Happy New Year!

A Message from Pastor Jacquie

East Naples United Methodist Church

January 2018

“In the year of king Uzziah’s death, I saw the Lord sitting

on a high and exalted throne, the edges of his robe filling

the temple.” (Is.6:1)

The prophet Isaiah came to the temple with an overwhelm-

ing feeling of despair. He saw himself as a sinful man,

member of a sinful nation. He did not considered himself

worthy to address God on behalf of his people, but in spite

of Isaiah’s sinfulness God chose to reveal himself to Isaiah.

Isaiah then experienced a divine encounter. Three things

happened to Isaiah when he met God:

1. He received a new Vision

2. He obtained the Victory

3. He began a service Venture

January is the time for new beginnings and resolutions. Let

us seek God with a new passion and zeal, so we too can

receive a new vision, victory and set the course for a new

and dynamic service venture. One that would bless not

just us, but also, the community around us and beyond!

Peace to you and yours ~ Pastor Jacquie

A Change in Church Administration "The Church Leadership Team"

A change has been implemented in the administration format of the church. We were

the only United Methodist Church in Naples that still used the Trustee, Finance and

Administration Council style of administration. Other churches have gone to formats

that use the concept of a Leadership Team or Council. This new format will handle the

responsibilities of property, facilities and finances. The advantages of this new system

will be to cut back on the number of meetings needed - decisions will be made in a

timely manner. This Team is composed of members from Finance, Trustees and Ad

Council. Other members will be from SPRC, Lay leadership and Staff. Combining these

three entities into one will better serve the church. There is no change for SPRC,

Endowment and The Learning Center Committees. Other Church and staff committees

will remain the same, they will report to the Church Leadership Team as required.

For more on this change, please contact either Pastor Jacquie or Tom McElroy.

NOTES FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT

Our ENUMC Christmas Concert was such a blessing! It was so wonderful to have four church choirs joining together to produce such an amazing project. The 75 member choir sang their hearts out and the soloists all sang glorious! Thanks to everyone that came and supported us with their attendance and offering! We’re excited to start planning our next project with this “community church choir”!!!

Our next concert on the series will be Jodie DeSalvo on January 14th at 3pm. Join Jodie and guest musicians from the Naples Philharmonic for some of the best chamber music ever written! Some favorites include the Arensky piano trio and the Dvorak piano quintet. Glenn Basham and Ming Gao on violin, Si Chen Liu, cello, and Betty Lewis, viola. Jodie never ceases to give and amazing performance and a very entertaining afternoon of music! Be sure to come early! This one is always “almost standing room only”! Last year we sat people in the choir loft!

We would like to invite anyone interesting in joining the choir to come and check it out. We have fun at rehearsal (a LOT sometimes – haha). Please know you are welcome and we would love to have you join us!

CRAFTY LADIES

How can a small child Christmas shop for his\her family and still keep the gifts a secret? ENUMC Crafty Ladies helped make this possible by hosting a shopping day for our Learning Center children.

On Thursday, December 14,in Elsie Hall, approximately 50 children, a few at a time, were able to select handmade and reason-ably priced gifts for family members. These gifts were later wrapped and tagged by the LC teachers and aides.

The event has become a tradition each yearend is enjoyed by everyone—kids and adults alike. Some of the most popular gifts selected have been candy cane reindeer, yarn boxes with candy kisses inside, leather key rings ,angel ornaments, cake in a mug , towels a hot pads and many other items.

Crafty Ladies meet on Thursdays in Elsie Hall from ten till two. We welcome all ladies gifted in crafts or not. Its a great group of women who love to fellowship together. Our next day will be Jan 4th.

MISSONS COMMITTEE

Grace Place – January Mission of the Month Grace Place puts faith into action – providing pathways out of poverty by educating children and families. They offer free programs in four areas. Their programs include:

BRIGHT BEGINNINGS - Bright Beginnings works to prepare mothers to guide their child though the crucial years of early development and to be their child’s first teacher. SCHOOL AGE PROGRAMS - The School Age Programs include programs for elementary, middle school grades and high school students. ADULT EDUCATION - The Adult Education classes enable students to improve their language, literacy and life skills. FRIDAY FOOD PANTRY - Although education is the core focus of Grace Place and its mission, the Friday Food Pantry meets the basic need of nourishment and health to support success in educational programs.

For more information check out their website www.graceplacenaples.org. We will be scheduling a tour of the Grace Place campus soon. Look for details in the bulletin and on the bulletin board in the narthex. Grace Place has opened four new buildings on their Golden Gate City campus in the last two years and they are currently building the last building in the masterplan. Come see what is happening and how you might be able to help.

Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes – We collected 76 shoeboxes and others built their shoeboxes online. Your efforts will not only bring smiles to the faces of children around the world but also bring lessons about Jesus.

Shadowlawn Christmas Families - We have many cheerful givers who opened their hearts to help families this Christmas. Thank you so much! Some of you donated money or gift cards, some of you chose a gift tag and bought a present and some of you prayed for these families and this project. We supported 10 families with 23 children. Thanks for all your prayers and support.

Cuba – February Mission of the Month I look forward to sharing information about my trip to Cuba during an evening program. Please continue to pray for our Cuban brothers and sisters and their churches. There are many ways you can help.

ECHO – March Mission of the Month We will be taking a tour of ECHO in late February or

early March. Come see the wonderful work being done to help with the problem of global hunger in

our own backyard. ECHO is in North Ft. Myers.

Christmas in Immokalee with the ENUMC Youth

Each year, our church youth visit Immoka-lee on the Sunday before Christmas. Thanks to Duane Poorman for driving us there this year to fellowship with the youth and adult leaders at the Immokalee Church of the Nazarene. Our youth band performed, their ladies sang along with two youth dancing to a traditional Creole song – just ask Devin and Zach – they learned some of the moves, too. After Rev. Jean Paul shared a message, we all ate cookies and punch together and watched the children open their Christmas gifts, provided by Thomas Riley Artisans’ Guild employees. We stopped for dinner on the way home at New York Pizza & Pasta and felt ready to head back to school to finish up mid-terms and the semester break knowing that we had made new friends and celebrated the true meaning of the Christmas season.

Youth Christmas Party

The youth held their traditional Christmas Party and white elephant gift exchange on December 10th. Thanks to Mallory Poff for coordinating games and to Jessica Chronister for sharing the Christmas message. What a nice surprise to have Jessica stop by and visit with the youth! Hats off to the parents for all the yummy food and a BIG THANKS to Jeff, Anna, Kelly and Danielle for volunteering to help make the night such fun for the youth. Next year we want more swiping of gifts and even more youth joining in on the fun!

Jan 7th Youth Group

Come join us in the New Year for youth group fun in the Christian Rock Cafe . Devin Oetman (our fall intern student) will be sharing her message. Band practice is from 5-6pm and dinner and youth group is from 6-8pm. See you there!

2017 Recap and 2018 Expectations from the Finance Chairperson 2017 has been an exciting year financially for ENUMC. While I don’t have the final 2 weeks of information as of when I am writing this report, I can provide some high and low points around our finances. We estimate our income at year-end to be about $829,000. And while this is far short of our budgeted needs, I am estimating our year end expenses to be about $916,000. That make a deficit or shortage of about $86,900. As you can imagine, spending more than you earn is not a good thing. We have had to reach into our savings to make this difference. This is at least the 5th year in a row that our expenses have exceeded our income. Additionally, we are starting 2018 with some large expenses that we cannot avoid. Hurricane Irma has left us with some major roof damage, as well as water damage. We also have to finish paying for the stain glass windows. These two expense are expected to be between $50 and $60 thousand dollars. The doom and gloom side of me says that we will eventually run out of savings (way too soon at the current rate). But, if we don’t keep up the facilities, and fund new programs, we will not grow or have anything to offer our members and our community. So, I choose to look at this as opportunities to grow. To quote a movie, “if you build it, they will come.” Well, we have built it (or fixed it), so it is time to get them to come. The only way we can end this deficit spending is to: 1) increase the income to the church, and/or 2) cut our expenses. Starting with the second point first, cutting expenses. Our Staff has done a great job of cutting expenses every year. And they do it without any serious complaining. They understand we are losing money. Plus, over 50% of our expenses are related to staff (salaries, taxes, benefits, etc…). So unless we want to go down that path, we are seriously limited on any additional cutting of expenses. The other option is to increase income. To successfully do that, it will require YOUR help. Everyone: young or old, staff or congregation, full time or seasonal; must do the following 3 activities: Increase your giving, even if it’s just you weekly loose change, or a huge “one a year” check. Bring your friends, coworkers, or neighbors to church. Word of mouth is the # 1 method of

getting people to visit a church. And we have a service for everyone. Not to mention some awesome Bible studies and a great youth program.

Pray. Talk with God, let Him into your heart: ask His guidance on helping our church. And finally, as we start 2018, we are going to begin a HUGE stewardship campaign. It is important that all of our church attendees, both year-round residents as well as our seasonal friends, understand that we need everyone’s help with our general funds. Please prayerfully consider increasing your giving to the general funds. God Bless and Happy 2018. Respectfully submitted by Paul Clemmensen

The children have been busy during November and December. From outdoor movie nights to Christmas parties we have come together as a church family for food, fellowship and fun! The Learning Center and ENUMC have sponsored family friendly events where we averaged between 60-80 people in attendance. We also sang The 12 days of Christmas and Light of the Stable during the 11:15am Christmas Eve Service. The children’s department hope you had a wonderful Advent and Christmas season. We look towards the Spring and invite you to our EASTER CELEBRATION Saturday, March 31st from 10-12. We hope to see you there!

lighting the Advent wreath.

I would like to extend an invitation to you to join me and Pam, your clergy colleagues, and many of our Florida Conference church members on a Florida Conference pilgrimage to Italy planned for April 3 – 12, 2018. As we visit the stunning cities of Venice, Assisi, Siena, Florence and Rome, we will be immersed in the rich traditions of the Christian faith. We will learn more about the gospel of Mark in Venice and the legacy of Peter; we will read the dialogues of Catherine of Siena and the meditations of Dante; and we will reflect on the renewing vision given to Francis of Assisi. In Rome, as we visit the Sistine Chapel, we will consider the legacies of the most recent Popes, especially John XXIII, Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis. And in each setting we will be inspired by the world’s great art and architecture. Our ten-day fellowship with each other will be April 3 – 12, 2018. For a detailed description of our itinerary and registration, please visit our website at www.flumc.org and click on this link: http://www.flumc.org/opportunitydetail/8868904 I look forward to sharing the experience of travel, study, worship and fellowship with you on this wonderful, life-transforming pilgrimage in April! The Peace of the Lord, Bishop Kenneth H. Carter

Learning Center Happenings

Everyone does Love a Parade! We had over 65 Learning Center families and Church members come out and walk the Naples Christmas Parade. We had such a wonderful time singing Christ-mas songs, ringing bells, handing out invites to join us at Church along with other special treats. It was an amazing time making new friends. The Learning Center children have been very busy making special Christmas cards for “Ryland”. He is the 5 year old boy who was shot five times in the Texas Church shooting, his two sisters and stepmother were killed. All Ryland wanted for Christmas are Christmas Cards and that is exactly what he will be getting from The Learning Center Children. On Friday, December 22nd the children will wear their favorite Christmas Pajama’s to school and Celebrate Jesus’ Birthday. The Learning Center children had a very exciting time Christmas shopping for their families members at the Crafty Ladies Christmas Shop. Each week at The Learning Center the children are taught a new Bible lesson and verse, weekly themes, their colors, shapes, letters, math, science, character development and much more. During the week we have weekly readers from the church family come in and read to the children for about 20 minutes, if you are interested in reading to the children please call the preschool office to see what days are available 239-775-0745. Did you know that if you refer a family member, friend or business associate to The Learning Center Preschool and they enroll you will receive a Gift from us as our way of saying Thank you. We Wish You All A Very Happy Healthy New Year! As always we thank you for your prayers, support and referrals.
