Mantle

Page 5: Earth Zones

-The outermost, rigid layer of the Earth.

-100KM thick.

-made of two parts –the crust and the

Rigid upper part of the mantle.

-divided into pieces that are called

TECTONIC PLATEs.

Lisothphere

Page 6: Earth Zones

-250 KM thick.

-Solid, plastic layer made of rock.

-flows very slowly and allows tectonic plates to move across.

Asthenosphere

Page 7: Earth Zones

-2250 KM thick.

--It is the strong, lower part of the mantle between the asthenosphere and the outer core.

-The prefix MESO means MIDDLE.

Mesosphere

Outer Core

Composed of molten metal, it is 1,130 mi thick; the magnetic field is caused by

electric currents circulating inside the outer core.

Inner CoreThe Core : the central part of the earth that lies below the mantle.

• Makes up 33% of Earth’s mass• Radius 3430 KM• Made mostly of iron and smaller

amounts of nickel (heavy minerals)

• Inner Core is Earth’s innermost part and is a primarily solid ball with a radius of about 1228 KM (760mile).

• It is believed to consist primarily of an iron-nickel alloy. And to be approximately the same temperature as the surface of the sun : 5430 C.

Page 12: Earth Zones

The pressure in the Inner Core ranges from about 330 to 360 gigapascal. Iron can be solid at such high temperatures only because its melting temperature increases dramatically at pressures of that magnitude.
