Personal TouchesOne unique feature of the remodel was the custom handrail design on the staircase between the dining room and upstairs living room. “Susan had been to France and had seen a railing with this spiral detail and taken a picture of it,” Sam said. “That served as the inspiration to create this design for their railing. It’s a totally unique feature that has a great, personal backstory to it.”

The Final Results“We truly love everything,” Susan said of the transformation and how it effortlessly brings the family together.

“Recently we were all gathered in the kitchen getting everything prepared for our daughter’s graduation party. At that moment, it struck me how easy this new space made it to work and enjoy our time together. It is much more than just a kitchen; it’s a welcoming place for our family to be together.”

When it comes to working with the JBDB team, the Alexanders could not have been happier. “When thinking about JBDB, the word that comes to mind is seamless. The process was seamless from beginning to end and they are fantastic people to work with.”

It’s time for another Remodelers Showcase weekend! We look forward to these every spring and fall–not only because we get to feature some of the hard work our team does, but also because we love getting to meet with homeowners and talking with them about the home remodeling process.

The Fall Parade of Homes Tour is always a great opportunity to meet with and really get to know different design teams in person. Home remodeling is a very relationship-based industry–you’re entrusting your family’s home to someone else. At JBDB, we value that relationship and don’t take it lightly! We are transparent, stick to our word, and our biggest goal is to always make sure that the homeowner is fully happy with the final product.

Stop by our featured home during the Parade of Homes and introduce yourself. We look forward to meeting you and hearing all about the dreams you have for your home!

The result was a spacious master bedroom retreat featuring a cozy sitting area, fireplace, and a welcoming outdoor balcony for the Alexanders to enjoy their morning coffee.

A while later, when a door in their kitchen started to leak, they turned again to the JBDB team. After discussing plans to fix the leak, the Alexanders brought up the possibility of updating the kitchen and living areas at the same time.

“Our kitchen was small and older, but functional. We were excited to work with JBDB again and talk through what was possible for our kitchen design,” said Susan. Soon plans for an expanded kitchen, updated living area, and more open dining room were in the works.

Making ChangesBefore this most recent remodel, the kitchen had builder-grade cabinets, limited storage space, and a very small dining room area. “For Thanksgiving or whenever we would have people over, we were really crunched in there,” Susan said.Updating the main level’s living areas at the same time helped bring the spaces together.

“We wanted the kitchen, dining, and living areas to feel open and calm,” Susan said. “Aesthetically, redoing those spaces made everything feel more cohesive.”

“They have a unique setup, where the living room is upstairs,” said Sam Schmitt, a designer at JBDB. “We wanted an open concept so they could more easily entertain and have a better sight line between the living room, dining room, and kitchen.”

“We relocated windows from the kitchen and installed them in the living room,” Sam said. “Those windows, paired with the open concept, really helped to bring in a lot more natural light.”

In the kitchen, the JBDB team installed custom walnut cabinets and a sleek enameled black island with contrasting light quartz countertops. A narrow reeded glass in the upper cabinets added subtle texture to the design, and beautiful honey brass decorative hardware echoed the brass tones in the kitchen’s plumbing fixtures and lights.

“We spent time together as a family before, but with the new layout and the cohesiveness of the house, it naturally brings the family together even more.”
