EASTRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT OF PERFORMING ARTS

DANCE CONCERT 2016

A MAJOR CHANGE IN THE APPEARANCE OR

CHNRACTER OF SOMEONE OR SOMETHING.

HAROLD &DELL AUDITORIUM

Directors' Note

Metamorphosis is defined as "A major change in the appearance or character

of someone or something." As part of the show building process each class

analyzed the work of some of the world's most prolific choreographers. This

analysis became the springboard for each of the dances you will see tonight.

Each class created new works that were inspired by the choreographer they

studied. Towards the back of the program you will find a short synopsis of each

dance detailing the students' interpretations and choreographic processes.

The students worked very hard to put this show together, the dances are

choreographed mainly by the students under the artistic direction of the

instructors. The students are involved in every aspect of the creative process

and built this show over a two month time period. I am thrilled to see all their

hard work come to the stage, many of them performing for the first time in

their lives others leaving our stage for their final bows! I am very proud of what

the students accomplished in such a short amount of time.

While we are thrilled by the audience support of our performers we ask you

observe the following show etiquette:

• No yelling or screaming while dancers are waiting to perform or during the

performance. Clapping at the end of the piece is always appreciated and

appropriate.

* Please remain seated throughout the performances, if you MUST leave please

wait until a dance is finished to exit or enter back into the auditorium.

• Please TURN OFF cell phones for the duration of the show.

• Absolutely NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY during the performances. It is highly distracting to the performers and is dangerous as it creates a blinding

effect while on stage.

• Observing the above show etiquette ensures a pleasurable experience for

both viewers and performers.

Synopsis

"Unarmed Truth"

Alvin Ailey

(Dance II/110

"Unarmed Truth" is based on Alvin Alley's "Revelations (section 1: Pilgrim of Sorrow)"

Ailey choreographed "Revelations" in 1960, it has since become the "signature

piece" for the company. The dance celebrates the human spirit and its ability to

overcome adversity in the face of racism and social injustice. The students analyzed

the work giving particular attention to the beginning formation of "Pilgrim of

Sorrow". The students then incorporated the body shapes into movement motifs

that can been seen throughout the dance. This modern day "Revelations" seeks to

convey powerful feeling of support, dignity and hope.

"I Am Me"

(IB 12 Solo Composition)

I Am Me is reflective of the choreographer's experiences in negative situations

where she was meant to feel like she was not good enough to succeed. This dance

was created as a reminder that as people we are good enough, despite what others

may say or think. Lindsey would like to dedicate this dance to the three people who

gave her constant reminders to pursue her dreams; her brother, mom, and dad.

"Words cannot express my gratitude" - Lindsay.

"Wade In The Water"

Alvin Ailey

(Dance I)

This class drew a strong interest in Alvin Ailey's African American dance style. The

symbolic way of telling a story through movement can be seen in "Wade In the

Water" by incorporating ballet, modern dance, jazz and African dance techniques.

Synopsis

"Burton's World"

Mia Michaels

(Dance I)

Choreographer Mia Michaels defines herself as a "creator, director, choreographer,

storyteller, visionary, innovator, dreamer, designer, and physical expressionist".

From the screen to stage, Mia has transformed dance into inspired and unique works

of passion and beauty. When analyzing the work students made a connection

between Mia's movement style and the character's in Tim Burton's animated films.

The dance is based on an imaginary "Burton World" where someone stumbles upon

the characters from A Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, Frankenweenie,

and Paranorman.

"Those Around Us"

Jose Limon

(Student Piece Through Audition)

Modern Dance pioneer Jose Limon choreographed powerful dances with human

themes. One of his classic pieces "There is a Time" is based on the historic poem

from the Bible, "Ecclesiastes" This poem is based on the cycle of universal human

experiences and is reflective of the passage of time. Tyler's dance is a portrayal of

the modern world we live in and explores the confusion we often feel amidst the

chaos in the world.

"Waiting Room"

Anna Sokolow

(World Dance/Choreography)

Anna Sokolow's interest in humanity led her to create works of dramatic

contemporary imagery showing both the lyric and stark aspects of the human

experience. Students studied Sokolow's "Rooms" choreographed in 1955. "Rooms"

deals with psychic isolation and unfulfilled desires of people living in the city. The

majority of students in this class are graduating from high school this year and they

discussed their hopes and fears as they begin to embark on a new chapter in life.

Discussions also surrounded the feeling of not being a child anymore, but not quite

being an adult. "Waiting Room" is a reflection of the hopes, fears, and uncertainty of

the students in this class. Major themes from Sokolow's "Rooms" such as the use of

chairs and body posturing can also be seen throughout "Waiting Room".

Synopsis

"Villains That Live In My Head"

Isadora Duncan

(Student Piece Through Audition)

This dance is a reflection of modern dance pioneer isadora Duncan. Duncan's

trademark style can be seen through the use of scarfs, sharp movements, turns, and

mirror images. The dance portrays a power struggle.

"For You"

(Travis Wall)

(Student Piece Through Audition)

This dance is based on Haley's grandmother's battle with cancer. Haley uses her

choreography to portray her grandmother's pain and her struggle to look brave and

fearless for her family. Stylistically Haley uses leading head motions which is

reflective of Travis Wall's contemporary dance style.

"Dance, Dance, Otherwise We Are Lost..."

Pina Bausch

(IB Dance 12)

Pina Bausch was quoted as saying, "To understand what I am saying you have to

believe dance is something other than technique. We forget where the movements

come from. They are born from life. When you create new work, the point of

departure must be contemporary life—not existing forms of dance. " Bausch's work

opens possibilities and boundaries between theatre and dance, text and movement,

character and performer. The students in this class worked with abstraction of

gesture and gestural relationships to communicate their portrayal of acceptance and

rejection. Movement motifs from Bausch's Rite of Spring, Café Muller, and

Kontakhof can also be seen throughout the students' work.

"Never Alone"

Kyle Hanagami

(Student Piece Through Audition)

Never Alone shows a person that feels alone but in reality has people by her side and

just doesn't realize it.

Synopsis

"Powerful"

Martha Graham

(Dance I)

This class was intrigued by Marth Graham's eccentric and modern style of

choreography. Her modern and dramatic way of telling a story using movement drew much interest to our students. You will be able to see Marth Graham's influence in

the creation of "Powerful" with a modern day twist.

"Medicine"

Mia Michaels

(Student Piece through Audition)

Mia Michel's choreography is known for touching people's hearts. Her dances are emotionally charged and reflective of the human experience. Emma's dance is about

a person struggling through depression.

"Sculpture"

Pilobolus

(Dance II/III)

Pilobolus is an internationally acclaimed collective, renowned for it unique, diverse collaborations that ignore preconceived barrier between creative disciplines. The

company always works collaboratively, and explores ways of using the human body as an expressive tool. Much like Pilobolus the students in this class worked

collaboratively and created movement through improvisational methods. The movement vocabulary in this dance is largely shape driven as the students sculpt and

mold their bodies to look like statues in a museum.

"Freedom From Oppression"

Lily Cal

(World Dance/Choreography)

Lily Cai is a Chinese-American choreographer who preserves her traditional Chinese culture by performing ancient classical court dances blended with contemporary

dance and theatre. Major themes in Cai's work center on the oppression of woman throughout different dynasties in China. In this dance, students portray the story of

oppression to freedom through the manipulation of parasols, masks, and Chinese

ribbons.

Synopsis

"Pandora's Box"

Martha Graham

(Dance II/IIII)

Graham broke with the traditions of classical ballet and ornamental dance to place

her work at the center of early 20th century modernist aesthetics and social

traditions. Over a period of decades she moved from dances of contemporary social

commentary to works that defined the American past and further back to the primal

stuff of legend and mythology. Graham based her movement system on the

contraction, or folding in of the torso that happens when you sob or laugh. Her

movement vocabulary is angular, bound, and bold. Students drew upon Grahams

use of mythology as a basis for a dance. This dance is a reflection of the myth,

Pandora's Box. The "evil" that is released from the box is represented by the

mythological creatures and elements of Water/Sirens, Fire/Haites, Air/Harpies,

Earth/Famine while Pandora represents hope. Students also strove to incorporate

principles of Graham's movement style into their own choreography.

"Pop Action"

Elizabeth Streb

(IB Dance 11)

Streb was quoted as saying, "When I'm taking my last breath, I want to look at how I

used up the best of myself. How much did I sweat, push, pull, rip, fall, hit, crash,

explode?...My dream is to be so well used that in my last half a second I just burst

into dust." As a choreographer Streb presses the boundaries and perception of what

dance should "look like". Streb refers to the dancers in her company as "Action

Heros" where they learn Streb's technique of "Pop Action". Pop Action is rooted in

the movement principles of changing the bodily base of support, designating specific

locations in vertical and horizontal space, "pop" the muscles to initiate action (rather

than transferring weight in a skeletal way), a timing system that is "felt", and training

for impact. The dancers drew on several of Streb's movement principles such as risk,

force and the use of space and time.
