Maths Games

Shape hunt: What shapes can you find in your house? Draw a picture out of these shapes. Describe your picture to a family member and ask them to help you write down the names of the shapes.

Mathematics

Size Sequencing

Colour and cut the pictures and order in size

Maths Games

Collect some buttons, pegs or Lego etc. Make a repeating pattern. Draw your pattern on paper. Describe your pattern to a family member. Can you make another pattern using the same materials? Draw your second pattern.

Visual Processing Instructions

* Ensure students know WHAT we are going to name each colour. e.g. red not orange/ blue not violet before testing begins. Explain to

them that as these names are shorter, their time will be faster.

* Only administer the full test once per day for each student.

* Have student sit opposite you. Explain that they must sit still and demonstrate good posture.

* Explain to the student that they must name the colours in all three rows without stopping.

* They must progress through the test as though they were reading words. e.g. left to right & top to bottom.

* Our brain loves a regular beat so colours should be named in a steady, rhythmic way – like a robot or a computer.

* You will be timing them so they must name colours quickly, but they must also be correct.

* You will repeat the test each day until they can complete it accurately in less than 15 seconds for Y1 – 6 (17 sec Kinder).

* If they name a colour incorrectly they may say the name again and this will not count as an error if it is done before they name the next

colour.

* After testing, always find something to praise each student for.

* Students with very slow times may have a short practice on another page naming single rows only.

* They should be able to complete a single row in 6 seconds before moving on to two or three rows.

Handwriting Overview

* Before handwriting lessons begin, give students the following overview of letter size and orientation several times until

they can verbalise the information.

* The line that the body of most letters sits on is called the base line.

* The first broken line above the base line is called guideline 1.

* The second broken line above the base line is called guideline 2.

* If there are no guidelines, model how to imagine dividing the space between the base lines, in a workbook or handwriting

sheet, into thirds.

* Demonstrate this by stacking three ‘a’s. (Always refer back to letter ‘a’ to describe the size of letters.)

Kindergarten and Year 1

Step 1:

* Use the /a/ script (Page 12) while you model how to form a good /a/.

* Demonstrate incorrect letter formation and get students to tell you what is wrong.

* Teach /a/ to mastery (90% of students can produce correct form and size).

Step 2:

* Use the relevant parts of the /a/ script to teach /g/ and /d/ together in one set of lessons and /o/ and /s/ in the next set.

* Teach students an auditory script to help them remember new letter forms.

Script: /g/ is an /a/ with a monkey tail

/d/ is an /a/ with a tall stick

/s/ starts like an /a/ then curves back on itself

* Demonstrate incorrect letter formation and get students to tell you what is wrong.

* Teach these letters to mastery (90% of students can produce correct form and size).

a 1) Letter /a/ starts just below guideline 1

2) Curve up and to the left touching guideline 1 then down

to touch the base line

3) Curve back up and then straighten to join with

your starting point

5) Trace back down along the same line to touch the base line

NOTE: Letter /a/ should be formed without taking your pencil

off the page.
