Eastern York School District
October to December 2017
The East York Rotary spon-
sored 5 Eastern York High
School students to attend The
RYLA, (Rotary Youth Leader-
ship Awards Conference), at
Messiah College in mid-June.
Approximately 140 juniors
from 7 Rotary Districts in
Pennsylvania attended this 5
day, 4 night conference. RYLA
provides Leadership training
for outstanding young men
and women from public and
nonpublic schools. The daily
schedules at the conference
consist of speakers, career
seminars, a challenge ropes
course, team building activi-
ties, a conference band and
chorus, and much more. The
East York Rotary raises funds
to be able to completely spon-
sor our students. They pay
$475 per student and are com-
pletely invested in Eastern
York School District and help-
ing out students. This year’s
participants include (L-R )
Zachary Falk, Cameron
Dedrick, Ethan Quinones, Lak-
yn Meeder and Taylor Currier.
The East York Rotary honored
the participants at a breakfast
on September 13th, and en-
couraged them to share their
experiences from the confer-
ence which included positive
feedback.
On September 8, Eastern York High School students joined students and
staff from 17 different school districts across York County for the first
Youth Mental Health Conference at the Pullo Center at Penn State York.
This conference was a culminating event organized by the members of
The York County Mental Health Alliance, known as “The Silence Ends
Here”. This organization began last year with the goal of ending the
mental health stigma and to focus on mental health awareness. Seven
Eastern York High School students and counselor Mrs. Monaghan,
participated in the day’s activities. The morning started with Keynote
Speaker Travis Lloyd, who is a leading authority on the topics of overcom-
ing adversity, foster care, and mental health. He is a qualified Crisis Inter-
vention Specialist and has spoken at high schools, colleges, nationally
recognized conferences and professional development events. He
sparked interests of many students with his personal stories as well as
entertaining them with rap songs that he writes and performs himself.
He involved many students in discussions and invited them to look at
some of their own issues with which they are dealing. Travis then led a
panel of 6 students who were brave enough to share their own personal
struggles in life and more importantly how they became the people they
are today. Students gave advice on how to move on from trauma and
tragedy and feel secure with who you are in life. This panel sparked
immense feelings from the audience which ranged from tears, to smiles,
and even cheers and applause. After Lunch, the students and staff heard
more personal stories from speakers from “Minding Your Mind”, a
mental health organization out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that helps
reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues and helps others
who are suffering to know they are not alone.

Little Free Library Now Open at Canadochly Elementary School
As of September 11, 2017, Canadochly Elementary has had an official Little Free Library operating inside the school. Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing access to books for people of all ages. Canadochly’s Little Free Library has books for students in kindergarten through 5th grade. Students are welcome to borrow books as well as donate books to the library. Books can be borrowed for an unlimited amount of time and returned whenever students are finished with them. We have a mixture of fiction, nonfiction, joke books, poetry books, and so on. The books in Canadochly’s LFL have been donated by teachers and students.
We decided to start a LFL in order to get more books into the
hands of our students. The more they read, the better they
become at reading, understanding vocabulary, and spelling. We
are encouraging our students to become lifelong learners and
passionate readers. We are encouraging our community of East-
ern York School District to consider adding a Little Free Library to
your neighborhoods! Check it out at littlefreelibrary.org.
This year the students at Canadochly Elementary are singing praises to our beloved veter-
ans. Thirty three students in grades three through five have volunteered their after school
time in order to produce the Veteran’s Day Musical, We Honor The Brave. The students will
be singing, acting and dancing their way through a Veteran’s Day Parade honoring those
who served in the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, and Marines. Kindergarten teacher,
Mr. Young, and music teacher, Ms. Hostetter, are guiding the students through this tribute.
We Honor the Brave is a fifty minute musical written by
Dave and Jean Perry.
The show takes place during a Veteran’s Day Parade where we
meet three students, their “Gramps” and Bill. Gramps and Bill
are both veterans and teach the kids a thing or two about the
history of United States Armed Forces and the sacrifices that
so many have made for our great nation. Following an
in-school assembly, the students will perform the play for the
public on Friday, November 10 at 6:30 pm. If you have any
questions, please email Mr. Young at [email protected].
All veterans are welcome. If you know one, bring one along.
They deserve the honor!
Clifford, the Big Red Dog and Kreutz Creek Librarian Susan Nenstiel recently
visited the first graders at Canadochly. Ms. Nenstiel shared a Clifford story
and Clifford greeted each student. The visit was part of the “Grade One at
the Library” program. This program promotes the practice of children
receiving library cards so they can enjoy all the library has to offer.
On September 18 an assembly was held at Canadochly
Elemntary to kickoff the “Coins from Canadochly” program.
Monies collected will be used to help those who are suffer-
ing the devastation from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. At
the assembly Mrs. Winter and Mr. Young talked about
aempathy and shared a few pictures of what happened in
the areas where the hurricanes hit. Students have been so
inspired that they must empty their classroom containers in
the buckets in the office daily.

EYMS student council sisters,
Rory and Kendal Hengst, are
hanging posters for the student
council fundraiser. All of the
money raised will be used to
support middle school activities
throughout the year. Purchases
may be made for the remainder
of the school year at www.gaschoolstore.com. Eastern York’s
online ID # is 2667426. Sorry, but sales after September 25 will
not count toward student prizes.
The election results are in and here are the new 6th grade student council representatives. All candidates had to write an essay, get signatures from 25 classmates, and give a live televised speech to the entire 6th grade.

presidents for this year’s EYMS student council,
show their new student ID cards. Distribution of
the lanyards and cards was the first phase of the
new middle school security system which will help
the administrators in the event of an emergency.
Students are expected to wear their ID card when-
ever they are in school.
Dancing the night away! Over 250 Eastern York middle school students attended the first dance of the Year. The Back to School Dance was held in the middle school gym. Along with great music, students could purchase pizza, Rita’s Italian Ice, and have their picture taken and printed.
Eastern York School District would like to thank the organizations that support the students and staff of the district. In today’s environ-ment of limited resources, these groups provide valuable financial and volunteer support to the district. Their contributions include dona-tions for computers, classroom supplies, furniture, playground equipment, athletic equipment, band equipment, and valuable scholar-ships for our graduates. In addition, they sponsor activities for the students, such as field trips, May fairs, book fairs, and, “fun knights”.
