Natural resources are materials andenergy that come from the naturalworld and are valuable to us.
Natural resources include rocks,
minerals, soil, water, andatmospheric gases.
Natural resources also includedifferent types of energy such as
solar energy, geothermal and thekinetic energy from wind and water.

Inexhaustible Resources Inexhaustible resources are
those materials that cannot
be used up for millions of
years. They are continuousand always available for
human use.
Human activities have no
impact on them.

Inexhaustible Resources
Examples of inexhaustibleresources are solar energy,
tidal forces, ocean currents
and wind energy.

Examples of InexhaustibleResources The energy from the Sun is predicted to
be available for another 5 billion years.
Solar energy gives us light, heat andpowers the wind and ocean currents.
The gravitational pull of the moon
powers the tides and this pull iscontinuous.

Nonrenewable Resources Nonrenewable resources take millions of years
to form. Because of the time it takes to reform
them, they are considered nonrenewable.Once these resources are used up they are
considered gone.
Non-renewable resources are rocks, minerals,
oil and coal. Almost all of the energy that humans use
comes from this type of resource.

Fossil Fuels (non-renewable)
Fossil fuels, oil, coal and naturalgas were formed from buriedprehistoric plants and animalsover millions of years.
These resources can beextended by recycling, using less, and reusing them, but theycannot be replaced.
Example: Oil is used to makegasoline, plastics, fertilizers, andpesticides.

Minerals (non-renewable) Minerals form very slowly. They are
the main component of rocks.
Some products produced fromminerals are glass, iron, aluminum,
copper, gold, silver, diamonds, rubies,
and pigment for paint.

Rocks (non-renewable) Rocks are made from different
types of minerals and form
slowly.
Some materials manufacturedfrom rocks are building
materials, concrete and cement.
Extraction of minerals from rock
through mining also depletes therock reserve on Earth

Renewable Resources Renewable resources can be replaced in
a relatively short period of time.
They reproduce or renew themselves.Water, soil, plants, animals and
components of the air are considered
renewable.

Water(renewable) Water is renewable because it
passes through the water cycle. Precipitation is recycled and brings
water to the soil, oceans, aquifers,
lakes, and streams.
Moving water can be used to create
electricity.

Soil (renewable) Soil is a combination of organic materials and
tiny bits of weathered rock.
Soil takes longer to renew than water, plants,
or animals. New soil can form in a few years from decaying
plant and animal products, bacteria andworms. Humans can speed up soil formation
by composting. Generally, forming soil from decaying organic
matter takes less time than the weathering anderosion of rock material.

Air (renewable)
Air is a combination of atmospheric
gases. Different components of theair are renewable.
The carbon dioxide/oxygen cycle and
the nitrogen cycle renew the gases.

Plants and Animals(renewable) Plants such as grasses,
crops, and trees renew
themselves.
Animals have many usesand are considered
renewable as they
reproduce.
Both plants and animalsneed protection from
extinction.
