1Route Info!ationThe East Coast Main Line was created when a numer of smaller com!anies comined theirlines. "arious mergers and ac#uisitions in the early days of the railway meant that y 1$%&only three com!anies controlled the route 'orth to South( the 'orth )ritish *ailway+ 'orth

Eastern *ailways and the ,reat 'orthern *ailway.

'orth Eastern *ailways o!erated the northern ti! and had its head#uarters in -or. This!restigious station eventually ecame the head#uarters for the entire East Coast Mainline. The !resent station /although greatly e0!anded over the years was o!ened on une 2th1$. The entire trac com!le0 into and out of -or Station was controlled y a 25 leversignal o0+ the largest manually wored signal o0 in )ritain.

'ewcastle station was constructed in collaoration with *oert Ste!henson and o!ened in1$&. This uilding has a classical styled frontage and its train shed features threedistinctive arched s!ans 6 one of the first of this ind in the world

The East Coast Mainline has always had a re!utation for s!eed and even oasts the locationof the current world s!eed record for a steam !owered locomotive 7 set on 3 rd uly 153$ atStoe )an+ not far south of ,rantham.

Throughout its history the line has featured several ings of s!eed+ and even now the8ntercity 22 sets thunder u! and down its rails.

!"ain Simlato" 213features the route as it was in the mid 15&s. 9uring this !eriod+ theline reached its highest freight traffic volume+ mainly due to neary coal reserves and the'orth:s aundance of industrial and manufacturing ased commerce. ;lso fondlyrememered from this era is the Class 9eltic 'a!ier Locomotive+ regarded y many asthe greatest diesel engine to grace )ritish railways.
