Situation Report: Earthquake Disaster May 8 & 9 , 2015 What we did today? On 8th May, 2015
We lacked relief packs due to the shortage of materials in local market; however we manage to make
100 relief packs. Among them 70 sets were sent to Katunje village approx 30 km from Banepa. But
due to prediction of heavy rain as it was cloudy, the people from the village rang us not to come, in
the rain roads get slippery and muddy, it will be the hard to the the vehicle, there will be high chance
of rolling down so it could not reach the destination and we returned back to Banepa and make plan
to go next day.
Need Assessment Visit to Jyamdi, Kavre
Shree Krishna Dhital, RCC Simalchaur
On 8th may, we went to Jyamdi VDC to see the village
situation and had some interaction with the people
around. The village is totally down with few houses
standing but is in critical stage. People have not received
any relief materials. Many people lost livestock and
foodstuffs.
While on the way, we saw the stream of water flowing
down the hill had 4-5 time more water flowing in them
wondering the people. There were cracks everywhere in
the ground and felt like the ground is sinking below.
Bigger hills have fallen down like the landslide in the rainy
season. The dead bodies of animals and even human were
found to be thrown in the river (I have included one of the
cow/buffalo thrown in the river). People have been
building temporary tent houses in their fields.
I met a woman in the village with her broken arm and I
inquired about the incident. She told, her husband and
villagers saved her life. She was stuck inside her house
when the house fell down. She was cooking curry and
something fell upon her while running and she fell unconscious. Later, after an hour her husband
with some villagers saved her out of the house.
Let’s reach these villages before disaster/epidemic happens. There are about 120 houses in this ward
of Jyamdi VDC. Together we can and together we have to make our country a beautiful place to live.

Relief Material Distribution by Malaysian Ambassador On 8th May, the Ambassador from Malaysia to Nepal, His Excellency Mr. Fadli Adilah has distributed
250 blankets, 200 sacks of rice, 100 sacks of lintel and other materials to earthquake affected people
in Kuttal village of Dhulikhel. The relief material distribution was done by medical team from Kelab
Putera1 Malaysia in coordination with Rotary Club of Dhulikhel and CDRA Nepal.
Katunje Village 9th May, 2015
Katunje village is in a hilly location where we could not take the goods in the big bus (school bus we were using). We had to transfer the load onto a next truck. Although we didn’t see a lot of houses collapsed there was a lot of structural damage to a majority of the
dwellings. Apparently we were the first relief organization to visit this location. We provided the villagers 72 buckets which contained food, and 24 pieces of tarpaulin under the funding of Rotary Club of Taby, Attunda, Sweden through Rotarian Sten Bengstton.

Progress on Low cost housing
Today we are into day-4 building our prototype of a low cost house. We have had many volunteers over the last 4 days including Boys and girls from Kathmandu University, members of Bodhicharya Pariyati Centre and CDRA, Nepal Volunteers. As the design was not fully developed, we had to learn as we go, but the house is developing into something for dwellings of homeless, especially those in remote locations in the mountains, at an affordable cost. We shall keep you informed as the progress continues. Tools for Disaster Victims house rebuild
It has been identified that the tools set is very useful in villages for clearing the debris and to reconstruct the shelter that changed in rubbles by recent earthquake. The tools set along with the zinc corrugated galvanized colored sheets (as above) costs approximately USD 300. Tool set includes more than 33 items. We are planning for 1 tool set for building 5 shelters depending upon the proximity.
