On even numbered months it will be delivered into Eastleigh, and on the odd numbered months to Boyatt Wood and Bishopstoke. This will give a total coverage of 10,000 addresses over a two month period (5,000 per month). It has been in publication since 2004, and is one of several Gazettes and associated magazines published and distributed through various SO and SP post code areas. Many of our advertisers repeat monthly, whilst some have been advertising with us for many years. Please feel free to call for more information and prices.

Advertisers have the benefit of our free in-house design for their advertisements by a professional artwork and graphics team.

Clients or agencies supplying artwork or images should send JPGs or PDFs, 300 dpi minimum if actual size, or at a higher resolution if smaller than the size required.

Welcome…to the March edition of the Eastleigh Gazette. This is one of my favourite months, because it includes the start of Spring.

Don’t forget Mothers’ Day on 18th March, and maybe the best date of the year – the 25th – the start of British Summer Time… clocks forward for those longer days.

I would like to thank everyone who uses the Gazette for local businesses and trades and we would ask those doing so to tell the advertiser where they saw their details.

Our magazines are printed in a factory that is FSC® & ISO 14001 certified. Sustainable and environmentally friendly printing is part of our ethos. Using vegetable-based inks and recycling nearly one hundred percent of our paper waste means you can be confident that this publication isn’t harming the planet.

Have a great March.

Eastleigh’s only independent and longest serving Jewellers is celebrating twenty five years trading in the town with a move to The Swan Centre!

Their present site, Smith Bradbeer House, High Street was David’s first shop and has served him well for for all of this time, but has insufficient space to accommodate the company’s expanding product lines – lines already being successfully promoted at their branches in Totton and Andover.

David’s links to Eastleigh go back even further – an apprenticed toolmaker, he worked at The Railway from 1975 to 1979, in the Production Planning Office. Until four years ago he had also run a successful market business for thirty two years.

Son James (Jim), already ‘cutting his teeth’ at Eastleigh alongside longtime employee Lynne, is very excited about the move and looking forward to welcoming past, present and future customers alike to the new store.

To their loyal customers who have supported them over the years they say “thank you” and be ready to be ‘wowed.’

Coincidentally 2012 is turning out to be a significant year in more ways than one as eldest son Daniel joins the family firm in the spring as their resident Goldsmith, having spent six years in the workshops of Jeremy France Jewellers of Winchester. He will be responsible for repairs and bespoke handmade pieces.

Daughter Amy became a full time staff member on 1st January, joining David’s wife and co-director Christine at the Andover branch to assist in the administrative and financial aspects of the Company. Truly a family affair!

And on a personal note, David and Christine celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary this year!

For further information see www.dmellorand sons.co.uk, or follow them on twitter for updates on the move and other items @davidmellorsons.

People begin Pilates for many reasons – referral by a chiropractor, doctor or physiotherapist; following an injury, accident or just to try something new. (Some come for Pippa Middleton’s bottom!). All then enjoy the benefits of increased flexibility, mobility through the joints, a stronger core, toned muscles and improved posture.

Pilates Works is a purpose built studio with Academy Studios in Romsey. They have five Pilates Reformer machines; they might look a little bit like instruments of torture, but they’re not as scary as they first appear! The Reformer machine uses a system of springs, pulleys and a moveable carriage meaning that the body is safe and supported as during work outs. The Reformer can simplify Pilates for beginners as well as providing a challenge for the user to become stronger and more flexible. It’s a very safe, effective and fun way to work out. Academy Studios are currently offering a FREE 30 MINUTE TRIAL SESSION.

“I initially signed up for the reformer sessions in October 2011 as a means of rehabilitation exercise,” says one satisfied client. “I sustained a hip injury in a car accident two years previously and had found it difficult to maintain any form of intensive or strenuous exercise. Also, with a wedding planned for December 2011, I was running out of time to get in shape!! With reformer, the exercises can be as gentle or as strenuous as you like! Using a lower resistance, I could have a good workout without putting any unnecessary stress through my hip. The results in such a short space of time were amazing! My husband has sent his personal thanks to my instructor, Dawn, for giving his wife such shapely, well trimmed legs and thighs!! I have subsequently signed up for ten more sessions!!”

Anyone wanting more information or wishing to book a free trial session should contact Dawn Cleland on 07903-599496, [email protected] or via www.pilatesme.com, or should call at Unit 10, Romsey Industrial Estate, Greatbridge Road, Romsey, Hampshire SO51 0HR.

We’re coming out of winter and the days are starting to get longer. Thoughts are turning to booking that Summer getaway or even of long sunny Easter days, when we seem to get the best of our weather! The prospect of sitting on the beach in a faraway spot or on the English coast looks highly possible. Soon, it will be time to pack away the big woolly jumpers and get out the summer clothing and beachwear!

If you haven’t already booked a holiday, then planning and looking forward to the annual summer holiday, or any holiday, is a great incentive for getting in shape and there’s lots of time to work on that beach body. An area that troubles a lot of people at the prospect of a beach holiday, is the ‘legs, bums and tums’ area! The thought of having to expose tummy flesh or thighs on the beach or at the poolside causes many people, women especially, to stay under wraps and not to join in with their family, who are having fun splashing about. However, the starting point of any beach holiday workout plan always starts with making dietary changes!

For rapid, yet safe and healthy results, drink lots of water in preference to all other kinds of drinks, replace sugary foods with fruits of all varieties, buy more fish and chicken and grill or steam it (using light seasoning, small amount of olive oil, lemon juice or spices for flavour), try whole beans and pulses, have

eggs a couple of times per week and eat as much salad and vegetables as possible. Limit pasta, bread and potatoes where possible, or halve your portions. Above all, don’t starve! This doesn’t work and is counter-productive.

There’s plenty of time to work on that tummy area with a well-planned abdominal workout and on the lower body in general with good toning exercises, such as squats and lunges, and push-ups for the upper body. There are lots of good ‘legs, bums and tums’ classes, which can be ideal for showing the correct technique and providing inspiration and motivation.

For those who prefer to work out at home, push-ups, lunges and squats bring great results and there are countless number of abdominal exercises that can be changed and adapted in endless ways. A good abdominal programme will include all of the different muscles and it is vital to do so, as working the muscles equally will prevent imbalances in strength and suppleness, which could lead to problems. It is also important to know your abdominal/lower back strength, because working out at the wrong level can lead to injury and no one wants to pull a muscle! It is not usually the exercise that causes the injury, it is performing the exercise incorrectly or at the wrong level that leads either to problems, no result or to giving up.

For those people, who have had any kind of abdominal surgery, any back problems at all, or any other condition affecting the abdominal region, they should firstly see their doctor to check that they can start an abdominal programme and to get clearance and any restrictions or contra-indications. This also applies to pre- and post-natal women. There are many exercises that can be performed for nearly everyone’s situation, but it is important to get a correct diagnosis so that the right programme is followed tailored to that individual. It is especially important for those people with special conditions to get the advice of an exercise professional.

But remember, no amount of sit-ups and crunchies can remove extra abdominal fat and get you ready for the beach holiday– that will only happen with a reduction in calories consumed or an increase in calorie expenditure. What exercise will do is give you a good, strong firm body and the bonus of the many health benefits that come with it!

Surinder Bellamy is a personal trainer and life and performance coach based near Wellow and also covering Salisbury, Romsey and Totton areas. For fitness, weight-loss, nutrition, stress, pre/post natal, lifestyle/behavioural and wedding/holiday goals, she can be contacted by telephone on 01725-511795 or 07763-823699.

HOLIDAY INN

Are You Sitting Comfortably? Can you get up from your chair easily?

Do you suffer from stiff joints, backache or poor circulation?

Do you need to raise your legs to relieve the pressure in your legs?

Do you need to recline to get comfortable?

If these questions apply to you then your old chair is probably not helping you to achieve your needs. Unfortunately, most chairs found in furniture retailers are manufactured to fit Mr or Mrs Average. Whilst you wouldn’t buy shoes that don’t fit why even consider a chair that doesn’t fit you.

If you feel that you need a little help with the problems above there is a wide selection of rise and recline chairs that can assist you standing up and relaxing at the touch of a burton. With dual and single motors, excellent range of fabrics, sizes to accommodate everyone and prices to suit most budgets. Certain ranges also incorporate a massage and heat system that will manipulate away aches and pains associated with backache. Some people prefer to sleep in their recliner and several models are designed for this purpose.

Products such as these often allow the individual the ability to maintain independence and a reduction in carer involvement.

If you or someone you care for are considering this specific option for health reasons it is better to obtain advice from retailers who specialise in Mobility and other health related products, trained to assess individual requirements.

As a general guide basic models range from around £500 and will be covered by a 12 month warranty.

We are looking for a freelance sales person to sell advertising space in our series of magazines, to follow-up leads in some cases and to help with the development of the franchising side of the business.

With earnings on a commission basis and with the ability to be home-based, this position enables you to work as and when you can and as often as you want.

When it comes to maximising your revenue and profits, it’s all about executing the right strategies in a timely manner with the right people. In these times of gloomy forecasts for Europe this is just the time to UP your game and ensure that you are pressing all of the right buttons.

It is not necessarily about doing more, but doing the right thing. As the saying goes, ‘sometimes more means less’ or rather spend your energies on doing the right things and not just the ones you are used to doing.

Here are my top 10 tips for every business owner:

1. Concentrate on your Customer base:

Understand your customer demographics and why they buy your products and services. ASK them the question. Also ask them if they can recommend others to you. Maybe set up a new pricing structure offering new price breaks giving your customers more flexibility to buy!

2. Increase LOW cost marketing:

Set up a business Twitter and Facebook page. Start a blog or comment on other blogs.

3. Ask for opinions:

Bounce ideas off of people you trust. Ask your team for input to new ideas. Ask your customers how you might change your product or service.

4. Keep your Web Site fresh:

Make sure if you have a Web site that it is up to date and reflects your current strategies. Add an e-commerce section. If you haven’t got a Web site, invest in one. You can get started for very little outlay now.

5. Free up time to sharpen up what really makes a difference:

This one always seems impossible, but look at your ‘to do’ list. How many things do you do that you could STOP doing?

Are you properly organised. Are you using technology or is it using you?

6. Offer special events to draw in customers:

Run demonstrations or education classes. Re-look at your pricing policy and maybe re-launch products or services. Re-arrange merchandise to make it appear fresher to give a new customer experience.

7. Network to increase referrals:

There are both free and fee groups that you can join and don’t ignore the ‘virtual’ groups on the Net. Do not miss out on social event networking.

8. Keep a watchful eye on your cash flow:

All businesses need cash. Make sure that your invoices are being paid promptly. Pay early if offered a discount. Monitor your cash flow regularly, daily if needs be.

9. Update your business plan:

You should be planning for success, but you cannot monitor your achievements if you do not have a plan and do not have a way of measuring what you have done.

10. Prepare for a step change:

You might need additional funding to make that next big step. How will you convince friends, family or banks (or other financial institutions) to put in money if you are not clear on where you want to go and where you have come from? You must be able to show the ability to repay any loans.

So, go forward from here with the confidence if you do all or even some of these the chances are your competitors will not. You will have a terrific advantage to succeed.

Good luck and see you next month.

A Contemporary RomanceHe was wearing a grey hoodie, and a dab of ‘ Eau de Skate’

He chose a wicked restaurant for our brilliant first date, He ordered two huge hamburgers, with relish and some fries,

And across that plastic table I gazed deep into his eyes When I saw his ‘HATE’ tattoo, I knew I’d found my perfect heaven,

And I got to know him well, from half past ten until eleven. We had to leave quite quickly as his lovely pit bull Clyde,

Was frightening all the customers; and snarling, just outside, He took me for a lovely walk just by the local tip

And there over the council bins, I dropped my bag of chips, We have a brand new baby now, a lovely little boy,

I’ve dressed him in a hoodie and I’m going to name him Troy I know his Dad still loves me but my best mate’s not convinced,

She’s told me I should ask him…but I haven’t seen him since.

Have you noticed how many petrol stations have

closed down over the past few years and become hand car

wash centres?

I drove into one recently to fill up my car with fuel and realised something was wrong when I found the pumps had been removed and a bunch of guys arrived with buckets and sponges to start cleaning my car. When I explained that I wanted to “fill up” with fuel, I was told that the pumps had been closed for months!

Many of these closed down filling stations are in town centres where other filling stations are available around the corner, but some of them are in remote places where you could run out of fuel.

Research from Britannia Rescue showed that there are many remote spots in the UK with no petrol stations at all. Some of these spots are popular with day trippers, where motorist who run out of fuel and face a long walk to the nearest station. With petrol costing so much now drivers are going out with little

petrol in their tanks and running on empty without knowing the location of the nearest pump - not a good idea if your favourite garage has closed. Running on empty can also potentially damage your engine.

Amazingly many drivers are also wasting fuel by shopping around in their cars looking for the cheapest fuel. I’ve often been told to drive to a petrol station miles away as the fuel is 2p a litre cheaper even though it would cost me far more in fuel to get there and back.

So if you are one of those drivers that regularly run on empty thinking there will be a garage handy when you run dry then take a can of fuel with you. You might find that garage that you filled up in last time with not be there now!

Diary of a Fitness CentreWellow Fitness Centre Diary – each month we give you a fly on the wall view of day to day events in our award winning centre just outside Romsey!

Monday - We’re still really buzzing here at the centre. Loads of members have worked through Christmas and the New Year to carry on with their fitness goals which is great. The beginning of the week sees the first of our Yoga and Pilates classes in our studio, and Circuits in the evening at Lockerley Village Hall. Phew - busy but great fun!

Tuesday – lots of our members join us because they can take long holidays and not have to waste money on unused weeks while they’re away. Some buy the super flexible session packages which are valid for a year. Members are returning from travels to Tanzania, Australia, New Zealand and even the base camp of Mount Everest!!

Wednesday – business as usual today with class participants and gym members making the centre really busy.

Thursday – our new team member joins us and is

getting used to the way we work – now that we are a multi award winning centre it’s important for us to keep up our customer service commitment and our new member is doing brilliantly!

Friday – it’s great to see our Phyiotherapist back at work with us – she recently had a knee op and had to practice what she preaches by following her own rehabilitation instructions!!!

Ok, we’re finally coming back down to earth! We’ve already started having enquiries about joining the centre which is so nice.

More of a “normal” diary next month – see you all then.

We can be contacted at the centre on 01794-323322 or via email on [email protected]

Shopping List -

Method -Firstly, grease and line with parchment two 21cm (8”) sponge tins. Into a large mixer bowl, sift in the cocoa powder, flour and baking powder. Using another bowl (heat-proof glass or stainless steel) melt the chocolate and butter together over a pan of hot, but not boiling water. Using a food processor, puree the cooked beetroot and then whisk in the beaten eggs. Now add the chocolate/butter mix and the beetroot/egg mix to the mixer bowl with the dry ingredients. Using a mixer, beat the combined mixtures together thoroughly on a slow speed. Then pour the mixture, half & half into each tin. Bake for 35-40 minutes at 180˚C (160˚C fan)/Gas Mark 4 until when a knife

inserted into the centre comes out clean. Leave the cakes to stand in the tins for 10 minutes before turning out on a wire rack to cool. To make the filling, beat together the mascarpone, butter and icing sugar. Spread on top of one of the cakes and place the other cake on top so that the filling is in the middle. Finally, make the ganache to go on top. In a pan, bring the cream to just boiling and remove from the heat. Add the chopped chocolate and beat in vigorously until well combined and smooth. Allow to cool slightly, then spread on top of the cake. Leave to set. Decorate with some white chocolate shavings or a decoration of your choice.

Very superstitious...” goes the well known Stevie wonder hit – we certainly are, but why? Most of us have some sort of unusual superstition, whether it’s a pair of

lucky socks, avoiding walking under a ladder or what the bride wears at a wedding (something old, something new, etc.). I remember as a child avoiding the cracks in the pavements, so as not to induce some terrible fate. Even the most belligerent

will cross their fingers when they play their weekly lottery numbers, even if there is no sane argument to say it will make a blind bit of difference!

We each have our own collection of superstitions that we observe, applying to various aspects of our daily life – some are historical, some are logical, some are simply ridiculous! Certain superstitions require us to recite a verse, as in the case

of seeing magpies - “one for sorrow, two for joy....” Others require a specific action such as touching wood to avoid tempting fate or tossing salt over your left shoulder. A broken mirror could bring seven years bad

luck and we all have to be extra careful when Friday the 13th comes around. All quite bizarre when you really think about it!

But where do they come from and why do we do them? According to the dictionary they are an irrational belief arising from ignorance or fear. They certainly don’t really fit with the Cynicism of the modern world and probably exist halfway between religion and witchcraft! Some studies show that the more lucky you believe yourself to be, the more lucky you will become – so perhaps superstitions work in this way and all we are really doing is subconsciously trying to create our own good fortune by avoiding bad luck!

There is certainly no scientific reason for observing all these strange rituals, but one thing is for sure, when it comes to the lottery is it really worth the risk of not becoming an instant millionaire just for the sake of wearing a pair of lucky red socks, gesturing to magpies, avoiding any black cats or ladders, throwing condiments over your shoulder and hanging horseshoes a certain way? Well, I’ll keep my fingers crossed and let you know if it works!

Ben Harris talks about beingVery Superstitious!
