Easter Newsletter March 2012 Easter Greetings Dear Parent/Carer This term is always an extremely busy time and this year has been no exception. We have welcomed distinguished visitors, hosted a music festival, raised thousands of pounds for charity, enjoyed sporting success and continued to focus on improving learning and teaching and raising attainment! Congratulations must go to our S4,5 and 6 pupils who have attended Supported Study classes regularly thoughout the long, cold winter, even including week-ends. I am very pleased to say that we will be able to continue this invaluable support into the Easter Holiday (see programme attached to newsletter) – and I would encourage all pupils to take up this option as it could make such a difference to the level of an award, even at this late stage. The recent warmer weather has encouraged our pupils to discard heavy coats and jackets and, once again, our new school blazer is highly visible in school and in the wider community, prompting a great deal of praise and endorsement. Can I thank you for your tremendous support in introducing the blazer and ask you to continue to encourage your child to wear the blazer every day as it completes a very smart appearance? Next term we will again be offering the service of measuring pupils for new blazers in school and blazers can then be ordered for delivery straight to the school where they can be collected. Our new S1 pupils will be measured in their current primary school and their blazers will be delivered there. More details about these arrangements will be made available to you early in the new term. School badges are also available in the school office for blazers purchased from other stores of your choice. Plans are in place to support Primary 7 pupils as they begin to make their transition into secondary. We are looking forward to welcoming them during their visits in the summer term. Current indications are that our S1 roll has increased significantly and we are delighted to welcome so many new pupils into our secondary school community. During this term the season of Lent is our key liturgical focus and as part of our observation of Lent the image of the Risen Christ has been taken down and replaced by The Christ of St John of the Cross (pictured right). Assemblies have focused on the message of Lent and at the end of this week all year groups will participate in services reflecting on The Stations of the Cross, led by Miss Macaulay, Principal Teacher RE. Amongst the many charities supported by Lourdes in recent weeks, SCIAF has continued to be our major focus during Lent and a very significant sum of money has been raised in a range of ways, some of which are outlined in this newsletter. SCIAF has been in touch to let us know that Lourdes Secondary is one of the major fund-raisers amongst schools, supporting the most vulnerable in communities across the world. Term comes to an end on Friday 30 th March and school will dismiss at 2.30 for the Easter Holiday. Pupils resume school on Monday 16 April. On behalf of the pupils and staff of Lourdes Secondary I would like to wish you a happy and restful holiday break. Best wishes Patricia Lennon Easter Newsletter March 2012 Lourdes Secondary School 47 Kirriemuir Avenue Cardonald Glasgow G52 3DF T: 0141 582 0180 F:0141 582 0181 W: www.lourdes-sec.glasgow.sch.uk

RE Retreats Retreats have been taking place for all S2 RE classes on Monday afternoons. The S2 Retreat considers the unique giftedness of each pupil as loved by God. After icebreakers, pupils view a short video called ‘Get Used to Me’ which looks at a young girl who is not accepted by her peers. The video provokes discussion as to why we are so quick to judge others; why we find it difficult to allow others to see our true selves and how much we can help others to grow simply by accepting them as they are. Centred on the Scripture Passage, ‘The Church is a Body with Many Parts’, the Retreat then moves on to the importance of working together using the skills and talents which each one of us possess. If one part does not work so well, then all other parts suffer and become less effective. The message is - that just as we need God - we also need one another in our lives in order to be all that we can be. In groups pupils will have the opportunity to choose between producing a poster or role play based on the Scripture Passage ‘The Church is a Body with Many Parts’ which will be explained/presented to the rest of the class. The Retreat concludes with a short Prayer Service.

SCIAF Events Throughout Lent the RE department has been busy working with students to raise money for our Lenten Charity appeal SCIAF. Many classes in S1/S2 have had Charity Football Matches and Sponsored Silences, while the innovative 2C4 allowed the boys in the class to have a ‘makeover’ with donations all going to SCIAF. Some of the girls painted their faces with ‘team colours’ while others cheered on their team through song and dance. As well as playing football, S4 students were involved in a huge ‘Rounders Match’ which was great fun. On Friday, 16 March the corridors of Lourdes Secondary became a “Cat Walk” when some brave boys from RE class 2C4 agreed to have a “makeover” session. Thankfully, the girls in the class were a dab hand at applying make-up and in no time at all the boys had been transformed into fairytale princesses and glamour models. A quick walk to show off their new look around the school saw the class raise more than £60.00 for SCIAF. Well done Class 2C4! Some S1 classes got in on the fund raising scene too when pupils in classes 1C5 and 1C6 held a sponsored silence in support of SCIAF and their work in developing countries. Keeping silent was more difficult for some than others, but all pupils managed to stay on “mute” for the period and so far have raised over £180 for this worthy cause. Well done!

Each year group will celebrate the Stations of the Cross which tells the story of Jesus’ last journey from Jerusalem to Calvary. Through a mixture of Music and Readings pupils will tell the story of Jesus’ last painful journey carrying the instrument of his death from the place where he was condemned to die, to Calvary where he died, and was laid in a tomb. The service prepares our students to enter into the spirit of Holy Week through participating in Parish Services throughout the Easter Triduum. It is a heart breaking journey of great sadness but we should never forget that it is a journey which ends with the Easter event – the Resurrection of Jesus which offers us the certainty that death is not the end of the story.

A Lord at Lourdes The Rt Hon. Lord Jack McConnell took part in the inaugural Lourdes Leadership Lecture at Lourdes Secondary School on Friday 20th January. Hosted by senior pupil Emma Armstrong, Lord McConnell was posed a variety of questions on leadership principles, styles and qualities and asked to relate these to his experiences. Lourdes Secondary has embarked on offering the innovative SQA Leadership Award for S6 pupils in order to provide pupils with the opportunity to develop and put into practice their Leadership skills. Leadership permeates many areas of society and is recognised and valued in education, employment and life. Leadership development is a focus area for all students in Lourdes this year but particularly so for S6. The award helps pupils understand the meaning of leadership by researching and exploring different leadership styles and the skills and qualities needed or demonstrated by effective leaders. To do so pupils will compare a number of leaders and analyse their style, skills and qualities in order to find their own style. They are then given the opportunity to use this knowledge and harness their own potential for leadership by taking the lead in an activity of their own choosing. So far the pupils have led the way in organising whole school charity events, writing and sports clubs for fellow pupils, coaching and teaching in local schools and with younger

Whilst looking at leaders in society today, the group wanted to hear first hand from someone who has had a potentially challenging leadership role. Who better than a former First Minister of Scotland? After Mrs Ross made contact Lord McConnell was delighted to come to speak with students and happy to answer the very searching questions posed by S6 and a group of S1 pupils. Pupils were given an insight into the way Lord McConnell’s leadership style skills and qualities have developed, how he dealt with the many challenges a leader faces and indeed what he would have done differently during his time in office.

Signing at Lourdes As part of the S1 Curriculum Enrichment option 'Introduction to Sign language', pupils have engaged with a DeafBlind Scotland project called 'Touching Lives'. S1 pupils learned first-hand what it is like to be deaf and blind with the aid of simulation glasses. They were also taught how to use Deafblind Manual, a tactile communication method using ‘fingerspelling’ delivered onto the hand of the deafblind individual.

The Modern Languages department has had a very busy term. Many of our pupils in S1 to S4 have been working hard in Modern Languages and have been rewarded for their efforts and behaviour by receiving a ‘Pupil of the Month’ Certificate. Award winners are listed below. S1 and S2 classes have been taking part in ‘skills focus weeks’, building their confidence in reading, writing, listening and talking using more challenging language and completing some innovative tasks. Our Advanced Higher pupils, Emma Mulcahy and Declan Doyle attended a Civic Reception at the City Chambers for those who went to Strasbourg as part of Euroscola in the first term.

Some Higher French pupils preparing for their speaking exams at supported study.

Modern Languages The Modern Languages departmentworked with the Maths department to compete in a cross-curricular competition called ‘Maths sans frontières’ and S5 and S6 pupils had to complete some maths questions in the French language. As many of our S4, S5 and S6 pupils are approaching their SQA exams, Supported Study has been held every week for each subject catering for all levels and languages. Well done to those pupils who have come along and made the most of this opportunity.

Maths News S1 and S2 pupils took part in a sponsored tables event to raise money foe CHILDLINE. This is the third year that we have contributed to this very worthwhile cause. The total of £386.50 was raised and presented by Megan Galt and Alexander Melrose on behalf of all pupils to a CHILDLINE representative at the S2 assembly. WORLD MATHS DAY on March 7th was celebrated by S1 and S2 pupils who competed in 60 second tests against boys and girls from all over the world. Countries competing included Pakistan, Ireland, England, Australia, Malaysia, China, USA. Some of our students were rated as SPEED DEMON, ALMOST EINSTEIN, JUNIOR GIANT and fun was had by all in the maths class. On the 20th March some S5 and S6 maths pupils took part in the National competition Mathématiques sans Frontieres. It involves answering problem solving questions with 2 written in another language. They had to write their answers in another language too. It was enjoyed by all taking part. Results will follow in a few weeks.

The comic club is now running twice a week due to demand of the very committed members. It runs Monday and Wednesday lunchtimes. Ideas are coming thick and fast and we are well on our way to producing some great work. Here is a little taster of things to come… Some of the club were lucky enough to attend a talk at the Mitchell Library on a trip organised by Mr Di Paulo, English dept. They listened to Metaphrog, a Glasgow based duo who produce a very popular series of comics called Louis. The pupils were also given the opportunity to create their own characters, get postcards signed by Metaphrog and borrow some Louis books. Everybody who attended agreed that it was an excellent workshop for budding young comic writers and artists.

Comic Club Fun!

Lourdes Girls' U15 Rowing Team competed for the first time on Saturday 10 March in the Heads of River Race on the River Clyde. I am pleased to say that the girls came second in their category beating Dundee University on the 4km course that truly tested their stamina and strength. This is a fabulous achievement for the girls who have only been rowing together for a few months. Congratulations to Rebecca Running, Marisa Luporini, Katy Gage and Shannon Buckly (S3) and to Melissa Buckly (S4) who coxed the girls along the course.

Britain's Biggest Climate Change Campaign - 12 to 18 March 2012 Climate Week is a national campaign to inspire a new wave of action on climate change, aiming to create a more sustainable, low-carbon future. Climate Week is backed by every part of society - from the Prime Minister to Paul McCartney, the NHS to the Met Office and the TUC to the CBI. Climate Week’s Headline Partner is Tesco, which aims to become a zero-carbon business by 2050 - without purchasing offsets. In addition it has committed to work with its suppliers to reduce emissions from products in its supply chain by 30% by 2020, and to find ways to help its customers halve their own carbon footprints by 2020. Climate Week’s Supporting Partners are EDF Energy, H&M, Nissan and SodaStream. EDF Energy is Britain’s largest producer of low-carbon electricity, H&M is for a more sustainable fashion future, the 100% electric Nissan LEAF is driving change for a sustainable future, and SodaStream is the smarter way to enjoy sparkling drinks. Climate Week Cuisine is a new part of the campaign for 2012, encouraging people to make the food that they eat a part of the solution to climate change. They can do this by joining in the call to action of eating a low carbon meal during Climate Week. A booklet of low - carbon recipes made by celebrity chefs was made available to staff in Lourdes Secondary at a cost of £1. Copies of this will also be available to buy at Parents' Evenings. The Climate Week Pub Quiz, a witty, irreverent and fun look at eco issues was run in hundreds of pubs and workplaces throughout the UK. Teams of staff in Lourdes Secondary took part in the quiz in the Staffroom on Friday 16th March. During PSE classes, in Food for Thought, pupils learned about how reducing food waste can also cut down on food bills as well as our carbon footprint and so help to combat Climate Change. This information also links in to the Food and the Environment topic, one of the Eco Schools areas of study Lourdes Secondary is following for our next Green Flag. The school is a registered member of the POD, an eco scheme backed by EDF Energy – the Lunchtime Crunchtime Take it Home information accompanying this provides advice on how to reduce, reuse and recycle any food waste found at home. This information will not only save the environment, it will also save you money ! This Scottish Government website provides loads of ideas, tips and general information on how we can all help to create a more sustainable Scotland for future generations. www.greenerscotland.org

As a Fairtrade school, a number of activities took place in Lourdes Secondary during Fairtrade Fortnight 2012 : The Human Vending Machine, or Fairtrade Tuck Shop, reappeared at the S2 Parents' Evening and during several lunchtimes, selling a range of chocolate and fruit juice. With the help of members of the Eco School Committee and the Justice & Peace Group, over £130 was raised to help support the producers and their families in Developing Countries; thanks to - Amy Carruthers and Ross Diamond of S1, Erin Ash and Siobhan McClean of S4, Erin Green and Andrew Quinn of S5 and Lee McGowan of S6. All pupils were given the chance to enter a Fairtrade Survey, an exercise previously carried out in 2006. From over 400 entries, the Year Heads randomly drew out one lucky winner from each year group. The following received their Fairtrade chocolate at the Year assemblies: IJ7 Jordan Harte 2J8 Witek Jablonski 3M6 Sarah Leverage 4K11 Shannon McWhinnie 5D Daniel Boyd 6J Shannon Brown

On Thursday 2 March, 100 S4 pupils studying Standard Grade Geography and Modern Studies provide the audience for Molly McGavigan, a retired teacher and a volunteer worker for Rainbow Turtle, the Fairtrade outlet in Paisley. Molly delivered a very informative presentation on her personal experiences from visits to Fairtrade producers in places such as South Africa and Brazil. She left a number of Take A Step foot templates, allowing people to write a pledge supporting Fairtrade - pupils and staff signed these and a wall display was created.

The Fairtrade Big Brew saw over 50 staff enjoy a tea and coffee morning on Friday 9th of March where there were also Fairtrade biscuits and a raffle of Fairtrade products. As a result of this event, a cheque for £150 was sent to SCIAF. In addition, staff had the opportunity to enter a Fairtrade multiple choice quiz - well done to Mrs Leitch, Mrs Pritchard and Mr McMenamin who won some Fairtrade confectionery.

Please remember to consider Fairtrade products when buying goods - there are over 3,500 different things on sale and each purchase does make a positive impact on Third World producers and their families.

Scotland is on course to become a Fairtrade nation later this year, according to External Affairs Secretary Fiona Hyslop. Almost two-thirds of higher education institutions and 171 schools have achieved the standard. All six cities and 14 of the country's 32 councils have Fairtrade status, with only four more local authorities needed for Scotland to become one of the world's first Fairtrade nations. Ms Hyslop said: "It is encouraging to see good progress being made across all walks of life in Scotland, whether that is in our schools, colleges and universities, churches or within central and local government.

"The Scottish government is committed to raising awareness and promoting the Fairtrade agenda throughout Scotland and I am confident that later this year, Scotland will become a Fairtrade nation."

On first ever Music for Youth Festival was held at LourdeMusic for Youth is a charity organisation that enables young people to perform music in a non-competitive environment. It commenced in the 1970’s in England and has now become a yearly event where cities across the country hold Regional Festivals which culminate in the Children’s Music for Youth Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London. This year was the first time that Music for Youth had attempted to set up a series of Festivals in Scotland using Glasgow, Perth and Inverness. Lourdes proudly hosted the first ever Regional Festival in Glasgow. Our wonderful technician Mr Bell created two stages for the performers and GCC videoed the performance. Over 300 pupils were involved in the event from across the city and groups ranged from our local feeder primary school choirs to Jazz Bands, Brass Bands, Steel Pan Bands and many more. Our own school presented a number of Bands on the day and our City Sounds Winners 2012 - The Modests got the day off to a great start. Our Irish Ceilidh Band was superb and the mentors were so impressed with Brigadoon playing their own composition “I Don’t Care”, which went down a storm! The Executive Director of Education, Mrs Maureen McKenna, came to the afternoon session and was delighted with the standard and variety of performances. The event featured in the Saturday edition of The Herald, accompanied by a lovely photograph. At the end of each session, two Music for Youth mentors, Adey Grummet and Gwyn Parry-Jones gave feedback on each of the groups performances and Jennifer Martin, Scottish co-ordinator, wrote to the school after the event and said; “What a fantastic day we all had on Friday! Thank you so much Lourdes for everything you did to make it such a successful event. It really was a special day and I know that all of us, including our colleagues from Creative Scotland, were incredibly impressed with the quality and variety of musicians they heard. What a brilliant start to our work in Scotland! Please pass on my thanks to your pupils and colleagues. They were so supportive, and couldn’t have been more helpful and enthusiastic.” Well done to everyone who helped out.

Friday, 17th February, 2012 the s Secondary School.

Over the last few months, the department has been contributing to the relatively new experience which is “Live at Lourdes”. This is an opportunity for our talented pupils to play in the Dining Hall during lunchtime to a captive audience! Usually performances occur on “special event” days, such as “Hint of Pink”, “St. Andrew’s Day” etc. This month, for the first time, we held a “Live at Lourdes” fundraiser for Yorkhill Hopsital for Sick Kids. Brigadoon and the Irish Ceilidh Band serenaded our pupils throughout lunchtime while collecting money. During lunchtime the pupils raised £250. A few days later they went along to the hospital to play in a concert for the children in hospital and took along Easter Eggs and a donation of £200, which Yorkhill will use to purchase new instruments for the children. Well done to everyone involved!

Basketball Success ! This year we ran four teams in regional and national competitions. The U/14s in their first season reached the Semi Final of the Glasgow Cup and the Quarter Final of the Glasgow League. Well Done Boys ! Keep working on your game and you will improve for next season. The U/15s had a great run in the Scottish Cup. They managed wins against StAndrews Academy in Paisley, St Aloysius College at the Kelvin Hall, St Andrews Sec in Carntyne and Arbroath High School at Bellahouston Sports Centre. They reached the Semie Final at Stirling, but lost to James Gillespie High School of Edinburgh the eventual winners. Again Well Done ! The experience gained will benefit them next season. The U/16s came very close to having a brilliant season but just missed out in the end. They reached the Final of the Glasgow Cup but lost narrowly in the last minute to St Thomas Aquinas Sec. They reached the Semi Final of League Play Off but lost to Hillhead Sec. So near yet so far. Most of the boys are still in S3 and so can, with hard work, have another attempt at winning these trophies next season. The U/18s struggled in the league this year but bravely battled through to the Semi Finals of the Cup where they lost to St Thomas Aquinas. It has been a hard season for the U/18s trying to rebuild a team from after some left last year. As in previous seasons, Taha Cetinkaya in S5, was our outstanding player and repeatedly demonstrated why he was called up to the international squad and played for Scotland in Copenhagen. Congratulations to him and good luck for the future. A BIG THANK YOU must go to our parent coach Mr Donald Macleod and former pupil Sarah Currie, our assistant coach, as without them there would simply be no club. We still have a Youth Games Tournament in May for some S2 and S3 boys but for the others it's down to more practice for next season. It seems that I am beginning to sound like my teacher/coach after all. "The more you practice the luckier you get! " Well done to all the boys who did Lourdes Sec proud with their sportsmanship off and on the court.

Visit to Linburn Academy Linburn Academy is a secondary school for pupils with complex learning needs. This week, they presented their annual school show and we were lucky enough to be a part of the audience. ‘Southside Saga’ tells the story of two opposing gangs in the neighbourhood of Penilee. The play was written by the staff at Linburn Academy and was presented in a creative and innovative way. The school has a total of 47 pupils, only 17 of which were of on stage; however the remaining 30 all contributed to the preparations of the show. The production was a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The audience, including us, enjoyed joining in with the, slightly altered, well-known songs. Well Done, Linburn! Supported Study Supported Study classes have been taking place throughout the year for pupils in S4,5 and 6. Every subject in the school has been represented, providing valuable additional support for our pupils as they prepare for their exams. In addition to the after school classes, we had another hugely successful Study Workshop Day for S4 pupils on Saturday 10th March. Almost 100 pupils in S4 attended a wide range of classes, and feedback from the pupils was extremely positive. During the Easter holiday, we have a very wide range of supported study classes taking place, mostly during the first week of the holidays. We are confident that this additional level of support will be of great value to the pupils in S4,5 and 6.

Your Parent Council needs you!

Lourdes Secondary Parent Council would like to invite parents/guardians who may be interested in joining, as we currently have 3 vacancies. We are working closely with the school Senior Leadership Team to support them in implementing the new Curriculum for Excellence and have been involved and consulted at every stage of its implementation. This is vital not only for our children, but also for the staff. In the past year we have also been involved in several senior leadership appointments, awards ceremonies, the presentation of the school's second Green Flag and many more significant events. It is crucial to the school's continuing success that we, as parents, give our commitment to supporting the school as best we can. At the moment, we are working on creating our own website which will be launched in the near future. If you would like to become a member of the Parent Council and have the opportunity to make a contribution to the future of the school, please contact me via the school office.
