What is CAREN?
! EC-funded project to establish high-capacity R&E network in Central Asia ! Beneficiary countries/NRENs:
– Kazakhstan – KazRENA – Kyrgyzstan – KRENA – Tajikistan – TARENA – Turkmenistan – TURENA – Uzbekistan -
! Aims terrestrial fibre connection (34 or 155 Mbps for each CA country)
! Will serve 1 million users at over 200 universities and research institutes in the region
! With direct link to GÉANT, CAREN will provide Central Asia with a gateway to global collaborations in R&E

The Central Asian Research and Education Network
ELEVATE – E-Learning Variations for Transition Economies. Its goal is to use e-learning tools to assist in solving transitional justice issues in Central Asia , by making the connections between the rule of law and sustainable development. CAREN management team and CA NRENs expressed interest to implement “rule of Law education” as non-classical application for CAREN at CAREN ExCo –meeting in Dushanbe, March 11-12,2011. CAREN could provide network infrastructure with high-speed channels and technical support for implementation of Programme Elevate.

Conclusions
! CAREN network is established and operate ! The new POP at Frankfurt was established ! The new circuits to Dushanbe and Bishkek are operational ! The CAREN network service is up and running: 1. CAREN provides managed IP service for the participating NREN-s 2. NOC is continuously monitoring the network, external monitoring too 3. Available 7*24, attended 5+*24 4. Portal for general communication 5. Monthly Sevice reports
! Main open question is how to improve network resiliency ! CAREN network is IPv6 ready ! Further steps :
! Upgrading KRENA to 155Mbps from January 2012 ! Connecting Kazrena at 155Mbps from January 2012
