BELMONT’S HOME STREAK SNAPPED! EKU defeated Belmont, 88-78, on Feb. 6 at the Curb Event Center, handing the Bruins their first-ever OVC home loss since they joined the league in 2012-13. It was the nation’s longest home conference win streak.

POWELL THE KEY? Senior Ja’Mill Powell made his second straight start vs. TSU and responded with 10 points, six rebounds and three assists. The Colonels are 4-0 this sea-son when Powell scores in double figures.

COLONELS DIAL IN FROM LONG RANGE EKU shot a season-high 64 percent (14-of-22) from three-point range vs. the Tigers. The perfor-mance comes five days after the Colonels shot a season-low 5 percent (1-of-17) from long range vs. Morehead State on Jan. 30.

HAWKINS GOES OFF FOR 36 Junior JaVontae Hawkins poured in a career high 36 points vs. Tennessee State on Feb. 4. He knocked down a career high six three-pointers.

OVC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK #6 Nick Mayo was voted the OVC Freshman of the Week for the sixth time on Jan. 18. He averaged 25.5 ppg and shot 73% from the field in two road games at EIU and SIUE. Mayo currently ranks fourth in the OVC in scoring during league play (17.6 ppg).

23 FOR MAYO Freshman Nick Mayo poured in a career-high 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field in the loss at Eastern Illinois on Jan. 14. Mayo leads all freshmen in the OVC in scoring (12.9 ppg) and field goal percentage (59.4).

DEFENSIVE IMPROVEMENT EKU was allowing 82.5 points-per-game to its opponents before Christmas. In the four games since Christmas, the Colonels have allowed only 70.2 points-per-game.

MAYO’S 5TH OVC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK Freshman Nick Mayo was voted the OVC Freshman of the Week for the fifth time on Jan. 11. Mayo scored 15 points and posted career highs in rebounds (7) and blocks (3) vs. Southeast Missouri.

HE SCORES IN BUNCHES Junior Jaylen Babb-Harrison came off the bench and scored 14 points in a span of four minutes in the second half to help EKU pull away from Southeast Missouri, 88-69, on Jan. 9. He finished with a season-high 18 points.

MCGLONE STEPS UP With guards Paul Jackson and Dujuanta Weaver not playing, junior Isaac McGlone played a ca-reer-high 39 minutes vs. UT Martin and recorded season-highs in points (13), rebounds (4) and three-point field goals (4).

COLONELS MISFIRE FROM DEEP EKU shot a season-low 22.6 percent (7-of-31) from three-point range in the loss to UT Martin on January 7. The Colonels entered the game as the top three-point shooting team in the OVC.

SEEKING PAYBACK UT Martin ended EKU’s season in 2015 when Marshun Newell hit a three-pointer with 3.3 seconds on the clock to give the Skyhawks a 70-69 win over the Colonels in the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament on March 25 at McBrayer Arena.

SECOND DOUBLE-DOUBLE OF THE YEAR Sophomore Paul Jackson notched his second double-double of the year vs. Murray State on Jan. 27 (10 points, 10 assists). As of Jan. 29, he leads the conference at 7.7 apg during OVC play.

JACKSON MATCHES CAREER HIGH Sophomore Paul Jackson matched a career high with 14 points on Thursday. He knocked down a career best four three-pointers in the loss. Jackson also dished out seven assists vs. Eastern Illinois. He is averaging 7.3 assists-per-game in OVC play.

JACKSON SOLID AGAINST THE CATS Sophomore Paul Jackson played a team-high 35 minutes at the point vs. Kentucky and only turned the ball over once. Jackson leads the OVC in assist-turnover ratio (48/15, 3.2).

DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR JACKSON Sophomore Paul Jackson recorded his first career double-double on Nov. 22 vs. Long-wood, scoring 14 points and dishing out 13 assists. He is the first Colonel to record double-digit assists in a game since Jabs Newby in 2011.

SEEING MORE MINUTES Paul Jackson played 10 or more minutes in nine of Eastern’s last 10 games. Over Eastern’s final four regular season games, Jackson averaged 21 minutes per contest.

MINE, MINE, MINE, MINE Paul Jackson grabbed a career-best four rebounds and had two assists in EKU’s OVC East first place-clinching win over Tennessee Tech (Feb. 28).

PROVIDING “ASSIST”-ANCE Just one game after setting a new career-high with five assists, Paul Jackson broke that mark with seven helpers against Austin Peay (Feb. 23). He also had only one turnover in 22 minutes of action.

STEPPING UP In the absence of senior point guard Corey Walden, Paul Jackson got the start at Belmont (Feb. 19) and played a career-high 30 minutes. He dished out a career-best five assists, made only four turnovers and had two steals.

SECOND MOST POINTS Paul Jackson scored four points at Tennessee State (Feb. 14). It was the most points he has scored in a game since recording 10 points in EKU’s second game of the season against Kentucky Christian.

FINDING HIS STROKE AT A GREAT TIME Before facing No. 18 Miami (Dec. 19), Isaac McGlone had hit just 1-of-11 three-point at-tempts in his previous three games and was shooting 17.2 percent (5-for-29) from deep for the season. Nick Mayo’s Career Stats

HISTORIC SWEEP Following EKU’s Music City sweep, JaVontae Hawkins (Player of the Week), Jarelle Reischel (Newcomer of the Week) and Nick Mayo (Freshman of the Week) swept the OVC’s week-ly awards. It is the first time under the current format (1985-86) three individual players from the same school have swept the OVC weekly awards outright (no ties).

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK #8 Nick Mayo was voted the OVC Freshman of the Week for the eighth time on Feb. 1. He averaged 20.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg over the week before. The EKU record for OVC Freshman of the Week awards is 11, held by Matt Witt in 2002-03.

BLOCK PARTY Freshman Nick Mayo’s five blocks vs. Morehead State were the most by a Colonel since Eric Stutz had seven vs. Southeast Missouri on Feb. 2, 2013.

ELITE FRESHMAN As of Jan. 27, freshman Nick Mayo ranks 10th in the country among freshmen in total points scored (333).

MAYO’S FIRST DOUBLE-DOUBLE Freshman Nick Mayo was voted the OVC Freshman of the Week for the seventh time on Jan. 25. Mayo recorded his first-career double-double vs. Tennessee Tech on Jan. 23 (20 points, 10 rebounds). He averaged 19.0 ppg and 7.0 rpg for the week.

OVC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK #6 Nick Mayo was voted the OVC Freshman of the Week for the sixth time on Jan. 18. He averaged 25.5 ppg and shot 73% from the field in two road games at EIU and SIUE. Mayo currently ranks fourth in the OVC in scoring during league play (17.6 ppg).

MAYO DOMINANT AT SIUE Freshman Nick Mayo scored a career-high 28 points at SIUE on Jan. 16. He leads all OVC freshmen in scoring (13.7 ppg).

23 FOR MAYO Freshman Nick Mayo poured in a career-high 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field in the loss at Eastern Illinois on Jan. 14. Mayo leads all freshmen in the OVC in scoring (12.9 ppg) and field goal percentage (59.4).

MAYO’S 5TH OVC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK Freshman Nick Mayo was voted the OVC Freshman of the Week for the fifth time on Jan. 11. Mayo scored 15 points and posted career highs in rebounds (7) and blocks (3) vs. Southeast Missouri.

ON TARGET As of Jan. 2, Nick Mayo has the second-highest field goal percentage (58.2) of any freshman in the country.

MR. OVC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK Freshman Nick Mayo was named the OVC Freshman of the Week for the third time this season on Monday. Mayo averaged 14.5 ppg and 4.5 rpg in two games at Kentucky and Marshall last week.

IMPRESSIVE FRESHMEN Through eight games, Freshman Dujuanta Weaver is fifth in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio (24 assists, 4 turnovers). Fellow freshman Nick Mayo is second in the OVC and 21st in the country in field goal percentage (64.2).

Jaylen Babb-Harrison’s Career Stats

THREE-POINT PERCENTAGE LEADER Junior Jaylen Babb-Harrison came off the bench to knock down three three-point-ers at Morehead State on Feb. 11. As of Feb. 12, Babb-Harrison leads the OVC in three-point field goal percentage (46.4). The last Colonel to finish the season as the OVC’s leader in three-pointer percentage was Mike Rose in 2008-09 (48.1). Rose also led the NCAA that year.

DIALING IN Junior Jaylen Babb-Harrison came off the bench to score 13 points at EIU on Jan. 14. Babb-Harrison has hit seven of his last nine three-point attempts and now ranks second in the OVC in three-point field goal percentage (46.0).

HE SCORES IN BUNCHES Junior Jaylen Babb-Harrison came off the bench and scored 14 points in a span of four minutes in the second half to help EKU pull away from Southeast Missouri, 88-69, on Jan. 9. He finished with a season-high 18 points.

SOLID GAME FOR JBH Jaylen Babb-Harrison set career highs for minutes (25), defensive rebounds (4) and assists (4) against East Tennessee (Dec. 16). He also scored 11 points.

CAREER-MOST FOR STEALS Jaylen Babb-Harrison’s six steals against Cincinnati-Clermont set a new career-high for the redshirt sophomore. His previous best was two.

CAREER GAME FOR JAYLEN Jaylen Babb-Harrison set career highs for points (28), rebounds (7), three-pointers (6), field goals (10) and field goals attempted (18) against Kentucky Christian (Nov. 18). The redshirt sophomore went 6-for-7 from three-point range.

MORE POINTS IN ONE GAME THAN ENTIRE CAREER Jaylen Babb-Harrison’s 28 points against Kentucky Christian (Nov. 18) was six points more than he had scored in his entire 10-game career (22) before facing the Knights.

POWELL GETS THE START Senior Ja’Mill Powell made his first start since Nov. 16 vs. Morehead State (Jan. 30) and responded with eight points and a career-high seven rebounds.

POWELL CLUTCH OFF THE BENCH With both Jarelle Reischel and JaVontae Hawkins in foul trouble throughout the game, senior Ja’Mill Powell came off the bench and played a season-high 24 minutes at Austin Peay. He scored 13 points and hit three clutch free throws in the final 33 seconds to help seal the victory.

POWELL OPENS STRONG Senior Ja’Mill Powell was the lone returning Colonel to score in double figures in EKU’s season-opening 107-80 win over Coppin State. He poured in 18 points and also grabbed a career-high five rebounds.

POWELL FOR THREEEEE!! Ja’Mill Powell went 4-for-6 from three-point range in Eastern’s CIT first round victory over Norfolk State (March 17). He tied his career-best with four three-pointers and finished with 12 points.

40-MINUTE MAN Ja’Mill Powell played 42 minutes in Eastern’s overtime loss at Murray State (Jan. 29). He had never played more than 28 minutes in a game during his first season as a Colonel.

POWELL FINDS STROKE AT MURRAY Ja’Mill Powell had 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field at Murray State (Jan. 29). He connected on 4-of-10 from three-point range. The junior also had four rebounds, three as-sists and two steals.

BIG GAME FOR NEWCOMER POWELL AGAINST BYU Newcomer Ja’Mill Powell scored an EKU career-best 26 at BYU (Nov. 29). He hit 8-of-14 from the field, both career-highs. Anthony Pratt’s Career Stats

PRATT MAKES AN IMPACT Freshman Anthony Pratt Jr. played a career-high 18 minutes and blocked a career-high three shots on Feb. 11 at Morehead State.



Dan McHale, a former Univer-sity of Louisville assistant, was in-troduced as Eastern Kentucky’s new head coach on April 9, 2015.

“We are ecstatic to welcome Coach Dan McHale and his family to the Colonel Family,” Eastern Ken-tucky University President Michael Benson said. “Dan brings years of experience at some top-flight pro-grams to EKU, along with ties to Kentucky and this region. He came to us with the highest recommenda-tions from some of America’s best coaches and we have every con-fidence he will take our basketball program to the next level.”

Before being chosen as Eastern Kentucky’s 20th head men’s bas-ketball coach, McHale completed his second season as an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota where he worked under head coach Richard Pitino. McHale got his coaching start under Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino as a staff assistant at Louisville from 2001 to 2003.

“I’m extremely excited to be work-ing at Eastern Kentucky University,” McHale said. “I want to thank Presi-dent Benson and Steve Lochmueller for this opportunity. With the leader-ship of these two, it’s an honor to be a part of these exciting times at EKU. We are going to bring excitement to McBrayer Arena with a fast paced style of play. It’s going to be fun for our players and our fans.”

In his first season at Minnesota, McHale helped the Gophers to a NIT Championship and a 25-13 record that included wins over No. 9 Wis-consin and No. 11 Ohio State. The 25 victories are the second-most in program history. The 2014-15 squad won 18 games, including a victory at Michigan State, a team that would reach the Final Four.

“I am extremely excited and proud of Dan McHale,” Richard Pitino said. “Eastern Kentucky is getting a tre-mendous coach and recruiter, but more importantly a great person. He will represent the Eastern Kentucky program in a first-class manner. There is no doubt in my mind that he will do great things there.”

McHale served as a student manager for four seasons (1997-01) at Kentucky. He was part of one national championship team, four NCAA Tournament teams and three Southeastern Conference champi-onships while working with Tubby Smith’s Wildcats.

The Cardinals went 25-7, won the 2003 Conference USA Tournament title and reached the NCAA Tourna-ment in McHale’s second season as a staff assistant at Louisville. During his first stint he assisted with oppo-nent scouting, game preparation and

on-campus recruiting. After one year as the director of operations at Man-hattan College, McHale returned to UofL for two seasons as the director of video operations, overseeing ad-vance scouting video and evaluation video of Cardinal players. In his sec-ond two-year stint at Louisville, the Cardinals won 45 games and played in two NCAA Tournaments.

“Dan is one of the hardest work-ing coaches in our profession,” Rick Pitino said. “I have great admiration for his dedication to our game. He is a great addition to our state.”

In 2007, McHale joined Kevin Willard’s first staff at Iona College. As an assistant, McHale helped lead the Gaels from two wins the season before the duo arrived to 12 wins their first season and 21 wins in year three at Iona. He recruited NBA draft pick and 2012 MAAC Player of the Year Scott Machado to Iona.

McHale followed Willard to Seton Hall when he was named head coach in 2010. In their second season, the Pirates won 20 games. While at Se-ton Hall, McHale was responsible for the Pirates’ defensive game planning and spearheaded opponent scouting and game preparation.

“Eastern Kentucky has hit a home run with the hiring of Dan McHale, who is a rising star within the coach-ing ranks,” Willard said. “He is not only a terrific recruiter and mentor of student-athletes, but he also has a great mind for the game of basket-ball. Dan has earned the opportu-nity to lead a basketball program, and with his outstanding knowledge, personality and work ethic, he will make a positive impact at Eastern Kentucky.”

McHale will look to add to the success of the Rick Pitino coach-ing tree that includes Billy Donovan (Florida), Tubby Smith (Texas Tech), Mick Cronin (Cincinnati), Richard Pitino (Minnesota) and former EKU head coach Travis Ford (Oklahoma State).

McHale has caught the eye of one of America’s top young college basketball coaches – Memphis head coach Josh Pastner.

“Dan is going to do an outstand-ing job at Eastern Kentucky Univer-sity,” said Pastner. “He is a tireless worker and will do the job with great principle and great work ethic. East-ern Kentucky got a winner in Dan McHale.”

The Chatham, New Jersey na-tive earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and gradu-ated with honors from UK in 2001. McHale and his wife Jackie have two daughters, Lilly and Molly, and a son, Daniel.
