History of our ClubThe course sits proudly on the top of the hill alongside the A259 East Dean Road on the western outskirts of Eastbourne. It was first laid out in 1908 by J.H. Taylor, a legendary golfer, Ryder Cup captain and five times winner of the Open Championship who went on to become an equally successful golf course architect.The first Club Captain was Stanley Ellis, while Mr Carew Davies-Gilbert, a member of the well-known family who can lay claim to be the founding fathers of Eastbourne, drove off at the opening ceremony on 2 August, 1909.The original 1909 clubhouse was located at the bottom of the hill. In 1974 the club moved to a new clubhouse, built on “the top” to move the club into a new era alongside many new course alterations. Eastbourne Downs has a special claim to fame as the home of Major Cyril Tolley, who enjoyed a glittering amateur career which saw him win the Amateur Championship in 1920 and 1929 and represent Great Britain in the Walker Cup against America on no less than seven occasions.Major Tolley, who was renowned as being one of the most powerful hitters of his time, joined the club on 7 October, 1909 as a Junior member. By November 1910, at 15 years old he was playing off 16 and just five years later was a scratch golfer.When his competitive golfing career was over, Major Tolley became president of the Club from 1954 until 1979.

The Course ContinuedThere is the chance to use every club in the bag and some birdie opportunities, such as the par-4 16th which at 293 yards can be driven if conditions are favourable.By contrast, and something which will appeal to the better player, is the challenge thrown up by some of our more difficult holes.The 7th is a monster of a hole at 582 yards. Few courses can boast a par 5 as their Stroke Index 1, but this does need three good shots to get anywhere near the green in addition to avoiding trouble left and right.Think all short holes offer a respite? The par-3 8th, which at 199 yards off the white tees is deceptively long, often needs a driver to reach the green.To complement the course, we offer some excellent practice facilities. Just a short walk from the clubhouse can be found the practice ground, which is about 250 yards in length and is available to members and golfers taking lessons.There is a chipping area in one corner of the practice area and also a very nice practice putting green allowing players to become adjusted to the pace of the greens on the course.

The Professional and the Pro shopThe Head Professional and Golf Manager at Eastbourne Downs is Terry Marshall. Formerly an assistant professional at East Brighton Golf Club, Terry joined the club in 1985 and this association stretching over more than a quarter of a century has seen him become an extremely popular figure with the members at Eastbourne Downs.Terry has a wealth of experience, offering practical advice, lessons and a shop literally crammed with golf equipment and accessories to cater for every possible golfing need. One of his specialities is club repairs and he provides a re-shafting and regripping service on site.So if you just want a refreshment to pop in to your golf bag before taking to the course or a full set of the latest must-have game improvement irons, the Pro Shop is the place to go.If you have your eye on a particular club but it is not in stock we will do our best to source it for you.Electric and pull trolleys are available for hire for those looking to take the weight of a golf bag off their shoulders. Juniors to adultsEastbourne Downs has a very active and enthusiastic group of junior golfers. We recognise the younger players are the future of ours and every other club up and down the land and do everything we can to encourage them.There are outstanding membership deals available for Juniors (aged up to 18), Cadets (18-21) and full-time students, including apprentices. Discounts are also offered to ease the move to full membership with special intermediate rates available to players in the 22-25, 26-30 and 31-35 age brackets.During the year, the youngsters play matches against other clubs across the county, including fixtures in the Downland League against Seaford, Lewes, Willingdon and Royal Eastbourne. They also have their own monthly medal, while the highlight of the year is the Club Championship played in the summer.More and more young players are starting to get inspired to take up the game, particularly with a whole new generation of charismatic and talented young golfers such as Rory McIlroy making such an impact in the world of golf.Terry Marshall, our friendly Professional, can get your child started on the right track, hopefully inspiring a healthy interest in the great outdoors and our great sport that can last a lifetime. Terry also holds junior group tuition once a month on a Saturday morning which, while emphasising fun, also has a structured programme concentrating on basic technique, irons, woods, chipping, putting and sand play.

The ClubhouseThe clubhouse at Eastbourne Downs was refurbished in 2008 to help us celebrate our centenary in style. Comfortable and spacious, it is as welcoming as you would wish and after golf it is a perfect place to relax, discuss the round and analyse why you didn’t score better!Enjoy a warm welcome from our bar staff who will be delighted to serve you a refreshing drink from amongst our wide selection of draught and bottled beers, fine wine and spirits or soft drinks.While away a pleasant afternoon chatting or gazing out of the window at the incredible views of Eastbourne and out over the English Channel. On a clear day you can see for more than 40 miles.Hungry? No problem - our caterers are adept at quietening rumbling tummies. A full breakfast menu is available from 8.30am Monday to Friday and from 7am on weekends right through until when the kitchen closes. social activitiesWith friendly, approachable members and staff and outstanding off-course facilities, we really feel there is nowhere better to enjoy not only your golf, but everything else that a well-rounded golf club has to offer.Not only does the setting on top of the Downs lend itself to some spectacular golf, it is also a pretty special place to relax as well. The club offers a Social Membership at a very reasonable rate, with discounts for social members whose partners are already members at the Downs.This allows the member to attend any of our organised events throughout the year, as well as to receive a privilege card enabling the bearer to enjoy a 20 per cent discount off alcoholic drinks and 10 per cent off food.The club has a social committee who work tirelessly throughout the year organising events. The highlight is undoubtedly the annual dinner and dance in November, but there is much more besides, with New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day among the dates in the diary marked for special celebration. Barbecues, quiz nights and race nights, live bands and Hallowe’en discos have all featured as part of our club’s social activities.Much of the socialising is linked to golf, with meals after fixtures played by the men, women and seniors emphasising the friendly nature of our sport.For members, there are fun competitions organised on Bank Holiday Mondays often featuring novel new formats which have to be explained before players take to the tee!

From the NorthFollow the A22 southbound to the Polegate roundabout, picking up the A27 West towards Brighton. Continue straight on as the road becomes A2270 Willingdon Road through the Polegate crossroads towards the town centre, ensuring you take the second exit (effectively straight on) at the Willingdon Road roundabout. Just before the town centre, turn right on to The Goffs (A259) and follow this road for about a mile and a half. The entrance to the club is at the top of the hill, on the right.From the East (Hastings)Take the A27, turning left on to the A22 Golden Jubilee Way before reaching Polegate. Continue straight on to the Lottbridge Drove roundabout, taking the second exit on to Cross Levels Way ( A2280). Remain on this road until reaching the Kings Drive roundabout by Eastbourne District General Hospital. Take the second exit into Rodmill Drive and follow this road to the end, turning left on to Willingdon Road (A2270). Just before the town centre, turn right on to The Goffs (A259) and follow this road for about a mile and a half. The entrance to the club is at the top of the hill, on the right.
