St. Matthew’s Enjoyed a Baked Potato Bar On Sunday, March 14, Everybody had fun fixing potatoes their way with an array of topping choices. Randi Berry brought a fresh

salad; field picked fresh from her home garden. The potluck was polished off with a number of scrumptious desserts. The new kitchen made this event move smoothly. A special, “thank you”, to the Gad-Abouts who sponsored this event. Save the Date: A Tostada and Burrito bar will be held on Sunday, May 2 after 10:00 worship; where you can create your own tostada and burrito. RVers In Mission – The RVers In Mission arrived at St. Matthew’s on Sunday afternoon, March 21. They helped paint the church and put in new landscaping. There was a celebration “thank you” potluck held on Thursday, March 25. All Church Work Day – St. Matthew’s was spruced up for Easter on our All Church Workday on Saturday, March 20. Thank you to all who participated. Confirmation Class – Started on Sunday afternoon, March 14 and will conclude in mid June. Crop Walk – The annual Crop Walk was held on Sunday, March 7 at California Lutheran University; twelve of St. Matthew’s members participated in the walk. Thank you, Jack Doman, for encouraging St. Matthew’s to participate in this event. Money raised goes to feed the hungry and 25% of the proceeds stay in the area to feed the hungry in the area. The Servant Ministry Team – was able to send 44 boxes to the Children’s Hungry Fund. Thank you to the generosity of St. Matthew’s. Also, there are blue baskets in the Narthex where food dona-tions may be left for the local food pantry. Six family unites will be recipients of an Easter dinner due to the food dona-tions from these donations. The Servant Ministry Team also coordinated this event. The Gad-Abouts – Attended “Symphonic Passion” at California Lutheran University, with the CLU’s Symphony at Samuelson’s Chapel. Coffee Fellowship – The Congregation enjoys a coffee fellowship after our 10:00a worship. We need volunteers to sign-up and bring refreshments each Sunday. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board set up each Sunday in the patio area.

The Shepherd’s Pen

This month is the month in which we will be celebrating the Resur-rection of Jesus the Christ from the dead. What does that mean to us who are still alive in this world? Well, it holds a great hope and promise for both the now and the future. For the present it holds the hope of coming alive in ways we may not have considered possible. In the present we may be facing a dead end job or a failed relationship or business going out of business or a diagnosis which threatens life itself. The scripture offers these words of hope after the resurrec-tion of Jesus from the dead. “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor an-gels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:37-39 NSRV Now I can confidently say that Paul who wrote those words, died and is no

longer in the earthly tent he used to live in. In fact, this could be said of all those who lived in that time. But, I can also say that those who believed as he did not die in vain. There are many historical writings to substantiate their testimony and their willingness to die for their faith. Why were they willing to die for their faith? They believed in the resurrec-tion of the dead because of the testimony of Je-sus and his disciples who followed him.

Now, for those of us who need something more substantial to be-lieve in, there are con-temporary witnesses to how faith in the resur-rected Jesus Christ gave them new life in the here and now as well as hope for the there and then of the future. There are many books written by people, some of whom have extraor-dinary stories to tell. However, I am re-minded of the story Jesus told about a cer-tain man named Laza-rus. No, not the Laza-rus he raised from the dead (see John 11). This was a story about someone else. The bot-tom line of the story was this. If the rich man’s brothers would not believe Moses and the Prophets, then nei-ther would they believe if someone came back from the dead.

Where does that leave us? It leaves us with a choice of what to be-lieve. Life itself is not possible without faith. It takes faith to have fam-ily and children. I work because I believe that work will bring to me the things I desire and hope for. I save for the future and retirement. Not because the future is certain, but because I believe the future is possible and that sav-ings will help. I would venture to say that noth-ing that has happened or will happen without faith. It becomes a mat-ter of what you believe. It is for the Christian a matter of who you be-lieve in. If I believe in myself, I can fail my-self. If I believe in you, you may fail me. If I believe in nothing or nobody, then nothing or nobody will fail me but what does that accom-plish? No, I suggest to you that the only faith which offers a real hope of the future is in the one who will not fail you, Jesus Christ of Nazareth, Son of God and Son of man, Resur-rected Savior.

So celebrate the resur-rection this Easter, April 4, 2010, and have faith for faith and life for life eternal.

Together in Christ, Pastor Bob Ferguson

MORE REASONS TO PREPARE By Jack Doman

Since I composed the article for last month’s newsletter, a dev-astating earthquake in Chile has brought the truth of the title of that article, which was NOT “IF” BUT “WHEN”. If we can’t prevent an earthquake, then we need to be ready for it. The arti-cles that have run in our newsletter should be a good start to getting our families ready for whatever nature has in store.

We have covered water, food, first aid and clothing. This month we want to look at the tools and supplies that the American Red Cross suggests that we have on hand. 1. Mess kits or paper plates and plastic utensils

2. Cash or traveler’s checks

3. A non-electric can opener

4. A utility knife

5. Pliers, screw driver, hammer, crowbar and assorted nails and wood screws

6. Shutoff wrench to turn off household gas and water 7. Duct tape

Most of the items on this list are likely in your garage already, so it is really a matter of organizing them. I pray that there will be no more tragic disasters this month, but if they come to us, I pray that we are prepared.

Food Donation Matching Bonus! Nonperishable food donated between now and the end of April will help our local food banks earn a portion of the $1,000,000 being donated by the Alan Shawn Feinstein Foundation for hunger programs. The more food items we collect the more money we earn. Food donations may be placed in the container near the entrance of the sanctuary any Sunday. This is a great way to double our giving. Let's take advantage of this opportu-nity!

St. Matthew’s Feeds 64 People in February On February 21, St. Matthew’s completed the winter shelter and dinner program by providing a warm, nutritious meal for 64 of our brothers and sisters. Thank you to everyone who helped make our dinners so successful as we prepared food for larger numbers of people during these trying economic times. We will be moving back to St. Julie Billiart Catholic Church for the summer homeless dinner program. As before, we will pro-vide dinners on Saturday nights at St. Julie's. Our first dinner will be April 10. Hope to see you there!

Youth, Do You Have Any Plans This Summer? Sierra Service Project Need You!! The Sierra Service Project will be sending youth teams to South Los Angeles, Northern California, Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, and Honduras this summer. The youth will build porches, wheelchair ramps and complete other home repairs and maintenance on Native Ameri-can Reservations and for senior citizens. Join High School and Junior High School youth from other areas on a life-changing mission experience this summer. Days are filled helping people, and evenings provide opportunities for city tours, singing, speakers and wor-ship. Visit the SSP website at www.sierraserviceproject.org to learn more about this opportunity. Each trip is one week long, running from June 27 to Aug 7. Conejo Valley CROP Walk St. Matthew's had 12 walkers in the 2010 Conejo Valley CROP Walk. There are more that 2000 CROP Walks held throughout the year in the United States. Church World Service Organization sponsors them all. Seventy-five percent of the revenue collected at all walks sup-ports Church World Service and its work in more than 80 countries worldwide. Immediate assistance is being focused on Haiti in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake. Money raised goes directly to help in deal-ing with natural disasters, hunger, famine, displacement and poverty. However, 25% of what is raised in the Conejo CROP Walk comes back to 5 local charities: MANNA Food Bank, local Meals on Wheels, Lutheran Social Services, and Catholic Charities. This year, the need is ever so great. The Conejo Valley CROP Walk is held every year at the beginning of March. If you didn't make it this year, be sure to join us next year!

Congratulations Ashlee Walker – Ashlee Walker, our Nursery Attendant, gave birth to a 3rd Son, Travis Walker, early in March. Ashlee provides nursery care for our babies and toddlers at St. Matthew’s. Ashlee is currently on leave and Tanya Blanck is our interim Nursery Attendant. Celebrating the Life of Anne Baker - Our dear friend, Anne Baker passed away at the end of February. A memorial service was held at St. Matthew’s to celebrate her life on Sunday, Febru-ary 28th. The Reverend Lynne Austin and Reverend Bob Fergu-son officiated at the service. Betty Johnson, our Circle of Friends coordinator, provided refreshment after the Memorial Service. Sunday School Enrollment is growing – Our Sunday School Program has been growing. If you can volunteer to teach or as-sist with classes, please see Pam Pond, our Sunday School Super-intendent. Beth Ferguson is presently teaching the 5th – 8th grade class, but will be retiring with Pastor Bob on June 28th. A leader or teacher will be needed to teach this class. If you are inter-ested, visit the class to see if you may have the calling to volunteer to teach this wonderful class. St. Matthew’s Prayer Chain – We have an on-going prayer chain at St. Matthew’s, coordinated by Lynne Hartley. If you

would like to join our prayer chain, please see Lynne; she would be happy to add you to the chain. We want to thank Dorothy Lewolt for filling in while Lynne has been away. Also, keep Dorothy in your prayers as she heals from a fractured shoulder. Please keep Dan in your prayers.
