In July 2014, APA Group (APA) entered into two long term gas transportation agreements with AngloGold Ashanti Australia Limited (AngloGold) for the transportation of gas from Yarraloola in the north-west of Western Australia to AngloGold’s Sunrise Dam and Tropicana gold mining operations in the Eastern Goldfields region.

The agreements underpinned the construction of the new Eastern Goldfields Pipeline (EGP) to connect AngloGold’s mines to APA’s existing pipelines, the Goldfields Gas Pipeline (GGP) and the Murrin Murrin Lateral (MML). The 293km, 8” (219 mm) buried carbon steel pipeline now extends the Goldfields gas system network to almost 1,800km in length.

The EGP provides access to a continuous supply of natural gas for local power generation – reducing the reliance on diesel fuel and LNG transported by road.

The EGP provides access to a continuous supply of natural gas, opening up new opportunities for the Eastern Goldfields region.

A MESSAGE FROM...

Mick McCormack Managing Director APA GroupThrough developing the Eastern Goldfields Pipeline we have not only extended the reach and benefits of our Western Australian grid to help develop the region but also developed new relationships. And working with AngloGold Ashanti, the Department of Mines and Petroleum and all the project stakeholders has been a truly cooperative and rewarding experience.

Clearly, a project like this involves many stakeholders. We thank our industry contractors and suppliers for their contribution. We also thank the Western Australian Government and the various government agencies for their support. And importantly, a development project like this simply couldn’t succeed without the support from the communities along the pipeline route – thank you.

Now built, this pipeline connects the region to a more reliable and cleaner source of energy. It will help promote new business and growth, and we are pleased to be a part of that in our role as the pipeline developer and ongoing transporter of energy for the region.

6

Page 9: Eastern Goldfields Pipeline Book

Mike Erickson Senior VP AngloGold Ashanti Australia LtdThe safe and timely completion of the Eastern Goldfields Pipeline represents the start of a new era for AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd’s operations. The gas delivered to the Sunrise Dam (100%) and Tropicana (AngloGold Ashanti 70% and manager, Independence Group NL 30%) Gold Mines by the EGP will fuel power generation at both sites, reducing exposure to diesel price volatility.

The pipeline will provide far greater continuity of fuel supply and significantly reduce the number of trucks on the gravel roads leading to our remote sites. The EGP also represents an important addition to the infrastructure of the state of Western Australia, potentially enabling future mining operations access to natural gas. The constructive, collaborative relationship between AngloGold Ashanti and APA and its subcontractors enabled the EGP to be constructed in a manner that respected the heritage of traditional landowners and the environment.

This relationship was recognised when the Spiecapag Lucas joint venture won the APGA 2015 Environment Award for its Front Foot Package, which incorporated AngloGold Ashanti’s threatened fauna management strategy and guidelines on fauna handling developed by AngloGold Ashanti during the approvals process for the Tropicana Gold Mine. AngloGold Ashanti is pleased to have been involved in this successful project and we look forward to enjoying the benefits of the natural gas the EGP will deliver to our operations.

Rob Wheals Group Executive Transmission APA GroupWe always welcome the opportunity to extend the reach of our infrastructure to bring the benefits of natural gas to new customers and regions. In this case, the experience has been enhanced by the high level of involvement and collaboration with AngloGold Ashanti.

A key plank of our growth strategy has always been customer-led growth. The EGP is a tangible demonstration of how we grow our business by meeting the needs of our customers. And projects like these, in remote areas, are what APA is very good at.

The Western Australian Government has described development of the pipeline as a ‘game-changer’ for the area, and we also see significant opportunity to support further mining development in the future.

I congratulate everyone involved and welcome AngloGold as a customer and look forward to continuing to work together in the future.

GOLDFIELDS-ESPERANCE REGIONThe Goldfields-Esperance Region is located in the south eastern corner of Western Australia. It covers 770,488 sq km (including some offshore islands) and is the largest of the state’s mining regions. Mining is the predominant sector in the central and northern parts of the region, with a well-established agricultural sector in the south.

There are approximately 100 mines operating in the area. Gold, nickel and uranium are the main resources found in the region. Historically, most of the energy required to operate these mines has been by diesel, trucked hundreds of kilometres on unsealed roads through very diverse terrain. The development of the EGP will help to reduce this.

8

Page 11: Eastern Goldfields Pipeline Book

On average, it takes more than a tonne of ore to produce just 0.1 to 0.5 ounces of gold. This is why producing this precious resource requires a safe, reliable and long-term energy supply. The EGP provides a natural gas solution that allows the eastern goldfields mining region to achieve this.

9

Page 12: Eastern Goldfields Pipeline Book

GAS AS A LONG-TERM, SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONThe EGP delivers gas from offshore fields off Western Australia’s Pilbara coast to AngloGold’s Sunrise Dam and Tropicana mines. It provides local power generation, reducing the reliance on diesel fuel and LNG transported by road. The Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, located 55km south of Laverton, has provided an important foundation for AngloGold in Australia since it began production in June 1997. Since then, the world class ore body has produced more than six million ounces of gold. Tropicana, which is 70 per cent owned and managed by AngloGold and 30 per cent owned by Independence Group NL, is located 330km east-northeast of Kalgoorlie-Boulder on the western edge of Western Australia’s Great Victoria Desert. In November 2015, the mine celebrated one million ounces produced since pouring its first gold in September 2013.

WORKING TOGETHERThe Project Control Group was formed with representation from both AngloGold and APA to provide project governance.

“ The Project Control Group was a great way for the interactions between AngloGold and APA to be formalised. By getting the decision makers around the table regularly, actions could be taken rapidly to prevent emerging issues from escalating and becoming problems. The common goal of getting the pipeline built safely and efficiently with the minimum of disturbance to the mining operations was met.”

A lot of detail and study went into finding the appropriate route for the pipeline, so as to minimise disturbance to existing landholders and the environment. Helicopter and land surveys of the favoured routes were undertaken to refine the best option. Baseline surveys were then conducted to determine the preferred pipeline alignment.

13

Page 16: Eastern Goldfields Pipeline Book

GETTING THE OKAYWorking under a ‘lead agency’ process, the EGP project team engaged with four divisions of the Western Australia Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) to ensure compliance across all environment and safety requirements.

APA’s project team worked closely with AngloGold, government departments, consultants and the local community to get the green light for construction.

Having various licence applications in place for the tenure, APA and AngloGold aligned to prepare the environmental documentation that was required to satisfy both the Petroleum and Minerals divisions of the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP).

“ This pipeline is a significant piece of infrastructure for the state, which will provide a number of economic benefits and future energy supply to the remote region.”

“The process of gaining all the approvals required a lot of coordination and groundwork. We had to ensure that the stringent requirements for all of the pipeline approvals were met. With each one achieved it was one step closer to obtaining Consent to Construct. We were very fortunate that the divisions of the DMP worked with us to ensure we were ready for the construction phase on time. A ‘Woot Woot’ could be heard each time a milestone was achieved. Teamwork was the key for success.”

PROTECTING THREATENED SPECIESAs part of developing our Construction Environmental Plan and Native Vegetation Clearing Permit requirements, we outlined our management measures to ensure the endangered and vulnerable species in the region were protected.

In association with specialists Kingfisher Environmental Consulting and Botanica Consulting, management measures were tailored to the region and specific species to ensure the pipeline was constructed with minimal impact on threatened flora and fauna individuals as well as their habitat.

This included reduced clearing, more frequent trench inspections and targeted survey and monitoring of the endangered Sandhill Dunnart. This program resulted in the first successful monitoring of the Dunnart within the Great Victorian Desert bioregion. It provided critical information on their foraging and nesting activities, leading to improvements in national management of this species.

16

Page 19: Eastern Goldfields Pipeline Book

CULTURAL HERITAGEThe EGP is located in the traditional lands of the Wongatha and Tjuntjuntjara (Spinifex) People. We worked closely with these communities to undertake heritage clearance/ethnographic surveys ahead of the pipeline laydown work. Elders, Aubrey Lynch (pictured right) and Bruce Smith (pictured left) worked with APA’s clearing crews to coordinate heritage monitoring teams during the first clearing works.

The Wongatha people have historical connections in a general region that borders the biogeographic regions of Coolgardie, South-East Wiluna and the western half of the Great Victoria Desert. The Tjuntjuntjara identify as belonging to a group of people known as Pila Nguru (meaning ‘from the spinifex plains’) whose homelands are in Western Australia’s Great Victoria Desert.

HOW MUCH PIPE?

18

Page 21: Eastern Goldfields Pipeline Book

“Approximately 16,700, 18m lengths of line pipe was manufactured in China and transported in three separate shipments to the Port of Fremantle. The line pipe was then transported by rail to Kalgoorlie, then by road-train to one of the three laydown areas located along the pipeline route at Granny Smith, Sunrise Dam and Tropicana mine sites. It was a fantastic team achievement to complete the laydown of the line pipe over 50 days with over 300,000km travelled by road without a significant safety incident”

Barrie Sturgeon, Project Director, APA

19

Page 22: Eastern Goldfields Pipeline Book

“ The remote construction location provided some unique logistical challenges, including the transportation of the line pipe, accommodation units and construction plant and equipment to the multiple laydown areas in the Eastern Goldfields region.”

A PLACE TO CALL HOME“The crew stayed in four different camps all along the pipeline route – Boomers Camp in Laverton, Sunrise Dam mine site accommodation village, a temporary fly camp midway between Sunrise Dam and Tropicana, and the Tropicana mine site accommodation village.

The people of Laverton were very accommodating when 200-plus people turned up in the town to live during construction. They made room for the crew at special events like the Anzac Day memorial service and the annual race-day.”

Daniel Wallace, Project Manager, APA

22

Page 25: Eastern Goldfields Pipeline Book

“To minimise the amount of driving on unsealed roads – one of the Project’s biggest risks – a 180-room fly camp was set up midway between Sunrise Dam and Tropicana. The camp provider and catering staff did a tremendous job to ensure that there were amenities to meet everyone’s requirements and make ‘the fly’ feel like home. In fact it was said many times on the Project that the fly camp meals were as good as you’ll find anywhere.”

Daniel Wallace, Project Manager, APA

23

GETTING THERE SAFELY “We travelled over 1.5 million km during the project. It was vital to ensure everyone had the knowledge, ability and engagement around driver safety.”

“ Recent pipeline projects all over the country have recognised the importance of an In Vehicle Monitoring System (IVMS) to safety while driving in remote and often harsh conditions, which the EGP team considered a project imperative. Our IVMS not only had the ability to locate vehicles in distress, which is vital on a project which has a spread of over 300kms, but also served to encourage good driver behaviours.”

CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

CLEAR & GRADE STRINGING WELDING COATING

The process begins with the pipeline route being surveyed and staked to ensure the boundaries of the work area are clearly defined. The ground is then cleared of vegetation which is stockpiled to the edge of the right of way. Following the clearing of the vegetation, the right of way is graded and the topsoil is stripped and stockpiled separately so it can also be used for reinstatement and rehabilitation at a later stage.

Average daily production achieved: 4.4km

Sawdust bags and wooden gluts are then laid out in preparation for the lengths of pipe to be strung on. The pipe is transported from the nearest laydown yard to the right of way via trucks. Vacuum lifts are used to unload and place the pipe on the wooden gluts and sawdust bags. The pipeline is strung out in sections suitable to allow for fauna crossings and to align with tie-in locations. If there are any field bends to be completed, this is included in the stringing process.

Average daily production achieved: 5.3km

The pipe lengths are then welded together to form strings. Each string is approximately 1.5km in length. As the welds are completed they are tested to ensure the weld has passed compliance. This is called Non-destructive testing (NDT).

Average daily production achieved: 5.5km or 302 joints per day

Once the joints are welded together the welded joints are coated. On occasions, there may be some coating damage that has occurred during the transportation and handling of the pipe. The coating is inspected and any identified repairs are completed in the field using an epoxy application similar to that used for the welded joint coating.

Average daily production achieved: 4.5km or 253 joints

28

Page 31: Eastern Goldfields Pipeline Book

TRENCHING LOWERING BACKFILLING REINSTATEMENT

The trench is excavated using a bucket wheel trencher, rock saw or excavator depending on the soil conditions. The trench is nominally 1.2m deep and 600mm wide with a ‘bell-hole’ excavated at the tie-in locations. Approximately 70km of the total 293km route required rock-saw excavation to remove the rock from the trench. Of the 70km, 1km of ‘drill and blast’ methodology was required for the more stubborn areas. The trench is then padded with suitable material to protect the pipe once lowered.

Average daily production achieved: 4.7km

Prior to lowering the pipe strings into the trench, the coating integrity is required to be checked again. This is done by use of a ‘Holiday Test’ commonly known as ‘Jeeping’. This involves applying a low voltage across the coated pipe to detect any unacceptable discontinuities – such as pinholes or voids. Each string of pipe is then lowered into the trench using side-booms strategically positioned to support the pipe to minimise flexing. Care is taken to maintain pipeline integrity and avoid coating damage.

Average daily production achieved: 5.5km

‘Shading’ (fine-grained, clean fill material) is placed over the lowered pipe to again protect the coating during the backfill operation. The trench is then backfilled with the material that has essentially come out of the trench. The trench is then compacted and a rough grade completed. To check for any leaks, the pipeline is filled with water and tested under pressure, this process is called hydrostatic testing.

Average daily production achieved: 5.4km

Once the hydrostatic testing of the pipeline has confirmed no leaks, the right of way is reinstated with the topsoil and vegetation that was separated at the clear and grade stage. This process ensures that the regrowth of the right of way gets the best chance of rehabilitation to its natural state.

Average daily production achieved: 5.5km

“ Right from the start this project was a great experience for Spiecapag Lucas. We mobilised a team in Perth in December 2014 to carry out preparatory and planning works together with the APA team. The APA and Spiecapag Lucas teams gelled right from the start and worked with the single goal of delivering the project in a world class fashion. Approvals and interfaces were expertly managed by APA and that gave us a clear run at the project once we mobilised on site in February and ensured we started construction as scheduled in March 2015.

Progress went better than expected which was a win for all of us and as a result we delivered the project to APA two months early with a world class safety, environmental and quality performance. This was a great example of how a project team is meant to operate, there was mutual respect, a high level of expertise on both sides and great camaraderie out on site.”

John Walsh, Project Director, Spiecapag Lucas

41

Page 44: Eastern Goldfields Pipeline Book

ABOVE GROUND“ There were many challenges, but the most demanding for the construction of above-ground facilities was the vast distances that needed to be covered to ensure suitable contractor supervision and construction quality was delivered at multiple sites along the length of the pipeline.

The efforts of many “behind the scenes” people helped meet the challenge, especially through very good administrative management of accommodation, rosters, airfares and vehicle logistics, along with the continued fostering of sound client and contractor relationships. A big thanks to all those off-site who made a very difficult task on-site a lot easier.”

A MESSAGE FROM...

Kevin Lester Group Executive Infrastructure Development, APACongratulations to the team and all involved in the successful delivery of the Eastern Goldfields Pipeline project. AngloGold Ashanti’s Sunrise Dam mine site was capable of receiving natural gas seven weeks ahead of schedule, and the Tropicana mine, three weeks ahead. This is a credit to the way the APA team worked in a collaborative and very pro-active manner with the Government of Western Australian and in particular the Department of Mines and Petroleum, AngloGold Ashanti and our main contractors.

The most important milestone achieved on the project was that the pipeline was delivered safely. While handling approximately 16,700 lengths of 18-metre line pipes, expending around 400,000 man-hours and driving a collective 1.5 million kilometres, the project recorded no lost-time injuries, resulting in everyone returning home safely to their loved ones. Working together, with the key goal of safety, the team delivered an outcome that makes me, and should make us all, very proud indeed.
