I didn’t intend to mention the Prime Minister’s ponytail gaffe but then I couldn’t resist. Frankly, I am staggered that New Zealanders, in particular our MPs, have nothing more substantial to concern them than an incident apparently meant in jest even if it was foolhardy.

Mr Key has explained and apologised and, while I in no way condone inappropriate touching or ‘unsafe’ workplaces, I hardly think what appears to have been a bit of light-hearted joking is worthy of a nation throwing up its hands in horror. Should our public figures no longer cuddle young children or give bonny babies a kiss?

In a world where the most powerful governments appear helpless against terrorism, can do nothing about horrific ISIS murders and are failing to assist thousands of refugees fleeing war torn lands, and where so many countries are dealing with massive natural disasters – earthquakes, famine, cyclones, floods – here we are devastated by ponytail-pulling.

Doesn’t anyone think our politicians would be better employed running the country or making their voices heard on the countless world-wide inequalities and undesirable actions. Are we so PC that we can’t see silly joking around shouldn’t be playing out like a cheap soap opera?

The cafe where the PM’s blunder occurred is frequented by many well-known citizens and, with Mr Key a regular visitor, I do not understand why the young woman, if so offended, did not immediately complain to the cafe manager or owners. Surely they would have diplomatically approached the PM

and hopefully, the issue would have been resolved there and then.

What we also do not know is how the PM’s joking was initially rebuffed – in a firm and serious tone which brooked no argument or semi-lightly so as not to offend? If the latter was the case it may have been mistaken as more joking. But that is mere speculation as are many of the comments and remarks made since.

I think this incident has been blown out of all proportion. The PM made an error of judgment in a cafe where he is well known and appears to enjoy a relaxed camaraderie with staff. The hair-tugging certainly needed to stop but so does the chain-yanking dialogue that has accompanied it. It’s time to show some commonsense.

On another note, and a sad one, entertainer and musician Johnny Bond passed away last month. His death will have made little impact on the young but we ‘oldies” will remember him as a young man and one of The Convairs, a lively trio in which Johnny’s banjo-playing skills were applauded – I can still hear

them singing “Little boxes on the hillside; little boxes made of ticky-tacky...”.

Having lived in Howick for many years, Johnny was also admired for his wider stage repertoire and his strong connection to the Howick Little Theatre. He will be missed and remembered.

Finally, I cannot let the amazing ANZAC Day commemorations go unmentioned. ANZAC Day here in NZ and in Turkey, as well as outstanding TV ONE programming documenting many aspects of Gallipoli and the First World War World, somehow made our little everyday grizzles seem inane.

where were you raised, and when did you move to hunua?

I was born in Auckland, one of five children from Dutch parents who immigrated to New Zealand, although I also lived in Holland for a year when I was 10. I lived in the Bucklands Beach/Howick area from 1976 and moved to Hunua in 1998. We bought 50 acres so we could give our children a taste of the country lifestyle.

Did you grow up around horses, were you a member of a pony club and do you still ride?

I come from a very ‘non-horsey’ family, but I managed to get my own horse when I was 16.

My father then felt he was missing out when my mum, sister and I spent so much time with horses so he started buying racehorses and set up a small breeding concern at our farm in Orere Point in the early 1980s. I helped school the racehorses occasionally and was groom for the yearlings when they went to the sales.

I was a member of Howick Pony Club, which was located where Papakura Athletic Club is now. I still ride and compete in dressage up to level 2, as well as riding for pleasure. I also instruct.

in short, what benefits do pony clubs provide to members?

They provide an opportunity for members (aged 5-25 years) to sit and achieve certificates from D up to A and H level, which involves all aspects of riding and looking after horses – we define this as horsemastership.

Also, they provide the Equine Training Coaches Programme from D to A level as a qualification for coaches and the Equine Certificate Programme for those without horses to gain knowledge.

Pony club is designed to deliver fun

for everyone. From those riding for pleasure, to the most competitive, we provide games, dressage, showjumping, camps and adventures so all can participate. Most of our famous eventing riders – including Mark Todd and Andrew Nicolson – came from pony clubs so they certainly do help develop competitive riders.

why did you put your hat in the ring for the role of fDPC district commissioner?

I was asked to take on the role as no one else was available or had the time and energy. Everyone at FDPC are volunteers dedicated to ensuring pony club continues to provide great equine experiences well into the 21st century.

I love pony club and so does my daughter, so I hope that what leadership I can provide will enable all members in the district to have positive, fun adventures with their ponies and achieve their equine dreams and goals.

generally, what does your role entail and what have you accomplished so far?

My role involves trying to ensure branches are supported by organising certificates and providing help with any concerns or complaints. Also, helping plan events, so members can experience games, ribbon day, showjumping, dressage and team ODEs [one day events] in a relaxed competition.

While I do enjoy it, trying to keep pony club a positive experience and everyone happy can be quite a challenge at times!

So far, I have started to streamline the process for gaining C+ and B certificates so it is more cost effective, uncomplicated and examined at a consistent standard. Also, ensuring all our FDPC team competitions are

run to a high standard and the rules are clear and transparent is important. My next goal is to improve links/communication with branch members so everyone understands the work FDPC does.

how has membership fared with the growth of urban areas?

I am not sure about the exact number of members, but sadly the number of pony clubs has declined due to the spread of Auckland City. The biggest challenge is availability of land, as some branches only exist due to the generosity of farmers.

I like to think pony clubs will survive for the next 100 years. Some have expanded by developing adult riding clubs, which seems to provide more support for all activities; I am sure this will help membership increase.

Improving links with Equestrian Sports

NZ and trying to make rules more consistent between them and the New Zealand Pony Club Association could also help. And providing more grassroots competitions, so those who are new to riding can experience events is an important step.

As you’re also gM at the Counties Manukau Kindergarten Association, how do you find the time to attend to your duties at fDPC?

I am very busy, but I feel it’s important to give back to our community. As a trained and registered teacher, I enjoy coaching at pony club and I love working with children and horses. I get a great buzz from seeing children have fun with their equine friends; it makes the hard work all worthwhile!

with regards to your work with children, if you could be Minister of Education for one day, what would you do first?

I would provide all decile one and two schools with a free early childhood education programme and before and after school service, as well as free meals for all children.

if you could invite any three people (living or dead) to dinner, who and why?

My mum, who died when I was only 20. I miss talking to her about family and my children.

Nelson Mandela. He was such a great leader, and whatever challenges he faced, he never lost hope and never gave up on achieving his goals.

Hillary Clinton. She has had to reinvent herself several times, and when things did not go well, she always appeared strong and in control. I need to know her secrets especially when making tough decisions!

Although the dairy days of Kiwi comedian, Tarun Mohanbhai may be far behind him, the inspiration they served remains as close as ever.

Drawing on his background as an Indian lad growing up in Auckland, Tarun (aka ‘That Indian Guy’), says his comedy has been widely embraced.

“Loads of my comedy and a couple of my plays – particularly in the early days – were based around working in the dairy. Indian content is quite universal and my material is more generic than being Kiwi-based, so it’s quite accessible to all,” he says.

“Comedy is fantastic for breaking down barriers. It helps us understand each other and our environment, while allowing people to relax and take a break from more serious business. Sometimes people just want to laugh, and it doesn’t matter how you give that to them, just as long as you can!”

While laughter may be good medicine in treating cultural ignorance, these days political correctness can be counter-productive, Tarun explains.

“It’s good for us to poke fun at our own cultures. unfortunately, the world’s so ‘PC’ now and people are so easily offended; it’s ridiculous! Personally, I’m offended when people rip others off or aren’t nice to one other, rather than when they tell jokes!

“The only people who can get away with ethnic material are ethnic people themselves, otherwise it’s quickly deemed as racist. People say ‘you shouldn’t be racist’, but that’s not fair... our parents were racist, why can’t we be racist too?” he quips.

And, ironically, this can also hinder minority representation, he adds.

“There’s still a lack of representation for minorities on stage and screen because the parts, largely, don’t exist. It’s silly, but I think people are scared to write parts for minorities in case they balls it up and cause offence!”

Although a self-confessed ‘class clown’ during his school days – at Sunnyhills School, Farm Cove Intermediate and Pakuranga College – Tarun took to the stage not so much as a duck to water... more like a fish out of its depth!

“I always liked to make people laugh, but I was really shy. I didn’t like talking in front of audiences, so doing comedy was a challenge. To this day I still get nervous,” he says.

“Weirdly enough, I was into aerobics in the early ‘90s and became really good at it. I did demonstrations locally promoting the gym and that helped me overcome being the centre of attention.”

After ‘getting physical’, Tarun sought a little Irish courage in order to make a first foray into stand-up during an open mic night at Kitty O’Brien’s Freeman’s Bay tavern in 1996.

“I watched for about a year until I built up the nerve, but it was awesome and went amazingly well!” he says.

“However, I learnt very quickly that it’s not your first, but the second gig where you die on your ass! you think you need a new seven minutes [of material], but soon learn that seven minutes can last a long time in comedy!”

Opportunities followed, and a year after his stand-up debut Tarun became best newcomer at Quest of the Fest (now the Raw Comedy Quest). He then appeared at the NZ International Comedy Festival (1998), and was nominated for the prestigious Billy T Award (2002).

“Being nominated for, or winning, a Billy T really lifts your profile. That year a bunch of us were up, including Darbs [Rhys Darby] and Dai Henwood, who won it. It was a tough group.

“I was disappointed not to win, but happy to be nominated, that I had a good show and, as that was the year I first did my play, D’arranged

Marriage, it helped kick-start my career.

“By the next year I was performing at the Sydney Opera House with my own show... there aren’t many comedians who can say that!”

D’arranged Marriage, is a one-man

show which follows a young Indian boy (Sanjay) and his efforts to avoid an arranged marriage. It has enjoyed a run of roughly 12 years and is still performed by Tarun (or his business partner, Raj Varma) in venues worldwide.

“Raj lives in New york – he actually went to Edgewater College, although I didn’t know him back then. He co-wrote D’arranged Marriage which has been going forever and been well received,” Tarun says.

The play’s success caused offers to pour in and, despite a short return to a day job during the financial crisis, Tarun has worked solidly in comedy since; something he never believed possible when first leaving his dad’s dairy and undertaking various day

jobs prior to his big break.

“I didn’t think a fulltime living from comedy was a reality, and back in the day it really wasn’t. But it’s been good to me and I’ve since worked on a wide range of projects, including TV shows.”

Today, he and fellow comedian, Nick Rado, are largely focused on directing and performing with Laugh Club NZ Ltd, which runs comedy nights throughout the country and will be performing at uxbridge on May 15.

With the daily bread accounted for, Tarun says it’s his friends and colleagues – including comedians such as Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords), Rhys Darby, Te Radar, Peter Rowley

and the late Ewen Gilmour – who have influenced him most.

“I love Te Radar’s comedy; it’s really random with a non-conventional approach; that’s why I like Rhys’ work as well. And I’ve become good friends with Bret and Jemaine. In their show, they actually have a shop [Mohumbhai and Son], named after me. Which is even funnier because they managed to spell Mohanbhai wrong!” he chuckles.

“Everyone says I’m funnier off stage, when I’m relaxed and just hanging out being a dick. Rhys says ‘just do this on stage!’. But because I’m still so shy, I need to plan ahead to a certain degree; I get my fair share of laughs, though, and that’s what it’s really all about.”

FEST’ NOT FAMINE FOR LAuGH-STARVEDAs Kiwis wrap their laughing gear around this year’s NZ International Comedy Festival (curtain falls May 17), the serious business of comedy begins as aspiring stand-ups put their talents to the test.

Pakuranga-raised comedian, Tarun Mohanbhai, says the festival is instrumental in providing the show business breaks (or breakdowns!) budding comedians need.

“The festival has been fantastic in nurturing new comics, providing the opportunity to do

a full hour, and by helping them develop a following,” he says.

“I first did the Fest’ in ’98; I really enjoyed it and it helped launch my career, as it has for many others. Thanks to the calibre of comedy coming through, it’s gone ahead in leaps and bounds and offers a feast of entertainment.”

Day seven, the rain had stopped and the wind had died down, but that wasn’t much consolation as I pulled on my soaking wet clothes. The breakfast of champions (steak and cheese pie and a hot chocolate) at Wakefield bakery perked me up, and with lots of food and fluids on board I set off for Picton, 125km away.

After six days of navigating through totally remote to sparsely populated areas, Nelson was quite a contrast with its traffic, people, houses, businesses and shops – I rode past a McDonalds for heaven’s sake – and I didn’t like it despite the most excellent cycle path network. But it wasn’t long until the route had us off-road once again, navigating a dedicated mountain bike path towards Maitia dam.

The route had one more major climb, the Maungatapu Saddle, of which the route instructions said, and I quote, ‘bastard of a climb ahead, it’s ok to cry’. Well, I felt like crying after pushing my damn bike up a massive gradient for an hour and a half.

It was a matter of push, take a step, grab the brakes so the bike doesn’t roll back, take another step, and repeat. Then to top things off, I punctured on the rocky descent. Eventually I rolled into Pelorus for an overpriced lunch, then it was back on SH6 for a pleasant, undulating ride into Havelock, through the stunning and a somewhat hilly Queen Charlotte Drive into Picton, arriving at 6.30pm.

With more than 11 hours pushing and riding under my belt. I was feeling tired but my legs weren’t complaining (although my backside certainly was). I’d been fantasising about a big juicy burger and fries for hours so my first stop before hunting out accommodation was a takeaway joint. I took my time at dinner, chilling out and enjoying the meal.

Looking at the cue sheet I realised that Blenheim, and the finish in Seymour Square where this epic adventure started seven days ago, was only 65km away. A Friday finish was on the cards, two full days ahead of the 10pm Sunday cut-off.

I knew the 40km stretch over the Port underwood Hills (the longer, gravel route to Blenheim) had three really big climbs with the rest being ‘hilly’. Assuming I could average 15km/h, I’d be done and dusted by 11.30pm. No sweat.

Once again I prepared for a challenging night ride by layering up and fitting lights to me and the bike. After a quick stop at the 4 Square for fluids and bars I was off, totally focused on completing the Brevet. It was so close I could taste it.

Well, those climbs were not only big, they were long and drawn out. But I was on a mission, and the drizzle that had set in didn’t faze me. A couple of hours into the hills I lost the sensational views to darkness, and from there it was simply a matter of peering into the night, my headlight illuminating the raindrops as I spun up the hills in the easiest gear.

There was no way I was going to get off and push, not now. So onwards I pedalled, and after 40km I was out of the Port underwood area and on a nice flat run to home. I had 25km to go, but it was almost 11pm so I’d have to get a move on if I wanted to finish before midnight.

With that thought in mind I forgot about the 1125km I had already

done, and looked at the run to the square as a 25km time trial. I went for it, watching my bike computer like a hawk, and literally raced up to the fountain in Seymour Square at 11.58pm.

I was euphoric. My adrenalin was pumping and although I was past the point of sheer exhaustion I found the strength to climb into the fountain and hoist my fully laden bike up over my head.

The Brevet isn’t a race, and there are no officials at the finish. you simply ride into the square, and you’re done. However, much to my surprise and delight a local couple of hot rodding mates, Luton and Bully, had been following my progress online and were there to welcome me home.

And, to top things off Luton poured me a bourbon, in a real glass with ice, and said, ‘here ya go mate, you’ve earned it’. Quite honestly, that was the best bourbon I’ve ever had.

Of all the mental things I’ve done (my wife’s description, not mine) the Kiwi Brevet was the hardest by far.

I’d cycled for 80 hours and 15 minutes (including photo and food stops), done 1164km (an extra 14km due to navigational errors and sightseeing detours) and had just over 20,000

metres of elevation gain – in other words the equivalent to riding straight up for 20km.

I was often low on food and I drank water from rivers to prevent dehydration. I travelled areas so remote that carrying a personal location device was essential in case things went pear-shaped and rescuing was needed.

My butt was raw, I was 5kg lighter than when I started, I’d been pushed so far out of my comfort zone that I thought I’d never find my way back, and I had experienced parts of the country few people will ever see.

yes, there were some extreme lows, but they were totally outweighed by the highs and the immense satisfaction of finishing – some 70 riders started; just over half finished. I can honestly say that I enjoyed the gruelling Brevet experience – even if I did have to take an extra week off work to recover.

Would I do another one? Ask me again when I can sit down properly.

Although Kiwi netball veteran, Katrina Grant, has her finger on the ‘Pulse’, the great defender still favours the advantages of home.

Born in Papakura, Katrina was raised in Beachlands where her rise to sporting stardom began. She says the area still holds a special place in her heart, despite now plying her trade as captain of the Central Pulse in Wellington.

“I’m really good friends with Chris Hull, the director of sport at Howick College. He helped me balance sport and school work when I was there,” she says. “I keep in contact and try to visit at least once a year. It’s hugely important for the Ferns to stay connected with the grassroots; it helps build the game, but also allows us to give back to something which has given us so much.”

Katrina’s hoop dreams developed while playing for Pohutukawa Coast Netball Club, Howick-based Eastern Netball, Howick College and, later, Auckland Girl’s Grammar. Skills learnt on local courts were to help these dreams become realised.

“I was lucky enough to be in my school Open A in third form, so I suppose I was spotted early. Howick College helped me develop skills and fuelled my love of the game. I moved to Eastern when I was 12. It was run by Paula and Lyn Bailey and they helped me excel and taught me tough love!

“Perhaps most importantly, the people I met during this time and the girls I played with were awesome!”

While professional ambitions saw her fly south, under contract to the Otago Rebels (a forerunner to the ANZ Championship’s Southern

Steel), a homecoming is not out of the question. “I only left Auckland because I didn’t make the Auckland Diamonds [forerunner to the Northern Mystics], so I looked elsewhere. I haven’t found my way back home yet, but after moving to the Pulse, I do seem to be slowly making my way back up the country!” she says.

“However, in a professional arena we want to be loyal and we all aim for that. But, like any other job, if you are going to get more out of your career somewhere else then it is worth moving. unfortunately, that can mean loyalty must sometimes take a backseat.”

Still, loyalty has been a strong suit for Katrina as a Silver Fern. Since her debut in 2008, the defender has clocked up 64 test caps during an impressive career. The Silver Ferns Commonwealth Games victory over the Australian Diamonds was perhaps her most precious accomplishment.

“The win at the 2010 Commonwealth Games was a massive highlight for me. Winning a Gold Medal for New Zealand was the most amazing experience; it’s something I will treasure for the rest of my life.”

Primarily a goal keeper or goal defender, Katrina doesn’t envy shooters, such as long-time teammate (Pulse and Ferns), Irene Van Dyke. “Irene is a worldwide netball icon. I’ve been lucky to have played with her and she’s one of the nicest and most gracious people. It makes training at 6am, or those tough days, that much easier. She always has a smile and it’s super contagious. One word? Legend!

“Shooters have a ridiculously hard job, so the more credit and praise we give them, the higher their confidence

– which is hugely important. Plus we defenders don’t like the limelight,” she quips.

And just as rivalry between batsmen and bowlers in the nets, or forwards and backs in rugby can be beneficial, contention on court is important between shooters and defenders.

“Of course there’s rivalry; at training we’re constantly battling each other. It gets heated, but it’s about helping each other become better players. As soon as we leave training, we’re friends again.”

As preparations for the World Cup continue, Katrina is focused on winning the trans-Tasman ANZ Championship with the Central Pulse. Despite New Zealand-based teams securing just one ANZ title from seven since the competition began, changing fortunes are always on the cards in sport, Katrina says.

“We could still win the championship. We have the calibre of players; we just have to put that together into winning performances.

“The Aussie teams have so much more depth than those in New Zealand, but that doesn’t mean they will always be better than us. And there’s no way we can have more or less teams from either country; I think it is balanced the way it is.”

NZ’s best defenceOn court (or in, for that matter), a good defence makes all the difference. Fortunately, former local netballer, Katrina Grant, has this aspect covered for the Silver Ferns, as she discussed with JON RAWLINSON.

Although the third time wasn’t quite so lucky for Black Cap, Ace and Howick Pakuranga cricketer, Kyle Mills, throughout a hat trick of World Cups the local pace-man has clocked up some serious time at the wicket.

Following retirement earlier this month, EastLife would like to wish Kyle all the best for the future.

Similarly, we wish All Black, Auckland Blues and Pakuranga rugby outside back, Charles Piutau all the luck of the Irish in his move to ulster (set for July next year). While he may still play a role in the All Blacks’ World Cup campaign later this year, either way we hope he’ll be back in Black (and blue and green!) in future. On the bright side, Jerome Kaino (one-

time Saint Kentigern College star) has re-signed with the NZRu (New Zealand Rugby union) until 2018. Let’s hope the Blues captain can help turn the franchise’s season around.

GOLD FOR SILVER (FERNS)? When the Silver Ferns shoot for stardom (and the hoop) during the Netball World Cup later this year, Beachlands-raised Katrina Grant is likely to be in their number.

However, as our cricketers discovered recently, glory could be cut short should Matilda go a waltzing again! And yet, Katrina remains “extremely confident”.

“It’s been a long time between World Cup titles, so it’s up to this group to get the job done. But I think we can claim another; we wouldn’t be training this hard if we didn’t believe it was possible!”

Although the Ferns have not savoured the taste of Cup victory since 2003, their record suggests the team is a real threat to Australia defending its title. And Katrina adds World Cup netball is “definitely not” a two horse race.

“The 2014 Commonwealth Games proved that. Both Australia and New Zealand narrowly beat England, Jamaica was right up there and Malawi gave us a great run in pool play too,” she says.

However, there’s no doubt Ferns v Diamonds fixtures will set sparks flying, during which Katrina says coach, Waimarama Taumaunu, will be vital to New Zealand’s chances.

“Wai’ is one of the best coaches I’ve had. She knows the game inside and out and has helped me develop great knowledge and skills that I’m not sure I would have without her. For that I am truly grateful.

“What would I do if I was to be given her job? I’d hire Wai’ quick smart as my assistant and let her take over!” she laughs.

And at least one Aussie will be singing God Defend New Zealand, Ferns’ assistant coach and ex-Diamond legend, Vicki Wilson.

“We joked about whether she knew the words when Vic was first appointed! She’s a great lady and there is no doubt she’s on our side all the way!”

A pleasant place – MELLONS BAy

When William Mellon, his wife, Harriet, and four of their children sailed into Auckland Harbour on the Oriental Queen in September, 1849 they probably never expected life would get as good as it turned out.

They were first sent to Onehunga but later moved to Howick. Not to swamp lands where the earlier Fencibles had settled, but to a beautiful, north-facing bay, where they farmed for many years.

The area became known as Mellons Bay after the family and had nothing whatsoever to do with melons – rock, honey or watermelon although the latter is somewhat appropriate.

The original Gaellic spelling was O’Meallain, derived from “meall” which means pleasant. And what a pleasant bay it has remained.

School children have learned to swim in its waters; a camping ground once attracted holiday-makers and, now, it is one of several entry points to the well-used Awaroa Walkway.

Of course, even the most protected bay can deliver some surprises. Mellons Bay is listed as a Free Beach, meaning nudists are permitted to

swim there. However they mainly use the southern end of the beach away from the carpark and usually for just an hour or so each side of high tide.

Once a pohutukawa log shielded the area but that’s now gone, and so have the nudists (mostly) which may or may not be a relief to locals.

During the Second World War the Howick coastline was dotted with gun emplacements. NZ Museums and the Howick Historical Society both have a photograph (circa 1942) of an army tank parked on the grass during field exercises at Mellons Bay. It is an eerie

feeling to sit there now, and imagine the presence of a tank adding a harsh note to the environment.

Over recent decades, Howick’s population has burgeoned but talking to Mellons Bay residents one discovers many have lived there since childhood.

Visitors to the primary school can also see that multiple generations of families have learned to read and write within the same school grounds.

William Mellon (born 1807) died in

1880 from heart disease. His wife, Harriet, remarried and moved to Napier. Harriet and William’s children – by then adults – mostly moved to the Hawkes Bay region too.

So, when looking in the phone book today there are not many Mellons to be found living in Auckland. yet Mellons Bay remains one of Howick’s most beautiful areas, a pleasant bay which is a pleasure to behold.

One piece of advice I would give to my daughter about motherhood is that nothing prepares you for it, but the best approach is to get totally stuck in and always keep your sense of humour. It’s always great to have a laugh together, play at the park, kick a ball, sing along to favourite songs, read a book and cuddle up on the couch together. It’s not the amount of time that counts – it’s quality time. Being a mum is super special!

My grandmother told me “your kids come to live with you, you don’t go and live with your kids!” In other

words, kids are very adaptable to any environment so don’t change your life too much when you have them.

Keep doing all the things you love that feed your soul; bring the children along and teach them to feed their souls too. you are just their caretaker and only have them for such a short amount of time, so be a role model for what you would like them to become as you are their first teacher. They learn by watching you! Dance, sing, laugh, cry with them.

My uppermost piece of advice is to keep to a routine with baby from birth. I still advise young mums the first five years are so important. As well as routine, it’s very important to have boundaries. This teaches children to have discipline and respect so they can achieve goals

as they grow. I always encouraged my children to participate in various sports and then define which one they wanted to focus on. Sport is important, not only for fitness but for healthy, energetic minds.

My other biggie is, once children reach teenage years, to be sure they understand the value of independence. It’s also best not to expect children to become exactly what you want them to be. If you’ve done your job well and know you did your best by always being there with good meals and a safe, warm home with lots of love, then you have done your best.

Nepalese artist Sarj Hada hasn’t yet given up a 9 to 5 or rather 9 to 3 job to devote himself wholly to art, but few moments of the day go by when he isn’t exploring his personal creativity or planning new works.

And, the now Howick resident says his dream is to own a place where he can live and paint.

“My wife Kerri and I are aiming for a property where we have our home, a working studio, gallery and cafe. We want to open the studio to visitors so they can see an artist at work and, because we both have hospitality experience, a cafe is the ideal complementary business.”

But that’s in the future. For now Sarj is concentrating on putting up four works at The Original Art Sale, May 14-17 at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau (see events page 13).

These will reflect his latest focus – dynamic black and white works depicting noted leaders, musicians and activists.

Employed part-time at the Manukau Institute of Technology as a casual chef and tutor, Sarj paints whenever he can and makes a point of putting most Fridays aside to concentrate on painting. “It isn’t something you can casually put off to another day. I am consumed with discovering where I can go, and what mediums I can probe; I don’t want my work to become static.”

Born and raised in Kathmandu, Sarj comes from an artistic, wider family whose gifts embrace woodcraft, stone carving, and more. “The Nepalese people are essentially expressive across many different art forms and styles. I was always considered good at sketching which I pursued for many years but never really thought of as anything more than a hobby.”

At 19 Sarj headed for Sydney where he spent 11 years and while working in hospitality, he was given the opportunity to train as a chef.

Afterwards, he worked in various restaurants during which time he also met wife, Rotorua-born, Kerri [then McGregor] – the couple married in New Zealand earlier this year after moving here 18 months ago this year.

However, it was while living in Australia that Sarj became serious about painting. “After settling in Sydney, I still dabbled in art but it was a television documentary on a young Aborigine whose art was making a big impact that inspired me to go further. I was fascinated and thought, ‘I want to do that’.”

From then on Sarj says he was gripped with a passion to paint, moving from sketching to abstract works first in oils then acrylics.

More recently he began exploring a new method, painting in black and white to produce powerful images – Martin Luther King, Che Guevara, Jim Morrison, Metallica, Bob Dylan Muhammad Ali, Ned Kelly and even a provocative take on graffiti artist, Banksy’s ‘cheeky’ depiction of Mona Lisa showing her bottom.

Individual paintings can take anything

from two to eight weeks but Sarj says there’s no cutting corners. “While portraiture make up a good deal of my portfolio at present, for The Original Art Sale I am also working on a version of a Joy Division album cover which is taking time and patience.”

Excited about the upcoming exhibition – his first since coming to New Zealand – Sarj says, historically artists find it difficult to make a living from their work.

Therefore a job is essential to support his artistic ardour and fortunately, his role at MIT fits the bill. “I’m actually keen to pursue a teaching qualification and while tutoring art would be the ideal, I enjoy teaching and mentoring hospitality students too – working with food is very creative and young chefs can unleash their own sense of artistry.”

And, if anyone knows the value of a mentor it’s Sarj although not in the conventional sense.

“All my guidance has come from the hundreds of galleries, exhibitions and libraries I have visited. I try to learn

from everyone – old masters through to modernist painters.

“I guess if it had been possible to study under those I admire greatly it would have been Jackson Pollock because his abstract paintings are inspirational, Vincent Van Gogh because he didn’t care about money, he just had an insatiable love of painting and Brett Whiteley, an Australian abstract artist whose political bent has captured my imagination.”

While there are still uncertainties about what direction his future might take, there is nothing uncertain about Sarj’s decision to make New Zealand his and Kerri’s permanent home, to qualify as a teacher, to eventually own a gallery/studio and to never stop painting.

• When the 7.9 earthquake hit Nepal last month, Sarj’s family, still living in Kathmandu, escaped the worst of the damage. Their home, in an area of more solid houses, suffered cracking but did not collapse. At last word, the family were mostly camping outdoors but had contacted Sarj to say they were safe.

A white Christmas in Prague may sound romantic but flying from Bristol with a sniffling seven-week-old in tow is perhaps not the way to set out to see this much admired capital for the first time.

We had been staying with the in-laws aka doting grandparents in Devon (a two-hour drive from Bristol) and the hubby was set on showing me around his favourite European city in the Czech Republic.

“Let’s go to Prague,” he said. “There’ll be snow and Christmas markets,” he said.

And that’s how we ended up catching an EasyJet flight (Britain’s equivalent of Jetstar) to the Czech capital, just a week before Christmas.

I’d heard much about this fairytale city, and the airport was relatively impressive compared to terminals such as London’s Heathrow and the united States’ LAX.

However, on leaving the airport it was a different story. Wet, grey, miserable and corralled by unkempt buildings, this was not the Prague I imagined.

Such was the impact of communism on the historic city known as the heart of Europe, my other half explained.

We stayed at the Hilton Prague which was in a commercial part of town, not the Hilton Prague, Oldtown.

The weather was unseasonably warm (in the region of 10°C) despite the city receiving snowfall two weeks before our visit.

Having arrived in the evening we were keen to explore, finding a quaint underground tavern just round the corner from the hotel.

As we traipsed down the winding stone steps, smoke billowed from below – a smoke-free city this was not.

I was worried initially about exposing the baby to second hand smoke but most locals appeared to cease puffing after noticing us.

Service was brusque but acceptable. The Czechs, in general, were adequately hospitable.

A waitress unloaded a full bread basket on our table accompanied by the largest lump of margarine I had ever seen.

And this is where I discovered that Czech food was piping hot comfort food at its best – not easy on the eye but warming the cockles of the heart (and stomach!).

A traditional goulash soup and cesnecka (garlic broth) later, we were certainly feeling rosy to the tips of our toes. And yes, both came with more bread – I could feel my cheeks ballooning with every carb-laden mouthful.

We ate and drank like kings; the bill coming to a mere $15 NZD (the conversion from Czech Koruna).

From our hotel, transport was quick and efficient on the Prague Metro; in a matter of minutes we could zoom into Oldtown Square, Prague’s main attraction and home to the Christmas markets.

There, magnificent Christmas trees towered, lights twinkled and mulled wine steamed.

unashamedly, a tourist trap, there were stalls peddling an array of festive baubles, trinkets and keepsakes – we bagged an elaborate gingerbread star, medovina (Czech honey wine), painted eggs and ornaments amongst other things.

From there we walked along the Vltava River heading towards Charles Bridge, and on towards Prague Castle – a mighty 4km that felt like walking

on hot coals in three-inch heels.

Of course sensible sneakers would’ve been my choice had I known in advance the length of the walk.

Coals and heels aside, it was highly worth it. Intricate architecture stretching for miles on a cobbled pathway and gilt statues depicting Christian themes – I felt as if I’d been transported back in time.

Alas, we were no time travellers – after a catch-up with some old friends at La Casa Argentina (a jungle-inspired pro-carnivore restaurant) as well as a little more shopping and a few more cobbled twists and turns the next day, our stay had come to an end.

So back we went to Prague airport, and a return to chilly England, bidding ‘na shledanou’ (goodbye in Czech) to old world charm and a brisk ‘brrrr’ to a much colder Bristol!

We all know that getting dinner on the table every night isn’t always easy – there’s planning, shopping and cooking, then the clean up – but that doesn’t mean it has to take hours of your time each day.

One of the simplest ways to ensure easy cooking is to do a little meal planning. Don’t worry if you’re not the organised type. It doesn’t take much time or organisational skills to reap the benefits of planning a week or two’s meals in advance.

But what little time is spent on meal planning leads to faster meals, less stress around meal time and more meals at home. It is no secret that order and organisation help with dinner time madness.

Here are some tips on ways to save time in the evening, giving you more time with your family or to relax.

• organisation – Check the meal planner in the morning to see if any meat needs defrosting/preparing (slow cooker) or marinating.

Having ingredients in accessible and labelled containers will help when writing a shopping list as you can see what you have at a glance.

Always have a plan B – a back-up meal in your pantry/freezer that you can cook in 10 minutes and for which you have ALL of the ingredients.

Instead of having a pile of cookbooks, photocopy your favourite recipes and keep them in a handy

place in the kitchen.

• Shopping – Begin with meal planning for the week to ensure you have a concise shopping list. Put the meal planner on the fridge for the week.

Stock up on a variety of core ingredients that can be used to whip up a meal at a moment’s notice. These might include: tinned tomatoes, frozen fruit/veggies, pastry, stock, pasta, dried fruit, eggs, herbs and spices.

• Cooking – Cook once and eat twice. Save yourself time by cooking double quantity and freeze half for another meal. Batch cooking is a great way to get ahead for those busy nights you may have.

use the slow cooker and put it on in the morning – it will certainly become your best friend. It’s a great way to cook less expensive cuts of meat providing the family with tasty tenderness!

With careful planning, you can create two very different meals from the same main ingredient (i.e. roast beef to a shepherds pie).

Finally, every family is different and as little ones grow the demands on your time will change.

These practical, time-saving tips are simple to implement and will ease the juggle of parenthood. Even if you use only a couple of these tips, you will save time in the kitchen and have more time to do what you like best.

James Patterson thrills

King’s College rower, Oliver Maclean credits his selection in Rowing New Zealand’s under-18 North Island team to his school’s culture of success.

Sixteen-year-old Oliver, who has been selected to be part of a crew of four, shows the importance of attitude.

Although he has rowed for the past three years, his two most recent seasons have been marred by injury.

King’s College Head of Rowing, Nick Lloyd and coach, Peter Jansen have overseen a disciplined recovery programme to ensure Oliver’s form is at its best and this has paid off.

Having been nominated by Peter Jansen, Oliver joined 19 other top rowers at the Lake Karapiro selection trials during the term one holidays. After erg testing and seat racing, a quad and an eight were chosen.

Mother, Vikki Maclean says: “Seeing Ollie fight his way back to fitness after such severe setbacks has been quite inspirational.”

yet Oliver is quick to point out how inspired he’s been by those around him. He praises his coach, classmates and fellow King’s rowers – Edward Reeves, in particular.

Several years ago, Edward was also selected for the North Island Rowing Team. He then went on to win a scholarship to yale university where he now rows while completing a degree in economics.

Judging by his current success, Oliver isn’t likely to slow down anytime soon. His classmates, fellow rowers and King’s College Old Collegians will be cheering him on well into the future.

I would like to use this month’s column to highlight just how amazing veterinary nurses are and to give you a few insights into just how talented, dedicated compassionate and valuable they are.

Over the years I have been lucky enough to work with some amazing nurses who really have changed the lives of our patients and clients. They have also been crucial in helping me to do a better job as a veterinarian.

Here are a few reasons why I think they are fabulous:

• They have Ninja-like refl exes that keep us vets safe from fl ying teeth, claws and feet.

• One nurse can juggle three phone lines, two clients at reception and still have a smile on her face!

• During long surgeries they support us and keep the patients safe. They maintain the anaesthetic, acceptable blood pressure levels and animal body temperatures.

• They keep the vets topped up with suture material and instruments as necessary and, with all that, they are still able to be a sounding board for the vet, chat to us and tell us we are awesome just when we need it most!

• They do their job just because they love it, not because they want to be rich.

• They are not afraid to help a client to the carpark when they are juggling small children, bags of food and a labrador that is going home after surgery.

• They will stay back late if an animal is in need and not complain if they are going to be late to an important date that has been planned for three months!

• They provide a much needed shoulder to cry on when a best mate passes away and seem to have an endless supply of compassion.

• They happily (almost always!) clean up all sorts of bodily fl uids, and will spend hours coaxing an animal to eat , nursing and cleaning wounds. They willingly help a patient become mobile and walk out to toilet with that pet as many times as necessary.

Being a veterinary nurse is really a vocation that does attract strong, resilient and special people; people whom I am lucky to be working alongside.

Owning a pet brings many joys but when illness and old age strike pet owners usually have many questions but this month DR ANDREA GITS praises the dedication of vet nurses.

Vet nurses ARE AWESOME!

If you have a dog, chances are that someone has given you their opinion on feeding raw eggs.

unfortunately, there are many sceptics keeping this valuable protein source out of the canine diet. They argue eggs are too high in cholesterol, or, most popularly, will cause a biotin defi ciency. Well, I disagree – and here’s why.

Firstly, eggs are not only a great source of protein, but they are also jam-packed with nutrients. Eggs provide vitamin A, vitamin B12, ribofl avin, folate, iron, selenium, and fatty acids – and did I mention the protein?

The protein in an egg is essentially the most complete protein on the planet! That means that an egg contains all of the essential protein building blocks, called amino acids, and in all the best proportions.

Secondly, when it comes to cholesterol, dogs don’t experience the same arterial damage from cholesterol as their human counterparts. In fact, the cholesterol in egg yolks helps to achieve a healthy, glossy coat.

Lastly, if anyone has scared you off with the term “biotin defi ciency” please do some of your own research on the subject before you allow the word ‘defi ciency’ to enter your head!

First of all, what is biotin? Biotin is

a B vitamin, important in cellular growth, metabolism of fatty acids and in maintaining healthy skin and coat.

It is true that egg whites contain avidin, which is a biotin inhibitor, however, egg yolks are very high in biotin – so, if offering the whole egg, there’s nothing to worry about!

In any event, and likely due to the yin and yang of whites and yolks, biotin defi ciencies are quite rare and would require a tremendous amount of eggs to induce.

Keep in mind that the nutritional value of an egg is greatly dependent on the chicken that laid it!

unfortunately, most conventionally raised chickens are fed soy products in their daily feed. Some studies have shown that the estrogen-like compounds in soy, called isofl avones, can cause reproductive and growth problems, thyroid and liver disease, and various other health issues.

Therefore, fi nd a reliable source of eggs from free-range chickens which are eating what chickens are supposed to eat! Also, look for local brands or farmers who proudly display that their eggs are GMO-FREE (genetically modifi ed organism).

Bottom line? Whole, raw eggs are an unbeatable complete protein source which can help dogs thrive.

Tooth whitening is a process that lightens stains in the tooth enamel (outer layer) and dentine (inner layer) of teeth, to give them a whiter colour. With improvements in dental health, people are increasingly seeking tooth-whitening treatments to improve their appearance.

ARE ALL TEETH SUITABLE fOR WHITENING?

There are many causes of tooth discolouration, and any given tooth can exhibit one or more sorts of discolouration, from differing causes.

It is therefore important that the cause of tooth discolourations should be identified by a dentist before tooth-whitening treatment is undertaken, as the success of the treatment is very dependent on a correct diagnosis. This normally requires taking a thorough history including radiographs (x-rays), a dietary and a social history.

In some cases, tooth whitening may be difficult or ineffective, for example teeth with staining caused during tooth formation by certain antibiotics.

TOOTH WHITENING MECHANISM

The active ingredient in tooth whitening products is typically hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidising agent which is thought to react with the dark-coloured molecules located within tooth enamel and dentine making them smaller and less-coloured, rendering the tooth ‘whiter’.

It should be noted that not all coloured molecules are susceptible to the action of hydrogen peroxide and so the correct diagnosis is important. The hydrogen peroxide is present in different forms and concentrations depending on the tooth whitening product so it is essential that the instructions given by your dentist are followed.

TOOTH WHITENING METHODS

Tooth whitening can be done at home or in the dental office. Depending on the type of discolouration your

dentist may advise which method or technique is best for you.

• At home – Your dentist will make an impression for a model of your teeth. Then a thin, custom-fitted, clear, plastic tray that fits over your teeth is made for you.

At home you are required to place the whitening gel into the tray, and place the tray over your teeth for up to two hours daily or at night. Though you can see the results after the first day, maximum whitening may take 10-14 days. Your dentist will check on your progress.

• In-surgery – Here, the whitening gel is applied to the tooth by your dentist and a special light is used for up to 20-30 minutes to activate the gel. This process may be repeated a few times to achieve maximum whitening.

SAfETY

Sometimes people will experience increased tooth and gum sensitivity during treatment period. This usually goes away shortly after the treatment is stopped.

Before having your teeth whitened, it is important to have your teeth checked by your dentist as the whitening agent can penetrate through cracks or cavities in your teeth. This can cause damage to the tooth pulp, as well as irritating the gums and lining of the mouth and weakening filling materials.

Tooth whitening may also make old fillings or crowns look darker after treatment, so it is very important to be checked and advised of this before you proceed.

The gym group, curves, recently commissioned a study of 500 new Zealanders of which 41% of women respondents said they didn’t go to the gym because they were scared of looking silly in front of others.

I say if you walk into a gym that is full of Lycra-clad posers, who make you feel uncomfortable, find another gym.

Honestly, there are so many other alternatives out there including women-only gyms such as curves. There are outside, boot camp style training classes all over the Auckland region.

There are small friendly classes run by personal trainers and small training studios, not to mention walking and

running groups, Pilates, yoga, spin…the list goes on and on. There really is something for everyone.

We don’t need therapy. We need to find a form of exercise, whether it is solo, in a group, a class or a gym, that fits our personality and that we can enjoy.

Yes, enjoy! People who exercise, get fit, lose weight, become healthier and stay healthier, all have one thing in common – they have found something that they enjoy.

If you enjoy one type of exercise, and can make a social connection with your fellow exercisers, you are far more likely to train consistently and attain results that are permanent.

Take your time to find somewhere that feels right. Don’t waste your time trying to talk yourself into going

someplace where you feel that you are being judged rather than encouraged.

What you look like in workout gear, and how unfit or overweight you are, is irrelevant.

You need to be encouraged, supported and nurtured; if you are not, go somewhere else!

okay, now for a quick look at ‘Epigenetics 101’. We are all born with a variety of genes inherited from our parents. Among those genes is the coding for a whole lot of stuff from eye colour to height.

unfortunately, also in there are things called ‘genetic predispositions’. This means you may have a predisposition or be susceptible to a certain condition/disease. now the really cool bit is that just because you have a ‘predisposition’ doesn’t mean you will get the condition/disease. You have to switch on the gene to get it.

If you are still with me, you should be wondering how you switch on the gene. usually something in the environment does this. It could be toxins, chemicals, herbicides, pesticides and other nasties. It could also be your lifestyle: a poor diet, poor living choices, lack of exercise or some other issue.

Just because your mother, your mother’s mother and her mother had breast cancer does not mean that you have to get it.

Have you ever wondered how someone like Keith richards from the rolling Stones (can you believe that my daughter does not know who they are?) does not get every disease known to man? He has broken every

single ‘good health’ rule and still parties on.

The answer lies in his genetic predisposition. He is in a sense ‘bullet proof’ because he probably does have the genetic predispositions for the major diseases.

Have you wondered why disease is increasing at an alarming rate? As we move away from healthy living and more towards junk food, use of chemical and minimal exercise, we are most likely switching on more and more disease genes.

I guess the next question is what can you do about it? currently, we don’t do much. We wait until the condition develops and then reach for a cut, burn and drug solution.

We continue our lifestyle until the next episode or a slightly different episode. How many people do you know that were given a second chance, changed nothing and then got sick again?

Getting a chronic disease is not a lottery. Something has happened to cause the disease.

For our bodies to move as they are designed, every joint needs to move freely and with control. This requires a level of mobility and functional strength that can be gained only through regular physical activity.

Flexibility and mobility are aspects of fitness that are often overlooked. At best, we may tack a few simple stretches on to the end of a workout.

There is more, however, to maintaining joint mobility than stretching alone. We need to actively move in a wide range of directions

and perform varied tasks such as reaching up high above the head, twisting in different directions and bending down to the floor to maintain function.

Dynamic movement helps increase blood flow and lubricate your joints. This allows you to stretch and move more effectively.

It is important to note, that it is a combination of both muscle conditioning and flexibility that prevents joint stiffness or restriction.

By moving slowly and with control, exercise and activity helps condition those key postural muscles that support our joints. This allows our other muscles to relax, thus allowing freedom of movement.

While most bakers tend to rise (and shine) at the crack of dawn Becky Williams is more likely to be beating the batter at 11pm oblivious of the late hour as she mixes and blends her own gluten-free products.

“I’ve always been a night owl, early morning rising doesn’t agree with me which is one of the reasons I didn’t like working the 9 till 5 routine after leaving uni. now I work my own hours but that doesn’t mean slacking off. I bake most days; it can be a struggle to take just one day off although I do try; it’s important to balance life.”

many locals will know Becky well. She started selling gluten-free muffins and slices at Howick’s Saturday market some 18 months ago and they were quickly snapped up by shoppers with gluten intolerances.

Since those first few months of trial and error – and just breaking even – she has expanded her range and her market. And she has also installed a totally gluten-free kitchen in a dedicated area of her Howick home.

“In the early days I used the I cook commercial kitchen in Ellerslie. It was brilliant. Although not quite up to standards set for gluten-free food preparation, I just explained to customers that it was completely sanitised before and after use so was as close as I could get to the real thing while deciding if I could make a go of the business. Before going headlong into a new venture, I had to find out if there really was a market for my products.”

And there surely was. Before long this queen of Slices was being asked for more than just muffins and cakes. “There was a real gap in the fresh gluten-free food market especially for savoury items so I also started making pies, pizza and pasta – fettuccine, ravioli and gnocchi.”

But not before her gluten-free commercial kitchen was installed at home. “It’s been absolutely fantastic – streamlined and stainless with all the equipment I need.”

her own, her mum [Lynn] helps a lot. “We’re a family who all loves cooking,” Becky says. “I was just two years old when mum would pop me up on the bench while she baked. It was the same for my sister. Sunday was always baking day when we filled the tins but it was also an anti-stress day; a way to enjoy family time.”

However, when Becky entered the workforce after leaving Auckland university with an undergraduate degree in geography and politics and a postgraduate degree in geography as well as a graduate degree in business from Auckland university of Technology, she never imagined that just months later she would be considering a career in food.

“I adopted a gluten-free diet six years ago after suffering years of poor health – psoriasis, asthma, the stomach pains and being accident prone. It was my dad who first thought some of my problems could be food related. He noticed I often became ill after eating cheese.

“It was then I noticed that whenever I ate cheese it was usually accompanied by gluten-packed foods such as pizza and pasta. I decided to adopt a gluten-free diet and soon noticed an overall improvement in my health and general well being.”

But Becky was still a long way off from taking a career step that would lead to a gluten-free baking career. “Despite my enjoyment of cooking, working in the food industry never occurred to me. It wasn’t until I was six months into my first job after leaving uni that I found myself constantly dreaming about what I would bake at the weekend. I quickly realised I wasn’t in the right job.”

Subsequently, Becky embarked on an nZ Food and Wine Institute course just “to understand how a commercial kitchen should properly operate”. Then she set about experimenting. “I now buy in bulk, mix all my own flours, bring in spices from India

and even source entirely gluten-free chocolate which means I pay nearly double for it.”

While she still sells at the Howick Saturday market, mADETHATWAY also has an online shop and Becky sends out orders on a weekly basis as well as supplying to cafes such as The Apothecary in Picton Street.

“Initially, I worried that I wouldn’t be able to separate work from home but I do and, wonderfully, it works. I choose my own hours to suit my body clock and when I leave, I just shut the door on the oven and walk upstairs.”

Although her working day is spent very much in her own company, out in the marketplace, Becky is used to approaches from customers. “It’s uncanny how many people I meet who suffer from coeliac disease or who have general health issues which appear to be made worse by gluten intake – psoriasis, for example, is just one condition which seems to respond well when gluten is eliminated from one’s diet.

“But, interestingly, some customers who have just gone gluten-free, often on the advice of their doctor, are still reluctant to accept that gluten is the problem or to believe that a gluten-free diet will see an improvement in their health. It’s wonderful when someone comes back and says their life has indeed changed with their altered diet.”

And that’s part of the satisfaction Becky has found since launching mADETHATWAY – helping people discover that gluten-free can help.

However, she is emphatic that going gluten-free doesn’t mean a lifetime of plain, boring food. “I am the ultimate pizza, pasta and pudding person,” she laughs. “They even call me ‘pud’ at home. I just can’t go without dessert. So you could say that’s been part of my mission; to ensure gluten-free diets can still include all the sweet things in life.”

In the world of wine new Zealand is synonymous with sauvignon blanc, specifically, from marlborough (mSB). If a bottle bears the label mSB, it carries a unique, heady pungency and almost explosive acidity – a combo to awaken even the most jaded palate (and person).

But like familiarity, fame can breed contempt and here in its homeland, what was once the ABc (anything but chardonnay club), has turned to SmS, Save me from Sav, with people shying from its brazen charms.

Before signing up as a club member, take a look at a true sophisticate, Dog Point marlborough sauvignon blanc. complex and with a skilfully restrained delivery of mSB’s characteristic power, it is layered in remarkably textured depth.

There are hundreds of mSBs released every vintage and this is one of a handful that I make a point of seeking out. Have it with food, flavoursome hearty food. At my place it stood up to a hearty kedgeree and matched spicy salad and chicken burritos.

A wine of such consistent excellence demonstrates a talented producer. Dog Point has heritage. It was founded by two couples, Ivan and margaret Sutherland and James and Wendy Healy. James and Ivan met at cloudy Bay, where they were respectively oenologist and viticulturist.

unassuming, but opinionated when pushed, these two men set a path for mSB that many have profitably followed. now they are making a similar statement with their marlborough pinot noir.

no fruity and effete lightweight, Dog Point pinot noir is dense, dark and richly coloured. Built like a lithe, muscular dancer it ripples with texture and deep, savoury flavour.

may I suggest how to enjoy? Don’t drink it the day of opening. Enjoy a glass, then re-cork and leave overnight; repeat – if you can be so disciplined. This is a pinot that will age and in drinking this way, reveals itself to you, outstripping many of its peers with a depth of character that will make you a fan.

While vinyl or carpet squares, and stratified or laminated woods may be relatively easy to install, tiles, solid timber and wall to wall carpets are a little trickier to manage.

Holidaying every summer as a kid, and then shifting to mt maunganui as a teenager, I was a well-seasoned fisherman by the time I married. I was experienced when it came to fishing from the ocean, but fresh water fishing was something else.

one day while staying down in Taupo my sister-in-law’s boyfriend invited me to go trout fishing with him down the Tongariro river. I was excited, being my first time river fishing.

“What about a fishing licence,” I asked. “na, we don’t need one. We are fishing up the river, not in the lake and they aren’t spawning at the moment, so it’s sweet.” “cool,” I replied.

It took a little bit of getting used to, but by lunchtime I had mastered the flick of the wrist and had managed to hook two brown trout.

I was pretty forthcoming holding up my catch when I was approached by a couple who asked, “how’s the fishing going?” I explained that although a novice, the art of casting the braided line and fly was paying off.

unfortunately, Kyle, my fishing companion had disappeared and I was left to face the consequences as the couple (who were fisheries officers) issued me with an infringement notice.

I had a sneaky suspicion that Kyle’s cavalier response was not really correct when I quizzed him about the fishing permit, but the excitement of the fishing trip clouded my judgment. I learnt from that lesson and put Kyle’s gung-ho approach down to stupidity, with mine being a mixture of gullibility and ignorance.

industry it is important that I offer my clients the best advice and follow the rules set out in the Building Act and by our Local Building Authority.

Having trust in those who are professionals in their field ensures peace of mind and gives you confidence that you are doing the right thing.

using naivety as an excuse when taking shortcuts or breaking the rules just won’t cut the mustard with the council. It is, therefore, important when undertaking any building work that you identify the following:

• Does the building work need a Building consent or is the work exempt from requiring a Building consent?

• Who can carry out the work?

• What other conditions may apply?

The ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment – www.dbh.govt.nz – has a clear set of guidelines which detail what work requires a Building

consent and what building work is exempt from requiring a Building consent.

With all the problems that have been associated with leaky buildings being prevalent in our minds, why on earth would anyone not follow the rules?

There are lots of exemptions that can be found in the DBH Guidelines, but these must be carried out in accordance with the Building Act – just because a Building consent may not be required, doesn’t give the authority to take shortcuts.

re-cladding is a major issue that I will talk about later in the year, but if you use the following as a rule of thumb you won’t get yourself in trouble:

replacing exterior wall cladding that has failed within 15 years of the cladding being installed, resulting in damage to the wall framing, will require a new Building consent.

Lesson learned From FISHY ADVIcE

march sales figures from rEInZ show yet again an upward movement in the median house price for the greater Howick area. These come on the back of the greatest number of sales for a month since may 2007.

The median hit $878,750, up from February’s $868,500. This represents an increase of just over 1% from February but a 14% increase over the past 12 months. For the march-ended quarter, sale prices on average were ahead by 13.7% from a year ago, and nationally they were ahead by 7.7%.

There were 276 sales in march which totally blitzed February’s 165.

I have been tracking the sales data since January 2007, which was the lead up to the last property cycle boom, and since then (i.e. 99 months of) we have broken the 250 plus sales per month on only seven occasions.

This sharp increase for the month of march didn’t, however, make the year to date sales number better in total for the year ended march 2015 than for the previous 12 month period.

Total sales for 12 months ended march 2015 were 2181 and for year ended march 2014 we had slightly more at 2259.

nationally the same trend showed through – the number of sales in march 2015 across all new Zealand was 20.3% higher than march 2014, and 13% higher in the march quarter from a year ago.

However for the full year ending in march 2015 the change from the previous year was minus 2.1%.

Another figure I have not quoted in the past is the total value of sales for this area which this month hit just

over $272 million – well clear of the next highest month, march 2014, at just over $207 million.

Surprisingly, the next lowest was back in march 2007 at just over $203 million. In between times, January

2009 recorded the lowest total value of sales at $62.6 million (this again being in the period I tracked).

So, while interest rates and supply remain low, it looks like the price increases are here to stay.

However, balance this out with any moves by the Government or reserve Bank, immigration numbers and ongoing market confidence on the high prices, and it is hard to know for how long.

Anyone who thought the recent sunshine meant the summer was still here will surely be thinking differently after the storm that hit over the recent public holiday weekend.

ImPorTS on THE rISEThe used import vehicle market continues to rise, with a 15 per cent increase in the sales of both passenger and commercial vehicles against the same month last year, while the entire market increased 12 per cent.

used imported commercial sales totalled 681 units this February, a 15 per cent increase on the 592 units sold for the same month last year, and the biggest February year-to-date figure since 2008.

Toyota Hiace led with 262 units, followed by the nissan caravan with 61 units and the Toyota Dyna with 31 units.

The used imported passenger segment sold 10,572 units in February, up 15 per cent on last February’s 9155, the best start to the year since 2006.

Suzuki Swift led with 581, with mazda Axela selling 474 units and mazda Demio with 426 units.

Equipped with the latest generation of Ford’s 2.2-litre Duratorq four-cylinder TDci diesel engine, ranger delivers significantly improved fuel efficiency and refinement.

Depending on the market, Ford will offer a standard 2.2-litre engine,

which generates an improved 118kW of power and 385 nm of torque, or a high-efficiency (96kW) variant for up to 22 percent improvement in fuel economy.

From business consultant to award-winning speaker and, now, to television talk show host, cath Vincent could be described as having the gift of the gab.

However, the Half moon Bay local insists she has worked hard to get where she is. “People think I’m a natural but I’m not. Some of it is natural ability but I actually do work really hard so it feels natural.”

The English-born live wire has always aimed high and worked in high-flying jobs for both the Australian and British governments.

Five years ago, while living in Perth, cath felt as if she’d seen it all, done it all and it was time for change. After she attended a personal development course in Fiji, change came rapidly.

meeting long-haired rocker and long-time local, Jesse Wilde, a holiday romance soon blossomed and she moved to new Zealand to be with him. cath also took up public speaking after joining the local BnI business networking group. “It just fell into my lap really!”

In fact, last year she was the recipient of the BrightStar Emerging Speaker Award at the national Speakers Association’s annual gala and has spoken at the internationally renowned TEDx event in Wellington.

But, still restless it was through a friend’s husband that she landed herself a guest spot on TV show, The Beat Goes On which screens on Face TV, Sky channel 83.

That sparked a desire to have her own TV show, and last year the dream became a reality with The Cath Vincent Show launching in october, also on Face TV.

Each 30-minute episode features a guest celebrity and cath’s other half, Jesse, hosts the music segment which features different talents.

Initially, the show was to be funded by Face TV, but cath soon realised that she had different ideals. “We didn’t really want to make the same show. I don’t want to talk about politics or sensational stuff, I want to talk about inspiring content that makes people’s lives better.”

So, she decided to fund the show out of her own pocket. The series also makes money from guest speakers who want to produce quality video content. “Last year we broke even which the general manager of Face TV said is practically unheard of. I’m really proud of that.”

This month, cath debuts her second season and is excited about reaching more viewers with a full marketing and production team, many made up of volunteers.

“You bite off something as big as this and realise you can’t be all these people; you have to reach out. You also realise there’s loads of people willing to help!”

Face TV receives 180,000 to 200,000 viewers a month and The Cath Vincent Show screens on the 7.30pm monday slot then repeats during the week. Last season saw celebrities such as actor and singer, Shane cortese and adventurer, Kevin Biggar of First Crossings appear on the show.

Although financial risk is something that would cause concern for many TV producers, cath is surprisingly unruffled. “It’s funny when you’re doing what you’re supposed to do you don’t really worry.”

It helps that cath believes wholly in the show’s mission which is to help people “wake up their wow”, learn something and improve their lives.

“I’m inspired to do something that has a lasting impact. I think a lot of people can improve their lives by doing something tiny.”

Anyone dealing with personal property commercially should be aware of the following. Property can be something you can see and touch or it could be something intangible, such as a debt.

If the property is used to support the performance of an obligation it is a security interest. An example of a security interest is where the seller of goods tries to retain the right to the property until such time as the buyer pays for the goods.

As this claim is a security interest if it is not registered in time as a charge under the online personal property register (PPSr), the seller will lose out to a prior interest such as a bank or someone who has their charge registered first.

Luckily, for unpaid sellers, if they structure their terms and conditions correctly, and register on the PPSr in time, they can get a super priority over all other competitors.

That example is clear because the seller’s claim against the property is obviously a security. other

situations give rise to deemed security interests.

As they are not obvious, you can lose out to a competing claim if you don’t register a PPSr charge in time. Examples include goods on consignment, leases for more than one year, assignments of debts and various hire or sales agreements.

on the other hand, some transactions that would be security interests are excluded.

The practical point is that any time personal property is dealt with in a business there is a good chance that it is a security interest. Your interest is at risk if it is not properly protected by a PPSr charge.

Keep interests protected

The first keynote I made from a coffin was in rotorua, in 1991. I was the after-dinner speaker at a national marketing conference. It may still be true today, but then, there was no known record anywhere else in the world of a keynote speaker speaking from a coffin. So, Kiwis, still rule!

The lead-up to the keynote is a story of its own. It included choosing the right coffin, delivery of it in front of hotel staff, my smoke machine nearly triggering smoke alarms in my room (emptying the hotel), my strange costume, throwing my notes about and... fun audience participation.

Why did I choose this format, for a business message to a sophisticated dinner audience? The ‘Wow’ factor? Being ‘first in the world’? confirming my ‘maverick’ status? nothing so clever. The client challenged me to do something ‘better than last year’s speaker’ at the same conference.

He explained that ‘so-and-so’ was their keynote speaker in the previous year. He did, blah, blah, blah, and did I think I could beat that? confidence will take you places. If you want to succeed, always start with ‘yes’. most grown-ups don’t. I smiled and told him, I would do better than that.

Then, I described what I was going to do, and for him to keep it a secret. He went as white as a sheet. quite appropriate, don’tcha think?

He agreed that it was, a ‘brilliant crazy’, with a message. Innovation is exciting. We must always combine ‘memorable’ with ‘meaningful’. YouTube confirms that some of its biggest hits are of ‘chewing-gum for the brain’ clips, aimed at the lowest common denominator. Sad really...
