THE CONFESSION

MC

God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy, welcoming sinners and inviting them to the Lord’s Table.

Silence

Let us now draw near to God with sincerity and confidence and pray,

Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ABSOLUTION

Celebrant

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

MC Almighty God, your blessed Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: mercifully give us faith to trust that, as he promised, he abides with us on earth until the end of time; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD All sit

FIRST READING

A reading from The Acts of the Apostles 1:15-17, 21-26 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred twenty persons) and said,

5 |

"Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus-- for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry." So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us--one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection." So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed and said, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place." And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 1 - 1 – 6

1 Blessed are they who have not walked

in the │counsel • of the │wicked: nor lingered in the way of sinners, nor sat in the as │sembly │of the │scornful.

2 Their del ight is in the │law of the │Lord: and they meditate on his │law│day and │night.

3 Like a tree p l a n t e d by streams of water bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that │do not

│wither:

whatever they │do│it shall │prosper.

4 As for the wicked, it is not │so with │ them: they are like chaff which the │wind │blows a│way.

6 |

5 Therefore the wicked shall not be able to │stand in the │judgement:

nor the sinner in the congre│gation │of the │righteous.

6 For the Lord knows the │way of the │righteous:

but the │way of the │wicked shall │perish.

SECOND READING A reading from the First Letter of John 5:9-13 If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Cantor Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

This is my commandment, says the Lord, that you love one another, as I have loved you. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia

GRADUAL HYMN: 452 – God of mercy, God of grace GOSPEL

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

A reading from the holy gospel according to John 17:6-19 Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ

7 |

Jesus said, "I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

SERMON - Fr Neil Vearing

PROFESSION OF FAITH All stand

MC Let us together affirm the faith of the Church:

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,

8 |

true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

MC (All sit/ kneel)

Let us pray for the world and for the Church. Periods of silence may be briefly kept for personal prayer. Each petition ends with this response: Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Accept our prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord who has taught us, to pray,

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

9 |

Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen

THE GREETING OF PEACE All stand

Celebrant

We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you

OFFERTORY HYMN: 224 – All hail the power of Jesus’ name

THE PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS

Preparation of the gifts of bread and wine at the altar.

PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS

Celebrant

Source of all joy, receive our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Keep us in the love of Christ and bring us to the vision of his glory; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation: through your goodness we have this bread to offer, which earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life.

Blessed be God for ever.

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation: through your goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become for us the cup of salvation.

Blessed be God for ever.

10 |

INVITATION TO HOLY COMMUNION All communicants of other churches are invited to join us in the sharing of Holy Communion. If you are not a communicant we encourage you to come forward for a blessing. Please indicate your desire for a blessing by holding your hands behind your back as you kneel or stand at the Altar Rail.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

Cantor The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Celebrant

All thanks and praise, glory and honour be yours at all times, in every place, holy and loving Father, true and living God.

We praise you that through your eternal Word you brought the universe into being and made us in your own image.

You have given us this earth to care for and delight in, and with its bounty you preserve our life.

We thank you that you bound yourself to the human race with the promises of a gracious covenant and called us to serve you in love and peace.

Above all we give you thanks for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ: born as one of us, he lived our common life and offered his life to you in perfect obedience and trust.

By his death he delivered us from sin, brought us new life, and reconciled us to you and to one another.

Therefore with angels and archangels, with apostles, and prophets, with holy men and women of every age, we proclaim your great and glorious name saying/singing:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.

11 |

Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest

Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood.

On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,

‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’

After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples saying,

‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’

Cantor

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith,

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

12 |

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world.

Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise:

Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

Every time we eat the bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

The priest and sanctuary party receive their Communion
