1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS

Point Line Plane is about organizing spaces on the ground. Mass is an underground project while Frame and Infill project is talking about how space elevates in a several-story architecture above the ground. They emphasize different aspects but the purpose for all of them is to create interesting space for people to experience. Finally, those three language could be incorporated in one project from underground to above ground.

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE

I have tried two directions in my Point Line Plane project. One is the faceted triangles and another is folding lines. The triangle itself has three inherent sharp points and once they are folded every edge turns into line automatically. This is an innate characteristic of triangle. The shadows also represents the Point Line Plane concept One interesting thing is those triangles can be different sizes and formed by different angles which makes it easy to convert into spaces in various shape so people can explore those places and stand, sit or lean there.

1.3 MASS

I was inspired by several mass projects in architectural field, which all make good use of strong geometry and Metaphysics of light. Mass is always connected with thick concrete material and spiritual space. At first, I just drew randomly, although they are very interesting, I still abandoned them because I was intensively attracted by the power of geometry. The triangle entrance and the pyramid in the central area are my favorite two parts. When people get to the central platform they can choose their routes and in the pyramid, a ray of light is introduced from the top to create a sense of the sacred.

1.2 FRAME & INFILL

To continue my last geometry concept, I chose the regular form in my FRAME & INFILL project based on fundamental geometries, which also makes it easier to create space in both vertical and horizontal directions. Before I put in the infill part, it is obvious that the outline of frame is formed by one triangle and one square. Afterwards, I fill in the frame by using several folded faces in the diagonal direction and the rotation also makes this project interesting.

2.0 HERRING ISLAND. SOMETHING LIKE A PAVILION

Secret of Herring Island is my final project. As for my parts, I think the key words are secret, pavilion and the integration of three previous projects. At the same time I also want to continue the powerful geometry concept and do more research. Another thing needs to be taken into consideration is the functions of spaces because this time, the pavilion architecture needs more types of spaces like exhibition room, recording room and even technical room and toilets, which means this project will be more like an realistic architecture and this time we get our real terrain so the architecture should work well with its surrounding. The site analysis is an essential part from the very beginning. To integrate the three previous projects in one is another difficulty. The three language - underground, on the ground and above ground should be represented in this pavilion atheistically beautiful under some disciplinary.

2.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTACLE

Herring Island is in the central of Yarra River and people have to get there by ship. It is covered with some vegetation, as grass and trees. Herring Island itself has a lot of privacy and not easy to be found that it was an exploited island. When people land on this island they go up from a ramp to get the flatten area space so I try to build a new approach from which people can get the upper place by going through a pavilion.

2.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN

When I think about secrets the first concept came into my mind is craps where can be hidden a lot of privacy so I have tried to explore it through sketches.

2.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

As time goes by, I found it is hard to continue my crack concept in my pavilion’s appearance then I thought of my previous projects. Finally, I decided to put my crack concept and FRAME & INFILL in the interior of the architecture but it appears like my POINT LINE PLANE and Mass projects from the outside.

2.4 FINAL DESIGN DRAWINGS

I researched several ways to sepetate triangles in a beautiful porpotion and I make the inside space like a maze both horizontally and vertivally to hide and explore secrects.

2.5 FINAL DESIGN MODEL

Instead of wasting the angled space, I cut them into pieces of space for exhibition and technical room , which makes the inner space more worthy of exploring. From the outside, the whole appearence looks like to triangles stuck in the land. However, it is hard to understand what this pavalion really looke like, which might motivate people to go inside the architecture. My final design model does not go into too much details but it is still very clear to indicate how my building interact with the surroundings and how it represent the secrets from the outside forms.

3.0 REFLECTION

Through the first project to the Herring island way, I have tried a lot of way to think about the relationship between Earth and Space, also, I learned how to incorporated different architectural language in one project. In this process, I have tried sketches, computer program and photography to present my ideas because I feel the way to present is as important as the way to create. Architecture like a story and the designer needs to explain it and introduce the visitors to come in.
