In addition to supplying almost 10% of Auckland’s GDP, this area of South Auckland incorporates vibrant communities and neighbourhoods. Therefore a key part of the study into improving travel time reliability and safety has been to look at the contribution that could be made by better public transport, walking and cycling links. Our immediate focus has been to improve public transport links between the town centres of Otahuhu, Papatoetoe, Manukau, Mangere, Mangere Bridge, Onehunga and Sylvia Park. This is the first area in all of Auckland to benefit from the New Network approach of providing more frequent bus services along major routes, which will more than double the amount of South Auckland residents within 500m of a frequent service. We are also reviewing all bus stops and shelters along the New Network routes, to ensure the provision of appropriate cover, seating and customer information. Longer term these bus routes will feed into a more efficient and user-friendly public transport network that includes bus/train interchanges and integrated ticketing, making it easier to get around. For more information on the New Network and to have your say, visit www.aucklandtransport.govt.nz/newnetwork We are also committed to investing in active travel choices. New on-street bus stops along the New Network will replace the existing Otahuhu Bus Station, including two new facilities to enable good access to/from the Recreation Centre. As outlined in the Auckland Plan, improved walking and cycling connections, access to open space and traffic congestion relief, particularly around the Onehunga Mall area, have been identified as key priorities to make Onehunga a principal centre. An aging but key part of both the local community and Auckland’s regional cycle network, the old Mangere Bridge will be replaced with a new structure that still caters for walking, cycling and fishing. More frequent services along major routes will improve connections around South Auckland. In addition to improved public transport connections, an extended Waikaraka cycleway will also provide better local access to New Zealand’s largest retail centre, Sylvia Park. EAST WEST STORYIMPROVING PUBLIC TRANSPORT CONNECTIONS AND TRAVEL CHOICESOur transport network plays an extremely important role in sustaining social as well as economic growth. In addition to supplying almost 10% of Auckland’s GDP, this area of South Auckland incorporates vibrant communities and neighbourhoods. Therefore a key part of the study into improving travel time reliability and safety has been to look at the contribution that could be made by better public transport, walking and cycling links.

The “New Old” Mangere Bridge will be built to preserve a key section of Auckland’s walking and cycling network, while the east-west connection will be strengthened by an extension of the Waikaraka Cycleway that will provide a direct link between Mangere Bridge and Sylvia Park.
