T here is something lovely about this time of year: even on the less appealing days it rarely gets too chilly, the soil is warm

and feels all the more full of potential. But there is no doubt that your vegetable growing may seem to be close to peaking and perhaps in some areas on the decline. Rather than forget-ting the fun of growing your own until next year, why not add to what you already have and start some crops from fresh? If you’ve missed the boat totally and never actually planted anything this year, there’s still time to grow some tasty home grown vegetable and herbs....it’s not too late to start, but you’ll have to get your skates on.

Knowing what responds best to late sowing is the key, and knowing what might be worth the risk has the potential to be the icing on the cake.

If you enjoy miniature beetroot or baby beet as they’re often known, then buy a packet of beetroot seed and sow some of them promptly for a delicious, crop of small-sized beetroot from the autumn until Christmas.

French beans are so much better when grown at home. It is hard to make them tough or tasteless. A speedy sowing now should produce plenty of beans that you can harvest in mid-autumn. Choose a variety such as ‘Tendergreen’ and it should perform well.

Spring onions make really tasty additions to salads, ploughman’s lunches and stir-fries. They grow rapidly and although it is getting late, a prompt sowing now should still give you a crop of tiny spring onions in October. Sow enough to leave some in the soil where you can then harvest full-sized versions in March.

Rocket with its spicy dark green leaves makes a great ingredient for salads and be-cause the plants grow so fast, a sowing made now will soon be producing a brilliant crop. Make successional sowings every couple of weeks. There...almost too much to eat! C rail Golfing Society is inviting all Fife golfers to sample the delights it has to offer, as part of its pro-

gramme of events to celebrate the historic milestone of its 225th anniversary. “We are holding our first-ever Open Day on Sunday 18th September,” said Society Captain Ian Dickson. “We want to wel-come as many golfers as possible to play one of our two courses and enjoy the comfort of our newly refurbished club-house.” As well as a round of golf on either Bal-comie or Craighead Links, players – men, women or juniors – will be provided with bacon rolls and coffee from 11.30am, an after-round light meal and a ‘goody bag’. In keeping with the 225th theme, the Soci-ety has set the price of the package at £22.50 – less than one third of the week-end green fee. The Society was founded in 1786 and is the seventh oldest club in existence (out of around 36,000 worldwide!). Unlike many other venerable clubs, however, the Society is forward looking, open and wel-coming, with new members and visitors commenting on the friendliness they have encountered. “For golfers who decide they would like to join us as members, we have created a special, enhanced ‘225th’ membership package, which will be available on the day,” explained Ian Dickson. As well as two exceptional courses – Bal-comie is an 1895 creation by Tom Morris and Craighead a 1998 design by Golf Course Architect of the Year Gil Hanse – the Society possesse s a spacious, mod-

ern clubhouse, driving range and practice facility and a fully equipped Pro Shop. The attractiveness of golf at Crail has long been recognised all over the world – not least for its year round nature – and many of the Society’s members hail from all corners of the globe. In addition to unlimited golf on their own two courses, Crail members are also able to enjoy free golf on Blairgowrie’s two courses, and half price golf at six other courses – Lundin Links, Scotscraig, Lady-bank, Forfar, Alyth and Dunblane - thanks to reciprocal arrangements. “Both our courses are in wonderfully sce-nic settings,” commented Ian Dickson. “On a good summer’s day, there is no finer place to be than on one of our many elevated tees with panoramic views of the courses, the rocky shores, the sweeping bays and the sea. Sometimes, it’s difficult to concentrate on playing your shot!” The clubhouse has a 30 feet long trophy cabinet crammed with an extraordinary array of silverware, reflecting both the Society’s ancient roots and its wide range of competitive events for the members. A ll around us there are things we miss because we are running around and do not take the time to

stop and smell the roses.

We live in such a frantic paced world! The world is not frantic; we are! We are the ones who choose to run around at the fast pace. Do we think we are ever going to make up for lost time? The world keeps turning at the same speed. We all have the same twenty-four hours in a day and it is how we choose to use those hours that causes us to be so busy that we don’t take time for the simple things in life like smelling the roses.

You are so busy that you don’t even

notice the roses along your path; much less think about smelling them. We are oblivious to the things going on around us because our mind is reacting to yet an-other mess we have gotten ourselves into because we don’t know how to stop pro-crastinating.

We have two speeds; full out pedal to

the metal or slamming on the breaks! Have you ever ridden with someone who drives like this? Just the thought of this makes me sick! Why do we treat our-selves like this with jack-rabbit starts and stops. We deserve better!

The stops don’t happen often; they only

occur after you have crashed and burned. We don’t know how to take it slow and steady. All we know is if we will just keep going as fast as we can we can accom-plish all we have to in one day. We can stop living like this.

You are not more effective under stress.

That is a lie we tell ourselves because we do not know how to stop unless we are forced to. I think we have to look at the reasons we are rush-ing around for us to be able to stop and rest. Procrastination is vicious monster that causes us to peddle faster and faster. We put off doing something till i t is screaming at us.

You know how it is; you put off filling

your car up with gas and now you are in a hurry to pick up your child at school and you just had to do one more thing before you walked out the door. That is perfec-tionism and procrastination giving you the one two punch! No wonder you don’t have time to stop and smell the roses you are too busy putting out fires!

Do you hear these words come out of

your mouth many times a day; I don’t have time, I’m late? This is an important clue for you! Next time those words soil your lips; I want you to think about why you are in this pickle! I promise you it is because you put off doing something or you allowed your perfectionism to take over.

You don’t have to live this way another

day! You have a choice and if you choose the “do it now” principle, you may find that there are enough hours in a day and you do have time to stop and smell the roses!

Life is filled with choices and you get to

Travel Hidden France

I n the foots teps of Robert Louis Stevenson. In 1870, aged jus t 19, Scottish writer R.L. Stevenson set off with a donkey through the

rural heartlands of south-central France, from the Upper Loire to the Cévennes . Man and beas t covered 220 km, he to nurse a broken heart, she, the cantankerous Modestine, to carr y the bags. Today, many follow in their footsteps, with or without donkey, browsing a copy of Stevenson’s ’Travels with a D onkey in the C évennes’ as they tackle the whole trail in 12 days or just a shorter section.

The main part of the trail crosses the Lozèr e, the l east populated French county wher e they say you can see the Milky Way cl earer than anywher e else. Here any village over 1000 peopl e becomes a ‘town’, gathered around a ‘storm spire’ where bells woul d ring in bad weather to guide wander-ers to safety. Many seem caught in a ti me warp, preser ving their old wash-house, communal br ead oven or wayside shrines.

For nature lovers, the Stevenson trail is a real haven, fr om meadows and fores ts, all waterfalls and babbling streams, to limestone plateaux, high pastures and moors strewn with heather and

golden broom. After the

damp misty days on the early part of his trek, Stevenson had finall y arri ved in the South of France. Her e a warm breeze rus-tles through the trees, hamlets nestle on the steep slopes and cows with tinkling bells graze in l ush pastures among dramatic boulders. In this land of shale and chestnut, the mountain path heads down to Pont de Montvert, an idyllic village tucked in the cusp of the hills. The H uguenot upheavals are still remembered here but every trekker on the Stevenson trail heads straight for the Auberge des Cévennes on the banks of the river Tarn. U p on the wall hangs the portrait of Clarisse who waited at the young man’s tabl e, the first pretty girl he had met since day one, ‘her grey eyes steeped in amorous l anguor.’ What happened then, no one knows for sure but as today’s ram-blers continue to St Jean du Gard, there is tal k of romance and a donkey patiently nibbling on mari-golds.
