What is an Easy Reading Brochure?

Square Brackets[ ]

Definition Box

Some-times you will see square brackets, like these [ ], beside a word. The letters between the brackets are there to help people learn how to say the word.

Some words you see will have a box around the word like “Definition Box” to the left. Beside each box, there will be a paragraph that has an line around it, like this one. This is to help people learn what the word means.

Plain language is a way of writing so that more people can under-stand the information. There are some things we do with plain language that you would not see out-side of plain language.

For example, words like understand and outside, used in the first paragraph, have a - in the middle. This helps to make a longer word that is made of more words, easier to read.

We also use things like square brackets and definitions:

Do Not Be a Target“Easy Target”People often bully others who they think are “easy targets.”

Target The person who is bullied.

A person may seem easy to bully if they:

• Are alone a lot

• Seem to have low self-esteem

• Willnotfightback

• Will be easy to push around

Easy target They think that a person will be easy to bully.

Do Not Make Yourself an “Easy Target”There are some things that bullies look for when theypicksome-onetobully.

Here are some things to help you not be a target:

• Donotbringthingstoschoolthatcosta lot of money

• Donotbringthingstoschoolthatmean a lot to you

• Donotgoalonetoplacesyouknow the bully will be

• If you do not like some-one or know they do not like you, stay away from them

Youcan:

• Goplaceswithafriend

• Sitbyanadultthatyoutrustatlunchor on the bus

• Beconfident[con-fi-dent]—youcan practiceconfidentbodylanguageinfront of the mirror

Some-times, even if you try not to be an “easy target,”bulliesmaystillpickonyou.

Be PreparedBepreparedifsome-onepicksonyou.

Donotcallthebullynames.Butyoucanhavesomethingstosaybacktothebully.Thinkaboutthings to say and do.

Herearesomethingsyoucansay:

• Here we go again, tell me when you’re done.

• Okay, done?

• I don’t do this to you, you should really think about what you are doing.

• That is funny, but stop it already.

• I am not sure why you keep saying these things to me, but it doesn’t really matter.

• I’vegivenyoualotofchancestostopthis. If you do it again I will report it.

Theyarecalledcome-backlines.

Remembertostaycalmandconfidentwhenyousay these things.

What Can You Do if You are Being Bullied?Even if you try to stay away from them, some-times bullies will still find you.

Herearesomethingsyoucandoifyouare being bullied:

• Speak up!

• Ask the bully to stop

• Talk to the bully about some-thing that may interest them

• Let them know their words do not hurt you

• Youcandothisifyouuseacome-backlineor try to laugh with them, even if you do not think it is funny

• Standupforyourself,butdonotstartafightor make fun of the bully

• Treat them how you want to be treated

• Try to treat the bully the way you would like to be treated, even if you think they do not deserve it

• Let them know you will not stand for how they treat you

• Use self talk

• Self talk is when you think about things to remind you that you are a great person

• Youcansaythingstoyourselflike:Iwillnotgetupset,Iamstrong,Iamconfident,Iama good person

• Saying things like this to yourself may help you feel better

• Do not get upset

• Show the bully that you are not upset or mad

• Some-timesbulliesbugyoubecausetheywant you to get mad and upset

• Walk away

• Do not pay attention to the bully if they will not leave you alone

• Do not listen to what they say and just walk away

• Get funny

• Do not get mad, get funny

• Itshowsyouarenotscared,evenifyouare

• Youcanpracticefunnythingstosaywithyour friends and family

• Protect yourself

• Itisnotworthgettinghurttoprotectthethings that belong to you

• Be A.W.A.R.E.:

• Avoidsituationswhereyoucouldgetbullied

• Walkandtalkwithconfidenceatalltimes

• Assert yourself and tell others to stop

• Reportbullyingtoschoolstaff

• Enjoyschooleverydaybecauseitis your right

Teach OthersSomepeopleteaseothersbecausetheyaredifferent. If you are teased about being different, learn about what makes you different.

Youcanteachthepeoplewhoteaseyouaboutyourdifference.Iftheyknowmoreaboutyouandwhy you are different, they may not think it is funny to tease you.

Youcouldfindsome-thingtodowhereyourdifferencedoesnotmatter,likeasportsteam oraclub.

Get Help!If some-one says they will hurt you, do not say any-thing to them and walk away.

Get help.

Your safety is the most important thing!

It is okay to report any kind of bullying!

Bullying is wrong.

You should always ask for help.

Keep asking an adult you trust for help until you get it!

Report BullyingHelp stop bullying!

Report it and talk to an adult about it. Theycanhelpyou!

Ifbullyingisabigproblematyourschool, askyourparentstotalktotheprincipalaboutawaytostopbullyingintheschool.

Donotputupwithbullyinginyourschool,groups,orcommunities.Itisnotjustapartoflife.

How Do You Report Bullying?Write down every-thing that happened. Includewhatotherpeopledidtohelpyou.

You should report these things:

• What happened to you

• When it happened

• Who was bullying you

• Who saw it happen

• Where it happened

• How often it happened

How Does What You Do Impact the Problem?It is important to think about how your actionscouldmaketheproblembiggeror help the problem.

Is there any-thing that you do that makes the bullyingworse,orthatcouldstopthebullying?

• If you talk to the person after they have askedyoutoleavethemalone,thiscouldmake the bullying worse

• Ifyouhavenotbeennicetosome-one, theymaybullyyoutogetbackatyou

How to Prevent Social Bullying?

Youdonotnoticesocialbullyingasmuchasotherkinds of bullying.

Thisisbecauseithurtsaperson’sfriendshipswhichishardtoprove.

So,becarefulwhenyoupickyourfriends.

Theyshouldalwaysbenicetoyou.

Youshouldneverbescaredthatifyoudoorsaysome-thing “wrong” they will be mean to you.

Youcantrytostopsocialbullyingifyoutell aparent,ateacher,oranadultyoutrustwhat has happened.

This is when people try to hurt your friend-ships.

How to Prevent Cyber Bullying?

Herearesometipsifyouarebeingcyberbullied:

• Reportcyberbullyingtoanadultyoutrustlikeateacheroryourparents.

• Keepyourpass-wordandcontactinformationprivate.Thisincludesyourphonenumber, e-mail address, and home address.

• Do not say or do any-thing online that you would not say or do in person.

• Make sure you know who some-one is before you add them to your friend list.

• Do not erase mean messages. Keep them so that you have proof when you report cyberbullying.

• Blockthesender’se-mailaddressorphonenumber if they are sending you mean e-mails or text messages.
