Hallowe’en is a paradoxical holiday. We celebrate the things that scare us. Carica-tures of ghosts, monsters, and witches (!) roam the evening begging for sweet treats. How absurd! Why do we get such pleas-ure from haunted houses and monster mov-ies? We like being scared, for whatever reason, and our fear gives us an exhilarat-ing rush of excitement. Perhaps on some level we are unsure whether that lurching scarecrow on the porch is just a prankster in costume or our own worst fears finally coming to life. For, it is these hidden, sub-

conscious fears that are the scariest, the ones that cripple or paralyze us and keep us from living our lives with joy. And so, I suggest at this Samhain that we look again at our fears and try to find the courage to

become acquainted with, and to celebrate, what really scares us. It may teach us

something.

When I was a child, I was afraid of deep water. This fear did not prevent me from swimming for, from the age of six, I could paddle far out to the floating dock in the lake at my aunt’s camp. No, it was at night as I was falling asleep that I would feel the ominous force pulling me out into deep water, or grabbing my feet as I imag-ined myself swimming. These fearful sen-sations pursued me well into adulthood, and even now I don’t like canoeing at night. Even now I often gasp out loud

when I canoe over a pale boulder that looms under the surface, feeling suddenly attacked on a deep emotional level by the old water monsters of my childhood. The difference between then and now, however, is that now I am not just scared. I am also curious about my fear – curious about what it might have to teach me about my en-

gagement with my life.

I have also always been afraid of the dark. A large dark-cloaked creature follows close behind me even now when I walk in the dark. My recurrent childhood nightmare

involved walking down a long dimly lit hallway and trying to enter a doorway. When I stepped up to the door, the dim light went out, and I awoke as I fell through the steps into a pit of mon-sters. As an adult,

empowering – but I thought Tony would have been freaked out by it. It was after that dream that I began to understand why some people like to go to horror flicks. It gives us per-mission to feel our fear. Engaging with our scary monster instead of running away from it allows us to learn more

about it, and about ourselves.

What I want to happen next in my dreams is to meet the scary creature for coffee and find out who he is. Why is he following me? What does he want? I suspect he is very scared himself. I want to know why. I want to have a little party to celebrate my scary creature because I also suspect he has some important information about what is holding me back from experiencing the joy of my true self. It will take a

lot of courage to be able to sit down with this creature.

I imaging us at a little bistro table, me looking down at the table unable to make eye contact, him looking off to the side unable to speak. I waiver in a voice choked with fear, “Thanks for coming.” I clutch the edge of the table. He rasps in a strangled voice, “Don’t hurt me. I am afraid.”

dogs, I made my way to my unlit back door when my dogs discovered the scary creature hiding in the shrub-bery. I heard a fearful voice say to my dogs, “Don’t

hurt me!”

Now, it is important to know about me that I have never been able to scream in my dreams – I can only rasp out a pathetic squeak. But in this dream, when I realized I had brushed past the creature in the dark, I let out a hearty bellow that woke up both myself and my partner! He exclaimed, “What are you screaming about?” Real-izing I was awake, I laughed out loud! I had learned something about the scary creature – it was afraid of my dogs. Animals represent our instincts and our emotions, our most primordial tools for negotiating the world. I had begun to understand that my terror, my scary crea-ture, somehow represented my fear of being fully pre-sent in my life, and I had finally been able to scream for the first time because I could be present to my fear. I kind of wanted to do some more screaming – it felt so

One sudden movement from me and he will lurch away, flapping his black cloak. “Who are you,” I’ll whisper, “would you like some cake?” I don’t know what will happen next. I am terrified and can barely stay in my seat; but I am also curious. I want to know about this scary creature and what he has to tell me about myself. Rather than running away or trying to destroy it, I want to gather the courage to converse with it. I think we might be able to come to some sort of understanding, and then we can finally reach a point

where we just play at being scared and scary.

Then we can put ghostly white sheets over our heads and go get candy from the neighbors. Happy screaming! Happy

Hallowe’en! Bright Blessings, Marigold

Kitchen Witch: Candied Ap-ples: Food of Scary -Monsters

Starcat's Corner: In Defense of Optimism

The apple is considered to be one of the foods of the dead, and so we sometimes call Samhain the “Feast of Apples.” That makes ap-ples the perfect treat for our scary monsters. Let’s try caramel apples to add that requisite sweetness for Hallowe’en. The fastest

way to make these gooey treats is to buy a bag of cara-mels at the grocery store and follow the recipe on the back! Hey, if your intention is strong, it should work just as well as if you made it from scratch, right? But if you are a perfectionist and want to put even more magical intention into these goodies, here is a recipe to make

caramels. It’s a lot of work, but worth it.

Caramel Sauce for Apples

You will need a candy thermometer for this sauce. Put in

a heavy saucepan

• 1 cup sugar

• 2/3 cup corn syrup

• 1/2 cup light cream Stir with wooden spoon until the sugar dissolves. Boil,

stirring gently, to the soft ball stage (234o).

• Add 1/2 cup light cream Boil as before to 234o.

• Add another 1/2 cup light cream Boil again to 234o.

• Add 1 teaspoon vanilla

If sugary, add more cream and boil again. Remove from heat and cool slightly to thicken. Meanwhile, remove stems from washed apples and thoroughly dry the apples before using them – this helps the sauce to adhere better. Insert wooden popsicle sticks into the stem ends and make sure they are secure. Spread sheets of waxed pa-per on the table. Then dip each apple into the caramel sauce to coat completely, and place on the waxed paper to cool. To entice your scary monsters to make peace

with you, these treats should do the trick!

“The place to improve the world is first in one’s own heart and head and hands, and then work outward from there.” – Robert M. Pirsig

From time to time, I hear (or read) Pagans talking about “fluffy bunny witches,” those who they feel are shallow in their practice of magick, usually because of optimistic comments, made by the witch in question, about a serious or troubling topic. If Pagans make comments about how “it’s all about love, really” or “we should forgive our ene-mies” or the like, some assume that they aren’t willing or

able to deal with the darker aspects of the universe.

As an optimist who has endured some serious chal-lenges and trouble over the past cou-ple of years, and has emerged stronger and still filled with hope, I’d like to offer some comments

on this phenomenon. I’m not saying that everyone who calls him- or herself a Pagan is fully committed to the hard work of self-growth. There will always be “wanna be” Pa-gans who think it’s cool to be a witch, and beginners who are just stepping onto the path. But there are those of us who consistently focus on the positive, while still actively

doing the spiritual work that we are called to do.

It’s a basic tenet of magick that a clear focus on the intent is what will help our spells succeed. Even in mainstream cul-ture, “the power of positive thinking” is known to enhance health and reduce emotional stress. In a frightening or up-setting situation, whether personal or global, it’s even more

important to maintain a focus on your goals and values.

The “War on Terrorism” is one example. No matter your political persuasion, it’s easy to be drawn into worry and fear about when and where “they” will strike next. Yet if we allow ourselves to dwell in that fear, the energy we have for other projects is dissipated. Isn’t it more productive in the long run to work for the change that we feel will make the world ultimately safer? It could be helping to eliminate world hunger and disease, or providing support to the U.S.

Green Witch: A Potpourri for Courage

To make a courage medicine bag, pick and crumble the dry leaves and flowers of thyme, yarrow, and colum-bine. Dig, slice thin, and dry ragweed root. Combine in a small bag of red cloth stitched up with red thread. If you wish, sew some amethyst or turquoise beads on the bag for added courage. Hang the bag around your neck with a red cord, carry it in your pocket, or place it

on your altar.

Be of brave heart!

Marigold

If you are preparing to “take tea” with your scary mon-sters this Samhain, here is an herbal mixture specifically designed to calm your fears and feed your courage. Note that it does not contain herbs for exorcism since the intention is for you to get to know your scary crea-

tures and learn from them rather than drive them away.

If you have not yet put your garden to bed, you may still be able to find some of these herbs. Thyme, that won-derful work horse in a Green Witch’s stable gives cour-age and energy when carried and smelled. Columbine is useful for inducing courage and daring. You can rub the stems, leaves, and whatever is left of the flowers on your hands, or carry it with you. Yarrow, whether cultivated or wild, stops fear and grants courage when carried. Farther afield, ragweed drives away fear. Dig up its root

and chew it at night.

A Debt To Kwan Yin I owe Kwan Yin. I owe her big time. You see, I have a son, Adam, who is addicted to dangerous situations. Every gray hair I have can be directly traced to one of his off-the-

wall escapades. He has never been a boring kid.

About 6 years ago, when Adam was living in the south-western Thai city of Ranong, he and his friend, Uve, hatched a plan that would even give Kwan Yin gray hair. Uve, from Alaska, had been a close friend of Adam’s back at the San Francisco Art Institute, so was staying with Adam for a few months in Thailand. The sum of Uve and

Adam together were always more than one plus one.

They decided to go to sea in a small plastic boat, pulling in at various islands to replenish water and food whenever they needed to. That part of the Andaman Sea is rife with little islands, so it seemed a reasonable plan to them. What they didn’t know was that many of those islands had been used as bomb test sites by the Burmese Navy and were positively zinging with radiation. The Navy had put up big signs warning off people from landing, but the signs were

all in Burmese. I’m getting ahead of myself.

Adam and Uve stocked up on a few dozen bottles of wa-ter and some food, bought the little plastic rowboat, and set out to sea with spirits high. In a few days, with water and food were running low, they attempted to land on one of the islands. They saw the sign, but who reads Burmese? Then they heard the booming voice addressing them in

Burmese. What, God speaks Burmese now? Wow.

Actually, the voice was coming from a Burmese Navy ship, and if they couldn’t understand all the words, the mes-sage came through clearly in tone: “Get off that island! It isn’t safe. It isn’t legal.” They paddled away. Each island they came to either had warning signs, a Navy ship guard-ing it, or was just a piece of rock with no water, nothing edible. They were beginning to get worried. Plus, who thought to bring sunscreen? And their sunburns were get-

ting really bad.

At this time, my husband and I were in Honolulu, visiting the Bishop Museum there. I had been having the ever-growing and familiar feeling all week that something bad was happening to Adam. As I strolled through the quiet exhibit rooms, I came around a glass case and was con-fronted by the most exquisitely-carved ivory statue of a woman. She was about two feet high and her card said she was Kwan Yin, the Chinese Goddess of Mercy. She had the most compassionate face I had ever encountered on an

military troops, or whatever seems right to you. A posi-tive outlook, grounded in actions taken to create the change you feel is needed, is far more effective than con-

stant worrying.

As the saying goes, “be the change you wish to create.” Many Pagans do activist work for peace and justice. Yet many activists and protestors are chronically stressed out and angry, burnt out from not practicing self-care as they pursue this calling. Granted, there are many things going on in the world that are destructive and cruel. But if you feed into that negative energy, you’re adding to it, rather

than creating a true change.

I fully believe that focusing on the positive does more for the greater whole. The energy that we put out into the web of life will resonate in the lives of others, affecting them in surprising and positive ways, and as that effect spreads, we begin to see it in our culture’s worldview. As astrologer and author Rob Brezsny notes, “Today the conventional wisdom is that everything is falling apart, that the world is a terrible place to live, that bad things predominate. The most taboo possibility of all is the idea that the world is full of beauty and that life is on our

side.”

This doesn’t mean putting on a false front of “everything will be just fine.” It does, at times, take a focused effort to find your center and look to the hopeful side of a diffi-cult situation. But as long as you keep listening to your soul, your intuition, and your calling, and follow through with the necessary work, the Goddess won’t steer you wrong. And when you hear other Pagans express hope and love under difficult circumstances, rather than as-sume their outlook is shallow, take a moment to appreci-ate the “fluffy bunny effect.” It might just brighten your

day when you need it the most.

inanimate object. I was brought to tears just looking into her eyes. I said to her, “Kwan Yin, please help my Adam, keep him safe. Something is happening to him. I can feel it as a mother. Perhaps you are a mother, too.” I felt her acknowledge my plea. Then the concentration was broken

and I went on.

About a week later, back at home in Maine, I received a phone call from Adam, telling me he was all right, but that he and Uve had had a harrowing experience. What had started out as high adventure nearly ended up costing both their lives. While drifting around the Andaman Sea, now without any food or water, sun burnt, dehydrated, weak

from lack of food, they had been robbed by a boatload of Sea Pirates. (These peo-ple roam the sea, preying on small boats.) The pirates took their oars, most of their clothes, watches, just

about everything. They were going to kill them and take their boat, but they had no room on their boat for the little boat, so merely set them adrift. They drifted for days, the boys too weak to row even if they had oars. Finally, a fish-ing boat of Sea Gypsies (honest, these people also exist) found them, pulled them aboard, put them on the iced-down fish to ease their sunburns, gave them water and food, and took them to an island resort run by a man to whom they often sold fish. This man housed the boys in one of the cot-tages, ministered to their sunburns, fed them, and basically brought them back to life before taking them back to the

mainland.

As near as Adam and I could figure, the day I was in the Bishop Museum talking to Kwan Yin was the day they were

picked up by the Sea Gypsies.

Like I said, I owe Kwan Yin. I owe her big time.

Court Watch (A Real Reason to Fear?) It seems like the majority of this issue addresses ways to deal with fear. Fear can be all blinding, but it can also alert you to upcoming dangers if you don’t let it rule you. It is not always easy to determine whether foreseen dangers represent a real concern or an imaginary one. It is my hope that my concerns over our present government represent only imaginary dangers, but I fear they may be real. What

do YOU think?

Since the last issue of this newsletter went to press, John Roberts has been confirmed as the new Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. This has thrilled far-right leaders like Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Pat Buchanan and Maine’s Michael Heath. Although Chief Justice Rehnquist had also been a conservative, Robert’s appointment has given the court it’s third justice at the far-right of the po-

litical spectrum.

President Bush has since nominated his close friend and

human and civil rights; including even the right to know the reason for which he is being imprisoned.

• The newest version of the “Patriot Act” would allow law enforcement to carry out searches without any judi-cial oversight.

• In early October, the Senate Intelligence Committee approved legislation that allows Pentagon Intelligence operatives to collect information from US citizens without revealing their status as government spies.

• Bush now seeks the power to deploy troops within the country at his own discretion and without any legal re-strictions.

• Pursuant to Executive Orders 11000 thru 11004, Presi-dent Bush could: 1. Draft all citizens into work forces under government supervision.

2. Empower the postmaster to register all men, women

legal advisor, Harriet Miers, to fill moderate Sandra Day O’Connor’s seat on the court. Miers has no experience as a judge or arguing cases before the Supreme Court. The Radi-cal Right was worried about her until the Bush administra-tion privately assured them that she is an Evangelical

Christian.

Whether she would tilt the court back toward the dark ages or not, she is undeniably one of President Bush’s closest confidants. Meirs gushes with praise and admira-tion for Bush and his “brilliance”. Both Miers and Bush feel that if, on the bench, Miers ruled contrary to Bush’s wishes, they would each perceive it as a “...deep personal

betrayal...”.

Reasons we should be concerned about a Supreme Court that is heavily tilted to the right and/or include Bush’s

personal friends include:

• In June Bush issued an executive order that created the National Security Service (NSS); a branch of the FBI that now works entirely under his authority and is ac-countable only to him. (His own Gestapo?)

• In September, the 4th Circuit Court ruled that the presi-dent had the power to declare any American citizen an "enemy combatant" and summarily rescind all of his

and children. 3.Seize all airports and pri-vate and commercial air-craft.

4. Seize all housing and estab-lish forced relocation of citi-zens.

• In December of 2004, Bush authorized preliminary stud-ies for the rapid construc-tion of a National Detention Center Program-controlled

series of detention centers, to be added to the existing 600 units now in place. Each unit can hold 20,000 to two million people. (See http://tbrnews.org/Archives/a1280.htm and FM 3-19.40 (19-40). Military Police

Internment/Resettlement Operations. 1 August 2001)

• Bush has threatened to veto a bill that would limit the "cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of prisoners". The President's action implies that he has the right to torture and abuse according to his own judgment, a clear violation of the Geneva Conventions, the 1996

Treaty on Torture and the 8th amendment.

The issues raised above are only the tip of the Bush ice-berg. With this type of person as president, the last thing we need is either another right-wing zealot or a presiden-tial “yes-man (or woman)” on the Supreme Court. I be-lieve that our freedoms and civil liberties are at stake. If we do not stand up and resist soon, before long, it may be

too late. Fred Griffith

Calendar of Events NOTE: If you'd like your event included in our calendar of events, please send us an e-mail, with Calendar Listings as the subject, to [email protected] before the deadline for the issue in which you'd like it listed. Each issue of the newslet-

ter lists the next deadline on the front page.

If you would like an extra copy of this calendar to post on a public bulletin board, please feel free to photocopy it freely. If you know a business in your area which would like to post one, please send the information to the above e-

mail address and we'll add it to the mailing list.

As a service to the Pagan community, we seek to list as many events as possible that would be of interest to Maine Pagans. You need not be a member of EPN, or even a subscriber to this newsletter, to list an event here. All we ask is that events be non-profit -- that is, that any fees for participating not exceed the reasonable cost of putting on the event -- and submitted to us by e-mail or post by the publication deadline. (Those planning for-profit events are welcome to

avail themselves of our very affordable advertising opportunities.)

We make no claim as to the value or safety of any of these events, and caution our readers to rely on their own best judgment when assessing any situation, particularly those involving strangers. That said, we also encourage you to participate in as wide a spectrum of the Pagan community as you can, both for your own enjoyment and because our

community needs your positive energy and good fellowship.

Networking The people and groups listed here are mentioned because they have done two things: They have volunteered to serve as points of contact for those seeking Pagan community, and they have agreed to follow a set of basic rules of ethical conduct. Any person or group may be listed here by subscribing to this newsletter and agreeing to those expectations; please contact EPN to arrange such a

listing.

EPN has no interest in serving as the "Pagan police," and explicitly supports the autonomy of each person and group in matters of faith, belief and worship. The Maine Pagan community encompasses a wide variety of people and practices, and seekers are cau-

tioned that any person or activity that makes you uncomfortable is probably wrong for you.

Groups and individuals who seek networking opportunities but are reluctant to sign the Standards are encouraged to take advan-

tage of our advertising columns.
