Nipping Techniques• For the following cuts, begin by placing the material being cut between the blades. Blades should be perpendicular to the surface. Squeeze handles gently to break materials.

• Cutting Squares and Rectangles: To cut a small square into smaller squares, cut the square in half, making two rectangles. Then cut the rectangles in half to make squares.

• Cutting Circles: To make small circles, use a technique called nibbling. Use the tile nipper to take small bites from the edge of glass until a round or desired shape is formed.

• Cutting Triangles: To make small triangles, cut a square diagonally from corner to corner.

• Cutting Random Shapes: To cut random pieces of glass or tile, you can tilt our wrist to the left or right and achieve different curves or points to break.

Grouts, Cements and Colorants

Mosaic Direct and Indirect MethodsThere are two basic methods to mosaic work - the direct method and the indirect method. In the direct method, the pieces of material are directly fixed right side up onto a base and then grouted. In the indirect method, pieces are temporarily fixed right side down onto contact paper which holds the designtogether. This is then placed in a mold and filled with cement. Once the cement is set, the stone is turned out from the mold to reveal the design, right side up cast in the cement.

The advantage of the indirect method is you create a very smooth, flat surface. You can also create and assemble the design in one place ahead of time, then install it in a different location later.
