“The Page has a special charm in one of the island’s unique resorts”

Simply Gorgeous Dining

Page 15: Eating on Samui - March 2014

15EDITOR’S CHOICE

Combining contemporary elegance with a highly sophisticated concept and exceptional service, The Library’s award-winning restaurant, The Page, is designed to be a refreshingly modern take on Koh Samui’s upscale dining scene. With an open-air deck terrace which runs alongside a vividly red swimming pool and a grandstand view of Chaweng Beach in front, it is easy to get amazed with the wondrous charm the restaurant provides.

As evening falls, one can move to the deck’s romantically lit tables and bask in the soft glow of illuminated trees indigenous to the setting. Furthermore, brilliantly placed orange lanterns and flickering candle lamps add an air of magic to an atmosphere already full of superlatives.

The Page is all about unique experiences, which are found nowhere else on the island. From the delightfully original Breakfast Culture by the beach to an extensive cocktail selection at the beach bar (101 in total + 10 tapas and 10 snacks), The Page is a restaurant destination that stands out in the crowd.

Menu offerings are of Thai and international fusion and are an all-day dining affair. The

Fresh Tuna Salad with Spicy Thai Herbs is an ideal local starter as recommended by the resident chef, followed by a healthy serving of Grilled Lobster with Cashew Nuts and Dried Chili - an ultimately sublime cuisine worthy of a special trip to Chaweng.

The delicious international dishes are equally arresting. Seared King Scallops with Red Pepper Coulis, a popular starter, seems to fit perfectly with the bright and breezy surroundings. The star of the show is the Tenderloin of Wagyu Beef MBS9+. With top marks on the Marbling Score, this is undoubtedly the best beef on the island and is unique in its velvety melt-in-the-mouth texture and juicy tenderness of meat. The Page also features a walk-in wine cellar displaying a wide range of excellent Old and New World choices to complete the evening. Indeed, the whole resort deserves a walk around with its sleek minimalist architecture, beautifully manicured gardens and old trees and tastefully arranged “Reader” sculptures – a signature of the location.

DRINK GALLERYEclectic by nature, artistic by character and thoroughly unique in style, The Library introduces a new restaurant concept, which whips together music, art and design in celebration of good food and the most fantastic drinks.

Sometimes it’s good not to follow the crowd.

Page 17: Eating on Samui - March 2014

17EDITOR’S CHOICE

The Drink Gallery seems to have stepped out of an extremely cosmopolitan city to suddenly grace the beach road in Chaweng. Vibrant and modern, it’s more of a chilled-out venue rather than being a self-conscious one. Step in and be welcomed by staff who are friendly and truly professional; they quickly appear when you need them but don’t hover. The atmosphere is most definitely laid-back. Everything is spotlessly clean and the restaurant has a neat, uncluttered feel to it. The place is designed by The Library, which is situated next door and is known for its minimalism and chic interiors. The Drink Gallery is less minimal, though most visitors will be immediately aware of its spaciousness. It must have one of the highest ceilings of any bar in Thailand – two stories high! A glass wall, meanwhile, separates all the hustle and bustle in the street. Outside there’s an enormous terrace where you can enjoy the night air.

The drinks menu is varied and strikingly original, thanks to Dhasan Prabhananda. He jokingly describes himself as a “mixultant” and says his inspiration comes mainly from the kitchen and from cooking. Many of his drinks are creative and uniquely blended. Try Jarhead – vodka mixed with mint, lime, apples and kiwi served in a mason jar, or Blushed – rum with watermelon, lime, vanilla caster sugar and fragrant Italian basil. Drink Gallery opens for brunch at 11am and operates till 1am. There’s nightly entertainment too with cool DJ spinning on Sundays through Tuesdays and a live acoustic duo on Wednesdays through Saturdays. Food, of course, is dependably good, tasty and portions are ample. Signatures include Samui Rangoon, Roasted Garlic Ravioli and Seared Australian Veal Steak among others

9GEMS Lounge Restaurant

The View from the Top

Easily one of the most sophisticated of Koh Samui’s venues for eating and drinking, 9GEMS Lounge Restaurant appears to be ahead of itself in time. It looks as if it’s stepped right out of an interior design magazine. The chic minimalism of the setting with to-die-for interior design gives 9GEMS both a relaxed and a spacious feel at the same time.

Reservations: 077 256 125

Page 19: Eating on Samui - March 2014

19EDITOR’S CHOICE

Thanks to its location, perched right on top of a hillside, you’ll experience some of the best views on the island. The whole of Chaweng is spread out before you, making this an ideal place to watch the sun go down while you enjoy a long drink or cocktail.

When it comes to dinner, you can expect the dishes to be every bit as sophisticated as the décor itself. Enjoy contemporary takes on Thai and European cuisine. For starters, try fusion chicken tandoori salad, with the dish subtly nuanced by soy sauce and balsamic vinegar. Tagliatelle comes with pesto or tomato sauce but you can also try it with Thai-style massaman curry. The bread, by the way, is home made, as is most of what you’ll find at 9GEMS with very little in the way of any outside processing at all.

When it comes to main courses, enjoy a roasted aurora rack of lamb marinated in pesto and tandoori spices or if you’re a fish lover, try grilled tuna with pepper turmeric on

an asparagus bed with egg risotto. Tastes at the restaurant cross effortlessly between east and west, and have been created by the chef-owner who grew up in Thailand but lived for years in Europe.

With its excellent food, décor and views, recently-opened 9GEMS Lounge Restaurant is definitely worth heading for.

Thai treats in a select settingGolden Elephant

It’s the new kid on the block on Lamai’s beach road: a spacious setting under a giant canvas roof with quality food and drink at prices that won’t break the bank: Golden Elephant focuses on a menu that closely focuses on Thai food and presents it in a tasteful ambience.

You’ll recognize the restaurant thanks to its decorations outside: statues of elephants and monks draw the eye to the interior, which is contemporary Thai but with many

grace notes that hark back to the country’s past. You’ll find an old gramophone, and old-style telephones as well as wooden wall carvings. Old and new sit happily together here, while the décor, never cluttered, lets the sheer spaciousness of the restaurant come to the fore. With tables that are well-separated, dining here means you have plenty of elbow room and can’t be overheard. If you’d like a variation to the comfy wooden tables and chairs there are old-style salas where you can relax and chill out.

There are two tasting menus with excellent value. The first has six different dishes and the other, eight. Golden Elephant also does a Thai-style hot pot moukata or fondue where you place food on a sizzling hot surface punched with holes allowing it to be steam-cooked. Share with family and friends; this is one of Thailand’s most convivial ways of eating. There’s also a children’s menu (western food

only). Popular dishes are displayed on the board outside. You can choose the degree of spiciness that you wish your food to have; just have a word with the waiting staff when they come to take your order.

There are plenty of cocktails, shakes, and long drinks with which to start the evening off, not to mention a goodly selection of wines from both the new and old world. Choose from an array of salads, popular curries, rice, noodles with plenty of seafood and meats. You’ll also find popular sets and naturally, there’s a selection of delicious Thai desserts to finish. Golden Elephant is a good choice whether you come with your family, friends or just to have dinner with your partner.

Page 24: Eating on Samui - March 2014

The approach to The Farmer is down a long drive with a view of green-clad mountains and the surrounding countryside. It’s the only restaurant on Koh Samui that overlooks rice fields, and is a peaceful away-from-it-all setting for a meal whether shared as a couple, family or group of friends.

You can choose to sit in an air-con room, or in a large pavilion with a high roof, or right out in the open enjoying the breeze coming off the fields. Whatever you choose, The Farmer is definitely a stylish place, with contemporary architecture and laid-back ambience. It’s open for both lunch and dinner. Chef Adisorn Kwanthep knows exactly how to please

discerning diners, and guarantee tasty treats that are well-presented. Vegetarian dishes are also avialable at The Farmer.

There are two special sets for lunchtime promotion – Crispy fried duck and ‘Khantoke’ set. Crispy fried duck is a half duck which is beautifully presented on a square, white plate, along with a duo of herbal dipping sauces, rice, and gourd soup. This set also includes fresh tropical fruits and a bottle of water at only 290++ Bt.

Many guests enjoy a ‘khantoke’ for lunch – the Thai word translates as ‘tray’ - which is a selection of delicious Thai dishes usually served

Page 25: Eating on Samui - March 2014

on a tray, but at The Farmer it’s a stylish rattan pannier that’s used. You’ll find two chicken satays, two spring rolls, Tom yam goong, Laab (minced Thai chicken salad with exotic herbs), a curry (either green, red, massaman or paneang) and stir-fry vegetables. Naturally, it comes with rice and at The Farmer they have a unique way of presenting it: five different colors are packaged in banana leaves. Each portion has a slightly different taste, depending on the herbs that have been used. It adds a delicate touch to the dishes you choose. This is a highly recommended set in which you and your partner can enjoy different tasty Thai food in one order at only 990++ Bt.

There are many other sumptuous dishes on the menu. If you like seafood, try grilled fish in banana leaf or whole sea bass with Thai herbs. Meat lovers meanwhile will love the lamb shank, done in a Massaman curry. There are plenty of appetizers, side dishes and salads, too. Highly recommended is the slightly spicy pomelo salad. And don’t forget to leave room for one of The Farmer’s great desserts. No matter what time of day you choose to visit, The Farmer guarantees a great meal in a unique setting.

“Beach Republic has a mellow and ambient feel andhas quickly become an island institution.”

Weekends at Beach Republic have become an island institution. The weekly Soulful Saturdays Pool Party is famous for its buy 2 get 1 free gourmet wood-fired pizzas with local and international DJs providing easy ambient grooves, while party goers lounge under the sun and play in the ocean-front pool.

Also weekly, the Sunday Sessions - Featuring The Ultimate Sunday Brunch ClubTM is hugely popular amongst both residents and tourists alike. Indeed Fah Thai recently rated it Samui’s best Sunday brunch. And at 1,400 Baht including one cocktail, local beer, or glass of wine (700 Baht for kids under 12), it’s great value for money too.

The brunch offers a huge range of options, with different food zones placed carefully around the restaurant. The salad bar boasts everything from Greek numbers with olives and feta cheese

to sun-dried tomatoes and peppers. A barbecue and carving station offers succulent lamb and chicken, while in the kitchen the imported Italian pizza oven helps to create wood-fired pizzas that have to be tasted to be believed. A fine cheese and meat selection platter is another draw as is the mouth-watering dessert station.

Beach Republic is also a fabulous choice during the week – the ocean club is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The wine list is extensive. With everything from New World wines to Italian and French, you are sure to find your perfect choice. If you prefer a longer drink, then the bar can create imaginative cocktail concoctions for you.

No matter when you visit, with its laid back atmosphere, extensive dining options, and stunning ocean-front setting, Beach Republic is sure to impress.

The restaurant presents an excellent variety of Thai dishes from all corners of the island nation. Meat is very well represented by chicken, duck, pork and mixed grill. Conforming to its motto of ‘something for everyone’, SALA THAI also includes a slew of popular Chinese dishes. Its motto holds true for its wine list as well.

SALA THAI impresses diners time and again with dishes that score high on taste, presentation and variety. With two topnotch chefs, one in charge of Thai cuisine and the other handling international dishes, the restaurant manages to maintain its standard without fail during every single visit. The chefs reveal that using fresh ingredients is their secret. Despite having an exhaustive menu, it is an incredible achievement that no two dishes taste the same. Each dish is cooked to perfection, bringing out subtle tastes of its high-quality components.

Being located in Lamai, a beach town in Samui, seafood at SALA THAI is just too good to be true. The Art of fine Dining is more than just exquisite food or a sumptuous Restaurant, it is a way of life. Consultant Chef Aziz has cooking in his blood, cooking pours forth from him as wine from a bottle. Colette, Interior designer decorates with relish and flair, somehow managing to make your feel right at home in the process. BEYOND THE SEASiamese Brasserie

The word ‘Thai cuisine’ is very gruesome. It is definitely a big word. It is a massive variety of dishes representing the achievement from hundreds of year in culture and tradition, a lifetime it would take in order to be a Thai cuisine specialist. How can a single meal be able to show just a slant glimpse of it?

As a visionary and a gastronomist, Khun Omapatt Nuntapanish, our General Manager thought of his trip to Andalucía, Southern Spain and Tapas menu in Seville impressed him greatly as he was able to know Andalucía much better in a single meal.

Adopted and adapted, here comes our Thai Tapas menu, after months of tasting and uncountable sessions of development, now it is ready to be launched. Tantalizing and well-presented our Thai Tapas menu has more than 10 Tapas to offer our guests from Scallop in Green Curry, Thai Paella or Thai Calamari.

After a hot, long and intense meal of Thai cuisine and if a sweet ending is what you are looking for, we highly recommend you bakery from After You, Bangkok’s most famous boulangerie, Almost identical as in Bangkok but slightly better, no long cues plus we serve a special cake designed only for ShaSa and to be served only at BEYOND THE SEA, Siamese Brasserie.

No disrespect to Bangkok but it seems to be impossible for any city views to beat ShaSa’s glorious panoramic sea view. Under Samui blue sky, modern-designed BEYOND THE SEA is located

on Leam Set which is known to be the most peaceful, and the best preserved beach in Samui.

BEYOND THE SEA, Siamese Brasserie opens daily from morning for breakfast continues to ShaSa sunny afternoon and besides sweets from After You, BEYOND THE SEA also pampers its guests by finest coffee, special blends from the selected Starbucks coffee beans. As the night falls, imported wines and champagnes which are well-selected by Khun Omapatt are ready to be served.

ALL ABOUT THE SEAat Le Salon de Ti

Zazen Boutique Resort & Spa

Located in the beautiful surrounding of awarded resort Zazen Boutique Resort & Spa, and offering spectacular views over the bay of Bophut, Le Salon de Ti has become one of Samui’s favourite venues for a true fine dining experience.

Walk up just a few steps to the first floor salon and it feels as if you’re entering a different world: Venetian Chandeliers, Louis XVI style furniture and a majestic fire place blend perfectly with the state-of-art open kitchen. The venue is elegant, sexy and glamorous, yet has an intimate and homely atmosphere.

As the sun sets the culinary temple comes alive, opening its doors to twelve lucky gourmets, who will have the chance to enjoy a seafood inspired menu, under the careful inspection of Zazen’s executive Chef Stephane Courtin. While

being surrounded by the sea, Zazen’s culinary team has the luxury of receiving the freshest fish and seafood on a daily basis directly from their fisherman’s families. What better way to highlight Samui’s island location than enjoying products from the Gulf of Thailand.

Chef Stephane expresses his interpretation of the sea in Le Salon de Ti with his five-course “Delica-seas” menu or one of his “Sea-gnature” dishes, which include an upscale seafood platter or the traditional “Bouillabaisse” fisherman soup.

To complement the cuisine, you can also choose to pair your meal with selected wines from Zazen’s awarded underground wine

cellar and finish in style in Le Rouge Lounge with a fine smoke from the Humidor.

“All about the Sea” at le Salon de Ti is certainly an experience not to be missed. It’s an ideal location for special celebrations, business dinners and private parties or for anyone who whishes to add a refined touch to their tropical vacation.

Considering its fast growing popularity and the limited capacity reservations are highly recommended.

at Le Salon de TiZazen Boutique Resort & Spa

Simply put: you won’t find anything else remotely like it anywhere else on the island. The upper floor of one of Samui’s most sophisticated restaurants has been converted into a beautiful open-air space overlooking the Bay of Bophut. Le Salon de Ti not only serves delicious high teas, but also doubles as a reception area for Zazen’s many weddings and events.

Beautifully decorated with large chandeliers, Louis XVI style furniture, framed old prints and high draperies that perfectly blend with the

Page 37: Eating on Samui - March 2014

contemporary tropical architecture, the salon looks out over lush green gardens to the sea just beyond.

There are only 5 tea bars like this in all the world; step in to an amazingly homely atmosphere and enjoy the selection of Dilmah teas from Sri Lanka – there are 23 to choose from, served in the finest china. The high tea comes with a very generous selection of cakes and pastries, all lovingly prepared for you in the kitchens and bakery.

Specifically designed to be both intimate and homely, Le Salon de Ti is an increasingly popular venue for wedding receptions. Zazen offers four different packages, with both Western and Buddhist ceremonies.

“More than just your cup of tea…”

After the ceremony on the beautiful beach just a few metres away, guests repair to the salon, where the reception is held. It becomes their own private space and their every wish, from the music to the drinks to the food, is catered for.

Whether you come here for a simple tea or a wedding with a hundred guests, you’ll be extraordinarily pampered. Cozy yet sophisticated, you’ll feel more than at home at Le Salon de Ti.

FLAVOURS OF SAMUI

Born in the South of France, Stéphane Courtin grew up appreciating fine food and at an early age began learning how to make French dishes himself. He quickly realized that cooking was a passion for him and has developed his culinary skills while letting his creativity influence him in his choices of what he makes. His experience comes from training under a trio of Michelin-starred chefs, each of whom recognized and nurtured his talents.

Stéphane worked in restaurants in France, first at Le Léonce, then at La Table de St Cressant and finally at La Maison de la Lozère before heading to Asia and Koh Samui.

Stéphane joined Zazen Restaurant as Executive Chef in March 2012 and has designed a new menu which highlights the very best of French cuisine, while keeping to Zazen Restaurant’s own recipe for success: creativity, flair and always making sure that diners leave satisfied.

He’s been described as a modern, creative chef and one of his traits is to use the freshest of produce and ingredients and thereby ensure the taste and flavor of the dishes he makes. For the same reason, he also prefers to use locally-grown products, wherever possible.

He has shown great flair for cooking and seems to have an innate sense of what makes for great dishes. Thousands of hours of hard work have paid off; at the age of 32 he’s considered a remarkably talented chef, able to produce mouth-watering cuisine.

FLAVOURS OF SAMUI

“The thing I most wanted to do was be an architect,” says chef Sathit Muangprom. “I always wanted to create something special, something that would stand out.” He then discovered he also loved cooking. However, he didn’t choose one dream over another. He combined both and the result is 9GEMS Lounge Restaurant. Both the architecture and design of the restaurant are all his creation and are impressive in their own right. And what you eat here is equally as good, making this a dining experience to remember. Sathit has had plenty of cooking experience. He originally learned in Thailand, where he began providing dinners for his brothers and sisters, but then went to Europe. After spending two decades in Switzerland, where he learned European cuisine, plus traveling all over the world, it’s not surprising his tastes are very eclectic.

“My favorite dishes,” he says, “are fusion tandoori chicken salad and Home-made potato gnocchi. I also love Thai-style sea-bass with chili and basil. I make lots of Italian dishes as well as French patisserie. I’m not one for ready-made food from a shop – I prefer to make everything by myself.”

Sathit is a great believer in multi-culturalism and aims for his food to be like the restaurant he’s built and designed – a combination of both Thai and European. With both quality design and food, he’s succeeded in combining very different creative dreams.
