YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team wraps up a four-match home streak with a pair of matches in the Convocation Center, welcoming Miami University Friday, Oct. 12, and Bowling Green State University Saturday, Oct. 13. Both matches are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Friday’s match between the Eagles and Huskies will be broadcast on ESPN+, with Adam Jaksa bringing play-by-play and Kilee Goetz as analyst. EMU’s Saturday match against BGSU can be found on Eagle All-Access. Live stats will be available for both matches.

SERIES HISTORY: Eastern has a long history against both of this weekend’s aviary adversaries, having played Miami 54 times and Bowling Green 59 times since the program’s inception in 1976. The Eagles fell 3-0 in its lone matchup with the RedHawks in the 2018 season. In fact, EMU has not defeated MU since a 3-0 road sweep in the 2011 season. The Green and White’s last victory over Miami in the Convocation Center was in 2010. EMU took a road loss to BGSU last year, playing in its first match without then-freshman Franki Strefling. The Eagles last defeated the Falcons in Bowling Green, 3-2, during head coach Kimi Olson’s first season of 2015. The last time Eastern took down Bowling Green at home was a 3-0 sweep in 2010.

RECORD-SETTING RAJEWSKI: Senior setter Mallory Rajewski set the modern-era three-set record for assists when she dished out 47 in the Eagles’ sweep of Northern Illinois, Oct. 5. Only two other setters have ever had 40+ assists in a three-set match: Jill Briner, who previously held the record with 44, and Ashley Mason, who had 40 or more in a three-set match seven times in her career. Rajewski also became just the fifth player in the 42-year history of the program to amass 2,500+ assists and 1,000+ digs when she reached the 1,000 dig club against Ball State, Sept. 28, joining Kate Sulewski, Ashley Mason, Sherry Anderson, and Camila Olaio. The Midland, Mich. native spent the 2017 season chasing 2,000 assists, becoming just the eighth player in EMU history to pass the mark, and currently sits in seventh place in Eastern laurels with 2,604 assists. The Midland, Mich. native set a personal-best for assists in a season with 891 last year, and needs 703 assists to move into the top five all-time.

SURGING SMITH: Senior Jordan Smith is clearly saving her best performance for last, as the outside hitter is putting up the best numbers of her career in her final season in the Green and White. The Solon, Iowa native has 243 kills and a hitting percentage of .222, nearly 100 points higher than her career average coming into the season (.132). The disparity is even greater when looking at the senior’s numbers in Mid-American Conference play, as Smith has 69 kills with a .245 attack percentage in 2018, compared to her .120 MAC career attack average coming into the season.

LEADING THE LEAGUE: Eastern Michigan’s superb 2018 season has the Eagles ranked near the top in almost every major statistical category in the Mid-American Conference. EMU leads in assists per set (13.17), kills per set (13.87), and opponent hitting percentage (.145), while coming in second in hitting percentage (.238), digs per set (18.31), and third in blocks per set (2.19). The Eagles’ lowest team ranking is in service aces per set, where it is currently ranked sixth (1.34). The Green and White’s 18.31 digs per set average also ranks fourth in the NCAA, while libero Alyssa LaFace’s 6.16 digs per set is fifth nationally.

CHASING THE 1,000/1,000 CLUB: Only seven women in the history of Eastern Michigan volleyball have reached 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs for their respective careers. After reaching the 1,000 kill mark against Savannah State, Sept. 8, senior Jordan Smith has the chance to become number eight. The outside hitter has 852 digs in her career, and would be the first Eagle to join the 1,000/1,000 club since Paige Roback in 2013.

HAMBY ELEVATES GAME: Junior Ariel Hamby has taken her game to a new level in 2018, helping Eastern to its best start in MAC play since 2010. The right side attacker has already surpassed her career total for kills (141) this season, and is also averaging more than twice her best kills per set rate (2.14) so far.

ON THE HORIZON: Eastern Michigan hits the road for the first time in the month of October next weekend, traveling east to play the University at Buffalo and the University of Akron. The Eagles’ swing through the MAC East begins in Buffalo at 6 p.m. on Oct. 19, and wraps up at 5 p.m. in Akron, Oct. 20. EMU returns to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center for a home match against in-state rival Central Michigan University Thurday, Oct. 24, at 6 p.m. for its annual Dig Pink match.

HAUT NAMED MAC OFFENSIVE POW: Redshirt junior Cassie Haut was named the Mid-American Conference West Offensive Player of the Week, Oct. 2, for her performances at Ball State and Toledo. The middle blocker finished with 23 kills while hitting .500 overall on the weekend. The Monroe, Mich. native’s 14 kills against Toledo marked the ninth time this season she finished with double-digit kills, and the fourth time she has done so while committing one or less errors. The Player of the Week honor was the first for Haut since winning Offensive Player of the Week Nov. 17, 2015. It also marked the sixth Player of the Week honor for Eastern Michigan in the 2018 season, its most since winning seven in 2015.

LAFACE RACKS UP ANOTHER HONOR: Senior libero Alyssa LaFace earned her second MAC West Defensive Player of the Week honor, Sept. 24, after she finished the week with an eye-popping 8.14 digs per set mark, 57 total digs, and did not commit a reception error in 27 attempts. The Allen Park, Mich. native is second in the country in digs per set with a 6.16 mark. Not only did the MAC recognize LaFace’s stellar week, but so did national volleyball online publication VolleyMob.com, listing the libero’s week among five honorable mention nominees across the NCAA.

TWO SETTERS, ONE AWARD x TWO: For the second time in 2018, the 6-2 setting duo of redshirt senior Mallory Rajewski and junior Riley Taylor was honored by the Mid-American Conference as the collective Setter of the Week, Sept. 24. The pair averaged 13.14 assists per set in the Eagles’ two victories over Central Michigan and Kent State to open up MAC play. They divvied out an outstanding 57 assists in a four-set win on the road at CMU to kick off the weekend, and then put up 35 in a sweep of KSU in the Convocation Center. Rajewski and Taylor lead an Eastern team that is No. 1 in the conference in assists per set (13.17), and are contributing 4.79 digs per set to the league’s second-best defense (18.31 digs per set).

The 2018 season marks Head Coach Kimi Olson’s fourth year leading the Eastern Michigan University volleyball. In 2017, the Eagles made the Mid-American Conference Tournament for the second time under Olson, winning its first round game against No. 5-ranked Buffalo. EMU finished in the top half of the conference in six categories, including leading the conference in blocks per set (2.46). Kelly Ferguson, who was named All-MAC Honorable Mention, finished second in the league with a .370 attack percentage, while Sam Falco also finished second with 1.18 blocks per set. Setter Mallory Rajewski climbed into the top 10 all-time in career assists, finishing her third season with 2,164 career helpers. Jordan Smith is approaching the rare feat of 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs, having 885 career kills and 706 career digs. As a collegiate athlete at the University of Southern California, Olson was a member of the Trojans’ 35-0 National Championship team, appearing in all 35 contests and averaging 4.50 assists. The following season she posted marks of 6.59 assists and 1.84 digs as the Trojans reached the NCAA Final Four. She was also named a co-captain for her final two seasons. One of Olson’s passions is team culture and empowering student-athletes to reach maximum personal and team potential. She promotes team spirit through a unified vision of being a part of something greater than yourself with EMU Volleyball.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (THE GOOD): With the announcement that redshirt junior Cassie Haut was the Mid-American Conference West Offensive Player of the Week, Oct. 1, Eastern Michigan has four individuals that have earned player of the week honors in 2018, its most for a single season in program history. For the first time since the Mid-American Conference began awarding both offensive and defensive Player of the Week awards, EMU has garnered multiple MAC West Players of the Week multiple times. Senior Alyssa LaFace was named MAC Defensive Player of the Week while redshirt senior Mallory Rajewski and junior Riley Taylor were collectively MAC West Setter of the Week, Sept. 24. It marked the second win of the season for both LaFace and the setting duo of Rajewski and Taylor. Senior Jordan Smith has also earned conference honors this season, as she was named MAC West Offensive Player of the Week, Sept. 5. The last time EMU had multiple Player of the Week honors in the same week was Nov. 17, 2015, when Corynne Smith and then-freshman Cassie Haut were crowned by the conference as Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (THE BAD): In each instance that Eastern has won a Mid-American Conference Player of the Week honor, the Eagles have gone on to lose their first match following the announcement. Libero Alyssa LaFace won MAC West Defensive POW, Sept. 1, and EMU fell on the road to Purdue Fort Wayne in four on the same day. Outside hitter Jordan Smith and setters Mallory Rajewski and Riley Taylor won Offensive Player and Setter of the Week, respectively, Sept. 10, and the Green and White fell to Houston in four at the Robert Morris Invitational. Most recently, when LaFace, Rajewski, and Taylor earned defensive player and setter of the week, respectively, Sept. 22, Eastern was swept on the road by Ball State.

MILESTONE ALERT: With senior Alyssa LaFace’s 37-dig performance against Harvard Universty, Sept. 2, the Allen Park, Michigan native tied the Eastern Michigan modern-era (2008-present) record for digs in a four-set match. The libero also topped the 1,000-dig plateau for her career with a 33-dig performance against St. John’s University, Aug. 25.

EXPANDING THE RECRUITING TERRITORY: Head Coach Kimi Olson and her staff have worked hard to expand the area to find future Eagles since taking over in 2016, and the 2018 class shows this well. Of the five freshman, just one is from the state of Michgian (Heidi Fausze, Temperance, Mich.), while the first players in program history from California (Abbey Kearney, Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and Hawaii (Julia Fisher, Kailua, Hawaii) also join the class.

WORST TO FIRST: One of Eastern’s keys to success in 2017 was its ability to block as a team, leading the Mid-American Conference with 320 total blocks. The Eagles finished 2016 with just 179.5 blocks, last place in the conference. In addition, two Eagles, Sam Falco and Kelly Ferguson, finished in the top three in blocking as individuals. Falco led the league with 148 total blocks, while Ferguson ended the season with the third-best number of 131.
