10th Anniversary Celebration April 11-12

YES! It is ten years already! The “new” addition to Grace was dedicated on April 10, 2005.

All three worship services on April 11-12 (Saturday at 5:00; Sunday at 8:30 and 10:45) will celebrate the blessing of our new sanctuary and the addition to Grace. Though just a building, this is a “holy” place. Holiness happens in the emotional experiences of the milestone events of baptisms, funerals, first commun-ions, confirmations, baccalaureates – in moving mu-sic, prayer shawls, conversations with others, worship of God, and deepened faith. The message this day will include pictures of events and happenings over the past ten years. All those born since then, or who have arrived at Grace during those ten years will see how the building looked prior to the addition.

As we continue celebrating Jesus’ resurrection, we will be reminded of, celebrate, and ponder the gifts of gathering, worship, music space, grand piano, screens, an equipped nursery, carport, elevator, and efficient office space.

How are congre-gations developing care for one another, service to the world, and faithfulness to God? Is mission important, and how does Grace’s mission fit with God’s mission? Small group time will strengthen our interaction with Darlene and Pastor Jean as we consider how Grace is doing and where God is leading. Graduation Milestone and Baccalaureate Service—May 17 All high school seniors and their families are invited to attend the Baccalaureate service on Sunday, May 17th, at the 10:45 Service. There will be a reception at 9:45 am, (before the service), with a lunch for the grads and their families to follow (after the service).

Quilts Needed! Please call Margie Welke 715 453-5797 if you can help provide a quilt or two for our graduating seniors. These quilts are deeply appreciated. Most of seniors go on to college, or other interesting places. You could make a wonderful memory for one of our young adults.

Garden Update The calendar says it is time to talk Spring and for a change the weather is cooperating somewhat with the disappearance of the snow, the opening of the river,

and the arrival of migrating waterfowl and snowbirds. We want to remind everyone that plans for the 2015 edition of the Garden of Giving are now in the works. We will be expanding the garden space and are open to any and all suggestions. We will certainly appreciate any input of ideas or materi-als. There will be a needs list posted in the Gathering Area for your review. Plans are also underway to have a brief meeting (we should mention there will be pizza and salad) Weds. evening, April 15th, at 6:00 pm to share thoughts and ideas. If you can join us, please give Deb a call at 715 453-4066. The first seed planting is tentatively scheduled for April 22nd. The Blessing of garden and seeds will be April 25/26. A WORD FROM PASTOR MARK

It’s Easter – Come! Whether old or young, short or tall, in wheelchair, walker or able – come! Whether tired or enthusiastic, happy or depressed, on chemo, many meds, or great health – come! Whether poor or rich, busy or bored, focused on fun, work, family or just surviving – come! Whether your relationship with God is deeply faithful, nonexistent, angry, con-fused, or strongly seeking – come! Easter is a celebration for every human. We will all die. All of us will grieve deeply. We get lost, devastated, confused, and overwhelmed. We all make mistakes in life and relationships, with God, others and with our choices. We all need more than just help. We need saving.

At Easter we celebrate and receive that saving! Alleluia! In words we hear, speak and sing – we celebrate and receive! In bread and wine we eat our Savior’s real forgiveness, resurrection, and eternal life! Easter is the gift and celebration of hope, certainty, and love that saves us in every struggle, enriches every moment, and is for all eternity:

Hope – for God took on sin, death, evil, brokenness and defeat-ed them. Not just wishful, good-morning hope. This is deep hope! Jesus took on God-forsaken, terrorist-inflicted, take-you-to-hell, throwing-everything-at-you deepest evil, sin, and death and even Satan himself. And Jesus lives! In place of sin this Resurrected Jesus offers forgiveness! Instead of death, our Living Lord offers resurrection and eternal life! When we face the worst of evil this Crucified Christ gives us unvan-quished love! And, when Satan himself seems to be personally attacking us, God seems to not hear our prayers, and our mind, emotions and/or body are stuck in torment, we now have the Spirit of our Healing Savior ready to carry us.

Certainty – for both the cross and the tomb are empty. Jesus is an historical figure, a real human, who has no grave. But be careful; don’t water down this certainty! This is not a certainty that one can buy, own, earn, or abstractly grasp. It is much greater than historical fact or information or understanding. It is a certainty that only has significance when it grasps us, when we are bought and owned by Jesus and by what He has earned for us. For this is not the mere certainty that His grave is empty; this is the personal certainty for every single one of us - your life has meaning! God is intimately involved in you! Nothing, not death, not even the most sudden, unexpected, too-young-to-die death can separate us from God! In every living moment, in every death, and in the eternity of the future – God is there for our good! Oh, be careful again – as hu-mans we often do not see God’s goodness, but it is there working in you and for you – let that certainty seize you!

Love – for Jesus not only died for you, Jesus also rose for you – to be living love in you! Too often we miss this reality. God not only loves you, but God also longs to be love in each of us! On the cross Jesus both showed and also proved His love for us. Now in His resurrection our Living Lord of Love makes this same love available to be alive in us. Jesus rose for our sake. He rose to be alive in us, and life, real life is when we love. This is much more than emotional love. Jesus offers de-termined, reconciling, healing, community-building love.

So come! Come desperate to receive that which nothing else in life can give us. Come, knowing there is no deserving, on in-group, no correct ritual or action. Come to receive hope, certainty, and love that will save you, that will fill you, that will enrich every moment, get you through devastating times, and carry you into eternity!

The Philippines Story continued: This final chapter has a beginning but no end yet… Over the last several months you have been introduced to all seven of “my children” from the orphanages in Manila, Philippines. I hope that you have come to know a bit about each of them and that they have captured you in some small way. Please continue to think about these children and pray for them… each one. The orphanages in the Philippines are overflowing with children who want forever families and our prayers are so important to them. Church Ladies’ Diner Reopens April 11 & 12! It’s almost time for the Church Ladies’ Diner at the annual WJJQ Home, Sport and Travel Show. In the past, proceeds from the Diner have totaled more than $25,000 for missions in South Africa, the Congo, Guate-mala, and Appalachia, as well as helping to reduce Grace’s mortgage debt. This year’s proceeds will go to Lekubu’s Creche, Education & More, and the Building Debt. (Each will receive one third of the proceeds.)

This has been possible only through the tremendous support of the people of Grace Lutheran Church. It has tru-ly been a team effort. This year, we are again asking for your help. There are many ways to get involved. Sign-up sheets are available in the Gathering Area listing the kinds of help needed. Thank you for your participation in this mission. Don’t forget to come to the Diner and have one of Margie’s famous hot beef sandwiches!

RECIEPTS AND REIMBURSEMENTS I have been advised by the audit committee to follow the ELCA recommendations regarding reimbursing individuals for purchases made for the church. Going forward our policy will be “no receipt, no reimbursement.” Please keep this in mind if you have made a purchase for which you wish to be reimbursed. I will have brown envelopes in my mailbox for the receipts. Please make sure to write your name, amount to be reimbursed and what committee/group should be charged.

Thrivent Action Team Grant

Thanks to $250 in grant money from Thrivent plus two donations from Grace members, vertical blinds were installed on windows in the lower level of our church. Project coordinator, Corky Burcalow, thanks the following folks for helping with this project: Julie Dentler, John Pashek, Dar Clements, Bill Strand, Jim Van Norman, and Jerry Jagmin.

April Special Offering East Central Synod Assembly Your monetary donations (offering envelopes) will contribute to the Assembly Offerings as follows: fifty percent will go to Congregations (including Renewing Congregations, ELCA New Congregations, and Disa-bility Ministries). This is part of the Always Being Made New: The Campaign for the ELCA. The other fifty percent will go to the Bishop’s Resource Fund which assists rostered staff with such needs as indi-vidual and family counseling, un-covered medical ex-penses, and other emergency needs.

Crossways Camping Ministries God has blessed our synod with the gift of Crossways Camping Ministries. Imago Dei Village in Clinton-ville, Pine Lake in Waupaca, and Waypost on Mission Lake in Hatley are rich resources where people of all ages find community, restoration, and faith for-mation. At this year’s Synod Assembly the focus will be to support Crossways Camping Ministries through supplies and intentional support. Crossways Camp has carefully compiled a list of items needed for the coming year. The list for our branch of the synod in-cludes Kitchen and Cleaning Supplies. For ex-ample, paper towels, dish towels, coffee dish soap, coffee, large food storage containers, Windex, and brooms. An appropriately labeled collection contain-er will be set up in the gathering area. We will deliver the goods to the Synod Assembly on May 14th. Please drop off all items by May 13th. Questions? From the Stewardship Committee

The Rest of the Story For many people, one of the best and most entertaining spots on the radio years ago was Paul Harvey’s “The Rest of the Story.” During these three- or four-minute broad-casts, Mr. Harvey would tell his audience a story or share some interesting information that was followed by his saying, “Stay tuned for the rest of the story.” Following a commercial break, his story would be embellished by some previously unknown information or facts that brought new meaning, significance, or relevance to the story.

It is very likely that Paul Harvey never used the Bible to find his stories, but we can see how he could have used Joseph of Arimathea. In Matthew 27:57-60 we read, “When it was evening, there came a rich man from Ari-mathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud and laid it in his own new tomb which he had cut in the rock.” In Scripture, there are many examples of people who give generously to the Lord from their hearts, and this is one of those wonderful accounts. Whether Joseph had carved the burial tomb himself or had contracted someone else to do it, the grave would have come at great expense. However, as a follower of Jesus, he saw the wonderful opportunity to serve the Lord by offering his burial tomb so Jesus’ body could be properly buried. This great act of love, faith, and generosity placed Joseph’s life in danger, because the Jews not only wanted Jesus dead, they want-ed to eliminate all of Jesus’ disciples. Joseph, being a Jew and a member of the Sanhedrin, was possibly at greater risk than other followers of Jesus.

If he had considered the account of Joseph of Arimathea, Paul Harvey would have had a great rest of the story. He could have told his listeners how Joseph, with great cour-age, gave an outrageous gift by offering his own personal burial place to Jesus. Yet another story within this story is how God gives and keeps on giving through the gener-ous hearts of His people. As people of faith, we under-stand that we can never out give God. God continually blesses us spiritually and, at times, even materially. In Luke 6:38, Jesus promises that if we “give…it will be giv-en to [us.]” Our primary motive for giving is not to be blessed; nevertheless, God promises blessings to those who give faithfully and generously. Paul Harvey’s rest of the story would have been that, within three days, Jesus returned Joseph of Arimathea’s burial plot! After Jesus’ resurrection, He had no need for a tomb. Joseph not only received the joy of knowing his Savior had used his per-sonal tomb, he was blessed with joy knowing he had act-ed faithfully. That joy was all surely Joseph needed and wanted, but now, when his life ended, his body would be placed in the tomb once occupied by his Savior. God blesses each of us with many gifts, talents, and bless-ings we can use to further God’s kingdom and to help oth-ers. May God grant us the same faith He gave to Joseph of Arimathea, so we can serve and give faithfully and gen-erously.

Grace Lutheran Council March Meeting Minutes Date: March 12, 2015

Meeting called to order at 6:06 pm by Brian Schmidt. Council in attendance: Brian Schmidt, Forrest Gibeault, Sandy Wick, Mark Schlegel, Marilyn Smith, Ken Kincaid, Lucas Tjugum Missing: Bill Zorr, Luann Kiander, Abrina Leonard, Mary Wessel Other Attendees: Pastor Mark Ziemer, Sherry Clements Devotions Brian shared with us pictures of the pope blessing disfigured persons and how that relates to our relationship with God that he may see us as disfigured and he made us clean. Where have we seen God at work? (note: not just at Grace) Brian - Kids at St Mary’s saying the pledge, Sandy - seeing both the beautiful caves and ice formations as well as seeing families laughing and enjoying the beauti-ful day at Apostle Island Approve Agenda Mark moved to approve the agenda, Ken seconded and approved. Motion carried. Financial Report Sherry added a comparison year to date. The council had indicated at the annual meeting we needed to increase 13% from last year giving so on track to meet that. Based upon January and February giving, we have increased 12.885 % from last year at this time. Sherry indicated she has put in the bulletin the increase of $7,000+ from last year to create awareness. Discussed that council members would also share the good news at the various services. Forrest will do a quick an-nouncement at this Sunday 8:30 service and Marilyn will do this for 10:45. Brian indicated it would be nice to tell this in the upcoming services. Mark moved to approve the treasurer report. Ken seconded. Motion carried. Consent Agenda Mark moved to amend the consent agenda to add the removal of membership of Laurie and Steve Mitchell due to them moving to Sheboygan. Second by Forest. Unanimously carried. Discussed there are a lot of ‘none’ reports from the committees. Council does not know if this means the committees are not meeting or not just doing the reports. Mark looked in the constitution and it lists the committees, but does not list as their responsibility the creation of reports. We will keep an eye on this for upcoming meetings. Sherry will also do a follow-up with Debbie on Stewardship report as she thought there was one. Mark moved and seconded by Ken to approve the consent agent. Approved and motion carried. Committee and staff reports Pastor Mark reported and highlighted some of the following items:

• Pastor Mark reported that the 10th anniversary meeting is being held next Monday and they have decided to keep it light and to focus on the celebration

• Since 5 new people came on council, he listed out the items he has been doing since January as part of the pas-tor’s role in his report. It has been a very busy time since January

• Pointed out how great it is to see the Pope and all he is doing. Pastor Mark will meet with Father John at St. Mary’s in further discussions on this.

• Described how the Rescue Mission and Sisters House are different and not in competition with one anoth-

er. Rescue Mission board meets at Grace

Motion was made by Marilyn to accept the staff report and seconded by Forrest. Motion carried. Old Business 1. Template for Policy creation (Forrest)

• After a lot of research of various templates, Forrest created a template for a policy and this was reviewed during

this meeting

• A copy of the current policies should be kept in the Council binder.

• Discussed oversight of policy. Should go to a committee to be reviewed and approved by that committee before

it comes to council for final approval

• Governance task force should review template created as this is part of their committee.

• Next steps: Forrest will revise to include required sections and send to governance task force for review. 2. Review of custodian budget and hours. Has Dar been informed of her budget? (Head of Staff - Pastor Mark)

• Pastor Mark informed Dar of the reduction of the hours so she is now aware of this.

• More hours are being worked now due to the winter traffic, but she foresees less hours later 3. Custodian duties and expectations. Do we want B&G to start creating a guideline as what needs to be accom-

plished on a weekly/monthly basis? (Brian) • Issues: Reduced budget in 2015 and cleaning issues with the building

• Next steps: Ken should bring forward to building and grounds committee to review the descriptions from 2011

that were started. 4. Creation of Finance committee What is it that the council expects of this taskforce if it were created? (Brian)

• Mark looked in constitution and noted it calls for a budget committee which can work with a finance commit-

tee.

• Next steps: Ken will do research and bring back to the group at next meeting the responsibilities of a finance

committee 5. SCRIP (Sandy)

• Sandy handed out some research she did on scrip and this was discussed

• Nationwide as well as a local scrip program could be created

• Sandy indicated her husband would be a coordinator that would help with this program

• After review, Mark indicated for the local program we should contact St Mary’s to see how they run their pro-

gram as it is very successful and since we are a smaller community we want to do as much locally as possible

• Responsibilities indicate that they would meet at least twice a year and to make sure positions are accurate and

personnel evaluations are done

• Constitution indicates council should appoint members for this so council will contact potential members

• Next steps: Mark will contact potential members to see if they would be willing to serve on this committee.

• Sherry also brought up that several positions were not filled from the annual meeting and council needs to look

at assigning/ finding other positions as noted below

• Based upon information from John Pashek in an email to Brian: o Building needs to have a yearly fire system inspection due to insurance reasons.

o Also need a quarterly fire inspection. - requires training, but can do internally. Cost $425 for training which is what it would cost for 1 external fire quarterly inspection.

o Received 2 quotes for annual inspection. Recommendation to go with Firepro who is from Stevens Point Cost - $,1000.00 annually

o Volunteer fire department would not qualify for yearly inspection • Mark made a motion to approve $1,000 for John to move forward to contact Firepro. • Next steps: Ken will contact John and let him know to move forward with $1,000.00 as well as to expand the

search for someone to do this internally for the quarterly 7. Problems with Grace House sewer (John)

• Based upon information from John in an email: • Had to rooter root as sewer clogged up.This has been taken care of • Next steps: Ken will contact John to touch base with him to get more information on what the issue exactly

was and then pass this information to the task force assigned to look at Grace House as part of their evaluation.

o Lynn Wurl from the Wilderness group contacted Sandy regarding helping out council at Easter Break-fast. Sandy and Brian clarified that Easter Breakfast was not going to be organized by council, but that council members would be willing to serve if needed. .

• Church Mutual -

o Brian received a letter from Church Mutual indicating they will no longer include terrorism insurance unless it is paid for separately

o Brian will move forward and sign to reject Terrorism coverage Closed Session

• Pastor Mark passed around the staff development plans. • Council should review and bring comments to next council meeting.

Wilderness—July 24-August 1 April 1 is the deadline as reservations need to be made. Consider and act on this! There are three choices:

• OWLs: led by Pastor Check – tour Yellowstone Park & sleep in a bed at night

• Base camp: led by Ron Wilson – camp near 9th Grade group and fish, day hike, relax

• Combination: 1-2 days to sightsee and shop & 1-2 days in wilderness with the group above Three new features this year:

1. VEHICLES: carpooling with personal vehicles (or rented van) will make this more affordable

2. ROUTE & PACE: interesting stops will slow the pace (safety) and provide time to interact (cross+generational)

a. Going out I-94 (North Dakota) – only one long day (July 25) with 24th & 26th as short drives

b. Return I-90 (South Dakota) – interesting stops to slow the pace and give time to interact 3. DESTINATION: able to drive close to spectacular scenery to avoid long hikes

a. Yellowstone – offers great scenery, much variety within a short walk b. Lake Plateau – hike in and out is very manageable with super base camp – great fishing or day hikes

All the above include the four keys of 1) caring conversation, 2) devotions, 3) service (shared planning), and 4) ritual. Renewing the total person – body, mind, spirit, and relationships - is the goal. When it is over you’ll have not just a host of pictures, but many new friendships with whom to share the memories forever.

Crossways Camp All registration at this time is directly through Crossways at www.crosswayscamps.org. Crossways has three campsites; each site has ten weeks of programming; each week has multiple programs. GrandparentKids and Family programs are very well received - check them out. Twenty-one children and youth from Grace are attend-ing Waypost Week, July 5-10!

Next Via de Cristo weekend – November 5-8 Ask Shirley Derleth, Lisa Elliott, and Carol Mueller about their first-time experience at Via de Cristo March 12-15. Those who served that weekend were Mark Gaedtke, Carey Heikkinen, Dan and Claudia Osero, and Pastor Nicole Welke. “Via de Cristo” is the Lutheran version of the 70 year old tradition of “cursillo” founded in Majorca, Spain by a group of laymen in 1944. There is a different name for this same “cursillo” format in each Christian denomi-nation. There are forty-four “Lutheran” Via de Cristo organizations in the United States and many more through-out the world. The Spring weekend is in March and the Fall weekend will be November 5-8. The Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg, a close affiliate of the Lutheran World Federation, has just launched the Luther Reading Challenge.
