Projectile Motion

• Projectile• Any object that moves forward due to its

inertia and accelerates downward due to gravity.

• Projectile Motion• The curved path of a projectile. The

vertical and horizontal components of the motion are independent of each other.

Page 3: Earth Science Room 6-128 Mr. Becker. Projectile Motion Projectile Any object that moves forward due to its inertia and accelerates downward due to gravity

Orbital Motion

• Orbital Motion

• The inertia component in the horizontal direction and gravity component in the vertical direction combine to cause the projectile to move in a continuous curved path.

Exercise

• Draw a sketch that shows the inertia and gravity components with lines at right angles causing the curved path of an object orbiting the Earth.

Newton’s Laws of Motion

• 1. An object at rest remains at rest and an object in motion maintains its velocity unless it experiences an unbalanced force.

• 2. The unbalanced force acting on an object equals the object’s mass times its acceleration. (Force = mass x acceleration)

• 3. For every action force, there is an equal and opposite reaction force.

• G. All objects in the universe attract each other by the force of gravity.

Newton’s Laws of Motion

• 1. A baseball bat snaps backwards after

• hitting a ball.

• 2. A satellite orbits the earth.

• 3. A wagon is still until a child pushes it.

• 4. A bowling ball is harder to move than a

• baseball.

• 5. A leaf falls to the ground.
