Take a load of your mind and geta winter check up with your local mechanic!Many problems occur when the weather gets col-der and with the right advise and proper inspec-tion of your vehicle a lot of aggravation andfrustration can be avoided. A winter check upshould consist of first: a battery test, our batteriesgenerate electric current, when there is a voltagesupply demand a chemical reaction is initiated,current is directly effected by temperature. Sowhen the thermostat drops our batteries are wor-king harder to produce the extra current it usuallydoesn’t have to supply in warmer weather, so if abattery is already weak it may be able to supplyenough current at normal temperatures but willnot when the temperature drops. So always getyour battery tested so your wont be left stranded.Second: Tires, there is a difference between allseason tires and winter tires. There both made ofrubber. But a different compound, most people failto realize that the compound of your all season tireget very hard in freezing temperatures and that it'smore like a hockey puck and not sticking to theroad surface anymore. Winter tires are formulatedto stay soft and sticky in freezing temperatures so

they can continue to grip the road surface. That isalso why its not recommended to keep your win-ter tires on after the temperature warms up be-cause they are made to work best in coldconditions and with warmer weather the com-pound brakes down easier and wears off quicker.So if you do a lot of winter driving, for a saferdrive winter tires are highly recommended. Third: Coolant effectiveness test, before we begin,coolant is poisonous and dangerous to humans andpets and all precautions should be taken and left toprofessionals whenperforming tests.Coolants main jobsare to transfer heatfrom the engine toour radiators so it canbe dispensed and alsoit must not freeze inthe winter or boil inhigh temperatures.And with any liquidthere is a temperaturewere it will freeze,with water its 0’c,with a good strong

coolant it should be between 35-50’c. That meansyour coolant will freeze at -35’c, which hopefullywe will not see, but if your coolant freeze point is-20’c which there is a chance it can get that coldso your coolant could freeze and with it being fro-zen it can’t do its job. But also your coolant couldbe too strong. Coolant always must be diluted (ge-nerally 50/50 with water) for it to be able to movefreely between tight spaces (straight coolant isthinker). And if its not it has to potential to gel.

If someone on your list is wi-shing for a pet this holidayseason, here are some tipsand things to consider tomake sure that everyone —including the new animal —is jolly.

Owning a pet is one of themost rewarding things lifecan offer and it’s the start of afriendship that will last foryears, but pets also comewith serious responsibilitiesand a commitment to theirhealth and happiness. Beforedeciding what kind of animalto buy, first consider the fol-lowing questions:

- Is the giftee ready for theresponsibility of pet owner-ship? If the answer ends upbeing no, are you prepared totake on full responsibilityyourself? If you don’t thinkyour kids are ready, perhapsgive a lower-maintenanceanimal, like a fish, and see ifthey demonstrate the respon-sibility necessary for that des-perately-wanted puppy.

- Has the giftee expressed aclear desire for a new pet?This is one case where a trulysurprising gift might be anunpleasant surprise. If you’renot sure, Woodard suggestsusing creative ways to findout: Walk them by a pet-storewindow; take a stroll aroundthe local park or dog run tosee if any particular petcatches their eye.

If you’ve decided on gettinga new pet for the family,you’ll want to make sure youhave everything you need tomake their new life comfor-table and happy.

- For dogs: Leash, collar,chew toys, treats, brush, foodand water bowls, certificatefor obedience classes andperhaps a chic dog sweater ifit’s cold where you live.– For cats: Litter box, collar,food and water bowls, catnip,cat tree or perch and a cozybed.– Start a file with all the infoyou’ll need to keep for thepet, including a photo, shotrecords and name and loca-tion of your local vet.– Provide the pet with a cratethat they know and trust, so-meplace they can relax and

be comfortable (and in caseof emergency, that you’ll beable to use to easily transportthem).

Home for the holidays

Now for the fun part: brin-ging the pet home and intro-ducing him to the family!Despite the classic imagery,skip the bows and boxes;they can be dangerous. Ins-tead, try to stay calm whenintroducing the new pet, sohe’ll be as relaxed as possi-ble. Consider these tips:

- Make sure small childrenknow what to expect and howto act around their newfriend. Children should al-ways be supervised andtaught to be quiet and gentlearound their pet.– For dogs, start housebrea-king immediately. Youshould be taking a new dogout every 45 minutes so theycan learn where to do theirbusiness.– For cats, show them wherethe litter box is and make sureto give them a lot of down-time to adjust.– Help keep their anxietydown by not giving them runof the full house immediately.Use doors and barriers toslowly introduce them toeach new room.
