• We will be covering each workshop at least 4 times during EASA.

• If there is something special going on in your workshop, TELL US! You can email, tweet or just drop in to our offices in the Bar area.

SEaSTAIN

Have you ever heard of the adventures of Tom Sawyer? Any now you can experience the wisdom of this smart boy here in Cádiz. Many participants are enjoy-ing themselves while they are painting the huge container, while others are resting in shade, bored to death. The concept behind this large metal room is a water and en-ergy sustainable object. For now their favourite colour is baby blue, symbolizing good will and hard work.

EASA Kitchen

There is no need as primary as food. Strolling around the food market in Cádiz we›re on the hunt for products that have been brought into the city from all over the region and beyond. The market exposes the intrin-sic relationship of the city with the surrounding land and the sea. EASA kitchen will scurrage Cádiz›s markets and bring se-lections of it to EASA. But it›s a workshop without pretence and simply will construct from the finest base ingredients, food for EASA. In doing so it might turn out to be the most direct in relating both to the city and all of us EASA participants.

SUPER-PERCEPTION

Try seeing the world with your mind, and not with your geni-tals. It’s all about understand-ing the main characteristics of people around you throughout the personalized masks and gestures. Everybody has them, you just have to notice them. The trip to unknown. They are actually preparing for a “blind walk” throughout the old city with their own hand made masks, so they could percept with other body parts (ears, hands, noses…). This is a must see event.

CLOUD

Who makes the clouds? Finally we have the answer. It’s the blond people. All the participants are blonde in some way (physi-cally, mentally…). They all have a taste for light materials and floating objects. The workshop started out with a philosophy talk, but they will be pumping up UFOs in no time. All the flying objects are helium based, anchored by ropes.

• Our Culture Vulture will be bring you reviews and tips of the best attractions in Cádiz for when you need a morning away from your workshop.

Cadizign

How do you understand the urban character of Cadiz? After a short presentation of the participants Natalja Dozdeva went through the first week. The plan is first to understand Cadiz from an urban planning perspective. Natalja told me the inspiration for this workshop was the survey technique used in book ´The end-less city´ and that the background idea was to combine architec-ture with graphic design. Where will this workshop lead? See their pecha kucha presenta-tion next thuseday.

T h i n g s to do in Cadiz…The Torre Tavira Camera Obscura

The Torre Tavira is a watch tower, built in the eighteenth century and is the highest point of the old city. It currently houses a walk-in Camera Obscura whereby light enters the room via a periscope in the ceiling and an image of the Cádiz skyline is reflected onto a large dish shaped table. A guided tour is available and costs just 4 euro.

We say: check it out!

WILDLIFE

The guys from Wildlife after a huge brainstorm in EASAbar decided they will go for a coffee to the city square to do some more brainstorming and actually figure out how they are going to write the biggest encyclopedia about this strange species.

After all they actually started to follow some poor German tourists with a plan to research their behaviors… We hope that the results will be interesting and that no German tourist will be harmed. And also that no participant will end up on the police station explaining why he or she was measuring the distance from some tourist white sox to the nearest ice cream…

• Check yourself for additional body parts• Learn about coffees of the world

We all have our coffee rituals at home and when abroad. It is best to adapt swiftly to the local coffee culture to avoid frustration. I met up with Marten Dashorst. An EASA veteran, he knows the value of quickly finding a temporary new favourite coffee. In Cádiz Marten chooses a cafe Cortado which he pre-fers to drink while smoking a cigarette. ‘Coffee and caffeine is a heavenly combination’. A Cortado may differ from place to place, but must never be confused with a cafe Macchi-ato. Martin is inclined to say that a good Cortado is served in a transparent glass. ‘It’s basically a ‘solo’ with a little bit of milk.’ The glass shows the subtle colour changes from, what Martin describes as a

SUN, SEA, SAND AND THIRD NIPPLES

A CAFE CORTADO CON CIGARETTE

With this summers EASA being set in scorching sun by the beach many of us will be tempted to get into our bikini and hit the beach. This sud-den rash of visible flesh has resulted in a lot of red patches, but also making an appearance is 3rd nipples. These creatures of myth have been making a popular comeback recently with celebrities such as Mark Wahlberg, Lily Allen and even Zac Efron is rumoured to have a spare set. So here are the facts:Apparently 1 in 50 women and 1 in 100 men are supposed to have a third nipple, so with around 400 people here, lets say 200 girls and 200 guys, that means there are probably 4 girls with a 3rd nipple and 2 guys. Most of the time a third nip-ple will look like a small to me-dium freckle maybe with some hairs around the edge and will be located on the torso area. So get hunting. Umbrella has already been hot on the trail and has lo-cated the following 3rd nipple on Avanzada! Tutor Garrah Breathneach (IE). Ask him nicely and he might show it to you.

'super black' to 'a bit of white' on top. In between there are lots of shades of brown, that make for a nice gradient. When asked if he uses sugar, he states to never put sugar in his coffee. The only exception being when he drinks a cappuccino and puts sugar on top of the cream. ‘Then I can spoon it out after-wards’. Marten recommends the small cafe across the EASA site for a nice Cortado and you can regularly find him there enjoying one while smoking a cigarette. For an exhaustive overview of the history of the Cortado and why it is not the same as a Macchiat o, I rec-ommend http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cortado

MORE THINGS TO DO...Yes, we`re in Cádiz, and yes, so close to the sea, but if you`re feeling hot and don't feel like getting sand all over Campo del Sur, you might want to head out, just 3 doors down to CASA DE IBEROAMERICA, hosting 2 FREE exhibitions. And above all, the space is air-conditioned

TALLER DE EMPLEO COL-LECCION displays to scale, fine clothing from different profes-sions of the 180o's, for both men and women, as well as accesso-ries common for those periods.

It is vital that we maintain a good relationship with the city council and this means that we must behave when outside of the easa hq. Thus we are un-der no circumstances to drink or smoke outside the main en-trance ever. This also means wearing your clothes when coming and going from the beach or showers to the easa hq. Just think that the whole city of Cadiz is not a beach.

Be nice to our neighbour. We have a person living in the building, top floor of the cen-tral staircase. We have a good relationship with him and he is very relaxed. Anyway try to be quiet around the info point at night. Obviously this also means no playing music at the info point at night.

ORGAN-ISERS SAY….

EL PARASOL26 Tuesday JULY

So, we are already on our fourth day of EASA011 in Cadiz. Great to see all new fac-es! Hopefully you found your way around in the workshop fair late last night and today started to get a grip of how you are going to spend your two weeks here. Still, there is a lot going on in EASA. To clear out what is here is the first part of EASA dictionary.

EASA [iːˈɛːsa] noun (European Architecture Stu-dents Assembly) This is where you are now. To add some con-fusion, you can call this event the EASA Summer Assembly (although that would be Eu-ropean Architecture Student Assembly Summer Assembly which is really weird). Accord-ing to the website easa011.es we are “some 400 of the brightest architecture students from all over Europe”. I can assure you we will see proof of not so very bright behaviour as well. So no worries.

EASA spirit [ˈiːɛːsa ˈspɪrɪt] noun “Easy to feel, difficult to de-fine.” Describing the open at-mosphere of EASA. Easy to get to know people, easy to have a good time. An EASA cliché, but true all the same and we love it!

organizer [ˈɔːg(ə)nʌɪzə] noun Person that by some reason

choose to spend two years of his/her life to , without pay, make this event come true. Worthy of all respect.

tutor [ˈtjuːtə] noun A popular occupation. Out of more then 120 proposals, 27 was chosen. So expect much from your tutors!

NC [ˈ(ə)nsiː] noun (National Contact) The NC’s pick their participants, so if anyone are stupid, blame their NC. New for this year are the two International NC’s, taking care of our guests from over-seas.

helper [ˈhɛlpə(r)] noun Typically an “oldie” that just can’t stop coming to EASA. Knows the answers to all ques-tions at the info point, and rule behind the bar.

participant [pɑːˈtɪsɪp(ə)nt] noun All the rest. But it is for you all the hard work is for!

To be continued….

• What is the relevance of architecture in the 21st century? Efficiency, productivity, and functionality seem to have be-come established as basic social maxims. Global phenomena such as migration, climate change, and economic instability require new approaches and solutions.

often exceed the value of the property. On the other hand Spain's government forecast the unemployment rate would rise to 20% in 2009. In fact 50 % of 18-26 year old Spanish are unemployed. We might enjoy hanging out at the beach and living the Span-ish life, but for lots of young People in Spain, this is pretty much reality that not only has a positive side, unless you are on vacation. Also Architects are more and more replaced by building companies, losing more and more influence during the de-sign process. This is not only happening in Spain, this is an European issue. How can we keep our profession alive? Is it more and more becoming lux-urious to hire an architect or would you rather put together your house on IKEA-Home-page?

YOUNG, UNEM-PLOYED, BUT SEXY :

The Architect of Tomorrow The economy of Spain is the twelfth-largest economy in the world, based on nominal GDP comparisons, and the fifth-largest in Europe. It is re-garded as the worlds 15th most developed country. Until 2008 the economy of Spain had been regarded as one of the most dy-namic within the EU, attracting significant amounts of foreign investment. Spain's economy had been credited with having avoided the virtual zero growth rate of some of its largest part-ners in the EU. In fact, the country's economy had created more than half of all the new jobs in the Euro-pean Union over the five years ending 2005, a process that is rapidly being reversed. More recently, the Spanish economy had benefited great-ly from the global real estate boom, with construction repre-senting an astonishing 16% of GDP and 12% of employment in its final year. Spain had been on course to overtake countries like Germany in per capita in-come by 2011. However, the downside of the now defunct real estate boom was a corre-sponding rise in the levels of personal debt; as prospective homeowners had struggled to meet asking prices, the average level of household debt tripled in less than a decade. This placed especially great pressure upon lower to middle income groups; by 2005 the median ratio of indebtedness to income had grown to 125%, due primarily to expensive boom time mortgages that now
