E AST M IDDLE N EWS NOVEMBER 2-6, 2015 Be Proactive As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter Warren East Middle School is a PBIS School, which stands for Positive Behavior Intervention Supports. As a PBIS school we strive to have consistent expectations and procedures. I have included below a copy of the WEMS electronic device policy: ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY Electronic devices and other non-instructional materials, including but not limited to cell phones, gaming devices, iPods, and laser pointers, may not be used during instruction unless students have received permission from a teacher. Any and all such items must be left in student’s lockers and silenced during the school day unless they have received permission from the teacher. Students should place any such items in their lockers at the earliest opportunity, normally upon dismissal from the gym before first period, and must remain there until the end of the day or until they have received permission from a classroom teacher. If the classroom teacher has given permission to use electronic devices, the teacher’s classroom expectations must still be met (ie. Leaving them face down, use of headphones required, or only used for Infinite Campus during class). If these rules are not met, the device can be taken from the student and turned into an administrator If this policy is violated, including another student using your device, the item will be taken from the student and turned in to an administrator. The following consequences will take place: 1st offense of having any unauthorized electronic device: Student warned. Item returned to parent. 2nd offense of having any unauthorized electronic device: Parent/guardian will be able to pick up the item after one day. 3rd offense of having any unauthorized electronic device: Parent/guardian will be able to pick up the item after a conference with an administrator. Further violations will result in more serious consequences. WEMS Administration reserves the right to take specific circumstances into consideration when assigning consequences for possession and/or use of unauthorized electronic devices.

Be Proactive ! As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter Warren East Middle School is a PBIS School, which stands for Positive Behavior Intervention Supports. As a PBIS school we strive to have consistent expectations and procedures. I have included below a copy of the WEMS electronic device policy: !

ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY ! Electronic devices and other non-instructional materials, including but not limited to cell phones, gaming devices, iPods, and laser pointers, may not be used during instruction unless students have received permission from a teacher. Putting First Things First Exemplary Leaders

Our school-wide expectations are PRIDE as listed below. Each week, each team recognizes one student for being an “Exemplary Leader,” someone who’s doing a great job meeting and/or

exceeding our expectations at WEMS. These are our exemplary leaders this week:

Bryanna Peck-Buccaneers

Taina Gonzalez-Pirates

Maddie Gill-Warriors

Luke Howard-Cavaliers

Allyson Franklin-Related Arts

Message from the Superintendent Dear WCPS Community,

The WCPS Boundary Planning Committee met on October 26, 2015 to discuss information that was requested from committee members during our last meeting in September. This information included current enrollment numbers and current school capacities. With this information, members discussed possible movement of students to eliminate split elementary schools and to improve bus transportation efficiency. All of this information was shared in isolation; therefore, no boundary map template has been developed for the WCPS Board of Education or the public to view. In other words, we have not “connected the dots” to determine the implication of each suggestion which makes it premature at this point to present a plausible map of new boundary lines. The next step in this process is to take the suggestions from last night’s meeting as well as information collected during our Parent Forums and bring them all together at our next meeting on Monday, November 16 for further discussion. At that time, our committee will develop its final recommendations for the Board to consider prior to the development of boundary map templates. Because community feedback and transparency have been cornerstones of this process, the community will have an opportunity to view any draft boundary maps that are developed for Board Members to review. The tentative timeline includes proposals to be brought to the December 17 WCPS Board of Education meeting or the January meeting. As this process finally nears the end, I want to again thank each of our Boundary Planning Committee members for their time and effort during the last few months. Recognizing that any decision would not satisfy all constituents, I am appreciative of their willingness to get involved in such a challenging process that only impacts growth school districts. I am thankful for each member’s courage to share their feedback as we continue to make decisions that not only impact our students today but shape our district for many years to come. The representatives from each of our feeder schools systems and our business community have only reaffirmed my belief in our outstanding school community. Please feel free to visit (www.warrencountyschools.org) for additional boundary planning information that includes frequently asked questions (FAQ), current attendance zones, and a map of current school boundary lines. Should you have any questions throughout this process, I encourage you to submit them via email to [email protected], and the appropriate district personnel will follow up with you. Respectfully, Rob Clayton !10/28/2015
